Volunteer Activities

I do hope that you all enjoyed the February edition of the Newsletter.

We are very lucky to have lots of volunteers who do a variety of things for us. Therefore I thought I would start a column to record what our volunteers do for us. If you do anything on behalf of Homefinders then please let me know and I will include it in the next edition of our newsletter. It doesn’t matter how small it is.

Since the previous newsletter was compiled I had a little baby boy who we called Montgomery Anthony Wright. Well I say little, he was 10 pound 10 when he was born!

I would like to thank Marguerite Lees for her donation of stamps.

Ronnie our greyhound didn’t bother at all about the new arrival, he just peered into the moses basket and then lay back onto his bed! I think he thought not another one!

Dawn and Terry Duncombe wrote to me to say that they have been involved with Homefinders for the past seven years. They help out with fundraising at the stadium, they buy treats every week for the dogs, two bags of gravy bones and a bunch of chews. They also save two pennies, one pennies and five pences which raise £16-00 every four months.

I do hope that those of you who made it to the first open day of the year did enjoy it.

Now that things have calmed down a bit here I am hoping to attend some of the summer events.

Please do not hesitate to let me know your thoughts good or bad about the newsletter.

I am keen to add some additional features to the Newsletter I have a few ideas in mind which I intend to try in the next Newsletter, however if you have any features that you would like me to include then please let me know Hopefully the summer will soon arrive and all the dogs will be able to enjoy some sunshine!

Pets at Home run a VIP card scheme whereby you register with them and receive certain benefits but more importantly you are also helping us as every use of the card means gaining essential supplies for our kennels.

Diane Nedza and Gil Duncombe have taken advantage of the Barclays Bank scheme for staff who help charities. A donation is made to help with Open Days. For example £750 was donated for the October Open Day. Gil and Diane make lots of things for us to sell and their help is invaluable.

THE CO-OP We are this year’s chosen charity at The Co-op at Bradwell. They will be raising money for us through various schemes throughout the year. Janet Palmer, one of our volunteers, instigated this and we are very grateful to her.

Karen Jones at The Co-op in Hellesdon has also initiated a couple of charitable schemes that benefit us. People who shop there donate either duvets or sardines and we have seen good numbers of both.

TAVERHAM VETS We are the chosen charity to benefit from money raised at Taverham Vet’s Dog Show on Sunday 4th August at Costessey Centre Park. This is run by the Longwater Road branch and we are delighted to be chosen.

PETPLAN As you will be aware we offer 4 weeks free insurance with all newly owned dogs. We recommend taking out insurance whether it be Petplan or not but are very pleased to say that for every Petplan policy taken out and/or renewed we receive some commission. The total amount of commission for the year 2012 was £4341 so, along with various other useful things provided by Petplan, you can see how valuable that is to us.

PGL JOINERY Made and fitted the new doors on our kennels plus other things and donate regularly to our dogs. Phil (who has Devon and Zoe), one of our volunteers is involved with this and does a great job.

EDWARDS LEATHERCRAFT John Edwards, who has a shop at Downham Market, makes all our leather collars and leads and can make personalised leather goods of any sort. He can be found at www.edwardsleathercraft.co.uk There are many other people and associations that give their help on a regular basis including Fakenham Racecourse, Terry Fewell (Tractor Rallies), The Rose and Crown Pub, Frettenham, Rowan House and many more. The help is much valued and we are very grateful to everybody.

Co-ordinator’s Bit I always make a big thing about the work our volunteers do and quite rightly as we would be in difficulty without them all. In the last newsletter I told about dogs who were helping people and this time I add a couple of pictures of them.

Our next Open Day on 23rd June includes our popular Greyhound Show. It is all for fun and the class list can be found in this issue. The final class is to be “Best Trick” and I hope we will have a lot of clever dogs showing off their talents however simple or complex they are. So get practising!

Amendments to our Events list for this year.

Wings and Wheels has now been changed completely and is now part of a country show later in the year. As of now we have not been allocated a place.

Additions We will be attending Hellesdon Carnival on Saturday 20th July at the Community Centre.

Devon (Jeffys Spotty), a Pets as Therapy dog with his owner Barbara and some of the people he goes to visit.

We will also be attending Taverham Vets Dog Show, as we are the chosen charity for that day. Sunday August 4th at Costessey Centre Park. It would be great to see loads of our greyhounds there whether entering the dog show or just popping along to see us.

Jane and Hugo (Cross Boss).Jane takes many of the dogs awaiting homes out for long walks to get them used to being out and about and give them experience of the countryside, town life and meeting other dogs and people.

Star (Holycross Star) and Matthew whose family having given Star a home in February now help with walking the other dogs at the kennels and stand on the gate at the stadium. It was as though Star was trained to bring them back to help!! We wouldn’t do anything like that ...would we?

Like everybody we are hoping for a good summer after a very difficult winter and our summer events are underway.You are welcome to join us at any of the events on the list (see last newsletter) or just say hello if you are passing by.

As you are reading this I will be on a cruise ship somewhere in the Baltic sipping a cold drink and basking in the sunshine. It is very hard, I know but I thought I should give it a try! However I will be back in time for the Open Day so I hope to see you all there.

Letters We receive many letters cards and emails from owners telling us all sorts of things about their dogs (we do get letters from the dogs also!). It is great to hear from you, even if it is a concern or for advice or sad news, it helps us to keep in touch with you and the dogs and we love to know how the dogs are getting on. We print some of the letters or stories and hope they are enjoyed and perhaps useful to you.

Hi Jules, I wanted to say hello to all my friends and fans out there, it is Diamond (Garda Diamond) here, the greyhound who thought she would never to find a permanent new home.

This month I am celebrating my 10th birthday with my new mum and dad, Sally and Ian. As you can see from my photos I am certainly settled in and have firmly got my feet under the table in the year and three quarters I have been here. I am very well behaved when I go out for my walks, although sometimes I have a game with them to get a treat before I will have my lead on.

I have been on 3 lovely holidays with mum and dad, and my auntie Myra, of whom I am especially fond. She also brings me treats!! I have several doggy friends, including a Maltese terrier called Snowy, and all the greyhounds at Jim Daly’s kennels. It turns out that Jim was the one who brought me into the world.

I want to give a very special thank you to Joanne at the kennels, because she was the one who never gave up on me.

XX Hi Jules It is Molly (Invincia Molly) here, I have a lot to tell you about my time in Rackheath but I’ll think I’ll start here by telling you that I have been looking over people’s walls, not once, but twice, because I am just so nosey. I have been on a visit to “Pets at Home” where I saw some awesome rabbits which

looked kind of familiar! I have been on the bus as well and I sat in the middle of the aisle so people just had to give me strokes!!

I also love playing with my new friends at the park and in the garden with my favourite red ball!! I have been on a train to Cromer and we went onto the beach, but I didn’t really fancy dipping my paws in the sea!! Maybe I will when I’m allowed back on the beach in September!!

I hope that all the dogs at the kennels looking for homes get a fantastic home like me. I’m loving my life here!!

Lots of love from Fiona, William and Molly Hi Jules, Today Frankie (Glenske Franti) went to the vets to have an X-ray to see if he had broken his tail (he had!) and he was so laid back that Bruce, the vet, did not even have to sedate him, never mind anaesthetise him. This not only saved us from having to bring a very dopey dog home, but also meant a much smaller bill! I had told Bruce that what Frankie was best at was just lying around, but I don’t think he believed JUST how ‘laid back’ Frankie was! Should have shown him this photo..........

Erin and Reg Batt Hi Jules, Kylies’ (Kyleo Lass) Adoption has all gone really well and David’s contact advice and the CD have been excellent!

As you can see she is settled in nicely and the romance set amongst the snow flakes was well founded.

Still a nervous girl if she hears a gun go off, and it took 3 weeks to get her to stop freezing and being stubborn if a car went by. When she jumped on the garden pond ice and went straight through she looked very upset, cold, shiveringly down cast, and she made her only puddle that night.

Hated a hair drier, (as much as she does the vacuum cleaner), but a warm towel rub soon had her settled again. Kylie is a happy, clean, contented lovely girl, who has made a 74-year old a kind and loving companion!

Hi Jules, Katy (Bandicoot Kiki) continues to give us a great deal of pleasure. She is so polite and well behaved, so much so that you could take her to the Ritz for afternoon tea!

The only thing that really rouses her is the sight of (or perceived sight of) a furry tail. This sets her off on a barking mad dash for the door.

We love to see her run round the garden, with the freedom to do exactly as she likes. She seems to particularly love Harry which is very gratifying and she has a loyal fan base of human admirers.

Hi Jules, Just thought I would send you a picture of Lark (Cloncunny Lark) and her mate Murry.

We have had Lark four years now. She will be 9 in November, I can’t believe where the time has gone.

When we got Lark we were waiting in the car for her to come back from a home. She is still very nervous.

She is having a nice rest with Peter.

Yours sincerely Peter and Janet Green In the last newsletter there was a letter about Lola (Princess Belinda), however the picture of Princess Belinda was missed off. As we didn’t want Lola to miss out we have enclosed a picture of her in this issue.

Hi Jules, We had Bailey (Weyhey Tom) for just over two years.

Suddenly on the 18th December Bailey started crying in pain so we took him to an emergency vet who gave him painkillers. We restricted his walks and he couldn’t get in or out of the car so walking round the block was all he was able to do.

However over the coming next two weeks he had a lot of muscle wastage in his back right leg. We rang David

Jones who was brilliant, he gave us good advice and was there when I needed him.

We took Bailey back to the vets and he was diagnosed with hip displaxia, however the leg got weaker and the vet thought it might be a tumour. We were referred to Fakenham vets who also thought it may be a tumour.

They did a CT scan and after a horrendous two hour wait the vet said that Bailey had had an explosive disc in his spine which compacted on the nerves which couldn’t send messages to the muscle hence the severe wastage. With medication and perhaps steroid injections it may kick start the nerves to his leg which may get him a bit better in time. The important thing is that we still have him, he is not in pain, he can come on holiday with us but cannot do the long, long walks we do but hey who cares.

Kind regards Dawn and Terry Duncombe Hi Jules, Thought I’d update you on my lovely gummy hound, Blue (Bodell Blue). He had his final 2 teeth removed last month, after a long battle with gum disease. He is so much happier though, very perky for an 11 year old. It’s amazing how he still manages the same food, we should have named him Dyson really!

Kind regards Michele, Stu, Blue and Jack Hi everyone, Jubbly (ballybrazil Mimi) here, I thought I would let you know that my mum has been working hard to provide things to sell at the next Open days. For the next one there will be homemade strawberry jam, using local strawberries, and marmalade.

She has also made parchment baskets filled with sweets.

There will be tea-light holders, with a Yankee candle inside, solar lights and other items for your summer garden. Handmade gift bags will also be for sale. So come along and treat yourselves and make a greyhound and her mum very happy. I would just mention that mum did this in her own time and I have not missed out on any of my walks or daytime sleeps, so I am still enjoying luxury living !

Greyhound Open Day - March 2013 We held our first open day of the year on 24th March. The Open Day was extremely cold and numbers were slightly down on last year. However, many of our intrepid greyhound owners turned out helped by Cheryl’s lovely hot soup.

We raised over ÂŁ1000 which was brilliant considering the lower turn out. Everybody enjoyed it as usual, lots of chat, smiles and waggy tails.

It is with deep sorrow that Dave and I write Max (Shamoyn) – 2001-2013* to let you know that I know many of the Pete (AKA Meaty) volunteers who were passed away on helping at Crystal’s farm Saturday 11th May. As will remember Max, my many of you will gentle giant. Max had remember, Pete was a Cushings disease for almost sponsor dog for a 3 years and initially we were while and spent most managing it with medication of his life in the (although it cannot be cured). kennels before coming to live with us in Beeston Regis.

However, in the last few He was a beautiful boy who settled in well and asked months it became clear that only for lots of love, good food and a comfy bed. He the effects on his immune enriched our lives for almost 4 years and was just 1 system were beginning to tell month away from his 15th birthday when, sadly, we had and about 3 weeks ago he developed pancreatitis and to make the dreadful decision to end his life. His decline liver problems (both connected to the Cushings). was rapid - severe renal failure - no hope. He was an anxious boy with dogs he didn’t know, but he had a Despite treatment he went downhill and had clearly second home in Fakenham with our friends and their given up. Sadly, the kindest thing was to let him go. two dogs, he was great friends with Rosie and We had 4 years of pleasure from his gentle company and comfortable with Dillon a G.S. cross. my Crystal and I are going to miss him very much.

He was wonderful with all the grandchildren and enjoyed Linda Johnson trips to Manchester. He was loved by many and enjoyed every day of his life - albeit much of the time was spent in total relaxation - asleep! We loved him to bits and now Bonzo (Oopys Gibbs) have a huge empty space in our home and in our hearts.

It is with deep sadness that on 29th April we had Bonzo Sue and Dave put to sleep.

Bonzo has been a huge part of our lives for the past five and a half years from the day we collected him he has consumed our life.

We have such great memories to treasure as he was one in a million.

No more do we have to grab the banister rail as he comes charging down the stairs, no more do we hear the squeak of his toys as he plays with them. No more does he stand looking at the door to his treat cupboard, wagging his tail. No more do we have to fill in the holes in our back lawn. No more does he stand so grandly in the garden barking at the birds. No more does he spread on the sofa demanding we rub his belly and no more does he greet us at the door when we come home.

(Biltan) Rachel We got (Biltan) Rachel (24.5.99 – 6.2.13) from the old kennels in Spixworth back in October 2004. She instantly became a part of the family - she was such a lovely, friendly and good natured girl. In fact, it could be said she became a right “Daddy’s Girl” and like most dogs knew exactly how to get what she wanted just by staring at me with her big brown eyes.

We made new friends during our nearly 8 and a half years together on our daily walks.

Unfortunately she passed away in my arms at the vets on February 6th after a short illness. A truly heart breaking day. The house seems empty without her but we will always have the treasured memories and ample photos of our beloved Rachie.
