A Note From The Editor: On October 16th we will be having our final open day of the year. Please come along and grab yourself a bargain or two! We are having a clear out! At our other open days’ we have enjoyed the greyhound show and the auction. This time it’s bric-a-brac time! Who knows what bargains there are to be found. There will be the usual tombola, raffle, cakes and refreshments available.

Christmas cards, birthday cards, dog coats and collars. At the last open day we sold out of our lovely knitted coats but the knitting needles have been clicking away and we will have more of them in time for the cold winter nights. So, buy one while you can at a very reasonable price of £8.00.

We are looking forward to seeing you and your dogs very soon. As you know it is always a pleasure to meet up again!

Co-ordinator’s Bit I start with sad news that my Abi, the greyhound that got me started in the Homing activities, passed away at the age of 12. It is something that we all know will happen one day, and has happened to many of you, but it is still hard to take and very upsetting. Abi, single handedly, changed our lives and has left a huge gap at home; I just hope she is as bossy with the angels as she was with us.

The Open Day in June was a huge success with an amazing number of greyhounds and owners attending. It was also good to see many trainers there. In fact one of them walked away with most of the prizes!! Linda and Jane did a marvellous job with the judging which is definitely not easy, as everyone knows that their greyhound is better looking and behaved than everyone else’s! Our Auction Open Day in August was another success with people bidding intensely.

Thanks to everyone who brought a tin of sardines with them. The dogs in kennels are certainly enjoying them.

There are many, many people and groups that donate money or goods in varying quantities and they are all very much appreciated and valued. I can only mention a few (there aren’t enough pages for them all,) that might be of interest. The Seagull Theatre in Pakefield raised £200 for us and one of our owners went along to collect the cheque (Thank you Barry, Pam and Jack).

Elgoods Brewery has been very good to us throughout the year culminating in attending a craft fair in the brewery gardens. Jessica Jillings, a young lady from Oulton Broad raised money for us on her own, see below. Barbara Houlding and friends raise money for us through physiotherapy.

What It Means To Have Sponsored Diamond What does it mean to have sponsored Diamond? I will tell you. It means the world to me!

I was a victim of a very violent armed robbery a while back and it has totally wrecked my confidence and my life. I went back to work on the same day but I shouldn’t have done. I couldn’t go on and I had to leave my job.

I still get vivid flashbacks, nightmares and panic attacks.

Life sure isn’t easy! But that’s how it is!

I would just like to say what a great day I had at the open day and dog show in June at the kennels. I think David and all the volunteers are doing a great job. It was so nice to meet up with so many of my ex-racing hounds and their new mums and dads. In an ideal world I would take them all home with me but it is not possible to take them al! It is no secret to Lynda and David that I was sceptical about re-homing my dogs; and I always believed the dogs were happy to live the rest of their lives in my kennels. I now see I was wrong and being selfish. Who am I to deny these lovely animals a loving home and sofa for the rest of their lives, as the old saying goes if you truly love them let them go.

Congratulations to Poppy and Lola for winning the bitches and puppies categories at the show. I am so proud of you!

My lovely little Shadow is coming on leaps and bounds. She is so affectionate and is now learning to play which is lovely to see. She has a new bed, which she immediately loved. I am working hard on her coat, which is beginning to shine with the help of daily sardines! I am hoping that, with the exercise she gets here in the garden- all three rush in and out at will- she will lose a little weight as I feel she is just a tiny bit “chunky”!

A while back, not feeling too well, I thought I’d go for a lie down. Up jumped Swift and lay with her head over my legs, shortly followed by Tina/Shadow who lay with her head just under my chin. All three of us then fell asleep and when I woke I found Lucy had joined us from her favourite sofa! I was sorry I couldn’t get a photograph! Amanda.

Hi, my name is Rosie.

I moved in with my new people at the end of December 2009, after a very traumatic time, having been left on Cromer cliffs. I was a rather shy, nervous girl of three years old, but had been well house-trained. I soon got my feet under the table and made myself at home. I taught mum and dad not to leave one and a half lbs of frozen steak out to defrost whilst they went to the theatre for the evening!

I am very laid-back and my favourite pastime is resting on the settee, sometimes sharing it with my dad! My laid-back approach to everything means I can do no wrong but I’m afraid that the photo that was taken of me after a visit to the kitchen waste bin rather gave my nosiness away! They just laughed and thought that having the photo circulated would be punishment enough!

Hi Lynda, Pete (AKA Meaty) here, Well, I am beginning to feel my age, I’m 13 now. The joints are getting rather stiff but I still like to go for my walks although not too far. I like to bark at all the neighbourhood dogs just to let them know I am still around!

My friends in the photos are Lulu the greyhound and Fudge the springer. They live in Fakenham and I go to visit them at their house and they come to visit me at mine.

We go for walks together and share beds. Fudge is very tactile and often lays on me but I don’t mind. Rosie has also been to my house and she is my friend as well.

Tina (Bilton Tinka)

Tina here. I enjoyed my holiday on a boat on the Norfolk Broads. I was with my mates King, Lucky and Bobby. As you can see by the photos they had me on lookout duty all the time while they had a good rest! Never mind, we all had a good time. I was a bit seasick at first but I soon got over it. I hope they take me again next year!

Of course I am also a bit of a celeb winning rosettes at Open Day but I am not going to get big headed about it!

Well, pretty exhausted now so had better get a little more rest!!

Hi everyone,

Hello Lynda, just an update on our beautiful dog Paddy.

Miller here; reporting on my wonderful life.

I went to live with my new mummy and daddy back in February and I’ve got them just where I want them! I only have to look at them with my big brown sorrowful eyes and they are putty in my paws! I love all the usual things, going for lovely long walks, going away in the caravan, etc. etc.

Just when I thought life couldn’t get any better they asked me if I would like a lady friend. So one Sunday we went to the kennels to take a look. I didn’t get a lot of choice though as there was only one gal there, but when she came out, boy it was love at first sight! I got her in the back of the car and gave her ears a good wash. She makes me very happy, though she is a bit bossy at times!

Marley in the ring, having just won Best 4-5 year old dog at the Greyhound Extravaganza. And “resting” with Jack during the Lions event at Oulton Broad.

We hadn’t had a dog for over ten years but the time seemed right to have one again. So off we went to Hainford with our two youngest children, Charlotte (14) and Kathryn (11). We all liked a couple of black dogs. One was Ike (I Can) and the other was Buddy (Minesabud). We decided to take Ike home and our son David and his girlfriend Louise gave a home to Buddy. We have changed his name to Paddy. For a couple of days he was very jumpy and nervous, he had an upset tummy, but very quickly he settled into home life. He’s taken over the couch so we sit on the floor! He loves to play with the girls in the garden and chases them about. When he’s not asleep he’s in the kitchen waiting for the fridge door to open looking for his favourite food. But he’s most happy when out walking where it’s quiet. We are trying to walk the whole length of the Marriots Way doing a couple of miles at a time, then turning back to walk back to the car. So far we have clocked up over thirty miles.

We take Paddy to see Buddy every Sunday; we have a nice long walk along the river. They get along very well together. The two dogs have given us all lots of fun times and laughs, especially when Paddy lies asleep on his back with his legs in the air. All in all we are so glad we have our dog.

Harry has made lots of new four-legged friends and is very happy with his new life.

Bailey was entered in to the Lowestoft fun dog show recently. He came first in “Best Condition” and first in “Dog That Doesn’t Look Anything Like It’s Owner”! He then went through to the overall “Best In Show”. Out of eighty dogs he won first place! He received a lovely cup and rosettes.

Huggy, now Monty continues to settle in well (when he’s awake!) and is learning new vocabulary all the time. Especially “no”, “down” and “leave” all of which usually refer to food!

He is such a proud boy when he delivers a raw onion to our bed or a dirty sock in front of company in the lounge. More than one person has wondered where their biscuit or sandwich has suddenly disappeared to!

The dog who won on most points in the different classes was also a lovely greyhound. An excellent result for the greyhounds! Dawn, Terry and Milly.

He is a very clean boy and keep the shingle and the expertly planted patio tubs regularly irrigated. He adores making friends with everyone and all of the dogs he meets on his walks.

Dawn also wrote to say what a lovely day they all had at the stadium back in May. That event will certainly be repeated next year as it was such a great success and enjoyed by those who attended.

He flattens out the creases on the clean sheet when I change the bed!

Fund raising at the stadium continues to be a great success.

We have volunteers with collection tins at entrances and the weekly raffle. If you would like to join our band of volunteers we are looking for more help during 2012.Your help is needed during school holidays, including Easter, and on a weekly basis throughout the year. And I now realise that I need a bigger kitchen. As five foot or more is taken up by Monty stretching out, catching crumbs as I prepare food. He also eats bras and tennis balls!!!
