The Porky image is a nod to that tenacious, indomitable spirit that has defined Javelinas for generations. The illustration includes a beanie atop Porky’s head—a tribute to a long-standing tradition during the Texas A&I years in which freshmen were encouraged to wear green, blue or gold beanies to identify themselves as freshman and to unite the new class. The freshman beanie tradition ended in the 1970s.
Porky pays homage to the university’s proud past. The mark offers alumni and current Javelinas a link to history, while also celebrating the Javelina spirit. As the first institution of higher learning in South Texas, the university has played an important role in the development of South Texas for nearly a century.
Porky is a symbol of the tenacious, indomitable spirit of the university and long-standing tradition. His appearance at an event or on an award is meant to declare to the community/world that the recipient(s) have displayed the highest standard of achievement and excellence, and/or have gone above and beyond as befits a Javelina student/ alumni.
As a recognition mark, Porky is to be used only when recognizing special events, awards or other acknowledgments.
