LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT The 2019-2020 school year was far different than any of us could have anticipated! While I watched the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities across the globe through the news reports, I was able to directly see and feel its effects on Wyomissing as my family and I safely traversed our neighborhood. There are so many tragic and sad stories to be heard and mourned as a result of the spread of the coronavirus; however, when we look beyond all the hardships and illnesses the pandemic caused, there have been glimmers of positive notes reverberating throughout our community. Families spent meaningful time together, neighbors reunited through driveway conversations, businesses developed creative means of serving their clientele, and community organizations rallied together to support those in need.

WAEF was just one of the many foundations that was able to support our local community. In March 2020, the grants committee funded over $18,000 to aid the school district in purchasing devices to be distributed for “at-home-learning�. At the end of the school year, WAEF awarded 25 scholarships to graduating students and community members totaling $40,500. Throughout the school year, the Foundation supported the Wyomissing Area School District through grants totaling $83,476.24.

With the rising challenges that every school district faces, I am proud to be a member of a group working to support our schools, teachers, staff, and students. I look forward to the 2020-2021 school year when WAEF will again strive to support excellence in education and create even more incredible moments in the Wyomissing Area School District.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The 2019-2020 school year was one that we will certainly never forget! We started off the year welcoming new board members, bringing a nationally-recognized speaker to all three campuses on the topic of resilience, planning a book launch fundraiser, and looking ahead to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of WAEF. From the summer of 2019 to the spring of 2020, WAEF approved various grant requests and created incredible moments in all three schools: from youth sports registrations and equipment to after school care and tutoring; from leadership opportunities for students to an author visit in collaboration with a reading program at the WHEC; from grants to create energy turbines and measure water quality in our area to fine motor kits for elementary students and transitional materials for special education students in high school, and many more. We shifted gears as a result of the COVID-19 crisis and provided 50 iPads for use by elementary students who needed devices at home for distance learning, and our Toast planning committee revamped the plan for the Blue & White party, turning that event into an online auction.

WAEF works closely with the Wyomissing Area School District administration and staff to provide funding for grants and projects to enhance educational opportunities for students in all grades. We assist students by providing scholarships to motivated graduates, by giving teachers additional tools to stimulate young minds, and by engaging our community so that we can achieve our mission. The 2019-2020 school year was one of growth and change, and I am grateful for your continued support. Please enjoy taking a look at our Annual Report, which tells the story of the past school year and all of the incredible moments that WAEF was able to facilitate.

Did you know...?

Did you know that when you support WAEF, you are supporting each and every student in the Wyomissing Area School District?

The funds raised by WAEF are given back to the district through teacher-driven grants that support all areas of education at all grade levels, K-12.

There are particular changes and challenges facing our District. WAEF manages three funds dedicated to covering expenses for extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities for students with economic challenges.

Over 37% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Examples of some of the grants awarded during the 2019-2020 school year

Social Skills Educator WAEF was thrilled to host Brooks Gibbs in September 2019! This social skills educator presented his message related to building emotional resilience and living by the Golden Rule to students in grades 3-9 in sessions at all three schools. After school, teachers participated in a professional learning session.

Shakespeare Festival

Spartan Fund

WAEF was proud to support this one-day performance experience by the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival!

This group of talented actors performed in front of all students in grades 9-12. This performance of MacBeth was selected because all students have read or will read this play as part of their 10th grade Language Arts curriculum. This WAEF grant touched the lives of approximately 600 students!

This fund, established by anonymous donors, supported elementary students who needed assistance with sports registration fees and equipment as well as after-school care and tutoring.

Reading is Our Thing The Anne McCullough Fund held by WAEF supports students in many ways. The Reading is Our Thing program promotes a love of learning by rewarding students for their commitment to daily reading.

Water Quality Water quality grant: Dr. Liskey’s grant will allow students to learn testing techniques while evaluating the quality of local waterways in collaboration with students and professors at PSU Berks.

Islamic Geometry Mural Mike Miller, WASD Art Teacher, received approval for a grant from WAEF to create and install an Islamic Geometry mural in West Reading. Vicki Combs, one of WAEF’s most generous donors, supported the cost of this project with her generous contribution! The students’ designs were made into stencils that were used in the larger mural pattern.

The mural was installed in June 2020.

3D Printer Recycler The purpose of the 3D printer recycler project is to use the plastic from old 3D prints and recycle them into new spools of reusable filament.

Wings of Memory mural

Personalized Name Plates

The Wings of Memory mural on the 600 block of Court Street honors West Reading residents who made an impact on the arts. The students’ input was very influential to the final design of the mural. The design of the wings was painted directly on the wall by local tattoo artist, Meg McClennan, who is also a WASD grad and Public Art Workshop Alumna.

Students in Mr. Miller’s robotics class continued an enrichment project begun by recent graduates to create personalized name plates for teachers at the JSHS, using the drill press funded by WAEF. This year four students led the project and applied their robotics coursework to this application.

Cello Grant Six cellos were purchased for the Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center, to allow students who otherwise might not be able to learn and practice this instrument to participate.

Small Group Enhancements This grant allows a space to be created for efficiency and purpose for small, primary group instruction, where students are accommodated organizationally and physically.

Fine Motor Skills Boxes WASD’s Director of Special Education, Jessica Lengle, submitted a grant request to purchase supplies to create fine motor skills boxes for students in kindergarten and 1st grade. Mrs. Lengle wrote: “As our kindergarten and 1st grade teachers continue to teach academic skills, they need additional opportunities to build in fine motor skill practice.”

Musical Instruments Guests at the 2019 Blue & White party supported our request to fund new musical instruments for students in elementary grades through high school.

Pending Grants Several grants that were approved during the 2019-2020 school year are scheduled to commence during the 2020-2021 school year as a result of the school closure due to COVID-19.

The Class of 1959 Memorial Scholarship | $2,000

These scholarships were made possible by the generosity of businesses, families, individuals and groups who believe in the power of education and wanted to make a long-lasting contribution to the students of Wyomissing Area School District. The support of our community ensures our success!

The Class of 1963 First Generation College Student Scholarship| $1,000

This scholarship will be awarded to a meritorious member of the senior class who has shown academic and leadership potential in both school and community.

Applicants are evaluated based on school activities, academic record and community service.

Winner: Julia Cheskey (A)

This scholarship will be awarded to the senior with the most improved GPA between 9th and 12th grades. Since the winner is determined by a mathematical computation, no application is required.

Winner: Evan Miller (B)

This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who demonstrates academic excellence, is the first in his/her family to attend a two- or four-year college, and has financial need.

These scholarships will be awarded to seniors at Wyomissing Area High School who will pursue post-secondary education either at a 4-year or 2-year college or trade and technology school and have financial need.

Over 130 applications were reviewed for these 25 scholarships totaling $40,500.

While we were unable to gather for our annual Scholarship Award Ceremony, we are nonetheless incredibly proud of their accomplishments!

This scholarship is given in memory of Creighton Bieber to an applicant who has experienced personal hardship, has financial need, and is inspired to pursue post-secondary education.

Winner: Evelyn Hoyer (N) The Customers Bank Trade and Technology Scholarships – 2 Scholarships @ $2,000 each

This scholarship will be awarded to one or two senior students who have shown academic progress and who will enroll in a post-secondary technology/trade program. The fund will also help

Also, the candidate must be elected or appointed to a leadership role in sports, in school, or in the community during their junior and/or senior year.

Winner: Rebecca Kotula (Q) The James R. Houck Memorial Scholarship | $1,000

This scholarship will be awarded to a senior interested in pursuing a degree in business and/or leadership.

Winner: Caroline Allen (R) The Koullias Family Scholarship | $1,000

This scholarship will be awarded to a senior planning to study Electrical Engineering, Math or Sciences in college. Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in math and science through their course elections and grades.

Winner: Alexandria Messenger (S) The Samuel R. Kozloff Scholarship | $3,500

This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who has demonstrated expanding interest and progressive accomplishment in the areas of social studies or foreign languages through his or her HS curriculum as well as community service.

Winner: Sarah Gechter (T) The Gertrude K. McGonigle Scholarship | $1,250

This scholarship will be awarded to an adult age 24+ with financial need who either resides in or is employed by the Wyomissing Area School District and is re-entering education after at least a 1 year lapse in time.

Winner: Kendra Snyder (U) The Dr. Nirav Patel Memorial Scholarship | $1,250

This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who has shown perseverance in coping with an ongoing medical condition, who

Winner: Lily Reck (W) The Women’s Club of Wyomissing Scholarship | $1,250 This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who has performed outstanding service to school and community, and demonstrated academic excellence and financial need.

Helene Zintak Bunny (Stauffer) Zintak grew up in Wyomissing and attended Wyomissing Elementary School before moving to West Reading in 4th grade. She returned to Wyomissing & Wyomissing High School in 9th grade and graduated in 1966. Her graduating class was the very first class to graduate from the new Wyomissing High School building.

Following graduation, Bunny attended Monticello College in Illinois and transferred to George Washington University her sophomore year. She married Ben Zintak in 1969 and moved back to Wyomissing where all three of their children (Jason, Jennifer and Amy) were raised and attended Wyomissing Schools until their senior high school years. While raising children, Bunny was an active member of the Junior League of Reading as well as a volunteer for other organizations.

AWARD RECIPIENT

In 1975, while she was raising her 3 young children, Bunny returned to school at Hahnemann University Medical School to pursue a career as a Physician’s Assistant.

Graduating in 1978, her clinical career as a PA began with Family Practice before transitioning to Medical Oncology. Following approximately 15 years in the clinical setting, she transitioned to industry as the Director of Clinical Research for products under development at Arrow International, now Teleflex. Shortly after Teleflex acquired Arrow International, she became the Vice President for Clinical & Regulatory Affairs for Ventracor, International, an Australian based medical device company. Now semi-retired, she continues as an Independent Consultant for medical device clinical and regulatory affairs.

Semi-retirement has allowed her to re-focus much of her time and effort toward giving back to her community. She joined the WAEF Board of Directors in 2010, and over the next 9 years served as Secretary, Vice President and Chair of the Grants & Scholarship committee. In addition to her contributions to WAEF, Bunny is also a member of the Reading Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and began serving on the Board of Directors of the Reading Public Museum in January 2020.

Even though she is proud of her professional accomplishments in clinical medicine and industry, Bunny considers her crowning achievement raising her three children and guiding them to be the wonderful adults they are today. Her son, Jason, now resides with his family in San Francisco, CA. Her daughter, Jennifer Weil, and her family live in Westport CT. Her youngest daughter, Amy Combs, and her family are Wyomissing residents and Amy currently serves as the Vice President on the WAEF Board. With each of her children having three children of their own, the remainder of her time is spent keeping up with her 9 grandchildren.

We regret not being able to celebrate Bunny at the 2020 Scholarship Award Ceremony and look forward to acknowledging her distinction during the 2020-2021 school year.

25th

Anniversary

In 1994, Wyomissing resident and school board member, Ruthi Walker, attended a conference and learned about education foundations and how they could benefit public schools. Inspired, she returned to Wyomissing and formed a steering committee to talk about creating an education foundation in the community she loved. WAEF was formed in February 1995 as a non-profit organization. The founding trustees were Nancy Hemmerich, Barbara Homsher, Barbara Kline, Jeraldine Kozloff, Edward J. Kuhn Jr., Stephen Murray, John Rothenberger, Charles Sullivan, Charles Walker, Ruth Walker, and J. William Widing III. Jeri Kozloff volunteered as the first Executive Director of the organization in 1997 and View the 25th Anniversary served in that role until 2000.

In memory of

Jeri Kozloff It is with great sadness that we let you know that Jeri Kozloff passed away in May 2020. Jeri was the first Executive Director of WAEF after serving on the WASD faculty. She served her first year as Executive Director as a volunteer, only taking a small salary starting in her second year.

Jeri and David established the Samuel R. Kozloff Memorial Scholarship with WAEF in memory of their son, Sam. They have established a relationship with their scholarship recipients over the years and have enjoyed mentoring many of them and inviting them into their home each year. Jeri and David have both attended WAEF’s annual scholarship ceremony to present their scholarship each year and take great pride in doing so. Dave was also honored by WAEF last year as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Suffice it to say, the Kozloffs have been very involved with and important to WAEF since the beginning, and Jeri will be missed by many in the community.

Ann will remain on the Board until the end of the 2020-2021 school year, but she has passed her Treasurer responsibilities on to Dan Rothermel. Ann’s work for WAEF over the years has been immeasurable. We are grateful for her leadership of the Finance Committee and her countless hours serving as Treasurer and poring over our financials, making sure every detail has been reviewed for accuracy. WAEF’s strong financial position is largely due to Ann’s steadfast commitment to the foundation. Thank you, Ann!

Mike began his service to WAEF in 2015 and has served on the Finance Committee for the entirety of his tenure on the Board. Mike was appointed President of the Board of WAEF in 2016 and has provided steadfast leadership and support. Mike’s connection to Schneider Electric has benefited WAEF through Schneider’s support of large projects such as the sound system for the auditorium, portable display systems, laser cutter/engraver, and robotics equipment, as well as donations in recognition of Mike’s time spent as a volunteer. Thank you, Mike!

Lauren joined the board in 2019 and has two children in the district. Lauren has enjoyed her time serving on the Grants & Scholarships Committee as well as the ad hoc Policies Committee. WAEF Welcomes New Board Members We are honored to welcome Michael Herr, Chris McCaffrey and Laura Waetjen to the WAEF Board.

Mike and his family are 13-year Wyomissing residents. He and his wife are parents of an 8th grader and proud owners of their dog, Seven. He is the Executive Vice President and Managing Director PA of Tompkins Insurance Agencies. Chris McCaffrey serves as the WASD School Board representative on the WAEF Board and is the father of two children in the District. He is an 18-year resident of Wyomissing and 20-year educator who loves coaching soccer and basketball and enjoys the outdoors and home restoration. Laura and her husband, Marc, are parents of two children, one in the WASD. Laura was the President of the Junior League of Reading and served on their board for 4 years. She is on the Wyomissing PTA Board and volunteers as the Children’s Education Director for Bausman United Church of Christ. Book Launch Party In September 2019, thanks to the generosity of our hosts, Alissa & Peter Carlino, almost 100 guests enjoyed catered food and drinks and live music while celebrating the launch of a children’s book written & illustrated by WASD’s own WREC Principal, Corbett Babb and art teacher, Mike Miller. Guests received a signed copy of Melody’s Gift, and all party proceeds benefited WAEF. Thank you to Corbett, Mike, and our hosts for thinking of WAEF!

Class of 1999 Gathers to honor Sean Flannery Thank you to the Class of 1999 for contributing over $900 to the Sean M. Flannery Scholarship Fund! We hope you had a great time at your reunion and appreciate your support!

Toast Online Auction Thank you to our sponsors, donors, and event planning volunteers for all you did to make this year’s event a success. A special thanks to the 82 active bidders who participated in the online auction!

This year’s “Toast” series - originally planned as the Blue & White Party and Fire & Ice Party - shifted to an online auction event. The COVID-19 crisis presented unique challenges in our fundraising efforts, but we are encouraged and inspired by the generosity of businesses and individuals in our community who fulfilled – and in some cases, exceeded - their commitment to support WAEF through sponsorship of and donations to this auction event, even in such difficult times. Auction bidding was robust and surpassed our expectations!

With your support, we were able to net over $60,000 total, including $12,000 for this year’s Fund-a-Need project, the sound system for the JSHS Auditorium!

On behalf of the Board of Directors of WAEF as well as the hard-working planning committee, thank you so much for your generosity! Your support ensures our ability to continue to provide grants to enhance educational opportunities in the Wyomissing Area School District.

EITC – A Win/Win for Schools and Businesses Wyomissing Area Education Foundation is an approved Educational Improvement Organization in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program.

WAEF is proud to be a participating organization in the Commonwealth’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program. Administered by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development, the EITC program awards tax credits to businesses that make contributions to approved scholarship organizations and/or educational improvement organizations. WAEF’s Student Committee Our student leadership team for the 2019-2020 year included Colleen Gieringer, Camille Croft, Maddie Menon, Natalie Fischetti, Elizabeth Harenza, and Anna Huber.

Thanks to the many students who joined the committee this year and to our adult leaders: Erin Croft, Michele Fischetti, Amy Combs, and Kelli Maturi.

Members of WAEF’s Student Committee spent part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday giving back by painting an office in the high school building. Service is one of the goals of this committee, and we’re proud of the work they did!

The major event planned by the Student Committee is the annual Senior Day parade & picnic.

We were sad to miss this milestone event this year and look forward to bringing it back in 2021!

Loyalty Society In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the WAEF, we are pleased to announce the launch of WAEF’s Loyalty Society, which acknowledges the contributions of our supporters who have given a gift to the foundation for at least five consecutive years. These consecutive gifts – of any size and to any of our funds – provide immediate funds that allow WAEF to enhance opportunities in the Wyomissing Area School District and enrich the educational experience in this exceptional place to learn.

When you give any amount to any area of WAEF for five fiscal years in a row, you will be recognized for your generosity. In order to sustain membership, simply make a gift every fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) without interruption. Regardless of the area you support each year, or how much you choose to give, the impact of your gifts is powerful. Collectively, annual gifts influence WAEF’s ability to meet new opportunities and emerging needs while also honoring the timeless tradition of giving back.

Robert L. Scoboria WASD Superintendent The Wyomissing Area School District has benefited from WAEF’s support for many years. In typical school years, these collaborations centered on providing support for students and staff in portions of our regular school day, as well as our traditional extra-curricular activities, clubs and special events. With significant changes to our programs caused by COVID-19 last year, WAEF stepped forward as a trusted partner to help us provide virtual education for our students, modified their support to work with our revised activities and demonstrated incredible flexibility to implement their mission within a new school environment. “It didn’t take long to realize the tremendous role that WAEF had in enriching this community. From scholarships, teacher grants, technology support, and arts and music grants, the support of WAEF was widespread and we knew this was an organization we wanted to support.”

Ali Amin, a vascular surgeon, credits his mother with his successful career. Her strong belief in education and service to others led him to pursue a career in medicine. Ali settled in Reading to practice, where he met his wife Patty, a nurse at Penn State Health, St. Joseph Medical Center. The couple moved to Wyomissing, where they raised their daughter, Alexandra.

To honor the memory of his mother and her dedication to the pursuit of education, the Amins chose to reach out to WAEF. “We give back because we have been extremely blessed. In June 2020, founding Board member John Rothenberger and his wife, Gloria, gave $25,000 to WAEF to establish the Foundation Sustainability Endowment Fund and another $25,000 to establish the Wyomissing Scholarship Fund.

This unprecedented level of generosity to WAEF inspired long-time Board Treasurer, Ann Cesarz White, and her husband Doug White, to pledge up to $25,000 as a matching challenge to encourage more giving to WAEF.

WAEF Mission Statement The mission of the Wyomissing Area Education Foundation is to support excellence in education in the Wyomissing Area School District by providing an enriching educational experience that expands the knowledge and maximizes the potential of every student.

WAEF Vision Statement The Wyomissing Area Education Foundation seeks to fulfill its mission of enriching the educational experience in the Wyomissing Area School District and beyond through two primary areas of support: teacher and staff-requested grants for programs, projects and equipment and scholarships that reward academic achievement and other significant accomplishments. To support its efforts, Wyomissing Area Education Foundation will engage the community in fundraising efforts through donation solicitations, events, endowment funds, and support through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.
