Unlike most games, badmi.nton is a game in which the object (shuttle) is greatly affected by wind resistance. It can travel as fast as 80 - 100 m.p.h. and yet slow down to floating speed. It is through understanding of this variation in speed that you can make effective use of "time" against your opponent or for your advantage. A forcefully hit shuttle does not lose much speed in the first 30 - 35 feet of its flight. However, in the next 10 feet it begins to slow down greatly because of air resistance. This implies that shote hit in a straight line, in a downward direction towards the flocr, land with the minimum of time, particularly if the shuttle travels less than 30 feet in distance.. Assuming -that the shuttle has been hit with a force ~hich can propel it about 60 m.p.h. (88 feet per second), it will take about 0.4 sees .•to reach the floor 35 feet away, as shown in the diagram. Yet a shuttle hit a distance 01 35 feet with the same force in a upward direction 30 feet high will take much more than twice (0.4) sees. In fact it will take approximately 3 ..4 seconds.

There:fore.

generally

speaking,

d04nward

,shots

can

be regarded

as attacking shots whereas upward strokes which help you gain time to recover can be regarded as defensive shots .. An important fact to note therefore is that drop ghots and other shots played f'rom base line to the net can be very dangerous since they travel a short distance and are not subjee~ed to as much wind resistance as base-line to baseline shots. However, a poorly executed drop at net, especially one which rloats, can brbtg about undersirable resul t.s - ,;i ving the opponen.t more tine to rush in f()l~ a "killlt• This is made worse with certa~n makes of shuttles which tend to l1hang" more ~/1hen dropping to farda the ground. Various movements and patt€rns of play must inevitably be built around this understsndinh of the variations of the speed of the bird. In singles play, for example, the base of' operations

should

be on,e 'Which is

approximately

10 feet

from the net and about 12 feet from the base line since yon have more time to get to a shc,t hit deep to the base Ij.ne"
