The teaching strategies that are most effective in face-to-face contexts are not necessarily the most effective in distance-learning contexts. In fact, the variation in teaching strategies is lost in distance-learning contexts. In a study of online instructors, I found that they tended to teach using only one or two styles of instruction and rarely changed their styles over time. Teachers need to be aware that their teaching style might not be appropriate for all students and may need to make adjustments based on individual student needs.
