$28m Catherine McAuley Centre opens Werribee Mercy Hospital recently unveiled its new state-of-the-art rehabilitation and geriatric medicine service in the New West region, the latest addition to the growing medical precinct in the East Werribee Employment Precinct. Victorian Minister for Health and Ageing David Davis opened the $28m Catherine McAuley Centre in February 2014, named in honour of the Sisters of Mercy’s Foundress.

The Catherine McAuley Centre offers an interdisciplinary rehabilitation service to people of all ages, including those with disabilities, who are terminally ill or recovering from traumatic injury, as well as counselling and support for families or other carers. Home and centre-based rehabilitation will be delivered for patients through the centre’s Hospital Independence Program.

Featuring a subacute rehabilitation ward and geriatric evaluation management (GEM) unit, the two-storey building is arranged around a central courtyard, and includes specialist consulting facilities for rehabilitation patients, a state-of-the-art gym and a mobility garden in the community rehabilitation centre. Inpatient beds are located on the 1st floor and include 30 multi-day beds, eight two-bed rooms and 14 single-bed rooms for patients. The Catherine McAuley Centre will deliver extra rehabilitation services to the region under one roof and

is expected to raise the level of patient care in the area for decades to come. Funded by the Commonwealth’s National Partnership Agreement, the Catherine McAuley Centre will serve residents from Wyndham, Melton and Hobson’s Bay providing much needed services to Melbourne’s west.

Werribee Mercy Hospital’s future expansion plans include a $34.7m mental health facility scheduled for completion in 2016. The mental health facility will add 50 adult inpatient mental health beds including 10 high dependency unit beds and an additional four psychiatric assessment and planning unit beds. Funding for the new mental health unit is provided through the State Government.

The Catherine McAuley Centre joins a growing number of health facilities in East Werribee including the recently completed Wyndham Clinic Private Hospital (featured in edition 5 of Werribee City Scene), Victoria University’s Inter-Professional Health Clinic currently under construction (featured in edition 4 of Werribee City Scene) and the Wyndham Private Medical Centre (covered in edition 2 of Werribee City Scene). These facilities are part of the State Government’s plans to make East Werribee a premier health precinct serving Melbourne’s west.

Deakin and The Gordon’s new Werribee Learning Centre Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander officially opened the Werribee Learning Centre alongside The Gordon’s CEO Lisa Line on 11 March 2014. Located in the heart of the Werribee City Centre, the Werribee Learning Centre offers a combination of classroom-based learning and online tutorials featuring advanced IT infrastructure in a stylish and comfortable space.

The Werribee Learning Centre is an innovative partnership which leverages off the 40 year relationship between Deakin University and The Gordon.

The Learning Centre offers certificate, diploma and bachelor level courses in Commerce and Early Childhood Education, as well as an associate degree in Arts, Business and Science, along with construction-related courses. Enrolments are now open to begin studying the first year of the Commerce Degree in July.

Certificate and diploma courses delivered by The Gordon will primarily be available in the classroom with tutor facilitated learning. Bachelor’s degrees will be delivered by Deakin University where students will have a combination of inclass (with tutors) and cloud (online) learning.

Büro architects have designed an eye-catching and inviting space that includes a shopfront for accessing resources and information; student lounge spaces; and two flexible learning spaces catering for lectures, round table discussions and small group activities, which can be opened up to comprise one larger teaching or function space. Each of these rooms is equipped with state-of-the-art IT and audio-visual equipment that enables connection to remote teaching centres. This feature allows students to engage with classes and staff without having to travel long distances.

Designed to be a welcoming space for the local community, the centre is also available to the public for meetings and functions. Small rooms and larger spaces are available for hire by the hour, the day or into the evening.

Railway Level Crossings Opus has been appointed to undertake the Wyndham Grade Separation Prioritisation Study that will look at how to improve the level crossings in Wyndham.

East Werribee Gateway Site The first development site within the new East Werribee precinct was advertised for sale by Savills on 7 May 2014.

The ‘East Werribee Gateway Site’ is located on the corner of Princes Highway and Hoppers Lane, Werribee. The site consists of two large land parcels of 9.5 hectares and 4.1 hectares which are being offered for sale separately. Werribee City Centre Commercial Property Advisor NAVIRE has been appointed as Commercial Property Advisor to produce and implement a strategy for the development of key sites owned by Wyndham City Council.

East Werribee Infrastructure Works Planning and design work is continuing on infrastructure projects in East Werribee including the new Princes Freeway interchange at Sneydes Road. Café Vignola Café Vignola’s velvety coffee is a welcome addition to Werribee’s cafe culture in Watton Street.

Established in December 2012, Café Vignola has built up a widespread following from Wyndham residents travelling as far as Point Cook to taste the platinum selection blend developed by owner Mario Coletta.

Coletta is an Italian Master Espresso Maker and coffee expert who studied at a dedicated coffee university in Trieste Italy. He is also a qualified gelati ice cream maker. Prior to opening Café Vignola in Werribee, Coletta established a café in a historic town in Italy called Norcia, naming his café after the architect of the 1400 year old fortress la Castellina, featured in the Café Vignola logo.

In Australia since 2003, Coletta worked at renowned Melbourne café Brunetti for eight years as manager of coffee making and barista training

across all Brunetti cafes, establishing franchises in Dubai and Singapore. A local resident since arriving in Australia, Werribee was an obvious choice for Coletta to start his own business.

In the Werribee City Centre, December has come to mean a celebration of creativity through RED. This project places temporary art into urban space, with the festive season providing a context to explore both the contemporary and whimsical sides of public art practices.

RED evolved from a conversation with the Werribee Chamber of Commerce about the activation of public space – how could artists be involved in creating a celebratory atmosphere? In 2012 RED was born and in 2013 the project has grown with more ambitious artworks in Watton Street, Wedge Street Piazza, Station Place and adjoining laneways.

Deakin University and The Gordon’s recent launch of the Werribee Learning Centre expands the worldclass education offer in Werribee and provides pathways from school through TAFE and on to university. We spoke to Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander about Deakin’s commitment to increasing access to quality higher education opportunities in Melbourne’s west and why Werribee was chosen for the new Learning Centre.

I provide the leadership that will enable Deakin graduates and staff to achieve lifelong success.

We educate in a problem-based environment, so you must be able to solve problems, make things happen and get the very best out of people.

The partnership between Deakin University and The Gordon offer pathways from TAFE to university. Can you tell us why you think this is important?

I think we need a continuous path from primary to secondary school to TAFE and University. Each of us has different needs, some will choose to do a degree and others will choose a TAFE course. Our job is to make sure that all of our students choose what suits their needs most.

Why did Deakin University and The Gordon choose to locate the new Learning Centre in Werribee?

The number of students enrolling in university in Melbourne’s south-west has risen 30% over the past two years. With the population continuing to grow, we need to respond and provide further educational opportunities in the area.

What are some of the advantages Werribee’s location offers to your students?

The Learning Centre is close to Werribee’s train station and bus terminal, which provides easy access to Deakin’s Geelong and Warrnambool campuses and The Gordon’s Geelong campus. The easy access to the Learning Centre may be just the thing to assist future students to get started in a course of their choice.
