of Karamazov here with my feet submerged in the cool blue waters. How tantalizing. The earthly colours of the room itself blends nicely with the concept of a natural Balinese approach. The Lagoon Access Rooms are one of the few privileged categories (The others being The Garden Club Chalet, Premier Club Chalet, 1-BR Balcony Suite, 2-BR Balcony Suite, Deluxe Suite and Presidential Suite) that entitles it’s guests access to the Garden Club Lounge.

Families bringing children may also find relief in Wolly Kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club & Games Centre. The little ones aged from 2-9 can find their own play mates in the Kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club, whereas pre-teens and teenagers have the Games Centre to keep them busy. As I was scribbling my notes of the brand new Barong Lagoon Pool, I had to constantly wipe the sweat from the tip of my brows.

The several desired club benefits include a private check-in, breakfast at the garden club, a sweet array of delights in their afternoon tea session, evening cocktails (from 05.00 pm - 07.00 pm); all these complete with internet and library facilities. Upon stepping into the garden club lounge, it’s as if you’re stepping into another realm, a whole new unseen part of Padma. Perhaps it is the sense of entitlement or maybe it’s just the heavily beguiling sweet savories calling out to my hunger pangs. If you are bringing your loved one on a honeymoon, it really is time to surprise him or her with the Premier Club Chalet. With this posh, nativeinspired and cocooned, suite, you might as well keep yourself shut from the outside world. Hues reflecting the bright and warm colours of the earth compliment the room’s whole outlook. The view is vividly green as the suite overlooks the garden right outside the terrace or balcony. For families, there is the Family Garden Club, a combination of a king-sized bedroom and another room with twin single beds. The Family Garden Club is essentially two Garden Club Chalets meshed into one. It took me about 45 minutes to wander around the whole perimeter, noting it’s numerous not to mention elegantly styled facilities; the most noteworthy being it’s brand new lagoon. Another facility I’d love to mention about Padma, is that each room is fully equipped with a complimentary wi-fi connection; an increasingly rare commodity in big hotels like Padma Resort. I was first led into the fitness room, a nice break from the melting sun. Yoga classes are usually conducted here in the fitness room. In the same compartment, lies the sauna facility as well as the departure lounge. Guests checking out way ahead of their flight departure schedule, can either enjoy

a laid-back session in the wi-fi equipped room, or revel in some sweet delights down at The Deli. Within close proximity of the sauna and fitness centre, there are tennis courts to keep you up and about on your feet. It was finally time to visit the Padma Spa by Mandara. This treatment facility overlooks a tranquil pond. Again, the Balinese décor compliments the au courant symmetry here. Even before entering the compound, I could easily sniff the aroma of spices and pure essential oils a good ten feet away. Padma too has it’s own meeting room, with a capacity of 700 theatre style seats, and 300 banquetstyle seats. If you are more of an aesthetic kind of person, you may try the cooking lessons held Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Families bringing children may also find relief in Wolly Kid’s Club & Games Centre. The little ones aged from 2-9 can find their own play mates in the Kid’s Club, whereas pre-teens and teenagers have the Games Centre to keep them busy. It was hot, humid and I couldn’t be any more tempted to take a dip in the 1.45 metre deep lagoon. I guess evidently, the newly-launched lagoon provides a platform for the resort to lure families, honeymooners and tightknit group of friends to spend some quality time under the tropical sun. The 1.45 metre deep lagoon pool comes with it’s very own pool bar and cafe to perhaps rejuvenate yourself after a long day under the heat. There is also the Olympic-sized Infinity Pool. I watched as families challenge each other in an enthralling game of volleyball, under the sweltering heat.

Over the years, Padma has experienced thorough changes. From an aerial view, you’ll never guess that this resort has been standing for over twenty years.

Food lovers will find joy in the Tenkai Japanese Restaurant, the Taman Ayun Café & Lounge, The Bella Rosa Italian Restaurant, The Deli, or if you prefer a more laid back, tropical atmosphere, there is the Sunset Bar, the Barong Lagoon Pool & Bar and finally the Seruni Sunken Pool Bar. The Taman Ayun Café & Lounge sees a variety of continental food concept amalgamated with Balinese recipes to create nothing less than perfect of a presentation. The Salmon Steak Betutu for one and if you’re into western, there are things like BBQ Steak Wrap or even everyone’s favourite; Fish and Chips. The Bella Rosa is an Italian dining entity, with an outdoor and indoor area for diners seeking an intimate escape. Their rooftop tables are located beside the bar. Bella Rosa was actually awarded Best Restaurant of 2009 by Indonesia Tatler. Meanwhile, The Sunset Bar is open from 05.00 pm til 11.00 pm, serving you cocktails and tapas with the laid back sounds of lounge music. From here, you can sip on a glass of martini, and catch a theatrical sundown on the beach. There’s plenty to do here in Padma. And if you ever feel the need for more, there are even more things to add to your itinerary outside Padma. There is the eminent Ku De Ta Restaurant, The Khaima, and the bustling shopping districts of Legian and Kuta. Over the years, Padma has experienced thorough changes. From an aerial view, you’ll never guess that this resort has been standing for over twenty years. With the insurgence of competitions, Padma has had to scour itself, and enhance it’s concept to gallantly distinguish itself from it’s competitions. One thing I’m glad though, is that it has mostly stayed true to it’s original concept of a Balinese retreat.

Unrivalled Experience

The newly-launched Seminyak Beach and Spa has only been here for a while but you better get used to it, because my gut feeling tells me this lush accommodation is going to be around for a long, long time. Strategically located near the trending hotspots of Seminyak, this retreat enables it’s guests to also get up close with the beauty of nature with a much-coveted beachfront location. Stepping into the resort, I’ve discerned the main colours to be royal gold and bistre. Posh and elegant to say the least. As expected, I was greeted in the lobby with the much celebrated Balinese hospitality. Essentially, Seminyak Beach Resort and Spa is graced with six categories; The Room (Garden or Beach Wing), The Suite, The Villa 1-Bedroom Garden or Ocean View, The Villa 2-Bedroom Garden View, and finally, The Penthouse. I was first ushered through a spacious garden, and up the elevator to view the Room category, where I found the decorations to be royally decorated. The theme is to bring a right mix of native artistry, embroidered into this accommodation. I could kind of decipher where they’re headed through the hardwood floors and the intricate engravings in the room. Staying in this category, one would be able to benefit from the lot of greeneries right outside the patio. It to has it’s own enigmatically designed bathroom, with a full glass and a blinds in case you need to pull it down, separating it from the bedroom. Oh before I forget, the towels

placed firmly on the linen, are shaped in the form of animals. Yes, this just goes to show how the Balinese are taking their form of art onto the next level. The animal present in the room I visited, is apparently a swan; a symbol of beauty and grace. The Suite Category is more spacious, but has the same dominant, hardwood, native Balinese theme au fait with contemporary designs. A plasma screen tv lies opposite the crispy linen material that makes the king-sized bed. The balcony of The Suite overlooks a violently blue, ravishing waters of Seminyak Beach. Let me correct myself, there are actually two plasma screen tvs in the suite, one of them sprawled on the wall of the lounge area. The Villa 2 Bedroom category, fundamentally has two heavenly suites for you and a life-sized pool. My favourite part about this category is it’s unseemingly bold concept of a floating sundeck. Yes, it’s sundeck is literally submerged in 3 inches deep of water. Let your feet down and you’ll be sure to touch the cool, tranquil waters.

The room has a sliding door that gives straight access to the floating sundeck on the private pool. Amazingly designed, it’s as if the creator wants guests to instantly feel like jumping out of bed, and into the pool. Wouldn’t it be great if this was all we should be doing each morning? The bathroom has it’s own unique greenhouses, two actually, on either side of the bathtub.

Another thing I failed to mention, is that almost all the surfaces of bath tubs in The Seminyak Beach Resort and Spa, is enamoured with exotic gemstones that supposedly emits a good aura upon laying down on it. There are two entrances to the bathroom, one supposedly for the male and one for the female. Undoubtedly a very interesting concept. The dining area of the Villa, is semi-outdoor with blinds to shut yourself from the heavy wind if there is any in this beautiful weather, or rain that sporadically hits Bali. So yes, we got over how cool the suites and rooms seem to be. But “what else is there to do?” You might ask. A great deal of activity surrounds this resort. There’s actually an infinity pool (one of my personal favourite concept of a swimming pool) to be enjoyed publicly by guests. The celestially designed pool is set accosting the Seminyak Beach. It creates an Illusion that somehow initiates the continuation between the two waters. For relaxation purposes, there is also the Khayangan Spa, where you can relieve yourself from your obligations through health and beauty rituals. The therapies use only naturally sourced ingredients and have been adapted to rejuvenate your whole body and mind. For one, there is the Luminuous Radiance FacialAnti-Aging by Pevonia Botanica. A journey that will revitalize your skin with Vitamin C Complex, a unique micro emulsified gel to render your skin bright and moist.

There is actually a poolside bar to accompany your day at the Infinity Pool. It was really hard not to imagine myself sitting there with a glass of lime mojito gawking at all the beautiful things in life. The Sanje Sunset Lounge brings you a wide selection of refreshing cocktails, mocktails and popular brands of beer. At the Santan Restaurant, you’ll enjoy a variety of international cuisines with a view of the ocean. There is also a romantic dinner at the restaurant, that will see you disjoined from the rest of the guests in a radiant glowing venue that will leave more than just a memory. The Seminyak ideally also has a chapel standing right in the heart of the resort. The Purnama Chapel, meaning “Full Moon” in Indonesian, has an altar that sees nothing more than the blue waters, it really is the perfect spot to hold an intimately private celebration. It doesn’t even have to be a wedding. The elegantly built pavilion is actually a multi-purpose venue, where one can paint the night with a formal dinner or a cocktail session. I definitely see this chapel making it’s imminent rise in the future. There is also the Banjar (function room) to hold meetings and group events for up to 50 participants. The indoor area is fully soundproof to set up for a highly exclusive event. Other facilities within The Seminyak Beach includes a fitness room, a boutique and rental of sporting equipments.

There are also golf courses nearby if you are into that. Even when it finds itself surrounded with the life of the Party that is Seminyak, this resort really designs itself to let guests have a fairytale Balinese stay. Through little intricate details, and the green luscious environment, The Seminyak portrays a Bali in the light of luxury.

BONEKA: MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME. Every time I come back to St. Regis, I literally feel as if I’m coming home. God only knows how many times I’ve come to spoil myself with Boneka’s semi-buffet dinner, not to mention it’s critically acclaimed Sunday Brunch. The welcoming smiles I see every time the door swings open, along with the Balinese traditional puppets keep me coming back for more. The St. Regis’s Bali Resort often prides itself in Boneka, being a top-notch eatery in the exotic island of Bali. There are two areas we can choose to dine in Boneka; outdoor or indoor. From Boneka, you’ll have a spectacular view of the sunrise sitting from uniquely laid out, snugly rockers. Works better than an early-morning caffeine. There is however, something about the area inside that lures me. Perhaps its the vibrant colours matched with the traditional puppets and the intricacies on it’s wall or the fact that I’m able to escape Bali’s scorching heat. The seats, graced in Princeton Orange, complements the wooden floors, bringing an earthly connection to the table. To me, everything is just right. The ambience, food, colours, furnitures, you name 122

it. Everything complements one another. I don’t need an excuse to come back to this place. Each time I return to Boneka, I’m always accompanied by someone new. Someone I can introduce this beautiful place to; may it be family, colleagues or a business partner. They all feel the same “homeliness” twinge. Tonight, I start my food journey with none other than a tantalizing plate of fresh oysters. It was the pleasant aroma of food on the grill that draws me outside. To the left of the entrance door, there’s an array of local cuisines neatly presented, a haven for those dying to have a splendor taste of Balinese food. Not to worry, Boneka ranges from local all the way to continental fusion. and if you still can’t make up your mind, there’s the chef specialty dish imprinted in the menu on your table. Yes, the a la carte menu too, is ready on selection. What’s a good feast without a good atmosphere? Entertainments are available here in Boneka everyday; a traditional Balinese Dance on Wednesdays and Sundays, and a Jazz band to fill up the rest of the week. Having an excellent dinner program just won’t

suffice. Boneka is also known for it’s daily breakfast and the Sunday Brunch programme which is actually currently so eminent, you are perhaps better off booking a table two weeks in advance. On a Sunday afternoon, you’ll be able to revel in a sumptuous range of food, namely Boneka’s Wagyu Steak, Lobster Egg Omelette and the Avruga Pearl Blinis (a caviar dish). Boneka opens it’s door at 12 on Sunday, but guests can enjoy a complimentary selection of aperitifs in King Cole’s Bar or try St. Regis Bali’s signature cocktail, Bloody Mary. A high quality of service simply combines with superb food to produce this one-of-a-kind dining entity. Even when it’s a buffet-style dinner, the food comes to you. The waiters I’ve noticed, are always on the go, offering guests anything and everything. They really do go the extra mile to make this place feels like home. My frequent trips to Bali really wouldn’t be the same without St. Regis’s Boneka. It’s becoming a habit of mine to indulge. And I have Boneka to blame for it. MAMASAN: VINTAGE, SPEAK EASY, THE RENAISSANCE OF CLASSIC ASIAN CUIISINES. One thing I was thankful for when I stepped into Mamasan, is that it’s actually indoor. The rain outside was rather heavy and really, the arrival of a tasteful indoor, fully air-conditioned dining institution in Bali is long overdue. Mamasan is beautifully conceived by none other than Sarong’s Brainchild, Will Meyrick. Quite frankly, I was rather amazed at how much more vast the whole restaurant seems to be. Before I had time to take in all the sleek couture right before my eyes, I was ushered up a flight of stairs proceeding past the brick wall and onto the second storey where I met Will. The bar and lounge area upstairs has a more of a casual and cosy appeal, a slightly different concept to the dining area below. It has a capacity of 80 and there is even a live cooking area to be opened soon. Before englightening me with his story, I was sipping on the house’s Campari Sour. It was presented in a unique kind of enigmatic flask. To start it off, he described how Mamasan came to be. With Sarong Restaurant already secured under his belt, he felt that something was missing from the Balinese scene. Will was dying to fashion an oriental dining concept coupled with a retro twist and a speak-easy bar. To understand Asian food, you have to understand their culture. And so Will embarked on a journey across Asia for inspirations.

So how did the notion of Mamasan come about? “You might find this funny, but I had a lot of ibuibu (madams) coming to teach me recipes from all over Asia”. And the good thing is that, when you’re sitting here in Mamasan. There you have it. Mamasan in a nutshell. An Asian street food concept balled into a fine display of vintage art. I then made my way back to the first storey for what I reckon will be a lovely dinner. This time, I could really fathom the vivid reminiscence of colonial Britain in Shanghai. Of course, the enormous painting of a Mama San brought an oriental air to the whole scene. It was much like the prohibition. It was so surreal, you’ll almost feel like you are sitting in a movie set. Everything around me look so picturesque, I could just sit there the whole night gawking at the classic photographs and the retro inspired lightings. While waiting for my meal, I was recommended one of the house’s finest cocktail selection; The P.I.M.P. First, I had the Yam Talay of squid, shrimp and fish with tomato, chili and lime dressing. The dish is presented in a simple manner, very Thai-esque if you ask me. Will had told me prior to my meal, that he’s implemented his own western twist into these Asian cuisines. I could sort of see where he was coming from. The twist was indispensable

as most Western tongue would flinch at the notion of a true Asian spice. My main course, Crispy lamb ribs came at just the right moment. Oh, they’ve somehow managed to tweak my lamb ribs into an Asian cuisine. The coriander lemon segments and pomegrants sauce gave it’s distinctive Asian taste. The crisps however, instills the dish’s western charm. Taste wise, it was sublime. The portion was just enough and there’s still dessert. My heart did a little dance of it’s own upon looking at the dessert menu. I chose the crème brule with Vietnamese Coffee affogato. They say, crème brules are like men. Rock solid on the outside and soft on the inside. Two little taps, and in went my spoon. I knew it was going to be one of those desserts with a voluptuous feeling in your mouth. The Vietnamese coffee was something new to me and it was definitely a refreshing break from my cappuccino routine. SARDINE: THE UNPRETENTIOUS LITTE GEM. Entering Sardine, the first thing that caught my attention, was a pair of penetrating Balinese eyes. It was an abstract painting beautifully sprawled across the bar area. A concept of modernism with a feel of Balinese subtlety engulfs my surrounding. I was greeted by Pika, the owner of Sardine, a lovely woman with an amiable nature. Everything about this place screams sophistication yet the beauty of it, is that everyone seems so casual and relaxed. The roof is made of bamboo shingles. Having a background in interior design, Pika chose natural and sometimes even recycled materials to create an organic feel to the whole place. "It's like giving back to nature." Briskly scanning the menu, I noticed that the dominant theme is seafood. Perfect. My tastebud was yearning for some sea creatures. What distinguishes Sardine from any other restaurant, is that not only does it offer seafood in glamour and style it also alters it's menu day to day. Moreover, this little gem plays around with mostly local produce giving it different twists and flavours. 124

I had the Smoked Sardines to start the night. It was an array of sardines lined on top of freshly baked potatoes; refreshing and definitely better with black pepper. I then had the Indian Ocean Bouillabaisse. Name wise, this dish stood out for me. It was neatly presented, comprising of a snapper, grouper, sea bass, clams, calamari and jumbo prawn in a saffron-seafood broth with rouille and some croutons. The rouille gives the dish it's signature French touch and the croutons were a nice break from this heavy seafood-loving course. I would say that if you can't make up your mind as to which choice of seafood you'd like to indulge in for the night, pick this course. It literally has everything. Definitely made the right choice there. For dessert, I polished off a warm chocolate fondant. I couldn't help it. I'm a chocolate person but as soon as I ordered it, I felt a little regret as I had a feeling that the chocolate was going to be so rich and intense, I would probably not be able to stomach more than a spoonful. I should have clearly checked my preconception out the door. The chocolate was a warm

explosion in my mouth, with just the right amount of richness. Not too bland, and not too filling. It's like, the chef was reading my mind or something. I was recommended the Espresso Martini Arak to compliment my dessert. And that's exactly what it did. Purpose served. Something about this drink blends sensationally with the sweetness engraved in my tongue. Upon finishing my meal, I took another look around. The atmosphere is definitely unpretentious. Sardine would never classify itself as a French, Italian, Western or a even a fine dining institution. Nor is it a nondescript eatery. It simply is a place with a laid back and relaxed ambiance. JEMME: MORE THAN JUST SPARKLES. Diamond is a girl’s best friend. So is Jemme apparently. As usual, I did my own little digging before finding myself on the front door of The House of Jemme. It was a white, manual sliding door, one you’d expect in chic luxury houses, not in restaurants. Located in Jalan Raya Petitenget, I first found out that it is indeed a restaurant in addition to being an eminent jewellery boutique. Yes that’s right. What separates this little but nonetheless grandiose restaurant from others, is that it has it’s own little appendage jewellery boutique. Ask the ladies, and they’ll know where it is. The House of Jemme is definitely one of the more eccentric places in Bali. There is no single word to describe the scene. You couldn’t help but feel like you just wandered into a royal….house. It seems that way as strangely, the place feels homey and doesn’t at all give you the impression that it’s pretentious. The dominant colour of elegant white and royal purple combine to set up an ambiance of a rather tranquil fine dining eatery. In this fully airconditioned dining area, you’ll see precious ornaments in glass display cases on it’s walls. This definitely adds to the whole royalty theme. Should you prefer having your dinner outside,

there are seats overlooking the beautiful paddy rice fields. Jemme’s Sales Manager, welcomed me into this lovely compartment. She first illustrated how the concept came about. Jemme originates from the word “gem” correlating to its roots in it’s fine display of posh jewelleries. It was finally time to taste the menu. I first had the Shredded Duck, Roast Pumpkin & Shiitake Salad. The pumpkin was definitely a refreshing twist to the dish, jolting my inner senses. The dish was presented in a simple delicate fix. Just enough to charm one’s taste bud. As I was lightly ingesting my salad, there’s this notion in my head; The Beautiful People. I have no idea why, but I felt rather…beautiful. Perhaps it was the enchanting jewelleries hanging on the wall or the royally decorated furnishings. Okay, you get the idea. Then, came my main, roasted lamb aptly served with baked potatoes, broccoli, baby carrot, anchovies, Balinese red beans, a succulent creamy potato gratin, lamb horseradish and a choice of either a gravy made of cranberry, orange and herb sauce or mint sauce. I swiftly jumped at a chance of tasting the lamb. The mint sauce gave it the kind of savouring this

dish badly needs. It was stimulating to say the least. I have to say though, that I much preferred the gravy. The creamy gratin was very memorable as it was of the right texture and proportion and really, I probably do have a thing for cheesy delights. The greeneries on the side gave my tongue a little break from all these juiciness. By the time it was over, I kind of feel a sense of remorse. Why does it have to be over? On the promotional side, The House of Jemme is conducting a New Healthy Lunch campaign from Monday through Friday with dishes at IDR 35.000++ or three delectable bowls of soup, salad and a main for a mere IDR 60.000++. It’s vast range of cocktails is also going on promotion as they are putting up a 2 for 1 on all cocktails Monday through Thursday. In the day, the ravishing paddy rice fields are simply easy on the eyes. By night, Jemme is the right place to celebrate life with a glass of wine or champagne. In the beginning, he started with men's collection as his limited knowledge allowed him to do just that. Further along, he noticed that women spend more money on clothes, so he switched to women’s line. He also learned that he has to come up with designs that will fit most sizes to guarantee sales, as most of his customers have no time for fitting. His habit in cutting the pattern 3 dimensionally (on a tailor's dummy) helps a lot in searching designs that will fit a large range of sizes. He uses a lot of bias cutting technique and for fastening, he uses knots instead of buttons and zippers. Unwittingly, his silhouette become very Asian, as most ethnic Asian styles use these same principals. The solution he found in solving the problem of sizes has become his most distinctive design character.

Fashion is like a sweet revenge for him. Being the youngest of five siblings meant that in his younger years he was subjected to wearing his brother and sisters' hand-me-downs. Fed up with getting old clothes all the time, he deconstructed the out of date shirts and pants to make outfits that were more to his liking. Most of his designs are sleek, clean and avoid complicated frills. Therefore they are easy to copy. At first he was furious at being copied so blatantly but he eventually takes it as a compliment. He always strives to be a step ahead by using exotic materials that are not easy to obtain. He travels extensively around South Asia like Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand for fabric 'hunting' every few weeks. These trips gives him the chance to source accessories and artifacts that compliment his clothes.
