Old Town Film Series rings in the holiday season — with a few twists

A

lthough its November screenings are in full swing, the Old Town Film Series has nailed down its holiday offerings for December, and the selections Mark Burger offer plenty of thrills and spills — and in some cases a decidContributor edly unconventional take on the yuletide season. The films will be screened on consecutive Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the Old Town Neighborhood Center, 4550 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem. As always, admission is free and refreshments will be available for purchase during the screenings.

The December schedule gets off to a riotously spooky start with Joe Dante’s 1984 award-winning smash Gremlins (rated PG) on December 7th. Although the film was released in the summer of 1984, it’s set during the holiday season in the sleepy town of Kingston Falls. Zach Galligan (in his feature debut) plays the all-American boy who comes into possession of the mythical creature known as a Mogwai. But he doesn’t follow the rules about not feeding them after midnight or dousing them in water.

Before long, the entire town is besieged by these mischievous “Gremlins.” The film earned controversy not so much for

its irreverent tone but for its violence, which some considered too strong for a PG rating, hence the introduction of PG13 mere months later.

“Die Hard and Gremlins are always debated every year to see if they really belong in the holiday film category,” said Michael DiVitto Kelly, the recreation center supervisor of the Old Town Neighborhood Center and creator of the film series. “They both occur during the Christmas season, so I say …. Yes! They’re both entertaining with Gremlins being one of my favorite ‘80s films.

I enjoy my scares with humor and Gremlins delivers on both counts — and what kid didn’t want a Mogwai for a pet?

Director Joe Dante has directed some of my other favorites, too: The Howling, Piranha, and Matinee — and long-time character actor Dick Miller always seems to find a way into his films! Look also for [producer] Steven Spielberg’s cameo.”

Kelly is a die-hard movie buff, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the December 14th offering is director John McTiernan’s 1988 action classic Die Hard (rated R), which catapulted Bruce Willis to big-screen super-stardom, spawned four sequels, and became one of the most imitated films of its kind. It also earned Oscar nominations for Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Set on Christmas Eve in Los Angeles, Willis plays New York cop John McClane, whose hoped-for reunion with estranged wife Bonnie Bedelia takes a drastic turn

when terrorists invade the high-rise office building where she works (which is actually the headquarters for Twentieth Century Fox, which released Die Hard).

The film is also noteworthy for introducing acclaimed British stage actor Alan Rickman as the heavy.

“Die Hard was Bruce Willis’s breakout movie for sure, playing the action hero with humor and guts,” said Kelly. “One of the things I [most] enjoy about the film is the presence of Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber. He was absolutely brilliant.”

There will be two screening presentations on December 21st. The first, starting at 2 p.m., is a special children’s program that includes the immortal 1966 animated version of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas narrated

by Boris Karloff, followed by 1966’s A Charlie Brown Christmas, which won the Emmy Award as Outstanding Children’s Program, and capped off by the awardwinning 1992 feature film A Muppet Christmas Carol (rated G), which puts a fresh spin on the Charles Dickens classic and stars two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge. There will also be holiday treats, hot chocolate, and Christmas carols.

Then, at 7 p.m., the series concludes with producer/director/co-writer Michael Dougherty’s award-winning 2015 Christmas scare-fest Krampus (rated PG-13), in which the holiday reunion of a dysfunctional family becomes even more dysfunctional — and deadly — when the malevolent, titular spirit is conjured up.

The ensemble cast includes Toni Collette, Adam Scott, David Koechner, Emjay Anthony, and Conchata Ferrell.

“Krampus is my new favorite holiday film,” Kelly said. “It made me shiver with its creepy cold atmosphere, a perfect blend of humor and horror. Filmed in New Zealand, the beginning sequence alone is worth the price of admission. I savored every minute — and any holiday film that references A Charlie Brown Christmas is gold. It’s a mainstay at my house every holiday season.”

Kelly will introduce each film and there will be an informal discussion after each screening.

Having introduced the Old Town Film Series in February, Kelly is also working on a new yuletide program by assembling a holiday tree display event at the Old Town Neighborhood Center. “I’m hoping to get some uniquely creative holiday trees,” he said. “I was inspired by a nature center I used to visit when I lived in New Jersey, where people came up with lots of fun Themes. It doesn’t have to be a ‘traditional’ style of tree, and I’m going to do outreach to local businesses as well.” !

atrick Henry hated two things: tyranny and James Madison.

That’s why in 1788, Henry persuaded the Virginia General Assembly to re-draw Jim Longworth the 5th Congressional District to favor his friend James Longworth Monroe. The ploy at Large didn’t work because of Madison’s popularity across party lines, but it does mark the first documented case of gerrymandering in America.

Since then, the practice of fiddling with boundaries has become commonplace, especially here in North Carolina.

To be fair, both major political parties have engaged in gerrymandering, a strategy designed to protect incumbents of whichever party was in power at the time. It is also sometimes employed to strengthen that party’s hold on the state legislature or increase their numbers within the congressional delegation. Lately, though, the GOP’s map-drawing activities have been particularly heavy-handed and ballsy, considering that Democrats outnumber Republicans on the voter rolls.

In recent times such gerrymandering has been designed to dilute Democrat and minority voting and make it unlikely for Black candidates to win a seat in Congress. To that point, earlier in this decade, Republicans once held 10 of North Carolina’s 13 congressional seats.

But the census and the courts changed that equation when our state picked up an additional congressional district, and a panel of special masters came up with a map that resulted in each party holding seven seats.

Earlier last month, the Republican-controlled N.C. Senate re-drew district lines that can be used for the 2024 election, and with a conservative Supreme Court in the mix, the GOP stands to unfairly gain seats in both Raleigh and Washington.

But if that kind of political skullduggery leaves a bad taste in your mouth, just wait until it actually affects the taste of your

drinking water, and it could.

According to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, we need to spend between $17 billion and $26 billion dollars to ensure that our water and wastewater infrastructure systems don’t pose a hazard to our health. Speaking with the Winston-Salem Journal’s John Deem, NCDEQ Secretary Elizabeth Biser said, “Our communities are dealing with an aging infrastructure. A lot of pipes that were put in the ground before any of us were born, are made out of terracotta and wood, and they’re leaking and losing water and wastewater throughout our state.”

As Deem reports, last month Republican lawmakers approved $2 billion dollars for replacing and improving more than 200 local water and sewer projects.

But Democrats like Guilford representative Pricey Harrison point out that those budget allocations were not formulated based on the highest need, but rather on which localities are controlled by Republicans. To be specific, the North Carolina Conservation Network estimates that 83% of the funding will be spent in counties and cities that are, “represented exclusively by Republicans in the General Assembly,” and only 2.5% will go to areas, ”represented entirely by Democrats.”

That, my friends, is gerrymandering at its worst.

Sam Chan, a spokesperson for Gov. Roy Cooper told the Journal, “It’s wrong to divide up money in the back room based on politics…the need is great for clean water infrastructure that’s critical for our health and our economy, and it cheats taxpayers not to get the best use of every dollar.”

Patrick Henry once said, “Give me liberty or give me death!” He also opposed, “taxation without representation.” But thanks to his pioneering efforts in the art of gerrymandering, we are slowly losing our liberty by having our tax dollars spent without fair and balanced representation, and that’s hard to swallow, with or without water. !

An airport to remember: Star duo shines in What Happens Later

A

fter nearly a decade away from the big screen, Meg Ryan returns to familiar territory with What Happens Later, a romantic Mark Burger comedy that she also directed, served Contributor as executive producer, and collaborated on the screenplay with co-executive producers Steven Dietz and Kirk Lynn, based on Dietz’s 2008 play Shooting Stars.

For much of the 1990s, Ryan was the quintessential “rom-com” lead despite periodic forays into more dramatic fare, and she brings her expertise to bear here.

The film is dedicated to Nora Ephron, with whom Ryan worked with in When Harry Met Sally … (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You’ve Got Mail (1998), and there is something of an “Ephronesque” vibe here, to say nothing of Neil Simon.

The main characters, Ryan’s Wilhemina “Willa” Davis and David Duchovny’s William “Bill” Davis, don’t so much meet cute as “re-meet” cute in a bustling airport. Some 25 years ago, the two were

lovers, and it’s clear from the outset that both are still toting around emotional baggage (no pun intended). With a fierce winter storm on the horizon, both of their respective flights are canceled, which gives them plenty of time to revisit their relationship and, perhaps, to rekindle it.

When they’re not bantering, bickering, or reminiscing, the two exchange glances, sometimes with longing and sometimes with exasperation, as they come to terms with the directions their lives have taken since their breakup. Ryan and Duchovny (also an executive producer) have charm and chemistry to spare, which goes a very long way during the occasional lulls in pacing. It’s particularly nice to see a romantic comedy where the principals are middle-aged, and the film’s most potent attribute is how easily and comfortably they work together. It never feels forced.

The romantic comedy is a genre built on contrivance, and What Happens Later embraces that while also sending it up. Both characters are named “W. Davis.” He’s on his way to Austin, where she happens to live. She’s on her way to Boston, not far from where he lives, and now the twain have met — again. There’s some snappy repartee, including a particularly funny discussion about ‘90s music, and some bittersweet moments that the actors carry off deftly.

role credited to one “Hal Liggett.” The actual identity of this voiceover actor has not yet been divulged, but it is a familiar voice. In one interview Ryan stated that she came up with the pseudonym as an homage to HAL-9000, the omniscient computer of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and indeed the announcer appears to have a keen insight into their relationship. It’s an amusing touch, as are the visual nods to the genre by Ryan and cinematographer Bartosz Nalazek.

What Happens Later doesn’t break any new ground, and the outcome is hardly surprising, but it’s a pleasing diversion and qualifies as an ideal date movie.

Corny? Yes. Unabashedly romantic? Yes. But it’s got heart and proves there’s still life in a well-worn genre. !

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman accompanied the mayor on Nov. 6 at a news conference where they presented a resolution to help curb reckless driving in the city, The Washington Post reported, saying the city needs to “change the daily behavior” of dangerous drivers. But after the event, as soon as Norman hit the road in his SUV, a dump truck rearended him, injuring both Norman and another officer. “We did not need this type of reminder that all drivers need to slow down and increase caution on our roadways,” Mayor Cavalier Johnson said.

The BBC reported on Nov. 8 that a man in South Korea lost his life after a robot he was working on in a factory grabbed him and crushed his face and chest onto a conveyor belt. The employee of the robotics company, in his 40s, was working late on the robotic arm when it mistook him for a box of vegetables, which it was supposed to lift and transfer onto a pallet. The man was taken to the hospital but later died of his injuries.

MEANWHILE, AT THE MALL ...

A man who had been living in a Shanghai shopping center stairwell for about six months was finally evicted on Oct. 30, the Daily Star reported. One security guard discovered his cozy setup, which included a tent, an ergonomic chair, a desk and a computer, but allowed him to stay while he studied for exams — until a second guard found the makeshift home. The unnamed man used the mall’s electrical outlets to charge his devices.

RECENT ALARMING HEADLINES

— On Nov. 7, David Lassiter, 74, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, left his wallet behind when he voted, PennLive.com reported.

Lassiter returned to the polling place and found his wallet, but $100 was missing.

Police said he “made a scene inside ... (and) made threats to come back with a firearm.” At home, he called police to report the alleged theft, but then said he would get a gun and handle it on his own. Officers arrived at the polling station before Lassiter arrived; in his car, they found seven firearms with ammunition. “Mr. Lassiter became aggressive and hostile toward the officers on scene,” police said. “He was detained for his safety as well as that of everyone on the scene.”

— Well, this escalated quickly. A man in Malaga, Spain, called a plumber on Nov. 4 to fix a broken pipe in his home, Oddity Central reported. After assessing the project, the plumber gave the homeowner an estimate, which sent the homeowner into a rage. He produced a firearm and threatened to kill the plumber; neighbors heard the disturbance and called police, but when they arrived, the homeowner would not release his hostage. Police got a glimpse of him and the plumber/hostage through a window and began negotiations; they asked the man to slightly open the front door so they could see that the plumber was all right. That’s when special forces stormed in and rescued the hostage.

The homeowner is in police custody.

Washington native Ben Miller is a painter of landscapes, focusing on river scenes to raise awareness about conservation. Oddity Central reported that it’s his painting method that makes him stand alone: He applies paint to fishing flies that he makes himself, then flings them at a piece of plexiglass positioned several feet away.

Having learned fly fishing from his dad, Miller hits the precise mark he’s aiming for every time. He said he sometimes gets approached by police because people assume he’s fishing out of season, but they’ve always been understanding.

On Nov. 1, at Canberra Airport in Australia, a woman who seemingly missed her flight ran past security and onto the tarmac, trying to attract the attention of the pilot, 9News reported. The QantasLink flight was headed to Adelaide. Witness Dennis Bilic said it was “weird” that no one stopped her: “People were a bit flat-footed ... that was the weird part.” Another witness said the pilot was “warned or spotted her and killed the engine.” Flights were delayed for about 10 minutes after the incident.

Fashion icon Dior has launched a new scent made for babies, the Mirror reported.

Bonne Etoile, priced at 230 British pounds (about $281), will provide a “gentle reminder of sweet memories of early childhood,” the brand gushed, with its “light notes of fruit, pillowy cotton and velvety petals.” (Do I detect a hint of spit-up?) It contains 98% natural-original ingredients.

Workers at Arlington Auto Wrecking in Akron, Ohio, had had enough of 26-year-old Alexander Funk, who had broken into the facility three times, Fox News reported on Nov. 5. In the most recent incident in October, Funk broke into an SUV on the lot, but before he could drive away, a forklift driver hoisted the car about 20 feet off the ground with Funk inside. When they explained the situation to the 911 operator, they said, “Wonderful, that is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard.” Officers arrived and Funk was lowered to the ground and handcuffed. APPETIZERS OF HOLIDAY GOODNESS

For the first course, the folks behind FemFest are getting the jump with a Pop Music Trivia takeover, on November 16, at Acadia Foods; grand-prize winners get tix for the FemFest festival proper, going down at the Ramkat on December 2.

Proceeds from both events go to Family Services of Forsyth County.

Greesborians looking to get a jumpstart on charitable drives — or crank start as the case may be — can bike on over to Revolution Cycles on November 18 for “Cranksgiving,” “the part bike ride,

part food drive, part scavenger hunt, and all around party.”

“Participants will ‘race’ to local stores and purchase items needed by Greensboro Urban Ministry. Upon returning with these items to the bike shop, we’ll Friendsgiving it up!,” said organizers at Revolution. “This ride is open to all levels, even if your bike is sitting in the garage gathering dust and rust. Bust it out. Think of this as a great way to figure out how to ride to your local grocery store and as an opportunity to make friends out of strangers.”

The opportunity extends equally to full families, pedestrians (and even the more sedentary among us). Revolution boasts a handful of grocers within walking distance and is looking to share a post-ride potluck bounty. “Just bring some canned goods to donate and join in the feast!,” they said, “...along with your best Thanksgiving side dish to share. Or your worst. Or the one you want to make this year, but you’re worried will poison everyone. We’ll be your guinea pigs.”

Over in High Point, Brown Truck Brewing Co. goes more to the dogs on

November 18 for “Tails of Thanks,” an adoption fair and fundraiser party to benefit The Haley Graves Foundation, a Summerfield-based animal rescue organization. The YMCA of High Point is collecting toys for its annual toy drive, now through November 23. As a lead-up to the seventh-annual “5 Before the Feast” 5K, organizers are accepting new, unwrapped toys for ages 1-13 on race day; or in advance at the Junior League of High Point’s Briles House, Hartley Drive YMCA, and the High Point Rocker’s Truist Point stadium.

MUSICAL CHARITIES AS THE MAIN COURSE

For folks looking to feast on tunes and share goodwill, the Flat Iron is now an official drop-off location for the Working Class & Houseless Organizing Alliance (WHOA)’s winter drive, with bartenders on hand during any open-hour to accept: sleeping bags, hand warmers, socks, thermal blankets, and general items to help Greensboro’s houseless community stay warm this winter. And getting in the spirit, the Flat Iron will host Bob Margolin (with special guest Justin Fedor) for a

concert benefiting the Greensboro Urban Ministry on November 21.

In Winston-Salem, a “Battle of the Video Bands” benefit for H.O.P.E. of Winston-Salem is coming to the Hanes Mall Dave & Buster’s in Hanes Mall on November 22. Attendees will enjoy a concert of music videos and vote for their favorites, choosing from among more than a dozen Triad artists, including: Carolina Ambush, Brice Street Band, I-42 Band, GypsySoul, Uncle Watson’s Widow, The Distractors, James Vincent Carroll Music, Zack Harding, Carolina Rust, Tiffany Jones, Jimmy Mowery, and The Consequences of Our Own Actions.

Dedicated to fighting food insecurity, especially among children, H.O.P.E. of Winston-Salem is also collecting new, unwrapped, toys at various locations around the Triad through December 1.

A DESSERT OF FRIENDS AND TRADITION

With goodwill going around, Thanksgiving is a time folks gather — friends and families come to town. Memories are made and shared — of loved ones across the table, across the world, or kept alive in our hearts.

With that, the fifth annual “Cransgiving” goes down at Wahoo’s in Greensboro on November 22. A family band of friends celebration, centered around Casey Cranford and Ranford Almond.

For 2023, Ben Vinograd (Big Something) and Bill Stevens (Isaac Hadden Organ Trio) join the jammy bunch to bring pure vibes, warm hearts, and a salute to those no longer with us. “Be grateful my friends,” organizers said in a toast to the event. “And may your Fountain runneth over as we move into the holidays.”

Moving into those holidays, “Black Friday” bands are playing on the day of shopper’s delight and the weekend for traditions old and new.

Old traditions continue with a new flavor for Possum Jenkins, who’ll host their annual celebration as an afternoon show and beer-release party at Wiseman Brewing. Bestowed with the honor of being namesakes for Wiseman’s

new beer: Possum Drinkins. “It’s light German-style lager that’s sure to get you in the Thanksgiving spirit,” said the band inviting folks to the party. “Y’all come, and bring your cousin,” they added. ”Your favorite bunch of Possums will be picking live and tipping back a few pints.”

A few blocks over, WrestleCade Weekend wollaps the Benton Convention Center with a post-Thanksgiving tradition entering its 11th round with three days of matches, meetups, panels, and even a special stand-alone concert with Jeff Hardy on November 25. The festival kicks off at noon on November 24, with a “behind the music” discussion with the “Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart exploring his career — from 1960s Memphis rock n roll with The Gentrys to composing some of the most wellknown wrestler themes.

As folks gather and feast, so do they gather and grieve. With that, friends and bands will host “A. Pennington: A Requiem in 3 Acts,” a memorial metal show for Anthony Pennington at Gas Hill Drinking Room on November 25 with NiCeae, Azazel, and End Of Your Rope.

Mayor calls out property owners over shooting incidents At the November 6 meeting of Greensboro City Council, Mayor Nancy Vaughan spoke angrily about the shooting that occurred outside of Electric Tequila Bar and Grill at 1720 Ian McDowell Battleground Avenue on the early morning of November 4.

Contributor Vaughan had been doing a ride-along with Greensboro police when the call came in from dispatch, and she accompanied officers to the scene.

Describing the incident, Vaughan criticized both the business owner and landlord.

“There was an awful situation at a bar, and I’m going to call them out. They have a long history of bad behavior and there was a shootout with probably close to 200 shell casings. I believe that the landlord finally canceled the lease with Electric Tequila, but I believe that he did it for one reason and one reason only, and that was because he knew that we had all the reasons we needed to declare them a nuisance. When we declare a nuisance, it means that building can never have an ABC permit in it again, not for that business owner or any other. If it’s true that he pulled the lease, I am grateful for it, but I think it was done strictly for financial reasons.”

Vaughan told YES! Weekly that her allegations about the landlord were directed at William Kotis Jr., aka Bill Kotis, whose company Kotis Properties Inc. owns the property, and not his son, Marty Kotis, CEO of Kick Ass Concepts and a trustee of UNC-Chapel Hill. On social media, it has been repeatedly but incorrectly claimed that Marty Kotis was the landlord of Electric Tequila.

On Monday, Kotis Properties attorney Charles Winfree acknowledged that Electric Tequila’s lease was terminated.

“We are not in the habit of discussing our business relationships with our tenants with either the mayor or the media.

However, we can confirm that we terminated Electric Tequila’s possession of the premises following uncured defaults by the tenant.”

“Just as we would not speculate that the mayor’s scapegoating of Kotis Properties is driven by political concerns, we would hope that she would refrain from rhetorical excesses that impugn Kotis Properties. Unlike the city, which has police powers, a landlord in a lease is constrained by the terms of that lease, of which the city and the mayor have very limited information.”

Vaughan began her comments to council by speaking about the reason for her GPD ride-along, which was to observe celebrations of the N.C. A&T homecoming.

“There were some things that happened in the city that had absolutely nothing to do with homecoming or A&T. It was not their students; it was not their alumni. There were some unsanctioned events where bad behavior happened, and I believe there were people who came in from out of town who just wanted to take part in what they felt was the A&T mystique.”

Vaughan said the incident at Electric Tequila was such an unsanctioned event.

Security video from a neighboring establishment shows muzzle flashes from what appear to be two or more shooters, who can be heard firing about 50 rounds before fleeing. Two women received gunshot wounds to their legs. GPD has not confirmed Vaughan’s claim of “close to 200” shell casings recovered from the scene.

Vaughan said she was frustrated that, despite the incident early that Saturday morning, the city had been unable to prevent Electric Tequila from reopening on Sunday afternoon.

“They had another unsanctioned A&T event and they had over the capacity that they should have.”

For being over-capacity, Electric Tequila was fined $32,250. Later that Sunday,

business owner Bobby Lee Mullins was arrested by ALE agents and charged with the following misdemeanors: allowing affray to occur on the licensed premises; allowing controlled substance violations to occur on licensed premises; and failing to superintend a licensed premises. His first court appearance is set for December 5.

Vaughan also said that Electric Tequila was not the only bar or club “we’re having trouble with.”

“There are probably five others right now that are just as bad. I’ve had a lot of people say to me, why can’t you shut them down? People need to understand that we as a city council, me as the mayor, don’t have the ability to do that. They have rights and it takes us a long time to build a case. I think we have to go back to the legislature and demand that they make it easier to shut places like this down. Do we really have to wait for somebody to get shot or killed? This is one of a number of dangerous locations that we have throughout our city. I will say that the property owner owns another bar in town that has had shootings at it.”

Vaughan told YES! Weekly she was speaking of Ghost Bar Kitchen and Cocktails at 4512 West Market Street, a building also owned by Kotis Properties.

On June 14, WFMY reported two shootings at or near that establishment, and one victim, a woman, died from her injuries.

As for the prior history of incidents at or near Electric Tequila, Metro 911 records list 89 “events” at 1720 Battleground Avenue between January 2022 and November 2023, with Electric Tequila named in 58 of them. Before March 2023, most dispatches were in response to burglar alarms or traffic accidents, along with four incidents of “noise disturbance or party” and one of “disorderly subject or crowd.”

“I hope that we can work together as a council and go to our legislature,” said Vaughan. “We’ve been told an entertainment ordinance would make it hard to do business. Well, maybe for some businesses, it should be hard to do business, because they’re not doing it right; they’re jeopardizing their patrons and are very bad neighbors.”

Vaughan also criticized Guilford County judiciary.

“We need to make sure that when the police arrest somebody and bring them down to the jail, that they are going to have to stay there. I don’t know how many times I’ve been told that somebody has been brought to the jail, but are out before the officer’s shift is even over. I believe in bail reform for minor items like traffic infractions and bad checks, but not when you have a violent thing that happens and guns are involved. We need to make sure our community understands that it’s not just policing that’s the problem, it’s the criminal justice system, and judges need to be accountable and to hold people accountable.” !

fficers, residents, and family members impacted by violence in Greensboro held their candles and each other tight as they called for a stop to Chanel Davis the killings that have ravaged the city.

“Are you tired yet?

Editor This vigil should be packed. It should be standing room only out here,” said Irish Spencer, founder of Families Against Senseless Killings.

The community candlelight vigil was held on Wednesday, November 8 at the Governmental Plaza in downtown Greensboro by Mothers Standing Against Gun Violence, Families Against Senseless Killings, Greensboro Police Department and city leaders, and the Office of Community Safety. go with each person’s poster that was placed on the lawn, following a moment of silence.

“The reason why we are here tonight is because we have reached a milestone, to me, that is unacceptable. We are now at 65 homicides for the year and we still have two months left,” said Mary Nero, Greensboro’s homicide victim advocate.

“What I want tonight to be about is comfort, support, and solidarity. Those who have lost loved ones, I want you to be comforted by the fact that people out here care. For those of you who have lost loved ones, I want you to be supported because people out here care. This solidarity I want to be a symbol to our community that we care and stand together. This violence and these numbers are unacceptable and appalling.”

As of Monday, November 13, Greensboro Police reported a total of 65 homicides for 2023 compared to 39 in 2022. So far, 37 of those homicides are still unsolved.

The Winston-Salem Police Department has had 42 homicides to date, compared to last year’s 31. As of Monday, 13 of the homicides in 2023 are classified as unsolved.

Nero also addressed the officers that were present at the vigil.

“To my law enforcement brethren, I am acutely aware of the insanity that you endure. The crazy hours you work. My detectives, my officers, my crime scene investigators, all of you. The sacrifice that you guys make, sometimes at a personal level, all to quell the violence that is rippling through our community. I thank you,” Nero said. “You are also supported and appreciated.”

Last week, Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson said in a Facebook video that the department is “outraged, disheartened, and exhausted by the violence our

community has experienced this year.”

Qumara Lee spoke about the need to recognize and end violence in the community. She is the mother of Quenton Harrington, who died from gun violence in 2019.

“We no longer can turn a deaf ear or a blind eye to the escalating crisis in our neighborhood. Greensboro mourns the loss of 65 souls this year alone,” Lee said. “These young lives, look upon us for guidance. By acknowledging the issues and addressing them, we can influence them, and shape them for the better. It’s not a time to cease ignoring their activities or their decisions. Even when we feel unheard, we must persist. For the sake of their futures and the future of our communities.”

Lee said, “Everybody should be working hard to make a change in these little ones’ lives.”

“Right now, we’re burying them every day instead of helping them.”

Nero told the crowd that she believes “the only way that you stop evil is with acts of kindness and goodness.”

“I want everybody to look around and know that this event represents kindness and goodness, and that is what sanctifies evil,” she said.

Spencer said that community members need to be more invested in what’s going on in their communities and that those willing to de-escalate issues before they get out of hand are needed.

“Our police are in reactive mode. They can’t be proactive. They can’t do anything right now. It’s too much work,” she said.

“So we’ve got to have people out here for folks to talk with to calm them down.”

Thompson said in his video that the community must come together to put an end to the violence.

“Greensboro has achieved a regretful

milestone of 65 homicides to date. It is one thing to hear the figure 65 and realize it is a large record-breaking number. It is another thing, and more important thing to consider what each life means to all of those that are directly affected,” Thompson said. “We are asking the community to stand with us and condemn the violence we are seeing. We are exhausted. The families are exhausted. Our dedicated officers and staff will fervently continue our piece. But it is the whole community that must come together to understand why these individuals are choosing violence and what we can do as a community to address the deeper systemic issues.” !

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BARTENDING? I started bartending the day after I turned 21 — a mistake I don’t recommend any first time bartenders make.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A BARTENDER? When I was 20, I was hired at the GrandLuxe Theatre as a server with the express goal of being a bartender.

I learned all I could beforehand, and the day after I turned 21 I got behind the bar.

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND AS AN AFTER-DINNER DRINK? If I’m staying out I love sipping a nice Añejo.

If I’m winding down for the night, I’ll enjoy a Carolinabis Wild Waters.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT BARTENDING? I love the science of flavor and creating sensory experiences. I’ve always loved cooking and experimenting with the flavor, texture, and the aesthetics of food. Lucky for me, bartending scratches that same itch and I get to actually see the experience I give the people who enjoy my work.

WHAT’S THE STRANGEST DRINK REQUEST YOU’VE HAD? I had someone order a double Aperol neat.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BARTENDING? Standing.

WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST THING YOU’VE FOUND IN A BAR BATHROOM? I found a purse in the bathroom with two of our plates, three of our glasses, multiple rolls of silverware, and absolutely no way to find the owner of said purse. Sadly, we never found out who it belonged to.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DRINK TO MAKE? I love making sours. Coming from a cooking background, I reverse-dry shake to get the best foam out of my egg whites.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DRINK TO DRINK? I always start by trying to find what drink the bartender is proud of. I think when someone is proud of their work, you can taste it. If that isn’t an option, I love a Naked & Famous.

WHAT’S THE WILDEST THING YOU’VE SEEN WHILE BARTENDING? Seeing multiple people propose in a packed theater opening night of a Tyler Perry movie.

WHAT’S THE BEST/BIGGEST TIP YOU’VE EVER GOTTEN? I got tipped $200 on a $300 tab that already had an 18% gratuity on it.
