The call was made by Yayasan Sabah Deputy Director Datuk Mohd Tahir Jaafar when he officially closed the two-week long School Holiday Programme at Sekolah Menengah Agama, Kuala Selangor on June 4, 1999. He said students should heed school regulations and discipline and do away with negative elements.

obtained good results in last year's examinations should be more prepared and excel further in their future examinations like PMR, SPM, and STPM. There are altogether 507 Yayasan Sabah sponsored students studying in Form 1 to Form 6 in Peninsular Malaysia. The remaining 187 students who did not take part in the programme were involved in other educational activities in their respective regions. Datuk Mohd Tahir Jaafar later presented a watch each to 24 students who obtained straight As (7As-9As) i the 1998 PMR Examination.

ICSB HOSTS STUDY TOUR ON RIL

The study tour provided an opportunity for the participants to observe and discuss on various aspects of RIL practices from the economic, technical, environmental and social points with a view toward implementation pf such practices in their own countries. Participants for the study tour included high-powered officials from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, and Malaysia. RIL is defined as the implementation of a collection of harvesting technique that result in lower levels of incidental damage to the residual forest, reduced soil disturbance and erosion, and improved water quality. The need for RIL techniques in timber harvesting is necessary for certification under an ecolabeling scheme as well as for potential economic benefit and the benefits of greater assurance of a sustainable wood supply. ICSB's RIL programmes were started as a C02 Emission Project between New England Power (NEP) and ICSB in 1992 in an area totalling 1,415 ha over a period of three years. The contract area is in two parts - Parcel A of 430 ha in Lahad Datu and Parcel B - 985 ha in the Tawau Region. Parcel A was logged in 1993/1994 and Parcel B in 1994/1995. In both cases, adjacent areas were harvested at the same time by conventional methods to provide a a basis for comparison.

Innoprise Corporation Sdn. Bhd (ICSB) hosted a study tour on reduced impact logging (RIL) practices for high-level forestry officials and policy makers from the Asia-Pacific region from March 17- 18.

Forestry Management, Dr. Benni H. Sormin of the Ministry of Forestry and Estate Crops (MOFEC), Indonesia and Patrick D. Durst, Regional Forest Officer of FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific based in Penang.

The study tour was organi sed jointl y by Dr. I.G.M Tantra of the Ministry of Forestry and Estate Crops of Indonesia who is also the Task Manager for ad hoc Asia Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) Working Group on Sustainable

Yayasan Sabah's wholly-owned company, ICSB, is responsible in the realisation of RIL programmes in Sabah. leSB's RIL sites in Lahad Datu and Tawau were chosen for the study tour based on their extensive experience since 1992.

A second three- year con tract Agreement, signed in July 1995, operationalised the RIL techniques developed during the pilot projects, in a 980 ha area of forest in the Tawau Region. In carrying our RIL, pre-harvest planning for the preparation of the harvesting plan is a requisite. After that the harvesting will be carried out and after harvesting is completed, post harvest operation is done.

Parents and teachers should be proactive in imparting knowledge and skills to children. They need to work together on the learning process of children. This was disclosed by the Federal Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Peter Chin in his speech while officiating the Play in Language and Literacy course organised by Yayasan Sabah Child Development Centre in collaboration with Miri based Early Learning Centre on May 22, 1999 at the Holiday Inn, Miri. Datuk Peter expressed his hope that Yayasan Sabah and Yayasan Sarawak will get together and identify areas where they can playa role in promoting the fields of education, culture, toursim and forestry. Meanwhile Deputy Director of Yayasan Sabah, Datuk Mohd. Tahir

J aafar in his speech remarked that Yayasan Sabah believed informal teaching of children at a tender age is a better approach compared to formal one which might be too rigid for children to follow. Informal education is more natural and allows a child to explore new things in environment. "Our own Tadika Ria adopts a play way method of teaching that makes learning incidental. It recognises play as an integral part of a child's life," he revealed. He hoped when the course ended the participants would go back happy knowing that they have acquired the right tool to develop language and literacy in their children. "You are in a way helping to upgrade the educational standard of our country which is in line with Yayasan Sabah's mission to uplift the quality of life of all Malaysians," he enthused.

A group photo of the participants

The main objectives of the course are to provide an overview of current and recent research relating to young children as learners oflanguage and literacy; to understand the skills and knowledge required for young children to become language and literacy user~ to explore the role of play in language and literacy development and to experience planning for language and literacy play. The facilitator of the course is Linda Miller, a prominent figure in early years education. She has taught in preschools and primary schools and in schools for children with learning difficulties and disabilities. Linda is also Principal Lecturer in Early Years Education, University of Hertfordshire, England. Fourty six participants comprising parents and teachers attended the four-day course.

CONFl April 13 Yayasan Sabah with the theme Towards Reaching The Pinnacle. It is aimed at increasing public awareness of the vital role played by secretaries in business industries, government, and organisations and to reaffirm the dedication of secretaries to professional performance of their responsibilities. Secretaries should look at their respective career success in terms of the joy and passion for life, said the Minister in the Chief Minister's Department, Datuk Musa Haji Aman at the official opening of the Sabah Secretaries Conference '99 at Shangri-La's Tanjung Am Resort on April 13, 1999. However he said like many busy executives, secretaries are vulnerable to getting themselves "immersed" in their jobs to the extent of relegating other equally important things to the level of neglecting their families and society. "We cannot, in any definition describe ourselves as being successful, despite a successful career, but with a broken home for example. In view of our limited time, we need to be conscious about the importance of our established societal values if we are not to neglect these values," he said. He added if we think these values are important, it is important enough to spare quality time for them. And although limited, time can be made available through simple time management practice. "The most important factor is that first step of being consciously aware of our established values and their roles in the process of developing a successful life. The second factor would be the development of discipline to always act based on our established values," he elaborated. His speech was read by Deputy Director of Yayasan Sabah, Datuk Mohd. Tahir Jaafar.

According to Datuk Musa, in order to strive towards reaching our goals in life, people tend to lose sight of the very foundation of determination when faced with the slightest impediment in life be it job-related or otherwise. "Although this is not desirable considering its resultant effect, the trend is dangerously manifesting itself; a situation if not addressed, would lead to complacency which will eventually develop into a mediocre culture which does not augur well either for nation building or organisational development," he said.

Another two papers were presented on thl second day namely Flexihle Learning fo Working Adults: An Educationa Opportunity for Career Advancement b: Prof. Dr. Ahmad Zohdi Abdul Hamid 0 University Tun Abdul Razak; and D,t/j/i, Relations and the Secretary -Us/. You Intelpersonal Intelligence at Work by Haj Megat Yusof Haji Sharif of MYPD Trainin: Centre, Johor Baham. More than 90 participants from Yayasal Sabah, other statutory bodies and the privatI sectors are attending the annual conference which was held in conjunction with th, International Secretaries Week.

FOCUS ON GOAL

AND NEEDS -Datuk Tahir

In this context, he said to reach our goal in life, it is incumbent upon us to examine the process through which one must go and improve our aptitude in order to be able to surmount any obstacle along the way. "Dynamic secretaries would always perceive their roles as challenges and are greatly satisfied after having successfully discharged them. For this there is a need for career-oriented individuals who are intellectually active, innovative, and most of all willing to do more than is required," he stressed. This year's conference topics were strategically designed and arranged in sequence towards an all-encompassing personal development as career women. One paper was presented on the first day . The topic being "The Better Me" by Roslan Mokhtar of Mara Institute of Technology, Kota Kinabalu and Nor Farina Ridzuan of Win-Win Training Resources, Kuala Lumpur.

There is a need to focus in our goals of needs and expectations if we are to succeed in Iife, said Deputy Director of Yayasan Sabah, Datuk Mohd. Tahir Jaafar at the official closing of the Sabah Secretaries Conference '99 on April 14, 1999. "This can be done if we are able to shape our attitude and behaviour accordingly. This is because personal development in whatever form is always based on the basic tenet of human desires, that is our needs as well as our expectations in life," he added.

)oneo(

""For this, we would consciously beha\e to maxi mise the opportunity to fulfil our requirements. At the same time,

we would strive to mlnlmise whatever hindrances that may come between us and our goals," he added. "Since we are part of the human society, we must act within the permissible societal values, lest there will be chaos resulting our incapability to contain these hindrances," he elaborated. He said our innate power for self-development is one such example where the process of stimulating consciousness about something we knew but never get around to really believe in it, much less practice it. He believed through this conference, the participants would suddenly understand something, which they would have seemingly understood all their life, but never come to completely grasp it in a new way with entrenched determination to succeed.

This year's conference with the theme "Towards Reaching the Pinnacle" has benefited the partic ipan ts better in term s of their understanding of the contents of all the three topics. This is based on two reasons. One is due to the quality of the speakers who have been carefully chosen by Yayasan Sabah. Secondly the methodology that was applied based on seminarial form which was designed for optimal absorption of what had been presented besides maximising the utilization of the secretaries thinking power through syndicate discussions. "Because of these, I am confident that the conference had successfully stimulated the participants to organise themselves resourcefully towards new heights in their careers," he said. He also said Yayasan Sabah would continue to organise such conference in conjunction with the international secretaries week in future. "We shall utilize all the ingenuity, creativity, and professionalism of our staff to make future conference more responsive to their need as secretaries and career women," he concluded. Datuk Tahir also presented certificates participants of the annual conference.
