DOLBY FIDELIO WIRELESS AUDIO SYSTEM

(A WIRELESS DEVICE FOR THE HEARING & VISUALLY IMPAIRED) We’re VERY excited to announce that we have installed a brand new - top of the range - Fidelio Audio System into both of our auditoriums! Our new system is able to deliver descriptive narration for the visually impaired and amplified sound for the hearing impaired for film screenings, satellite broadcasts, and select live events. All you have to do is collect a compact audio receiver from our Box Office and plug in a set of headphones. We do have a number of headphone sets available, but feel free to bring in your own if you prefer – the audio devices accept a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. This new installation was kindly financed through a grant from Powys County Council, which was generously match-funded by the Friends of Wyeside. Thank you very much to all of our friends, whose monthly donations help to secure Wyeside for generations to come.

As their trunk of original and traditional tunes and songs started to fill up, the trio put them to tape and took to the road. The result is The East Pointers, who released their debut album ‘Sweet Victory’ in 2015 and have been touring the world almost constantly since. In early 2017 they won a JUNO Award for best roots album in Canada for ‘Sweet Victory’. Their new album will be released in autumn 2017. * Credit/Debit Card Charge - 50p per transaction

A CRAWL DOWN THE OGRE a talk by Doug Scott CBE Fri 3 November: 7.30pm £13.50 Full (£12 Concession)* Whilst the highpoint of Doug Scott’s mountaineering collaboration with Chris Bonington was the first ascent of Everest by its enormous SW Face, their greatest adventure was undoubtedly on The Ogre, two years later in July 1977. Doug and Chris made the first ascent after very difficult rock climbing that extended the boundaries of what had ever been achieved at that altitude. The subsequent descent in the dark immediately became an epic. Doug broke both legs just above the ankles. A storm blew in lasting five days, during which time Chris smashed his ribs and contracted pneumonia. It took eight hard days to reach Base Camp. It was 24 years before The Ogre was ever climbed again...

Proceeds from the talk will support reconstruction of Community Action Nepal’s projects in Nepal. * Credit/Debit Card Charge 50p per transaction

Chris is supported by Scottish duo Twelfth Day, AKA Catriona Price and Esther Swift, whose new album “Cracks In The Room” has been produced by Chris Wood and mixed in the USA by legendary engineer Oz Fritz. * Credit/Debit Card Charge - 50p per transaction

Introduced by arts presenter Andrew Graham-Dixon, and featuring artists David Hockney, Grayson Perry and Maggi Hambling, this is the first UK biography of Japan’s greatest artist. When she follows him down a rabbit hole, events become curiouser and curiouser… Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive, sophisticated choreography. Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative, eye-popping designs draw on everything from puppetry to projections to make Wonderland wonderfully real. The Royal Ballet at its best, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment.

No artist better captures the essence and allure of Venice than Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. Despite Canaletto’s close relationship with the city in which he lived and died, the world’s largest collection of his works resides not in his native Italy, but in Britain as part of the Royal Collection. In 1762, George III purchased almost the entire collection amassed by Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice and Canaletto’s principal agent. The film offers the chance to step inside two official royal residences Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle – to learn more about the artist, and Joseph Smith, the man who introduced Canaletto to Britain.

TOSCA

by Giuseppe Verdi Opera in three acts Sung in Italian (with Subtitles) LIVE Tue 16 January: 7.15pm £17 Full (£15 Concession)*

by Giacomo Puccini Opera in three acts Sung in Italian (with Subtitles) LIVE Wed 7 February: 7.15pm £17 Full (£15 Concession)*

Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect…

Tosca is one of the great evenings of opera, and from its strident opening chords conjures up a world of political instability and menace. Jonathan Kent’s production captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800.The Chief of Police, Scarpia, ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. Giacomo Puccini’s dramatic work was a hit with audiences on its 1900 premiere and it remains one of the most performed of all operas – with its gripping plot and glorious music, it’s easy to see why.

Giuseppe Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto was his ‘best opera’. He had had to overcome state censorship to stage it – the censors objected to its depiction of an immoral ruler – but he was vindicated by the premiere’s huge success in 1851. Rigoletto was performed 250 times in the next 10 years and has remained one of the most popular of all operas.

It examines the mysterious story of the fatally wounded, gaunt man who stumbled down a drowsy high street at twilight in the small French country town of Auvers in July 1890.. a man who was to become the most famous artist in the world.

Wyeside is an independent not-for-profit charity - so every penny we make goes straight back into our programme. We couldn’t manage without our funders - and the fantastic help and support we get from our incredibly loyal band of Friends and Volunteers. Thank you all!

FRIENDS OF WYESIDE The Friends’ subscriptions provide additional funding for special projects. In the past these have included match funding for recent major improvements to the arts centre building and facilities, including the refurbishment of the Market Theatre and Gallery, the installation of digital projection equipment, the new artists’ space, Window on the Wye, and repairs and renovations to the stonework of the historic building. Donate from £5 per month (£60 per year), or whatever you would like to give! What are the Benefits? Apart from playing a vital role in our future, Friends organise special events, receive quarterly newsletters from Wyeside, are entered into a monthly draw for free tickets, and will receive the brochure hot off the press! How do I join? If you would like to become a Friend of Wyeside either pop in and pick up a form from the box office, download one from our website, or request one from Miriam Hall by calling 01982 553668, or by emailing marketing@wyeside.co.uk.

VOLUNTEERS Wyeside’s volunteers play a vital role in our continuing success. They help us in myriad ways - stewarding for live events and films, working on our bars, or helping our publicity efforts. We give training to develop your skills and CV. You get to see live events and films free, and the chance to work with Wyeside’s friendly team as we present 1000+ shows every year. If you are 16 or over and want to get involved, please call our volunteer coordinator Owen Lawrence on 01982 553668, or email him at owen@wyeside.co.uk. Or pick up an application form at the box office, or download one from our website. Please remember to include full contact details - your address, telephone number and e-mail address - and tell us about any particular skills or expertise you can offer to help keep Wyeside growing!

The cousins Chaisson are part of the sixth generation of heralded fiddlers from Prince Edward Island. When Jake visited the island a Canadian late-night kitchen party was sure to follow with fiddles and friends, guitars, Guinness and banjos.

Thank you very much to all of our friends, whose monthly donations help to secure Wyeside for generations to come.

THE EAST POINTERS Sat 14 October: 7.30pm £14 Full (£13 Concession)* Hailing from Canada’s Prince Edward Island, The East Pointers feature banjoist/vocalist/step-dancer Koady Chaisson, fiddle player/vocalist Tim Chaisson, and guitarist/vocalist Jake Charron.

Make sure you bring your danc THIS P ing shoes E IS WIT RFORMAN , C H SEATIN CABARET E DANC G – AND A E FLO OR!

The cousins Chaisson are part of the sixth generation of heralded fiddlers from Prince Edward Island. When Jake visited the island a Canadian late-night kitchen party was sure to follow with fiddles and friends, guitars, Guinness and banjos.
