The Six Steps To Success... COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION: Grab an application form from our website, your careers teacher, your careers office, Yeovil College Reception or from the back of this prospectus. Simply complete it and send it back to us. The quickest and easiest way is to do it online and you’ll be kept up-todate with progress. If you need a little help completing the form, give our super friendly Student and Customer Service team a call, or if you’re not 100% sure yet, add in all the study programmes you’re thinking about so we can have a chat about it. YOUR INTERVIEW: Once we have received your application form, you’ll be invited to interview. But don’t panic! This really is an informal process; we want to meet you and have a chat about your strengths and career ambitions. It’s important to us that we give you an offer of a place at Yeovil College for the right course at the right level. Our interviews usually take place between 5pm and 7.30pm or during the school holidays so there’ll be no interruption to your day. Your parents/guardian or a friend are very welcome to attend with you for a little extra moral support. YOUR OFFER: Not long after your interview, you will hear from us with an offer of a place at Yeovil College. This might be an unconditional offer or a conditional offer depending upon the achievement of certain exam results. You must secure your offer by letting us know as soon as possible that you would like to accept the place. Do it via email, in writing or by calling us.

NEW STUDENTS’ DAY: This is a hugely exciting day for you. This is the first time that you will meet your new classmates, meet the rest of your tutors and see where you’re going to be studying. It takes place in the summer and there’s lots of fun activities planned for you to enjoy.

IT’S TIME TO ENROL: In August, you’ll be asked to pop into College to officially enrol. We’re delighted when learners get the grades they were hoping for, but don’t panic if you didn’t do as well as you’d hoped. We can adjust your study programme offer to what you need following your exam results.

YOUR FIRST WEEK: Jump out of bed, hurry into College and let the adventure begin! This week you’ll take part in Freshers Fair, receive your official student ID, grab your NUS card and receive your log-ins. You’ll officially become a Yeovil College learner and we can’t wait to help you get your future started. Be Inspired at Yeovil College.

Employers: We value our links with our employer networks, in fact they are critical in supporting us with the design and development of our curriculum. Not only do our employers advise us about course content but they ensure that we are delivering up-to-date, industry-standard training which meets the needs of their sector. Our employer ambassador programme, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, allows employers to become involved with their next generation of employees through mentoring, guest lectures, master-classes, work experience and mock interviews. In fact, our official employer satisfaction score is one of the highest in the UK.

Work Experience/Placement: The Government has very recently announced plans to reform technical education in England which includes their intention to support young people and adults into sustainable, skilled employment by offering high quality and valued work placements. Praised for our exceptional employability skills development and strong links with local, regional and national employers, we have been selected as one of the only Colleges in the country to trial this brand new Work Placement Pilot. Not only will work placements help ensure that learners are ‘work ready’ but it will help to give them the experience they require to fast-track into the career they’ve always wanted. The benefits for our learners are huge, and include improved career opportunities, enhanced CVs, employability skills, an employer reference and an enriched UCAS application.

University Partners: Our Yeovil College University Centre works in partnership with national universities, Pearson Edexcel and many professional bodies to bring a range of excellent, industry-recognised qualifications. We work collaboratively as a community to the benefit of our students, ensuring access to a wide range of high-quality degree level and professional courses, excellent teaching and support services.

Outstanding School Partnerships: We have fantastic links with all schools in our local area, which allows us to support a smooth and easy transition from school through to College and helps us develop an appropriate support plan right from day one. We also work closely with our schools to introduce learners to College early on in their school life, ensuring that they feel comfortable and familiar with the College environment. You may have had your first visit to College as early as Year 8!

Leadership and Management: Outstanding leadership and management is the difference between success and failure. Strong leaders have the selfdiscipline to manage themselves, the self-confidence to motivate teams and the self-awareness to realise their true leadership potential. Through a mechanism of workshops and formal professional development, leaders are able to develop their thinking and the part they play in developing the best environment for themselves and their employees.

What are the entry requirements? To become an Apprentice, you must be in paid employment. Some Apprenticeships have a minimum entry requirement but entry is not based on academic achievement alone – practical skills, interest in the subject, your potential and your commitment are really important to us and enthusiasm is critical! As a helpful guide, for a Level 2 Apprenticeship you will need to work at GCSE grade 3 (D) or above and for Level 3 you will need to work at GCSE grade 4 (C) or above. If you’re not in employment already, don’t worry as we can also help you find a suitable employer; don’t let this be a barrier for you enquiring about an Apprenticeship. What are the next steps? Career opportunities are huge! The majority of our Apprentices are retained or receive a promotion from their current employers and many go on to secure even better jobs. Some Apprentices continue their learning, and with their employer’s support, they choose to continue their training and education with a higher-level Apprenticeship or Degree Apprenticeship.

Celebrating a milestone Yeovil College has been offering students the chance to a further education for over a century and this academic year we will be celebrating our 130th birthday.

The College was first formed in 1887 when Somerset County Council began formally organising Science and Art classes in Yeovil. Yeovil Technical College was formed in 1947, and later in 1974 a reogranisation of secondary education resulted in Yeovil College being established as the third tertiary College in the UK. Our students have won many sporting and academic awards over the years with success ranging from the chemistry department winning “BBC Young Scientist of the year”, Somerset’s Apprentice of the year,

regional and National selections in sports like Hockey, Rugby, Football and Golf. Today, Yeovil College remains passionate about its role as a key provider of education and training in South Somerset and Dorset. It remains committed to its role as a tertiary College for the whole community and currently supports around 5000 learners. Following our recent achievement in becoming Western Gazette Business of the Year Award and the Somerset Business Awards, we know we’re doing the very best for our learners!
