Breaking the Monotony Master’s Project | 2016

Man, with his heavy hand and selfish ambition, tramples over the land and all of its natural elements. Man has established himself as the dominant acting force when working with natural materials. Man does not work with material, but rather, forces the material to yield to his will. He decides the material will conform to a specific shape a size, and so he molds it his liking. The aim of this project is to discover the flexibility of material, specifically abandoned materials which were discarded because of their inability to meet a set of standards. Be it salvaged or reclaimed materials, recycled pieces, or scraps that would otherwise be disregarded, the design is unveiled as the materials are pieced together, exploring either their interconnectedness or incompatibility. The challenge in this, is to really analyze material, spend time with it in order to discover it’s potential without forcing it to act as something; to stare at a building piece for hours until you have listened to its story, until you’ve come to appreciate it for all that it already is. By breaking the confines and rigidity of typical Architecture, where elements meet at a perfect end or are built along centerlines, the intent is to realize the potential of materials, without having to run them through machinery to meet a typical standard.

A work or Architecture should not be experienced only for it visual aesthetics, but rather, should entice both users and viewers, to want to go forth and explore the depths of any given work. Users should feel the urge to want to explore the confines of a design, find their place in it, and be drawn to all areas of that specific realm. This pavilion allows private and public spaces to work in unison, allowing users to discover public areas among the private. The design provides a labyrinth of opportunities to engage various user types and allow for a vast range of activities within the smaller spaces of the larger whole.

With up and coming efforts to better the environment and atmosphere of Downtown Miami, it is my observation that many of the locals are being neglected. While the locals are those who predominately live and thrive in the area, many of the areas now being renovated, are failing to acknowledge the dominant presence. While design and construction are underway in the Design District for the Paseo Ponti project, I propose a connection to residential areas and existing commercial and recreational buildings. The intention here is to expand the connection of up and coming projects throughout the neighbouring areas by guiding users and locals to different areas of a given site. By connecting open and/or vacant lots to one another by joining city and residential blocks from different scales of activity, this will work towards creating a cohesive merge between all groups of people and activities.

Downtown Miami, that which is the central core for office and commercial buildings, has failed to address the issue of private traffic engineering. During peak hours of the day, the levels of traffic congestion reach tremendous levels insanity. Many commuters are still very dependent on their private vehicles, and do not use the Metro System or other means of public transit. In order to place turn the public attention to other means of travel, public transit, I propose redirecting traffic patterns. If traffic patterns into and around the city were redirected, the issue of congestion could be explored. By addressing current traffic congestion and providing a more pedestrian accessible and enticing experience, users might be compelled to go about other means to travel to and from their destinations.

The façades of the building receiving the most sunlight hours will features one of two, usually both, Sustainable Strategies. A Photovoltaic Facade system will be installed in areas receiving the harshest sunlight, to store energy for later use.

The place of nature in man’s world is questionable from generation to generation and across the various styles that we come to be familiar with in books. People look to nature for meaning and order, peace and tranquillity, and activity in the outdoors as the road to restoration and health. Nature is our natural healer and therein lie the origins to life as we know it. Nature is the master manager of complexity. Without disturbing the landscape, as it connects to the origins of the Kampong, I propose a design built into the existing conditions. As a response, users will engage in both the Architecture & the Landscape, being nestled between the two and experiencing the environment encompassing you.

Wynwood, known for it’s booming popularity and various public events and attractions, lacks a transition from the “old” to the “new.” Countless new restaurants, bar, galleries, coffee shops, and more, have planted new roots in this district. With its successes and positive influence on both the immediate and extended area, the intent of this design is to blur the boundaries between what was and what is, by extending Wynwood outwards. By addressing the corner condition and drawing users into and around the site, Wynwood will have a new direction of flow. Visitors and locals will have a transition point to stay and engage while also getting a feel of what is further ahead, thus being enticed to venture off into the depths of the district.

This semester sought to examine housing. The task at hand was to design a comprehensive project in an urban context using the findings through analysis of previously studied Infill Housing units. Upon review of spatial relationships between the vertical and horizontal planes as well as spatial the comfort of users, this project aims to break the spatial constraints of the horizontal plane by reorganizing the vertical plane through the use of various changes in programmatic levels. By transitioning users through spaces, optimizing vertical circulation potentials, a better quality of space can be provided without feeling the narrow constraints of the infill housing structure.

With today’s advances in technology, and the accessibility to information, is there still a need for the public library? This design studio was spent contemplating the afore posed question. I believe we learn, not only from books and resources, but from one another. We learn through communication in all of its form, be it verbal or visual. By maintaining visual connection throughout the entirety of the design, how can connections, between people and places, stimulate a different kind of learning? In this design, interior and exterior must connect users both visually and architecturally. While libraries serve to provide access to information, technology, books, and research, the can also work socially.

Regardless of your path, you maintain visual connection with any program immediately surrounding you, allowing you to observe the people in your vicinity, their activities, interactions, and your immediate environment. The ramp from the park is a direct connection to the core of the library. This ramp is a two way route in and about of both the park and the library. Library users can take their books to any location in the park if they choose to be outdoors. The library also features outdoor terraces overlooking the park, thus creating another boundary. The library serves various user types, ensuring that users have the option to choose their area of preference for tasks and activities.
