Programme, following failure by a service provider to deliver food to schools.

The MEC was accompanied by KwaDukuza Council Speaker Cllr Dolly Govender and Mr Zibusiso Dlamini (HOD for the KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development). The delegation visited Stanger High, Stanger Secondary, Stanger ML Sultan and Stanger Primary schools.

The Hill Crescent shame

Residents of Oceanview in Ward 16 have once again raised serious concerns about the state of Hill Crescent, which has been left unattended for a long time. Residents are appealing to Ward 16 Councillor Sanele Mthiyane and KwaDukuza Mayor Lindile Nhaca to sort out the road.

A heartfelt thanks goes out to all of our wonderful customers. Our grand opening was a huge success and we couldn't have done it without you!

We are truly humbled and appreciative to everyone who supported us in this endeavor.

We are overwhelmed with the love and understanding given to us, even with a shaky start.

We hope to continue building and improving with the support of all our wonderful customers.

To all the stunning entrepreneurs who set up stalls, we thank you for your support and hype in making this event a success. We look forward to many more events with you. May Allah grant blessings and success to every one of us

Cabinet has called on South Africans to use electricity

sparingly as part of the Demand Side Management (DSM) initiatives.

This as Cabinet called on the nation to lower electricity usage, especially during periods of high energy consumption, typically from 5pm to 9pm, as part of Demand Side Management initiatives.

“By lowering our consumption we can create a win-win situation that both reduces pressure on the power grid and saves households money without affecting business productivity or quality of life,” said Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.

The Minister was addressing a post-Cabinet media briefing in Pretoria.

“Cabinet calls on everyone to assist in saving electricity by using it sparingly while Eskom works with Independent Power Producers to bring new capacity online.”

Demand Side Management measures are a global phenomenon and have proved effective in reducing peak demand and promoting energy conservation.

“We have demonstrated this during the 2010 World Cup. The aim is that collectively we must save electricity by switching off non-essential appliances, using gas to cook, installing energy efficient light bulbs and switching off appliances like geysers when not in

use,” Ntshavheni said.

According to Ntshavheni, the target is to save about 1000 MW of power which is equivalent to one stage of load shedding.

“Cabinet notes that a number of large customers are already participating in the Eskom's Demand Side initiatives, and calls on all stakeholders from business, industry and residential customers to heed the call and join the Demand Side Management campaign.”

On Tuesday, Eskom said it will be ramping up its Demand Side Management initiatives in order to better manage the supply and demand of electricity.

Reduce pressure

The power utility held its first national Demand Side Management Indaba in Gauteng this week.

During the Indaba, the power utility's board chairperson, Mpho Makwana, said the DSM initiatives assist the power utility to reduce pressure on the system during peak hours. It also gives consumers the opportunity to save on electricity bills.

“The effective implementation of the DSM programmes could create a win-win situation reducing pressure on the power system and

enabling consumers to realise cost savings by being more energy conscious and reducing their consumption without affecting business productivity or quality of

life,” he said. Demand side management is seen as a tool that can help the power utility to potentially reduce load shedding.

SA observes Anti-Tobacco Campaign Month

4KM FUN WALK

South Africa is this month (May) commemorating AntiTobacco Campaign Month. Although most of us are aware of the health dangers associated with smoking, millions of South Africans still light up. This is unfortunate because smoking puts you at risk of developing illnesses such as lung cancer, chronic lung diseases and heart disease.

Research shows that cigarettes will kill half of those who smoke.

Tobacco contains nicotine, a highly addictive drug that you start to crave when you are without it. This is what makes it so difficult to give up. Your body and brain soon starts to need nicotine in order to feel good, resulting in addiction.

The KZN Department of Education has announced the cancellation of the tender to supply food to more 5000 schools ion KwaZulu-Natal.

This follows an outcry over nondelivery of food to many schools, resulting in learners going hungry. The Department days it has reengaged the existing suppliers who have the mandate to procure and supply food to cluster schools.

Early last week, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal had instructed the KZN Department of Education to immediately cancel the new, problemprone contract to supply food to the province's schools. The party revealed this when it briefed the media on Thursday last week, where it vowed that by yesterday (Tuesday), all schools in the province should have adequate food to maintain the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP).

Speaking at the media briefing, ANC Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo said there has been a collective acknowledgment of the serious problems facing the programme, since the start of the 2nd term of schooling. Mtolo added that the ruling party, after reviewing various submissions and relevant facts, has come to a conclusion that there “are serious breaches resulting in the nullity of the NSNP contract”, and has consequently directed DoE to take immediate remedial action which

result in all schools in the province receiving an adequate supply of food.

“We are firm in our position that the more than R2.1 billion allocated for NSNP must be used to drive entrepreneurship revolution and stimulate local economic development. Therefore a more district or local wide food distribution model be explored as a matter of urgency to ensure that all learners in schools are supplied with food.

“We have received reports of SMMEs that are forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to collect food for schools. Some have to hire trailers and bakkies. This has become a burden given rising fuel prices. To cater for these SMMEs the Provincial Government must urgently enter into a memorandum of understanding with Ithala where it will guarantee the support of these SMMEs so that they do not struggle with cash flow challenges.

“This will also give Ithala the best opportunity to prove itself as the institution of economic transformation for ordinary entrepreneurs in our society.

“The ANC is directing its government to make sure that by Tuesday 2nd May 2023 every school in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal has enough food for the whole month of May 2023. Provincial Treasury must come closer to the Supply Chain Management processes as the custodian of the Public Finance Management Act. “All contracts associated with NSNP should pass the scrupulous test of value for money through a fair and transparent competitive process, Mtolo stated.

The flat has 4 aircons which can be purchased by the tenant, if necessary.

Also available for sale in the flat are the ffg:Dishwasher, Washing machine, Tumble Dryer, large gas stove and 2 large king size beds.

Contact : Renuca Janak of Attorneys Laurie C Smith Inc. 032 551 8160

The party also dwelled on the need for government contracts to benefit emerging entrepreneurs in the Districts where they are located.

“Our position as the ANC in KZN is that the provincial budget across all government departments must be used to create more jobs and stimulate entrepreneurship at local level. This will ensure the redistribution of wealth and social stability.

“We are therefore directing the ANC government in this province to ensure the removal of the red tape in public procurement for the benefit of small players,” Mtolo said.

Opposition parties slam postponement of Council workshop

A last minute cancellation of a planned Council workshop by KwaDukuza Municipality has attracted heavy criticism from opposition parties, who have since accused the ruling ANC of “impeding service delivery”.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal held a successful provincial elective congress at the weekend. Francois Rodgers retained his position as provincial leader, with Sithembiso Ngema coming in as deputy provincial leader, while Dean McPherson was re-elected as Provincial Chairperson. Presidential Summit to focus on health systems

Government will this week convene the second Presidential Health Summit to conduct a review of the implementation of the interventions agreed to during the 2018 summit and assess the performance of the health system against the Presidential Health Compact.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the government delegation to the two-day summit, which will be held in Boksburg from 04 to 05 May 2023.

The Department of Health said the summit will bring together key stakeholders from various constituencies within the health sector to identify alternative and sustainable interventions to ensure that measures are in place to implement the mechanisms that have not yet been implemented to recover towards the targets not yet attained.

“The summit will also serve as a platform for government to assess the readiness of the health system to implement the National Health Insurance (NHI) and identify urgent measures needed to recalibrate the system and accelerate the NHI reforms, and synthesize international experiences and shape approaches for moving closer to building health systems resilience in the South African context,” the department said in a statement.

President Ramaphosa launched the country's Presidential Health Compact in 2019. It lays down a five-year roadmap for health systems strengthening reforms under the 'nine pillars' towards accelerating Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in South Africa.

The Presidential Health Compact originated from months of extensive consultative deliberations between key stakeholders following the Presidential Health Summit in October 2018.

The stakeholders included government, health and allied health professionals, labour, the business community, academics and researchers, statutory bodies, traditional health practitioners and public health entities. WHO provided essential technical advice and support in development of the Presidential Health Compact.

The premise was that the health system cannot be fixed by the Health Department alone, but requires a focused, holistic and collaborative approach

The compact, signed by the President, Health Minister and representatives from various stakeholder groups, outlines the roles of all key stakeholder groups in implementation of critical tasks related to UHC and NHI in South Africa.

These include updating the quality improvement plans, development of Human Resources for Health (HRH) operational plan, improving public finance management, access to essential medicines, upgrading infrastructure, and use of information technology through public private partnerships for upscaling initiatives aimed at strengthening health systems

The Presidential Health Compact will be instrumental in accelerating progress towards UHC over next five years.

Dr Brian Chirombo, who was then Acting World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative to South Africa, said the implementation of the compact is expected to contribute significantly towards improving the healthcare system in the country leading to many more South Africans having access to quality health services.

“We believe that it is the path to South Africa's acceleration towards Universal Health Coverage, which will ensure that the country contributes to Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 3 on Health, aimed at ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages,” Chirombo said at the time.

“KwaDukuza Council was due to sit at 9am this morning for a workshop followed by a special council meeting. Such would have seen the long over-due Lekgotla resolution that were drafted in early 2021, fine tuning and approved for implementation. Such resolutions would have greatly added to the functionality of the municipality and the delivery

of adequate services. ActionSA councillors along with other opposition councillors gathered at the KwaDukuza Town Hall at 8.30am only to be informed by the Whip of Council, Cllr Mbatha, that the scheduled workshop and special council meeting has been postponed until further notice due to scheduling conflicts with Mayoral Imbizos and a visit by an MEC,” stated Cllr Zungu.

More pain for consumers as inflation rises

Inflation in South Africa rose to 7.1% in March, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) revealed on Wednesday last week. This means South Africans will pay more for goods, especially food and non-alcoholic beverages.

According to the latest data, headline consumer inflation edged higher to 7.1% in March from 7% in February and 6.9% in January.

The monthly change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 1% in March, the most significant monthly rise since July 2022 when it was 1.5%. “Food and non-alcoholic beverages and transport were the main drivers behind the annual and monthly increases,” the national statistics agency said.

Stats SA said inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages continued to accelerate, with prices increasing by 14% in the 12 months to March.

In March, milk, eggs, cheese, sugar, sweets and desserts, fruit and vegetables, and “other food products” experienced upward inflationary pressure. The milk, eggs and cheese product group witnessed its annual rate reaching 13.6% from the recent low of 3.7% in April 2022.

The annual increase for bread and cereals was 20.3% in March, down from 20.5% in February. On the other hand, meat inflation edged lower to 10.6% from 11.4% in February.

The prices of oils and fats decreased

for the seventh successive month, dragging the annual rate to 16% from 16.7%.

The transport index, according to Stats SA, rose by 8.9% in the 12 months to March, down from the 9.9% annual rate recorded in February.

The downward shift was led by eight consecutive months of slowing fuel inflation, which reached 8.1% in March from 10.9% in February.

“This is much lower than the 56.2% peak in July 2022,” the agency said. However, fuel prices rose by 4.5% between February and March due to the price of inland 95-octane petrol rising by R1.27 per litre.

New excise taxes for alcohol and tobacco products came into effect in March, contributing to a monthly increase of 2.2%.

Data for the first quarter survey of housing rentals are also included in the CPI for March.

Annual inflation for actual rentals was unchanged from December at 2.5%, while owner-occupied housing was 2.7% compared with December's reading of 2,8%.

In March, inflation for household contents and services increased to 6.9% from 6.2% in February, which is the highest annual increase since June 2009.

Prices for appliances, tableware and equipment have also gone up by 7.7%.

Sundowns cruise into CAF Champions League semi-finals

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their spot in the CAF Champions League semi-finals after beating Algerian outfit CR Belouizdad 2-1 in Pretoria on Saturday. The victory was enough for the PSL champions to seal a 6-2 aggregate victory, having won the firstleg 4-1 away from home last weekend.

In Saturday's second-leg at Loftus Versfeld, Sundowns fell behind to a Sofiane Bouchar goal in the 24th minute, but responded with goals from Themba Zwane (45th minute) and Thapelo Morena (49th minute). Zwane's goal on the stroke of half-time,

and Morena's shortly after the break, knocked the stuffing out of the Algerians as 'Downs cruised into the last four of the continental show-piece. In the semi-finals, Sundowns will face defending champions Wydad Casablanca, who scraped into the lastfour with a 4-3 victory on penalties over Tanzania's Simba on Friday night. Sundowns have won the CAF Champions League once before in their history, when they beat Egyptian side Zamalek 3-1 in a two-legged final in 2016.
