SENIOR GENERAL MANAGER – YAMAHA MOTOR NEW ZEALAND
Haines Hunter SP635 fitted with a Yamaha F200 in Pearlescent White.
THANKS HUGH
After an incredible 43-year career with Yamaha Motor New Zealand, industry icon Hugh Stewart is putting down his tools and stepping into retirement.
Stewart has more recently been the Technical Advisor for Yamaha Marine New Zealand but has been instrumental in the brands technical and service department and training of Yamaha dealers and apprentices for over 43 years.
Hugh's journey with Yamaha began in 1981, after completing his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic.
Reflecting on his career, Hugh says he has countless fond memories.
“Being around Yamaha and the product has always made me happy and made for an enjoyable workday,”
Over the years, Hugh has witnessed and contributed to remarkable advancements in marine technology, from the early days of two-stroke engines to today’s sophisticated four-stroke models. “In the beginning, it was all two-stroke – that’s all we had,” he recalls. “But technology has continuously evolved, and that’s what I’ve always found exciting.”
One of the most memorable milestones for Hugh was the arrival of Yamaha’s 220hp two-stroke engine, the first production model with a microcomputer engine management system. “It was the dawn of laptop technology in New Zealand, and we never experienced a single failure with that system,” he said. “That reliability and durability are what Yamaha Marine has built its reputation on, and it’s been deeply rewarding to be a part of that legacy.
Hugh's been a Yamaha man since 1981.
WATSON MATT
WATSON MATT
Part stuntman - part conservationist and self confessed ‘mad fisherman', Matt Watson captures the attention of his audience by pulling off impossible catches - unbelievably big fish from ridiculously small boats and not just boats, anything that floats is good enough - like catching a marlin from a surfboard!
“I’m absolutely fanatical about fishing, I still get excited about the thought of heading out to catch a few Snapper off the rocks as I do chasing Marlin.”
But where did this passion and enthusiasm for fishing all start? Go back 40+ years and on any given weekend a skinny shaggy-haired kid could be seen dragging his dinghy laden with fish and fishing gear up the steep hill at the Weymouth boat ramp.
“The boat trolley had a dodgy wheel that would regularly fall off, making the onemile trip from the boat ramp to home take more than an hour.”
However, this didn't deter a young Matt one bit; his passion for fishing was such that nothing would dampen his enthusiasm. As the next weekend rolled around, before the first rays of sunshine lightened the Saturday morning sky he'd be towing his dinghy back down to the sea for another adventure.
“All I’ve ever wanted to be is a fisherman. After graduating high school, I had no desire to go to university and planned to work full time as a fisherman for my uncle. But after an altercation with him (a fight over a family cricket match on Christmas Day) the door closed on my commercial fishing career.”
“Soon after that, I started a successful roofing business. Being self-employed afforded me the ability to work hard and then get away when the fishing was good.”
However, it was his passion for fishing and wanting to share that with others that inspired him to bring his fishing adventures to TV screens around the world. After some banter and lengthy discussion with a few mates, about fishing, Watson and his mates reckoned
they had just what it took to make a TV fishing show, and reckoned they could make a pretty good one.
"The Fishing Show" idea was taken to the next phase over a few beers with my good mate Kerren Packer when I blurted out the idea. Kerren had obviously had a few too many beers as well, because it was there in my shed in the winter of 2001 that we decided we'd make a fishing show.
From there we soon learn't making TV was about generating advertising revenue, high-tech gadgets, red tape and trying to convince people that didn't share our passion that our concept was a good one.”
After filming their pilot show, Matt and his small team really wanted to carry on the new look and feel of their pilot show so they invested in the gear they needed.
“We had the perfect opportunity to get some incredible footage when we headed for the Wanganella Banks on one of the most incredible sport fishing boats in the world – the Ultimate Lady.
We wanted to make a show that took viewers from the armchair and put them in the game chair. Literally hundreds of Marlin performed and we had a filming platform that allowed us to film the action from multiple angles using a combination

Matts new Stabicraft 2250 fitted with a 300hp Yamaha V6 Outboard.
of fixed, roving and underwater cameras. The footage filmed is world class and will leave even the most experienced game fisherman gob-smacked.”
Hundreds of episodes later, those early days seem just like yesterday for Watson, but he’s not at all surprised the show was a success. “I never thought the show would be as big as it was, but in saying that, I never believed that it couldn’t".
Matt’s whole approach to creating his videos, is to engage with his audience, passionately sharing his love for what he does, creating intrigue, mystery, and excitement of exploring the world’s vast oceans .
“We set out to capture all the action, not just a screaming reel, a few jumps then the fight. To do Marlin fishing justice we film Marlin chasing and eating lures, live baits, and deadbaits. We have teased Marlin to the boat and filmed the chaos sometimes with up to eight Marlin fighting over the baits we throw out. Try and say ‘game fishing is boring', once you've seen this action!”
“Marine life absolutely fascinates me. The physical build of a fish and the way it moves through the water, I find interesting, and I try wherever I can to educate people about these creatures and how everything interacts below the surface.”
Matt Watson has quickly become a household name in not only his native New Zealand, but around the world.
YOU TOO CAN BECOME A LEGEND
LegaSea is more than just an organisation; it’s a movement to save New Zealand’s oceans and Yamaha Marine New Zealand is proud to be a partner.
They are one of the few voices speaking out against the quota management system – a system that has allowed fish stocks to become depleted leaving marine environments to suffer.
LegaSea is calling for a holistic, forwardthinking approach, one that goes beyond short-term profit and prioritises the health of our oceans.
That solution is Rescue Fish – a plan to rebuild fish populations, restore balance to marine ecosystems, and
secure a future where our children can experience the abundance of the sea.
But that's not all they're doing… LegaSea’s FishCare programme allows recreational fishers to become guardians of the ocean, arming them with knowledge and best practices to fish responsibly.
FishCare educates people on everything from reducing bycatch to releasing fish safely, helping every angler do their part in creating a healthier marine environment.
When you support LegaSea, you’re joining a community that’s committed to leaving a legacy of thriving oceans and sustainable fishing.
Together, we’re fighting for a future where our oceans are teeming with life and where every New Zealander can experience the joy of a healthy, vibrant sea. Become a legend.
Stand with LegaSea.
FILLETING FISH TO FEED WHĀNAU
The Kai Ika Project is an innovative partnership between the Outboard Boating Club of Auckland, the Papatuanuku Kokiri Marae, LegaSea, and the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council.
Established in 2016, the project’s mission is simple; re-purpose fish heads, frames, and offcuts that would otherwise go to waste and redistribute them to communities in need. Since its inception, the Kai Ika Project has redistributed hundreds of tonnes of fish parts,
transforming what was once considered waste into kai for local families.
These previously discarded fish parts, rich in nutrients and flavour, are cherished by communities across South Auckland.
In 2022, the project expanded, opening a satellite hub in Wellington, where kai is shared with Porirua, Strathmore, and Naenae communities. This year the Kai Ika Project opens in Hawkes Bay, another region that will benefit hugely from the access to free kai.
With a staggering 425,000kg of fish parts re-purposed, over 8,236 volunteer hours, and 3,830 pickups to date, the Kai Ika Project continues to grow.
By giving respect to each fish and sharing its bounty, we minimise waste and promote a deeper appreciation for marine resources.
At its heart, the Kai Ika Project is about feeding people, connecting communities, and fostering a more sustainable relationship with our oceans.

MATT WATSON HELM MASTER® EX A ‘MUST HAVE’
RENOWNED FISHERMAN AND FISHING SHOW HOST, MATT WATSON IS ONE OF YAMAHA’S OUTDOOR AMBASSADOR’S, SHOWCASING OUR PRODUCT RANGE ON HIS BOATS.
Aboard his Stabicraft 2250 Ultra Centre Cab, sits a single Yamaha V6 300hp outboard, with a full assortment of Helm Master® EX functionality.
“I use Helm Master® EX all the time, it’s that good I just can’t go back and not have it, it’s that good,” says Matt.
Helm Master® EX boasts enhanced joystick manoeuvrability, single-function buttons and features such as DriftPoint® Track. Yamaha Autopilot can be adjusted with the joystick and includes functions such as course and heading hold, Track Point® (navigation along waypoints), and two types of pattern steer that seamlessly integrate with Speed Control and Pattern Shift.
Joystick adjustability provides increased comfort, control and convenience which allows for fine tuning of Yamaha Autopilot and SetPoint® features without leaving your current mode, creating additional ease of use and capability.
Fast, responsive Digital Electric Steering (DES) means Helm Master® EX provides precise control with an uncluttered bilge. DES can now be added onto any current and most previous Digital Electronic Control (DEC) – capable Yamaha outboard models.
Helm Masters Digital Electric Steering (DES) remote control has also been redesigned for ergonomic comfort and ease of use. All functions previously on the Helm Master® EX control now come
standard on all Helm Master® EX system configurations.
Helm Master® EX (or its properly configured component systems) can be installed by the boat builder at the factory or by dealers when repowering customer boats at the dealership. This allows boaters flexibility in tailoring their Helm Master® EX system to their specific desires.
“Part of Helm Master® EX is that you have all of the electric steering built into the outboard, so there's no third party steering componentry to worry about. I find myself using the autopilot feature either when trolling, or steaming from point A to point B, it just works perfectly every time.
In particular with FishPoint®, (which I use all the time), now I’ve had it, I can’t go back, it's a must have on all of my boats from now on.
FishPoint® allows me to position over a set mark, and hold there. You might even say that its better than having an extra Helmsman on the boat, keeping the boat on the spot while you fish.”
Helm Master® EX is available across all current Yamaha Digital Electronic Control (DEC) outboards from F150 to XF450 and can be installed in single, double, triple and quad outboard applications.

NEW XF450
YAMAHA HAS ADDED TO ITS LINE-UP OF HIGH POWER XTO OFFSHORE MODELS WITH THE NEW 450 HORSEPOWER MODEL TO COMPLEMENT THE EXISTING XTO 425.
The new XTO Offshore features the same 5.6 litre, direct injected V8 engine and the long list of features as the original XTO 425. This exceptional engine delivers big torque and thrust to push big offshore boats. Along with an additional 25 horsepower the new XF450 delivers new features to enhance one of the most ground-breaking offshore engines ever built.
More Charging Power
To help meet the extreme electrical demands of today’s larger boats,
the Yamaha Offshore XF450 features a three-phase, simultaneous charging system that delivers an incredible amount of net amps at lower rpm, for when it’s needed most.
Using Phase Angle Control (PAC) componentry and a super-strong magnetic field, XF450 models produce up to 96 net amps per engine in neutral. That’s plenty of power to meet today’s popular, high demand devices like gyro stabilizers, air conditioning, sound systems and more.
The XF450 is equipped with Yamaha’s exclusive TotalTilt® feature for faster, easier engine tilting. When enabled, it allows complete tilt up from any position with a simple double push of the “UP” trim/tilt button, or full tilt down (until trim ram contact) by the same double push of the “DOWN” trim/tilt button.
A warning horn will sound just before and during these operations. Movement and the horn can be stopped anywhere in between by pressing the tilt button again.

New Propellers
Yamaha has also released two new XTO prop options. The XTO EC® prop which has been specifically designed to reduce ventilation that can occur when pushing big heavy boats, due to the extreme thrust produced by the new XF450.
For lighter vessels, a new 27-inch pitch prop is also available, providing increased RPM at wide open throttle for more top end speed.

JET FISHING
WITH IN JOON AND GENE
Acompact performance orientated platform with all of the features and functionality built in for the perfect day of fishing on the water. You can now take your fishing game to the next level with the Yamaha JetFish.
The Jetfish, is the first ever factoryfitted WaveRunner made for anglers – ready to hit the water straight off the showroom floor.
Whilst the origins of this compact fishing platform saw users customising the craft with various fishing accessories such as fish finders, transducers, rod holders, and fish bins – Yamaha has gone next level with the all new Yamaha JetFish.
The new JetFish allows you to conveniently enjoy the unique capabilities of WaveRunner fishing including easy single operator launching and retrieval, speed to your fishing spot, easy manoeuvrability, and shallow water access, along with the traditional excitement that comes with riding Yamaha’s legendary FX HO WaveRunner.
A Yamaha JetFish gives you opportunities for a quick fishing mission without the admin of dealing with a larger vessel
for an hour or two on the water.
That’s where our Jet Fish WaveRunner really comes into its own as launching is a breeze and washing down at the end of a trip takes no time at all.
The 2025 Yamaha JetFish can handle you and a mate (up to 240kg in total), has a dry weight of 375kg, and an overall length of around 3.5m. Towing is a breeze for practically any vehicle equipped with a tow bar. The JetFish is stable at rest and built-in footwell drains quickly get rid of any unwanted water – especially in winter. There’s an automatic bilge pump too if it’s ever needed.
Electronics
The factory-fitted 9-inch Garmin 65CV is a great unit and lives up to the high quality we come to expect from
Garmin products. It’s well positioned and an essential tool for finding fish and a successful day on the water. The central brain delivers the functionality through an intuitive, fully featured 7-inch touchscreen.
Other controls include an automatic trim function, top speed and acceleration settings, and plenty more meaning you’ve the latest tech on board to enjoy your day on the water! There’s also a handy pin function to lock the ski to prevent any unauthorised use.
Storage
With 167 litres of storage, there’s heaps of room for all your gear. The glove box has 16.5 litres of useable storage and a dedicated mobile holder with USB charging port.
Jet Fishing has become super popular in New Zealand with hundreds of personal watercraft hitting the water every week.
Gene trying his luck aboard his Yamaha Jetfish FX HO.
The blue LED light is great in low light. There’s 130 litres of bow storage and 8 litres under the seats with a further 11 litres of sealed waterproof storage in the stern. There’s masses of storage –even for an angler that is fully geared up. This configuration means you can keep anything you’re using regularly ready for quick and convenient access.
The Ride
An integrated single start/stop button gets you underway or powers the engine off which is about as simple as it gets. The steering column is easily adjustable and can be moved up or down to suit the rider’s stature or riding styles and there’s several ride modes including customisable speed settings for learner riders.
Functionality like this enables you to be more focused on fishing. The no wake mode settings cap the engine RPMs at
an optimum idle speed in no-wake zones and other restricted areas.
The bow angle trim can be adjusted for optimal handling and performance and means you can fine-tune the ride for maximum comfort when carrying multiple passengers, towing, or in changing conditions.
The cruise assist control means you can set a consistent engine speed which improves both comfort and fuel efficiency on longer trips. The dual throttle handlebar control system provides total precision when manoeuvering. Pull the right lever to accelerate and the left lever to scrub that speed off or reverse.
In Joon Park – JetFish Ambassador
You’ve heard what we’ve said about our JetFish, but what does Yamaha Ambassador and JetFish user
In Joon Park have to say about it?
“I’ve had my JetFish for about a year. It’s awesome to use for in close soft baiting, as well as jigging for Kingies offshore. Even before you hit the water, it’s stress-free towing to and from the ramp, easy single-operator launch and retrieval, and hassle-free cleanup make fishing trips with the JetFish easy.
What I love is that, it’s got a huge 70 litre fuel tank, so for instance I can go from Omaha to Great Barrier Island, no problem. You can even carry more fuel on the back if you want to go even further. Having waterproof storage in the cockpit for your valuables is really important. Its even got a secure place for your phone and charging capability.
The craft is really stable with plenty of room. What I really like is that you can close into the rocks, cast your baits into where you know the fish are likely to be. I absolutely love my Jetfish".

NEW RELEASES
READY FOR BLAST OFF? YAMAHA IS EXCITED TO LAUNCH TWO NEW MODELS. THE 2025 JETFISH AND BRAND NEW JETBLASTER.
Inspired by the agility and mobility of Yamaha’s legendary SuperJet, the new JetBlaster combines the freedom of a stand-up with the versatility of a sit-down personal watercraft.
The key to its unique performance and innovative design is the custom-tuned electric trim, built-in footwell chocks and raised action handlebars.
The electric trim gives the rider the ability to pop out of the water, do spins and other exciting manoeuvres, while the built-in footwell chocks, located towards the rear of the craft, allow the rider to adjust their riding position when freestyle riding. The wide mounted, high action handlebars, provide increased leverage over the craft, allowing the rider the ability to quickly change direction.
For those who want to go fishing, and want to get there fast, the new JetFish is tailor-made for anglers.
We’ve combined exclusive factory designed JetFish ‘fishing’ accessories with the extremely popular FX HO to deliver a complete 'turnkey' fishing package.
The new JetFish allows you to enjoy the unique capabilities of WaveRunner fishing including easy single operator launching and retrieval, speed to your fishing location, easy manoeuvrability, and shallow water access, along with the traditional excitement that comes with riding Yamaha’s legendary FX HO WaveRunner.

GAME CHANGER
Earlier this year, Yamaha took the covers off the world’s first hydrogen-powered outboard for recreational boats along with a prototype fuel system integrated into a vessel that the company plans to further refine for testing.
The effort is part of Yamaha’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality: deploying multiple technology solutions.
Yamaha joined forces with Roush to develop the fuel system to power the new outboard and collaborated with long-time boat builder partner Regulator Marine to build a boat suitable for testing the prototype outboard.
By working with Roush on the fuel system, Yamaha gains the benefit of more than two decades of hydrogen systems integration and research.
Regulator Marine built a hull based on the 26XO and modified it to accommodate hydrogen tanks necessary to power the new outboard.
Together, Yamaha, Regulator and Roush displayed the boat hull, fuel system and outboard to demonstrate how hydrogen could work as a possible fuel source in a marine environment.
The effort allows engineers to begin the process of determining marine standards for the use of hydrogen in vessels.
“Yamaha is exploring all possibilities to achieve carbon neutrality, and have made commitments for our operations to be carbon neutral by 2035 and our products to become carbon neutral by 2050.
Ben Speciale, President, Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit says "We believe hydrogen is a viable method of achieving these goals.
Yamaha wants to be a leader in this space, and we encourage others in the marine industry to become involved as we look for ways to build infrastructure and new policy around innovations.”

ENGINE FLUSHING
WITH YAMAHA EXPERT HUGH STEWART
SILENT FLUSHING
Flushing a Yamaha outboard is a crucial part of your ongoing motor maintenance. After each trip it’s important to flush the motor with fresh water for approx. 10mins using the silent flush.
When flushing, have the motor tilted up at a 40–45° angle. By tilting the engine you create a back pressure which holds the water in the cooling system for longer, forcing the water to work its way through the internals of the engine. Only use the silent flush as this drives the water from the very top of the motor down and provides the best cleaning of your motor.
Start by tilting your outboard on a 40–45˚ angle.
ENGINE CARE
When flushing, rotate the steering until the tell tale is at its lowest point towards the ground. E.g. if the tell tale water is on the starboard side, turn the motor to that side. The purpose of tilting the motor is to create pressure with the water inside the motor. By tilting the motor it slows the flow of the water through the engine.
Ensure when you’re flushing the motor that you have the hose pressure on full. Do not use traditional flush muffs as a standard garden hose cannot provide sufficient water pressure, and will not fill the engine block.
Rotate your outboard onto the tell tale side.
After flushing, wash the cowling using Yamaclean Cleaning Wax. Available from your local Yamaha dealer, it's high-sudsing, providing superior cleaning and rinsing properties, minimises streaking and spotting to leave a super bright, clear shine.
Simply connect your garden hose to silent flush.
WHY HUGH SAYS SILENT FLUSH IS BEST
1. It’s silent so you won't annoy the neighbours!
2. It flushes internal water ways, and both sides including the thermostat.
3. Experience has shown the engines using silent flush are significantly cleaner than engines using a flush head (muffs).
HUGH'S TOP TIPS
Don't use the safety latch when flushing or trailering. This latch is designed as a safety device for technicians only.
When attaching the silent flush to the motor, don’t ring its neck. It should be on firm, not overtightened as it will squash the washer.
Ensure that you always use the Yamaha engine rubber stop when trailering.
Hugh recommends using a Yamaha silent flush attachment. It has the correct thread which marries up to the actual flush fitting on the engine and is designed to fit your standard Nylex Coupler.
The idea is to have the motor tilted so the water inside the propeller is creating back pressure which will assist with taking the water and holding it in the cooling system for longer. If the motor is down you still get some back pressure however, it won’t be as efficient as having it tilted.
