Wyndham’s year in review

Almost 1500 new businesses opened, 80 kilometres of new roads built, and more than 10,000 planning applications received. These are just some of the highlights of the work done by Council in 2017/18 financial year and outlined in our new Annual Report.

Western Melbourne Group is now one of only six bids shortlisted to receive one of two new licenses from FFA to join the Hyundai A-League competition.

The bid includes a major sports precinct for Tarneit, with support from Wyndham City. The multi-million dollar precinct will include a state-of-the-art 15,000 seat football stadium, elite training pitches, sports medicine facilities and a gymnasium, with residential and commercial development also planned for the surrounding area.

For the first time the Annual Report has been transformed into an interactive online version, making it easier for residents to access.

The Annual Report 2017/18 outlines Council’s key achievements in the delivery of infrastructure and services for our diverse community over the last financial year, including the completion of $93.2 million of capital works to improve local roads, footpaths, community facilities, parks and playgrounds.

The dream to bring an A-League team to Wyndham is one step closer to becoming reality after Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced Wyndham had been placed on the short list of bids.

ANNUAL PLAN & BUDGET 2019/20 Wyndham City is in the early stages of planning for the 2019/20 Annual Plan and Budget.

In developing the Annual Plan and Budget, Council needs to consider the allocation of funds to a wide range of services, programs and infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing and diverse community.

To help develop the draft plan, Council is asking you to share your ideas to better understand the community’s priorities for the upcoming 2019/20 financial year. Online consultation is open until 14 December.

IT’S EASY BEING GREEN! Wyndham City’s Green Living Series is back with almost 40 free community environmental events.

Held over February and March 2019, the event will include a wide range of activities to get inspiration and tips for living a greener and more sustainable life.

It runs at various venues across the municipality and will include a variety of sustainable living workshops, inspiring speakers, movies and excursions.

From seaweed foraging to cheese making workshops, there will be something for everyone.

Better planning for City Centre Parking If you regularly use the Werribee City Centre’s newest parking lot, you may have noticed some new additions.

Wyndham City has recently installed an innovative system that will collect data on parking trends at the Westend Car Park – formerly Werribee Toyota, situated on the corner of Watton and Werribee Streets.

The new parking system uses a series of small cameras and sensors to determine how people are utilising the parking spaces and send this information back to Council.

Council can then use this information to manage the competing parking needs of local workers, traders, shoppers, students and visitors, making it easier for you to find a parking space next time you visit the Werribee City Centre.

While this project is currently in the pilot stages, we hope to be able to expand it in the future so that we can provide better parking solutions throughout Wyndham.

UPGRADING YOUR local parks

We’re upgrading 200 local parks throughout Wyndham by 2021, making them more accessible, safe, comfortable and welcoming to everyone.

Over the next three years the $3.2 million Wyndham Parks 2021 Project will see the majority of parks in every corner of Wyndham upgraded with more trees, improved gardens and picnic facilities and better pathways and fences.

The project has already seen a total of 61 new park benches and 15 drink fountains installed, 15 Powercor boxes painted with lively artworks, seven playgrounds upgraded, and more than 10,000 new plants and 1000 new trees planted.

With work already well and truly underway, you may have already noticed some exciting changes at your local park.

Here’s just some of what we’ve already done: TYRONE STREET RECREATIONAL RESERVE, WERRIBEE Entire playspace upgraded, new bench seating, new footpath, nature play space installed.

ALSACE AVENUE WALKWAY, HOPPERS CROSSING New habitat garden, new bench seating, new trees, new footpath.

DROP OFF YOUR GREEN WASTE FOR HALF PRICE

Wyndham residents will now receive a 50% discount when they drop off their green waste at the Werribee Transfer Station.

Under the price changes a car or station wagon will now cost only $15.50 to deposit and Council is also offering major discounts on compost bins and worm farms. Trailer loads of green waste have also been reduced to half price.

Organic waste makes up almost half of the rubbish in residential bins, so it’s hoped that halving the cost will encourage more residents to take advantage of these options.

CR PETER MAYNARD Sports Development This portfolio oversees the construction of new sporting facilities and the redevelopment of existing ones. It is responsible for promoting active lifestyle choices in Wyndham and supporting new and emerging sports.

Cr Maynard said it was an exciting time for sports in Wyndham.

“Wyndham residents have always loved their sport. With our population growing this has put has lot of pressure on our local sporting facilities, with many more needed to ensure people have access to their favourite sports or are able to keep active.”

“While much more work is needed in this area, Council has been working hard and kicking goals throughout Wyndham.

Recently we unveiled the $11.75 million redevelopment of Chirnside Park, which was a real highlight for me.”

“We’re building more spaces throughout Wyndham that will allow people of all ages to be active. In October we launched our first ever senior’s exercise park at the Central Park Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing. This facility has specialised equipment tailored for older people, that helps them get moving.”

“We’ve also launched the Gender Equity in Wyndham Sport project, funded by Sports and Recreation Victoria, which assists clubs to be more inclusive so that more women can be involved at all levels, including as coaches, players, referees, volunteers and fans.”

“I’m excited to see even more happen in this space and continue the hard work so more people can experience the joys of an active lifestyle.”

CR KIM MCALINEY Safer Communities The Safer Communities portfolio focuses on the safety of Wyndham residents, working with external organisations like Victoria Police, Crime Stoppers, Neighbourhood Watch and the CFA to explore and improve perceptions of safety across Wyndham.

“My portfolio involves working closely with law enforcement and emergency services organisations. Regular meetings with Victoria Police, Crime Stoppers and Neighbourhood Watch give me an opportunity to share the concerns and opinions of Wyndham residents directly with these agencies.”

“Recently we hosted an appreciation dinner for local emergency service workers and volunteers.

It was a great opportunity to recognise the tireless work they do to keep our entire community safe.”

“We’re also in the process of developing our Gender Equity Policy Statement, which will help Council foster positive community outcomes and improve the health, wellbeing, safety and lives of Wyndham residents.”

“We know that issues like family violence are a major concern in Wyndham, which is why this policy statement and our advocacy for an integrated service hub at the future Wyndham Justice Precinct are so important.”

Laureate Professor Peter Doherty AC was the keynote speaker at the seventh annual Barry Jones Oration, one of the most significant events on Wyndham City’s business calendar.

Held at The Refectory, Werribee Park, guests were inspired by the Nobel Prize winner, veterinary surgeon and medical researcher.
