Dear Reader,

“I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June?” wrote L.. M. Montgomery in her novel Anne of the Island. “You’d get bored,” came the reply. We can never know the answer, I suppose, but I’m looking forward to a month of pondering just that during the longer and hopefully warmer days ahead.

In this month’s issue we remember the enormously successful village street party for the King’s Coronation with a special commemorative feature . Thank you to everyone who sent in letters and photo memories of the day; sadly we don’t have the space to publish them all, but on behalf of those who got in touch or took part in the day, we’d like to thank Dan Thomas and the small committed team of people who organised the event and made it such a successful and memorable day for so many people.

Get ready for another uniquely local celebration next month, when the annual Yealmpton Show opens its gates for the 134th time!

Til then, I wish you a month of early Summer sunshine!

Dear Friends,

May 4th saw the District Council elections. I was very grateful to be re elected and was pleased that Tom Edie, my friend and political colleague from Noss Mayo, was elected to replace Keith Baldry (who is, of course, irreplaceable). A big thank you to the 2046 people across the Ward who chose to cast a vote. For those of you interested, that’s a commendable 41% turn out.

Across the District, the political landscape has shifted quite dramatically. Of the 31 seats at Follaton House, the numbers are now 19 Lib Dems, 7 Tories, 3 Greens, 1 Labour and 1 Independent member. This is the first time since its inception in 1974 that South Hams has been Liberal Democrat run. As part of a commitment towards co operation between political parties, Cllr Julian Brazil (Leader of the Council) has invited both the Leaders of the Conservative and Green Parties to join his Executive: after all, we are all there to look after the residents of the South Hams. Then of course, 3 days later, we had the fantastic street party. What a fabulous day! Estimates on the numbers of people present vary wildly, but suffice to say, we managed to find homes for 300 burgers and 200 hot dogs. It was so lovely to see villagers (as well as their friends and family) of all ages, from all parts of the Parish, join together in a proper celebration.

To: the wonderful businesses who donated money in advance (you will have seen their logos on your invitation); the vintage car parade and its wonderfully bedecked drivers and passengers; the performers from Girls Night Out; the BBQ chaps; the teas, coffees and cakes ladies; Londis for the children’s drinks; Yam Jam who got everyone dancing; the unexpected but very welcome face painter; Miss Pinks Florist for the table flowers; the guys from the Parish Council who shut the road; the helpers on the day; and finally, the fabulous organizing committee, I would just like to offer my heartfelt thanks. It exceeded my wildest expectations and it is quite clear that the successful road closure means there’s no reason why we can’t have another one next year, and in all the years to follow…

Best, Dan

E lectric Car Charging P oints

During April we asked people in Yealmpton about their use of EV’s (electric vehicles). 45 people completed our small survey. Ten of these people own an electric car and all but one charge their EV battery at home. Another 25 people are planning to have an electric vehicle in the future. In addition 16 people said that they have visitors who need to charge an EV battery when they visit.

Almost all those who responded to our survey said that if a charge point with public access is installed in Yealmpton, it must be a rapid charge point, preferably 50kw, as this is the only practical way a charge point can be shared.

Holbe ton Film C lub

We also asked the businesses in the village that have parking space, whether they were considering installing a charge point. The petrol station/garage has considered this and decided that current installation costs are too high and unlikely to be recovered. The directors for Ben’s Farm Shop are considering installation at present as are St Austell Brewery for the Rose and Crown. The issue has not been discussed by the medical centre.

This small survey provides an interesting snapshot of the present situation.

June’s film is See How They Run (certificate 12A). A ‘whodunit’ film with added satire and comedy. In 1950s London, plans for a film version of a smash hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. A world weary inspector and an eager novice constable find themselves thrown into a glamorously sordid world, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.

This is showing on Friday the 9th June 2023 in Holbeton Village Hall. Doors open 7pm. The programme starts at 7:30pm. Tickets on the door still only £4, or £2 for accompanied children under 12 (cash only). Ice creams will be on sale for £1.

Our programme for the coming months is:

Empire Of Light, 15, Saturday 8th July

Living, 12A, Friday 11th August

A Man Called Otto, 15, Saturday 9th September

A History of the Pavilions, Part I

The following article, written by Ivor Griffiths in 1973, was recently found alongside various old black and white photographs in a forgotten box of memorabilia in the present day cricket pavilion. It details the history of Yealmpton cricket pavilion, including its re building after a devastating fire in 1963. The second part of the article and more photographs will be featured in the July issue of the Press. If you have any memories of these events or the people mentioned please share them with us for future publication: press@yealmpton.org

‘The earliest recollection of a pavilion was in the early 1900's with a small wooden hut which stood near the shed now used for machinery. This pavilion was passed to Mr. S. Coleman in lieu of a debt in 1909 when the cricket club was disbanded, but again used when sport restarted after the first war.

In 1927 when the club was reformed a larger new wood pavilion was built. The pavilion was opened in May and put Yealmpton way ahead of other villages in the sporting world. During the war no sport was possible and the pavilion was let as living accommodation, and consequently it was kept in good order during these years. At the end of the war little work was necessary to put the pavilion in first class order again.

Alas it came to an abrupt end, at noon July 10th 1963 wisps of smoke were seen coming from the pavilion and in seconds it was completely engulfed in flames. The heat was that intense that the grass was scorched to the cricket square, metal machinery and pipes were twisted beyond recognition, glass windows melted and people said the heat could be felt at Yealm Park. All equipment was lost. nothing was salvageable, it was a tragic blow to all concerned.

The next evening a meeting was held and it was decided the club would continue and a new pavilion would be built, a special meeting to be called as soon as our financial position was clarified. Meanwhile the cricket team used the recently disbanded bowling club hut and Woodlands A.F.C. erected a temporary hut for their visiting teams.

The special meeting showed we could expect £540 from insurance which included all equipment and fittings. A building fund was launched and the new pavilion became a reality. Ivor Griffiths. 1973

local Manor House for a cultural tour. The family had owned the estate for hundreds of years and our group tour was led by an uncle of the current owner who had grown up in the house. He entertained us with lots of anecdotes, translated by a friend for our benefit. It was extremely interesting, with the beautiful Dovecote probably being the highlight. A walk down to the lake and to a fountain spring in the woods was enjoyed by most of us – we were lucky that the weather had improved during the day.

With the weekend rapidly drawing to a close, our evening meal was in a traditional Creperie in St Matthieu. Against the rising wind we grouped for a final photo on the headland, taken by Julie (now 15) who had braved a night out with all the ‘oldies’ and enjoyed practising her English.

Most of the Twinners were returning on the Monday afternoon ferry so we all met in the square, named Place de Yealmpton incidentally, to wave goodbye. Some of us had taken cars and were either staying on or extending the holiday elsewhere in France. But everyone was in total agreement – it was a wonderful weekend; we were entertained royally; and deep and continuing friendships were renewed after the enforced three year break. Our French friends will visit us as a group next year, but in the meantime there will likely be individual exchanges and definitely regular conversations by email or Zoom!

Dementia needn’t stop you doing the things you’ve always loved

Holidays, travelling and visiting friends and family are an important part of our lives. At Dementia Friendly Parishes of the Yealm we know that it’s very important for people living with dementia and their families to continue to do the things they have always done perhaps with some additional help and support. Now that the holiday season is with us it’s good to hear that most airports and airlines are looking to improve our experience of travel. So here are some tips:

• When you book your holiday let your travel agent know if a member of your party has dementia (this is treated as a hidden disability)

• Always tick the ‘need additional support’ box to let them know that you will need more time or extra help at the airport, train station, or port

• If the person living with dementia has limited mobility ask for a wheelchair and a supporter, this may also help going through security checks/screening.

Feedback from people living with dementia and their travel companions has told us that their experience has been transformed by additional hands on help and guidance when checking in, managing luggage, and using the facilities. As a result, they can continue to holiday both home and abroad. Tesco blue disc. If you are shopping in local Tesco branches, please support us by using the blue disc given at the checkout. If we get the maximum number of blue discs, then we receive £1,500 from Tesco Community Grants.

Dear Editor, as a fairly new resident in Yealmpton (some 2years under our belt) we wanted to share our appreciation and delight at the big Yealmpton street party. What a do! Thanks so much to the volunteers, businesses, flower arrangers, singers and other acts that performed for us all and thereafter the litter pickers for a job really well done. I hope we get to see all the lively photos taken on the day and that we can do it again next year. THANK YOU!

Yealmpton can certainly put on a street party! What a day! A massive thank you to everyone who turned out and joined in to make the day so memorable. From the bunting erectors, table movers, coffee making, burger flipping, music making, face painters to the flower arranging, cake making, table decorating , shape shifters….you did Yealmpton proud! Without every single person who lent a hand, it simply couldn’t have happened. Congratulations to the small and very effective committee, it was great to be involved!

Meet the Hirers: Vinyasa Yoga

A bit about me and the class:

I am an experienced musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. I learnt to teach yoga so that I would always have a class that I would like to go to, and because it just makes me feel better!

I teach Vinyasa, which is a modern, dynamic style of yoga, and as I'm a Physio, flows and poses to help with injuries or to avoid injury often find their way into the class.

My classes are creative, fun and engaging. I have been teaching for 8years now and haven't ever taught the same class twice.

My class is super friendly and has all types of people and levels in it. If you feel that you want to challenge yourself, pack in lots of poses, feel stronger, more flexible and calmer, my class is right for you.

Quotes from students:

'I love going to Catherine's class because there's no pressure but she makes me feel I can give it a go.’ 'The difference in the way my body feels now from when I first came is amazing'

'Finding this class was the best thing that happened to me this year'

Ben’s Farm Shop Celebrates 40 Years in Business!

A little slice of Italy, in Yealmpton

on, employing nearly 100 local people.

Owner, Ben Watson, comments, ‘We’ve always stood for the provenance and quality of locally produced food. It feels so important to connect people with their local farmers and growers. Yes, you might pay a few pence more for your spuds, but you do it knowing that you’re supporting a local farmer and helping maintain a thriving local food economy.’

Back in January, our pizza pop up proved so popular, we decided to make it a more permanent fixture and transformed the Yealmpton farm shop café into a little slice of Italy, selling fresh baked Neapolitan style pizzas. Although not typically thought of as ‘local food’, the stone baked pizzas are in keeping with Ben’s Farm Shop ‘good food from good farming’ ethos, using only the finest British and Italian ingredients. The tomato sauce is made with Italian San Marzano tomatoes, the gold standard when it comes to making authentic Italian pizza. The toppings include charcuterie made from local, free range pork which is cooked and cured at the Ben’s Farm Shop kitchen near Staverton.

This year, Ben’s Farm Shop celebrates its 40th year of trading. Starting life as a small Totnes market stall, owner Ben Watson would make and sell free range sausages from his father’s farm. Now, 40 years later, the Yealmpton farm shop is one of four shops in South Dev

As part of the 40 year celebrations, Ben’s Farm Shop is holding a ’40 Year Field Day’ on the 17th June (11.30 6pm), in the field next to their Staverton shop. The free event will be a celebration of local food, farming and community, including talks, cookery demonstrations, food stalls and live music. And of course, Yealmpton pizza maestro, Frederico, will be there serving delicious stone baked pizzas from The Wild Dough pizza trailer.

In the meantime, delicious, fresh pizza is available daily at Ben’s Farm Shop, Yealmpton, between 12 3pm. Keep an eye on Ben’s Farm Shop social media for updates on opening times over the summer.

The meeting expressed concern that another commercial organisation was indicating it would be providing wifi to the community, with the prospect of more disruption and possible road works. Cllr Baldry indicated to the meeting he intended to write to Sir Gary Streeter in respect of this scenario.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Works Cllr Craddock had been liaising with the contractor who had undertaken work to the bus shelter opposite the Volunteer Inn. The contractor had also cleared mud and leaves from the bridge over the river from the Borough, cleared leaves and weeds from the bridge, and had top coated the gates in the Memorial Garden.

Public Rights of Way Cllr Barton advised the tree branch blocking Footpath 19 remains in situ. Cllr Thomas confirmed he would liaise with the SHDC Localities.

Roads and pavements—Cllr Tucker reported that joins in the tarmac at Yealm Park were breaking up and Cllr Thomas confirmed he would raise with the DCC Neighbourhood Highways Officer.

Environment—the meeting thanked Dr Durman for her YEG May report concerning: River Yealm / Yealm E coli level tests / Trees / EV Charging Point Survey / Light pollution / Applications for funds from Creacombe & Marlands solar panel farms—see full minutes for more information.

Emergency Dr Durman confirmed she would update the Emergency Plan.

LOCAL ISSUES

The Clerk confirmed he had liaised with Wildanet in respect of the Parish’s choice of preferred location for fibre optic installation

Public liability insurance for the MUGA . Cllr Craddock confirmed the YCA policy currently insured the MUGA for out of school time, under its Village Halls Insurance Policy operating on an ”event basis”. Cllr Craddock referred back to the YCA concerns that the MUGA created an administrative burden with little compensating income, and that the YCA was considering discontinuing responsibility for managing the MUGA. It was suggested a sub committee of the YCA review the management and the use by the community of the MUGA. Cllr Baldry added he felt a central issue was that the MUGA was not promoted and many villagers were not aware of its existence or benefits.

The date of the next meeting was set for 12th June at 7.30pm. Full Minutes www.yealmpton pc.gov.uk
