BOARD MEMBERS DETERMINE ACHIEVEMENT The achievement of a company's vision and mission depends on the wisdom of its board members. Yayasan Sabah Director, Datuk Musa Haji Aman said they must be capable of identifying opportunities and courageous enough to capitalize on them. He stressed that although board members may not be directly involved in the daily management of the company, the policies formulated by them would nonetheless become the directional compass by which the management will follow. "This is the basic tenet of the roles of the board members," he said at an Inhouse Seminar on the Roles and Responsibilities of Board of Directors, Audit Committee and Internal Audit Department at a leading hotel in Kota Kinabalu on July 30. The seminar was organised by the Manpower Development and Training Unit of the Human Resource and Administration Department. However, he said from his experience what was considered achievable mission often remained unachieved. He noted that in many instances some companies did not even know such discrepancies existed. Even at management level, he said discrepancies between "What should" and "What is" often occur with both management and board accepting such phenomenon as normal.

According to him, missions or objectives formulated were based on systematic analysis of the company's variables. They are, he said, the yardsticks by which the performance of the com-

ment as the policy implementers and the auditors who play the checking role. He hoped that the seminar would enhance the understanding and appreciation of each other's roles thus bringing about the desired results. About 80 participants comprising members of Ya as an Sabah' s Board of Trustees, ICSB and its group of companies Board of Directors and YS/ICSB senior managers attended the one-day seminar.

Building High Performance Team/ by Sandy Pokras. - London ; Kogan Page, 1996. - 92 pages. Building High Performance Team focuses on teams with a definite life cycle and not on any work groups or management teams whose mission never end. Team work is necessary where an organisation depends on it to achieve its goal. The product of the organisation is the teams' strength and not individual. The author sets out the four main elements of team development - forming groups, storming, norming and performing. This book also defines team direction, organising team and accelerating teamwork. The thirteen characteristics of a high performance unit are also given. This book is dedicated to problem-solving or corrective action on business process re-engmeenng, new process development, quality or continuous improvement, employee involvement and new product design and manufacture where they share responsibility, authority and accountability. The three books are available at the Tun Haji Mohd. Fuad Stephens Research Library.
