REALM OF RHYTHM

Group Porject Partner: Wandong Xue

Overview

This project is called Realm of Rhythm. It combines a city nightclub, swimming pools, WTE, and MRF. While nightclub, by their nature, has very strong social attributes– It’s a place for people to entertain and have fun. The waste recycling center, however, definitely has the opposite functionality compared to it, and we thought this was very interesting to combine them together. Because people won’t go to a nightclub to take a trip to the trash recycling center, but rather, a nightclub that is within a trash recycling center–the idea of such can attract people’s interest and curiosity.

BRONX INCUBATOR

Group Porject Partner: Atemis Zeyun Zhang

Overview

Food is an essential theme for the Bronx: Hunts Point Produce Market, located about 20 minutes from our site, is the most extensive collection and distribution center for farm products in New York. 12 markets provide fresh food supplies to the area and are potential sites for food banks. Meanwhile, Zona De Cuba, located above the Post Office, is as unique as the many small restaurants that attract visitors to the area. With the introduction of the new vertical farming and food court, we hope to take full advantage of the landmark’s location to complete the Bronx’s food network, stretching attractions to the west Bronx.

The project aims to integrate with the diverse urban landscape of the Bronx, catering to a population of 160,000 across Concourse and Mott Haven. It will enhance local greenspaces and serve the densely populated residential areas. The initiative will tap into the region’s vibrant cultural life, including museums, theaters, and bars, by introducing programs catering to recreational and artistic interests. Additionally, the project will involve local schools and vocational training centers, providing educational opportunities and employment in urban vertical farming, thus affecting the community deeply in both learning and operational aspects.

Site Context and Issue

The original plan of Farragut was more concerned with economic efficiency to accommodate more residents, thus neglecting the comfort of the house’s interior and the communication between the residents. We found that the existing community is divided by separate towers, and there is no strong connection between people. In the precedent study, we decided to integrate mat houses with the original tower to build a healthier and more harmonious community.

Scheme

We chose to expand the Farragut house concentrically as a pentagon and connect it to the ground - thus creating a relationship between the podium and the tower. The podium extends down to interact with the ground. At the same time, the pentagonal form is weakened, compromising and clashing with the urban texture and geography of the site, creating a new tectonic structure. As a result, the extruded and the expanded elements together form the dynamic circulation between towers.

Close up

The difficulty of young people to take care of their families and work has also become a potential reason for the low income in this community. We want to provide young residents with career training and job opportunities close to their homes by introducing new business district chains and public services.

Unit Types

We want to use the same HOUSE UNIT shape to cater to different statuses for young people, such as teenagers, students, and couples. This group of users may consider a more independent space to live but also communicate and share their life much more. However, we also consider some who live with their parents or older people to take care of each other.

Therefore, we designed two categories of units: hostel and family type--- which are in a similar shape. Beyond that, public services, including career training, social storage, and entertainment, are contained to support our users. They are located on the ground floor and the second floor inside the Farragut tower and are surrounded by the mat houses.

Location

37-02 College Point Blvd

Flushing, NY 11354

Overview

There are two main risks in Downtown Flushing, Flood (surge flooding from the south and drainage problems mainly from the east. It is a high-density residential areas, which acts as intermediate zone, very easy to store water from both directions cause by the terrain characteristics of the road. )and Traffic jam (Main Street and College Point Blvd). What do you think of building in an area will be flooded in decades? It sounds insane. However, we will bring you this crazy idea, called EcoTransit Enclave, to transform the flood-threatened area into a sustainable TOD.
