RNLI Lifeboat Station
Liverpool, UK
2020 Oct. - Dec.
ARCH202 Design Coursework
Tutor: Marcus Schofield Individual
RNLI History Project Brief
The project is to build a lifeboat station for Ainsdale beach, “one of the premier beaches in the UK for extreme kite activities, with zones set aside for kite buggy & land board". The chosen site for the RNLI station sits in the sand dunes above the beach, in an area of approx. 9000 sqm.

There are lots of people who are always ready to serve the public in obscure ways, police officers, street cleaners, firefighters… These are characters who are easily ignored by the enormous while they do lots of contributions to society. For the aspect of beach safeguards, people will not notice them even when they are in trouble until they are saved by the brave safeguards. In the lifeboat station design, I want to stress how the Ainsdale beach is protected by the RNLI. This idea will not only improve the social esteem of the RNLI volunteers but also make the tourists feel safer.
For a charity-funded organization, it is important to let the public know how it works and how the donation is used if the work of the RNLI lifeboat station is transparent and accessible to the public while not interrupting volunteers’ work. Since it is a lifeboat station, working efficiently should be one of its basic requirements
Working Method
Workflow
RNLI needs to work more effectively in partnership with other organisations and identify how to influence lifesaving through policy-makers and regulators.
Influence Supervise
RNLI can prevent more tragedies through the lifeguard service around the UK and Ireland – and help international communities to set up lifeguard services.
Rescue
While maintaining our core, world-class lifeboat and lifeguard services, we will further develop our relationship with other search and rescue organizations in the UK and Ireland to help save more lives.
Educate
Our education work can save more lives by promoting safety through behavior change campaigns, products and messages, and by working more closely with communities.
2001 1936 1824 Sir William Hillary’s vision for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea became a reality in Bishopsgate’s trendy London Tavern on 4 March 1824. Foundation The arrival of the motor lifeboat Royal Silver Jubilee at Wellsnext-the-Sea in Norfolk marked the end of the iconic sight of horses pulling lifeboats. Last horse-powered launch RNLI lifeguards starting patrolling beaches in 2001 and are now an essential part of our seamless rescue service from the beach to the open sea. RNLI Lifeguards In-house manufacture of the Shannon class lifeboat brings a new era of lifesaving to the RNLI. Center Atrium
To priorate the main lifeboat for the station, the main boat hall is located at the center of the volumn and all the function areas are located around.

Clear the center mass to create an atrium for the main boat hall and create a circulation around the boat for maintenance and repair.
Function Division
The surrounding volumn is divided into four main sections, including public Space, control room, staff working space, and staff living space.
Reducing Public Opening
Creating a front opening underneath the control section for the lifeboat to get in and out and reducing the volumn for public functional space to ensure the landslide of working space.
Creating a clear wide opening for the public to enter and remaining a relatively open space for the public. The staff living sector is also reduced to provide better floor height for public openings.
Public Circulation & Ajusting
Adding circulation around the main boat hall for the public, allow them to have a full view of the inside lifeboat station. Compressor the working area to create a staff corridor across the whole working section. Enlarge the Control room to the public part to communicate public with the station.
Staff Corridor
Set back the working and living volumn and create a corridor through the transportation core for staffs and crews to connect their workflow.
Isometric

Final Model
Adding facades with rooftops, the public volumn used glass cladding to keep its transparency. Special rooftop sun shading is added to the middle atrium to control natural sunlight.
Rooftop Sun Shading
The prefabricated concrete shading sustitute direct sunlight with soft indirect natural lightning, preventing potential damage and interuption to the boat and work.
Staff Bedroom
Bedrooms for staffs working for night shift.
For crews to change from regular suit to working suit & equipment.
Crew Changing Transportation Core
Connect staffs' working section & living section while works as a boundary to divide them.
Staff Meeting Room
For crews training and staffs discuss daily working and emergency solution.
Crew Dayroom
A small balcony specificly for crews and staffs to take a break or feed themselves while working.
Control Room
Overall control center to monitor and direct all the emergency event with wide view angle and different equipment.
Public Circulation
A circulation for public to walk around the main hall, allow them to observe how the lifeboat station works.
Reception / Lobby
Public enterance.
Toilet
Small unsecual toilet for public use.
Storage
A circulation for public to walk around the mainboat hall and observe how the station works.
First Aid
Place for simple emergency treatment of injuries and wound.

The Deglobalization Reality
Age of 'Slowbalization'

Deglobalization
The COVID-19 pandemic illustrates the danger of relying on global supply chains for essential medical supplies, while climate change demands reductions in the enormous carbon footprint of international trade. Which represents the United Kingdom now facing the challenges of producing products in a domestic context sustainably. In return, to contribute as part of the UK's new production industry, the project is proposed as a university facility to explore sustainable production with recycled plastic material.
The PlayStation 5, along with about 70% of the world's toys, is made in China - and the cost of getting supplies to the UK has gone up hugely.
Importing also has suffered during Covid, paying elevated costs and dealing with unreliable shipments.
Shipments have sometimes taken almost double that to arrive.
Containers are scarce in Asia, because of the effects of the pandemic on international supply chains, so shipping charges are now 10 times higher.

02. Split the filmsets into voxels and protect them within the exterior modular wood skeleton structure.
01. Filming at the sound stage with the filmset.
04. Arrived at Disneyland, the filmsets will be handed to the transfer apartment and sent to a specific selection sector later.
03. Then the filmsets will be loaded into the truck containers and transferred from the production sound stage to Disney Resort.
05. Filmsets are processed, selected and recomposed inside the transfer center and waiting to be dispatched.
06. Filmsets and voxels travel through the Disneyland Resort and eventually arrived at a specific site.
07. Finally, the tower crane or craw crane will lift up the filmset voxels.
08. Selecting voxels to construct functional space and storages depending on their characteristics.
