Making the Cut is hosted by Heidi Klum And Tim Gunn, where 12 designers face challenges to test their design skills, and we had the honor of watching Jeanette on the show and decided to reach out to her for an interview.
We interviewed Jeanette to discover her incredible passion for draping, but one of the most moving aspects of the story was her memories of Christmas as a girl growing up We found that her extraordinary warmth and modesty were not only for television; she is amazingly humble in real life.
Jeanette Limas was born in The Dominican Republic and began her education there at The Mercy Jacquez Institute, studying pattern making. Later, she enrolled in the prestigious School for the Arts, Altos de Chavón. Jeanette received the Young Designer of the Year Award upon graduation, allowing her to present her debut collection during the Dominican Republic Fashion Week. She also won a scholarship to study at Parsons School of Design and relocated to New York City to pursue higher education.
She studied drapery at The Fashion Institute of Technology to develop her already-commanding technique Jeanette is currently a full-time designer and has worked on the design team of Urban Zen by Donna Karan and Jolibe Atelier In 2015, she started her namesake brand and presented multiple successful collections at New York Fashion Week

2 cups cooked rice
2 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp powdered garlic
1/2 tsp powdered ginger
2 tbsp Bachan's Gluten-Free Japanese Barbecue Sauce
1 cup ham cubes
1/4 medium red onion, diced
1.5 cups shredded Brussels sprouts
2 tbsp pomegranate seeds
I Fluff the rice and gently mix in 1-2 tablespoons of water, two teaspoons of oil, and the garlic and ginger powder Coat the grains of rice evenly and set aside
2 Add 1 tbsp oil to a large frying pan or wok and sauté the ham over medium heat, occasionally stirring, for 1 minute
3 Add the onions and shredded brussels sprouts Cook, tossing, for about 1-2 minutes
4 Turn the heat down to low and add the rice Use a wooden spoon or spatula to break it up Crisp the rice for about 5 minutes
5 Turn the heat up to high, stir in Bachan's Gluten Free Barbeque Sauce, and fry, ensuring everything is smoky and crisp. Finish with the pomegranate seeds and enjoy immediately.

At the same time, we were learning of the splendor of Royal high tea as taught by Dr Karl, The Ginger Room owner, and High Tea expert Within this space, Egypt could interact and spread love and holiday cheer.

Q: A big issue today is the need for more positive role models. You are one yourself, and how do you make it look so easy and what keeps you up at night?
I appreciate you saying that I'm just living my truth and living authentically I'm the woman I always wanted to be, and Im glad that is projected as a positive role model As I look around the landscape, there are many amazing role models, not just women but men People must figure out what they need and avoid getting caught up in social media games or hooked on content scrolling When you scroll without intention, you're leaving it open for an algorithm to feed you information, some of which can help you, some of which can hurt you or feed insecurities Social media makes people feel very alone, empty, and behind Instead, we need to seek information, inspiration, and education
We need to feed ourselves and get back to that space where we start filling our cups with things that we know will be healthy for the mind, body, and spirit You can find that on social media, but what about books? What about fellowship? What about getting out in nature and enjoying the fresh air?
The thing which keeps me up at night is the knowledge that this generation is measuring their self-worth against what they see online A lot of those images and narratives are false themselves It isnt easy to measure up to something thats not even real I was watching a video online where they showed how some profiles are entirely computer-generated People think they're looking at a photo of someone, and its just a computer generation (deep fakes) Again, lets get our heads out of the clouds, stop measuring ourselves against social media, and be our best authentic selves
Q: What is your favorite holiday song, and how do you make this season special with your family?
“Silent Night” by The Temptations is my favorite holiday song It's a classic! It's nostalgic My grandma and granddad used to turn on music Christmas Eve which was the big tradition in my family before they passed away Everyone would be dancing around the house to holiday music, but when “Silent Night” by The Temptations came on my granddad would grab my grandmother and start slow dancing with her and everyone just cracked up because she’d turn beet red It's one of my favorite nostalgic holiday songs When it comes to our kids, Mike and I just try to carry the same traditions we grew up with We do go all out with holiday decorations for the kids. They love it. They get excited when they see things lit up anywhere from Halloween all the way through the Christmas holiday. The pumpkins, the bales of hay and then we light up the whole house We have huge trees and illuminated reindeer on the lawn Last year we had the reindeer lit on our front lawn, and one morning we looked out from the dining room window and there was actually a family of about eight real deer on the front lawn next to them Truly it was the cutest thing in the in the world and the kids got a kick out of it!
Q: Please share with us your favorite glam moments for Christmas with your mother or siblings.
My family is really casual during the holidays We don't put on a huge holiday party It's just a very intimate and introverted familial holiday On Christmas Eve, Mike, the kids, and I dress up in matching pajamas At first, Mike thought it was the corniest thing in the world, and he refused to put matching pajamas on But with all his daughters pressuring him, he gave in It's hard for him when all this estrogen surrounds him All three girls guilted him, he put it on, and then he got a kick out of it It was very silly, so every holiday now, I buy all the same pajamas for us to wear on Christmas Eve.
I will tell you a tradition that I love with my mother is gift wrapping She's a gift-wrapping queen! My mother used to work at a gift-wrapping center in a department store to pay her way through school She got so talented that people would come to the gift-wrapping center and request only her! By the time she stopped working there, the whole family had already become accustomed to taking all their gifts to my mother for her to wrap them It is something she really enjoyed and as a kid she would bring my sister and I into it Ultimately gift wrapping became our tradition together We even have gift-wrapping challenges and contests amongst ourselves
Q: A home is a place of refuge, and the importance of "Home" for the holidays is a tradition. Can you tell us where home originated for you as a girl and what memories are your favorites?
I'm from Philadelphia, the Broad and Olney area My mother lived directly next door to my grandparents for a few years, so we were a very close-knit family that did everything together So, for me, home originated in Philadelphia, although eventually, folks got married, and as the family grew, folks migrated My grandparents' house on Widener place had always been home for everyone It was the heart of the family When they sold that house, it was difficult for us to part ways with it
They bought it for $17,000 as their first home Generations grew up in it The whole neighborhood grew up in my grandparents' house so much that I must make my way to that street when I'm in Philadelphia One day I drove by, and this lady was outside planting roses, my grandmother's favorite flower I just sat in the car watching her plant rose bushes and wanted to get out and speak But I thought it might be creepy to run up to her and say, "my grandmother used to plant roses there too " The family living in that house is taking outstanding care of it Even my uncles and mom have shared that whenever they're driving through Philadelphia, although none of us live there anymore, we must always go back to that house and check on it because the house itself is like a family member It held so many memories
Q: Real estate is a bonding experience between you and your client; what makes the best realtors in a time such as now, and what is your vision for 2023?
Buying a house can be one of the most stressful things in a person's life, next to planning a wedding or getting a divorce I try to educate all of my clients before we even get started I simplify it so that it doesn't feel like rocket science and feels more fun The more people are prepared, the better the process goes
We take it step-by-step, and I always forecast the possibilities along the journey so they don't ever feel in the dark or alone That's why a lot of my clients have become friends To this day, I have tons of repeat clients I've watched them get married and have kids I've helped them buy their second, third, and fourth houses! When you go through a very emotional experience with someone, and you've been right there holding their hand all the way through, even after closing, you can't leave each other

Economists have been guessing! No one can deny that we're in a very turbulent time economically If you go to the supermarket, you'll see that the price of goods is extremely high There are predictions of a recession; simultaneously, there are those predicting a hyperinflationary period I don't make predictions Instead, I watch the world news and follow historic trends and cycles I will tell you that historically, through any economic condition, real estate has always been the smart place to put your money in the long term I'm not talking about if you want to buy a house and flip it That's short-term, but if you're saying I want to create generational wealth; I want to build a legacy for my family; I want to create passive income; I want to have a retirement plan that no one can take away from me, well then you know real estate is always the foundation of wealth
If you talk to any multimillionaire, a good portion of their portfolios are in real estate My advice is never to mind economic conditions, never mind what interest rates are NOW is always the right time to buy real estate People, of course, are watching the interest rates They're going up They're going down At the time that I'm doing this interview, they are between 7 and 8% That can be scary for a generation that's never seen interest rates as high But here is the reality check, when my grandparents purchased their first house, their interest rate was 22%! When my parents bought their first house, their interest rate was under 11% All of their elders were flipping like you got such a great deal! When I purchased the first house I was going to live in, I got shy of 7%, and guess what? Everybody flipped, telling me I got such a great deal. As a society, we've gotten spoiled with interest rates being in the twos and the threes We have gotten so used to it that we thought that was the norm, but it wasn't We were at a historical low Never had interest rates been so low People should be bold, get off the fence, and get in the market right now This is a wild card I'm throwing it out there What if this is the lowest you wind up seeing interest rates for the rest of your life or your generation you will have wish you got in? What's the worst-case scenario that could happen? If rates are high now and you're afraid they will go down Well, ok, but when they go down, you can refinance Get off the fence! Buy some real estate! Start creating some wealth!
Q: Are you head over heels for shoes, and if so, who is your favorite shoe designer?
I like nice things, yes, But at this time in my life, it's all about comfort. I could love some shoes, and I'll have them in my closet and might not be able to wear them because they hurt my back. I say that, laughing out loud, because that's just the truth! I may buy beautiful shoes, but I wear comfortable ones I no longer have a favorite designer because I stopped paying $800- $1000 for shoes I can't do that willy-nilly anymore, not when I know I could invest that money in my kid's college 529 savings plan or put it in a trust account for them to buy more properties I kind of guilt myself because if I spend a silly amount of money on material things because I know what that same money would do if I put it in a product with compounding interest instead
Q: Married to Real Estate is a great show. Congrats on the Critics’ Choice Awards Nomination and garnering over 15 million viewers for season 1. We are so excited for season 2 in January. You and your husband are quite the power team, how did you meet?
My husband and I met in New York City more than 18 years ago and what was so funny is we were both working in another career I was a radio personality, and he was a club DJ I always swore I would never date anybody in the entertainment industry Although I always thought he was adorable cute and a nice guy, part of me was also like, "oh, he's bad news so let me stay away from him " Then, we met again in another area of our lives where I was flipping a house in Newark, NJ, and he was a contractor I was looking for teams, so my mentor sent his team over to my house to help me out When he showed up, I was like, "listen, I asked for a contractor, not a DJ!" We got a good old hearty laugh because I never knew he was a contractor and had his business Being a DJ was just one side of him This gave me another lens of depth to examine him through I'm like, WOW! He's a good-looking guy. He's a nice guy but also a man of integrity and work ethic. Then I got to witness what a fantastic daddy he was to his daughter at the time He was patient with her, compassionate, loving, and not afraid to show love Again, I was like, WOW, I think I'm falling for him Fast forward, we finally went on a date, and after the first date, we fell in love, and we've been inseparable ever since That was 18 years ago, married more than 12 years but together that long I feel like I've married my best friend
Here's what I'll tell you marriage is not easy, and I know people watch our show "Married to Real Estate" on HGTV and may think they get along so great and they got it all figured out No, we've had a journey We've had highs, lows, and some of the same challenges many couples go through, but we decide every day that we wake up that what we built is worth it, and we're willing to do the work We're doing good!
Q: You created a planner and daily devotional called “Ignite Joy” which was a stretch from real estate for you. What made you want to create that?
It may feel like a stretch from real estate, but it's not a stretch for me or from who I am at my core Even though real estate is my career, it's not all I am as a woman and human. I need somebody to fill my cup sometimes. There are moments when I fall short and have to find inspiration The Ignite Joy planner came from recognizing that my process has been a journey I wanted to share that journey in a way that would inspire and help other people When I was very young, my dad gave me a Franklin Covey Planner I don't know if anybody remembers that) but it helped me write down my list of things to do All my tasks were organized, and I love that it became a habit But I recognized that I was living my life according to these checklists, not necessarily living it spiritually and purposefully I would feel accomplished for everything I had to do daily, but it wasn't feeding my soul
So I created the Ignite Joy planner to remind people that we can chase multiple income streams, but more importantly, we need to pursue multiple streams of joy!
Q: We see you are gearing up to launch a home collection, tell us more about that?
Yes, and I'm so excited! Indigo Road is my baby, and it's been a culmination of design, real estate, and a love of all things home. I've been working on it for years, and Indigo Road wrote itself. It will be rugs, draperies, furniture, and home accessories. I'm perfecting it now.
We're planning to do a soft launch in the spring, with the hard launch coming in the fall of next year, so be on the lookout for it The name Indigo Road came from the road less traveled, which has been my life The Indigo stone is very grounding and injects a lot of wisdom I feel my journey has been one of chasing truth and wisdom, which is why that was the perfect name for my line

For Grapefruit Syrup:
In a sealable container, add zest of 1 white grapefruit to 16 ounces of chilled simple syrup. Shake to agitate and refrigerate for 24 hours. Strain out zest, bottle and refrigerate.

Corii's beginning path for her education was in business Management, which is what she thought would be her overall mission of studies in college. She got into fashion as a minor in her third year. And over the five years, she did shows outside of school and tons of networking. She also traveled in participation to work with other upcoming designers.
During her undergrad, she was allowed to put on shows, which provoked her to make fashion her total major. Working internationally was also excellent and inspiring. After college, she moved to New York City & stayed there for about four years, raising money to later move to Paris to study for her master's degree, which was lifechanging.
