THE STARS LOOK DOWN SUNDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER, 2PM ADULTS £10, CHILDREN/CONCESSIONS £8 STUDIO THEATRE From the classic novel by A J Cronin and freely adapted by Alex Ferguson, The Stars Look Down is an uplifting family saga that you’re bound to enjoy. The tale follows a miner’s son who resolves to fight the profiteering that killed so many through underground accidents and starvation, as well as the injustice that wears down families and communities. A physical theatre version of this classic 30’s novel set in the North East, the show explores the life of young Davie Fenwick as he strives to gain decent wages and conditions for the pitmen. He falls in love with the coal owner’s daughter, but is eventually disillusioned of ever achieving justice after a preventable pit disaster claims the lives of many men.“Davie Fenwick leaves his mining village on a university scholarship, intent on returning to better support the miners against the owners. But he falls in love with Jenny who gets him to marry her and return home as a local school teacher before finishing his degree. Davie finds he is ill-at-ease in his role, the more so when he realises Jenny still loves her former boyfriend. When he finds that his father and the other miners are going to have to continue working on a possibly deadly coal seam, he decides to act.”

CONCEPT CONCERTS & PAA PRESENT

QUADROPHENIA THE ALBUM LIVE SATURDAY 12TH OCTOBER, 7.30PM £24 PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM Produced by Concept Concerts, this production acclaimed by a Sunday Times journalist as “mighty, moving and unstoppable,” sees 8-piece band, ‘The Goldhawks’, deliver a stunning live performance of The Who’s smash hit concept album, ‘Quadrophenia’. From the very first show it has received standing ovations. Released over 40 years ago in October 1973, The Who’s second rock opera ‘Quadrophenia’ was Pete Townshend’s homage to a pivotal moment in British youth culture. The album tells the story of Jimmy, a Mod, by chronicling his dissatisfaction with life, work, love, home, and family life. It served as an ode to teenage angst and counterculture rebellion, as well as a criticism of the British class, economic and educational systems. But you don’t need to be clued up on the history of the Mods and Rockers to enjoy this show, because at its core, ‘Quadrophenia’, which peaked at No. 2 on the UK and USA charts, is just about teenage confusion, conflict and frustration. Backed with exciting, and sometimes heartwrenching, large-screen projection of archival footage, the emotions, tension and raw power that the music demands is delivered masterfully by the fabulous, charismatic band, ‘The Goldhawks’, with amazing replication of The Who’s sound. To send you home on an even bigger high there are a few all-time classic Who hits to close the show!

RUBY WAX: HOW TO BE HUMAN WEDNESDAY 23RD OCTOBER, 7.30PM £23 PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM Based on her bestselling book, Ruby’s new show ‘How to Be Human’ answers every question you’ve ever had about evolution, thoughts, emotions, the body, addictions, relationships, sex, kids, the future and compassion. We can’t stop the future from arriving, no matter what drugs we’re on. But even if nearly every part of us becomes robotic, mechanical fingers crossed we’ll still have our minds. Hopefully we’ll use them for things like compassion, instead of just chasing what’s ‘better’ like a hamster on a wheel. If we can do that, we’re on the yellow brick road to happiness. This show is the follow up to Ruby’s sell out shows ‘Sane New World’ and ‘Frazzled’ and incorporates what she discovered whilst writing her latest book, including finding out about how the mind works with monk Gelong Thubten and learning from neuroscientist Ash Ranpura, where everything that makes us ‘us’ can be found in the brain. Outrageously witty and smart, blending brilliant comedy and insightful life lessons, How To Be Human is the show you need to help you upgrade your mind as much as you’ve upgraded your iPhone. 16+

THURSDAY 24TH OCTOBER, 7.30PM ADULTS £15, CHILDREN £10, YARM PUPILS £8 FRIARAGE THEATRE Royal Opera favourite Bryn Terfel heads the cast for this new production of Donizetti’s comedy of domestic drama across two generations. The witty story of a middle-aged man whose supposed young wife runs rings around him–with her own ulterior romantic purpose in mind–has long delighted and surprised audiences, not least as presented with the sparkle of its music and the virtuoso skill of its performers. Damiano Michieletto’s exhilarating production shows how contemporary the characters still are and how immediate and touching the story remains. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.

‘In Search of Beethoven’ addresses the romantic myth that Beethoven was a heroic, tormented figure battling to overcome his tragic fate of deafness and who searched for his ‘immortal beloved’ but remained unmarried. It delves beyond the image of the tortured, bad-tempered, unhinged personality, to reveal someone quite different and far more interesting. ‘In Search of Beethoven’ brings together the world’s leading performers and experts on Beethoven to reveal new insights into this legendary composer. The line-up of performers and interviewees includes Gianandrea Noseda, Sir Roger Norrington, Riccardo Chailly, Claudio Abbado, Fabio Luisi, Frans Brüggen, Ronald Brautigam, Hélène Grimaud, Vadim Repin, Janine Jansen, Paul Lewis, Lars Vogt, and Emanuel Ax, among others. The film has been called the best film ever made on Beethoven – and is the choice of the Beethoven Haus (Beethoven’s birthplace) as the ‘go to’ film on Beethoven.

FRIARAGE THEATRE The Royal Ballet’s glorious production of ‘The Nutcracker’, created by Peter Wright in1984, is the production par excellence of an all-time ballet favourite. It is Christmas Eve and Herr Drosselmeyer the magician sweeps young Clara away on a fantasy adventure in which time is suspended, the family living-room becomes a great battlefield, and a magical journey takes them through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets. Tchaikovsky’s glittering score, the gorgeous festive stage designs, and The Royal Ballet’s captivating dancing including an exquisite pas de deux between the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince, make this Nutcracker the quintessential Christmas experience.
