I play a game with my children that we call “Love Actually”. The name stems from the 2003 hit movie Love Actually. In the beginning of the film, the narrator says “Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinions starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere.” In the game we play, we think of and share with each other acts of love that we see in our everyday lives. Some examples we have shared recently include older swimmers helping young ones make it safely down the pool in a swim meet, a group of parishioners praying with a grieving wife who recently lost her husband, a fund started to help children who want to play soccer but cannot afford the entry fee, a business sponsoring a new and wonderful community event for all members to enjoy, two women on an evening walk sharing the details of their lives and supporting each other, or a skilled craftsman donating his talent to create items to be used in a school. The list goes on.
As reflect on my three-year term as President of WAEF, I am filled with joy in remembering all the examples of how “love is actually everywhere” that have been able to witness through the organization. The support that our community extends through sharing its time and treasures is truly amazing. Being part of the WAEF Board allows an excellent view of just some of the wonderful acts of kindness and generosity within our community. This past school year WAEF gave grants to all three schools totaling over $68,000. Additionally, WAEF awarded scholarships to 25 students and 2 adults worth a total of $48,450. These grants and scholarships were made possible by acts of love.
As move into another role on the WAEF Board, I would like to welcome Kevin Miller as our next president. Kevin has been a valued member of the WAEF Board for 5 years. If you know Kevin, you would most likely be able to share many stories of his dedication and support to our community.
In my opinion, Kevin’s dedication to the Wyomissing School District is an excellent example of love. would like to share my gratitude for all the board and community members who have supported WAEF over the years. As I said, the ways in which our community members turn out for one another is outstanding. If you are interested in sharing your time or treasure with WAEF, please reach out. Our community is wonderful because of all our members, and the more people who are actively involved, the better we can be.
Lastly, a grateful and wholehearted thank you goes to Molly Robbins, without whom this organization would not be what it is. Molly’s tireless effort and commitment to WAEF are a blessing to our community. I will miss working with her as President, but I am heartened by the friendship we have developed over the past several years.
Great efforts have been taken to ensure the accuracy of this Annual Report. If there is an error, please accept our apologies and contact the Executive Director, Molly McCullough Robbins, so future reports and permanent records reflect accurate gift information. mrobbins@wyoarea.org

Thank you for taking the time to review WAEF’s 2022-2023 Annual report. The theme this year is “Why WAEF?”, and we aim to tell the story of the impact WAEF has on our students, teachers, and Wyomissing Area School District community. Within these pages, you will see photos and read about the teacher-driven grants that WAEF funded in order to enhance educational opportunities for our students, the scholarships that help our graduating seniors and hard-working adults with the burden of tuition beyond our doors, the way we honor faculty and staff members who make a difference, and how our WAEF Student Committee celebrates our senior class and volunteers throughout the year. In addition, you will see the list of generous community members who support WAEF with their donations. Why WAEF? Supporting WAEF means that every donation makes a difference and allows WAEF to continue to fulfill its mission. Thank you so much!

2022-2023 School Year
Did you know that when you support WAEF, you are supporting each and every student in the Wyomissing Area School District? The funds raised by WAEF are given back to the district through teacher-driven grants that support all areas of education at all grade levels, K-12.
Examples of some of the grants awarded during the 2022-2023 school year
The purpose of the project is to scan the Jr. Sr. High School Library’s collection of yearbooks and other archival items, making them available to the community.
The purpose of the project is to allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to analyze the strength of various materials. Students in 7th and 8th grade STEM and the students in our four engineering classes can use the piece of equipment. The total number of students is approximately 140 students per year and can be used for many years.
This grant will allow students/teachers to create digital file formats of three-dimensional objects. Those models can be stored, manipulated, scaled, and replicated using various mediums of 3D printing and also integrated with virtual/augmented reality applications. All students taking Art, Computer Science, STEM, Computer design, etc. courses will benefit greatly from exposure to these 21st century tools and skills.
Students in AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics and newly AP Pre-Calculus utilize TI-Nspire calculators for their coursework and AP exam. This grant will fund the replacement of the calculators that have broken or reached lifespan to ensure all students have access to this valuable and necessary tool.
This grant will support the purchase of new technology to enhance experiential learning and innovation. Two WREC science teachers applied for this grant after their Total Experience Learning training at Albright. It includes equipment that will align with the upcoming Next Generation Science Standards which not only change what our teachers are teaching, but more so, they change how our teachers teach science.
This project was designed to create a hands-on, outdoor learning area. The area will utilize STEAM concepts such as simple machines, engineering design theory, art, music, and more. There are many benefits that students gain through learning in an outdoor STEM environment. This project is needed to create a space that can promote opportunities for students to gain these benefits. Some of these include (but are not limited to):
✓ Increase self-confidence and feelings of empowerment
✓ Improve cooperation and respect
✓ Increase critical thinking
✓ Allow students to take responsibility
✓ Help students learn to work as teams and become better problem solvers as adults
✓ Develop new skills
✓ Increase motivation
✓ Improve cognitive achievement tests
✓ Create a rise in intuitions about movement, force, and physical interactions
The purpose of this project is to research, build, test, and evaluate different types of solar technologies to power the Wyomissing Area School District. The project will be worked on by the 60 engineering students, approximately 20 students in the electricity class, and 30 students in the environmental science class. The data will also be shared with the statistics class and the business office for a feasibility study to utilize solar energy at the Jr./Sr. High School. Students over the next 4-6 years will also utilize the equipment.
6th graders who have suffered trauma or struggle with other mental health issues will have the opportunity to begin their morning with a certified yoga instructor to ground themselves in the present and learn strategies to cope with challenges in their lives.
This grant provided funding for multiple small appliances for the JSHS food prep classes to enhance learning opportunities in this course.
Yale Young Scholar Global registration fees, Model UN registration fees, Hugh O’Brien leadership camp, Harvard & MIT’s “Take the World Forward” program, 7th grade Spartan Success Day, Field Trip to Yocum, ½ tuition for Albright after-school college program
$4,755.95 was provided all year for classroom supplies and resources requested by 34 teachers.
Spartan Fund
13 requests for items like youth sports uniforms and registration fees, playground fees, pool memberships, and youth basketball camp.
BCTC books, course materials and supplies for students
Total Grants 2022-2023
$68,282.81
✓ Increase the belief that they make a difference in their community

Highlights of Corbett’s accomplishments include: Corbett is a 1988 graduate of Wyomissing Area HS, Ithaca College, Shippensburg University and Widener University where he received his doctorate in educational leadership. He has served the District since 1994 as a physical education teacher, football coach, dean of students, and JSHS assistant principal prior to appointment as WREC Principal for the past 14 years. In 2016, Corbett was recognized by the National Institute of School Leadership as one of 13 Pennsylvania Distinguished Principals.
Corbett has consistently stepped forward to help all Spartans succeed – from his early work as facilitator for student council and foreign exchange student clubs to recent work hosting the District’s first Pre-K program and the Olivet Boys and Girls Club at WREC.
Most importantly, Corbett and his wife Natalie have celebrated a life together here in the Wyomissing Area Community - raising sons Ryan, Gavin and Nolan as Wyo Area graduates.
Corbett is an example of an alumnus who has taken the lessons learned as a student here, and applied them to provide a lifetime of service and support for generations of Spartans. WAEF was proud to honor Corbett at the 2023 Blue & White Party at the Reading Public Museum.
There have been changes to our Board of Directors since the last issue of the Annual Report. Lauren Zuidema remains on the board but has stepped down from her role as President to allow Kevin Miller, long-time board member, to move into that position. Thank you to Lauren for her steadfast leadership during her term as President!
Kevin Miller was born and raised in Wyomissing, and currently lives in the district. Having attended Wyomissing from kindergarten through senior year, he played baseball, basketball, and was captain of the football team his senior year. Post high school, he graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Business Management. Kevin’s wife, Sara, is also a Wyomissing graduate, and together, they have 2 children, Hudson (2) and Cecilia (8 months). Kevin is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and the branch manager of Berkshire Investment Group, located on Penn Avenue in Wyomissing. Kevin has been coaching Jr. High Football for Wyomissing over the last 8 years, and was the former Boys’ Jr. High Basketball Assistant Coach for 7 years. He enjoys spending time with his family, coaching and playing sports, as well as traveling. Some of his best memories at Wyomissing include playing sports, creating lifelong friends, and the teachers and coaches that helped him excel in and out of the classroom, and on and off the field.
Since moving to Wyomissing in 2007, Jody Menon has been actively involved in the Wyomissing schools in various volunteer roles, from assisting teachers in the classrooms to helping organize school-wide events. She served for several years as the PTA membership chair and as the PTA representative to the WAEF Board, and participated on numerous committees, including ten years on the Career Day and minigrants committees. She and her husband, Sanand, have a son and a daughter, both graduates of Wyomissing Area High School. Jody was an attorney in Connecticut until 2000, when she moved to Berks County and joined the faculty of Albright College. There she spent twelve years teaching ethics and law-related courses as a member of the Philosophy department. She has previously served as a member of Wyomissing Borough Council and on the boards of the Wyomissing Library and the Friends of Reading Hospital. She is also a sustaining member of the Junior League of Reading, a past president and the current treasurer of the Berks County Medical Society Alliance, and a member of the Wyomissing Hills Citizens Social Committee. When she is not volunteering in her community, Jody enjoys traveling, cooking and reading.

A bit over a decade ago, our family was looking for a new adventure. So we packed up our four small kids and horde of pets and moved halfway across the country, from Dallas, Texas to Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. Why did we do this? It’s hard to explain. We didn’t know a single person in the area. We knew nothing about the town (or borough as we later learned). We had never even heard of a Wawa. But after visiting the area while evaluating a job opportunity for my husband, we immediately fell in love with Wyomissing’s unmistakable charm and knew it was the perfect place to raise our family.
Our oldest daughter, Vivian, is now a senior in high school, and her siblings, Meredith, Charles and Veronica are not far behind. As they have grown, we have been incredibly impressed by the quality of teachers and educational opportunities they have received in Wyomissing and are thrilled to support our exceptional school district through WAEF.
After volunteering extensively in the Dallas Public Schools PTA, I knew how important it was for a school to receive additional funding and support from the community. Soon after moving here, I was introduced to WAEF by a good friend and encouraged to get involved by joining the Board of Directors. Over the past four years, I’ve served on and co-chaired various committees including Finance, Toast, the WAEF Student
Committee and Grants & Scholarships. Through these various positions, I have been able to see first-hand how WAEF is able to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives by distributing much needed funds to further their educational endeavors.
I’m incredibly proud to be a part of the Wyomissing Area community that so generously donates to this foundation, for the Wyomissing Area teachers that take time from their busy schedules to complete grant requests for innovative and curriculum enhancing projects for our students, and for our incredibly gifted, motivated and well-rounded students who receive over $40k of scholarships from WAEF each year to continue their educational pursuits after graduation.
