Dangerous desires, family secrets and political intrigues twist through every moment of daring choreography in Kenneth MacMillan’s ballet inspired by true events. Mayerling is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertory, with its emotional depth, haunting imagery, and one of the most demanding roles ever created for a male dancer. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed a complex work around the psychologically tormented heir to the Habsburg Empire, Crown Prince Rudolf. From the ballet’s start, the glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court is contrasted with undercurrents of sexual and political intrigue that drive the story to its violent climax in a double suicide. The large cast allows for impressive ensembles in addition to the ballet’s many solos of distinctive character and pas de deux of disturbing eroticism. This ballet, bursting with intensity, madness and passion, proves that sometimes the truth is more scandalous than fiction.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN journeys from the streets of Paris to the heart of a superb exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, whose extensive collection of Degas’ works is the most representative in Britain. With exclusive access to view rare and diverse works, this film tells a fascinating story of Degas’ pursuit for perfection through both experimentation with new techniques and lessons learnt from studying the past masters. Sometimes frustrated by his own failings, Degas was consumed by obsessive principles and failing eye sight but his determination to capture everyday life was evident in every mark he made. Never fully satisfied, many of Degas’ drawings and sculptures were kept in private during his lifetime but, now through close examination, they can be seen as some of the most beautifully detailed and expressive works in the modern era. Using written accounts by friends and commentators, and the narration of letters written by Degas himself, this film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists of the late 19th-century and serves as an exploration of the complex workings of Degas’ artistic mind.

BOX OFFICE OPENING TIMES Our answerphone service is available when the Box Office is closed or busy. Tuesday to Friday: 5pm – 9pm Saturday & Sunday: 2pm – 9pm

HOW TO BUY TICKETS ONLINE 24/7 at www.wyeside.co.uk BY PHONE on 01982 552555 IN PERSON at the Box Office Sorry - we can no longer accept reservations. All ticket orders must be paid for when you book. Latecomers may be asked to wait for a suitable point in the performance.

CONCESSIONS Satellite Live! & Live shows: We offer concession prices to under 18s, over 65s, students, disabled and unwaged customers. Film screenings: We can now only offer concessions to under-16s. Proof of age/status may be required. Support workers accompanying disabled customers can attend all Wyeside events free.

GROUP BOOKINGS We offer tailored rates for parties from schools and other organisations for selected shows only - please contact the Box Office on 01982 552555 beforehand.

PROGRAMME CHANGES Times/prices are correct at the time of going to press, but are sometimes subject to changes beyond our control. If you’ve bought tickets in advance, we will make every effort to let you know if any details change using the contact details you gave us when you booked. But - especially if you’re making a long journey - we advise you to check (with our Box Office, or on our website).

ACCESS Wyeside offers lift access to all areas, as well as an accessible toilet. Reserved disabled parking is available on our forecourt, and wheelchair spaces are available in both auditoriums. All disabled seating is allocated on a first-come first-serve basis as these facilities are limited due to the restricted nature of our Grade 2 listed building. To guarantee admittance we strongly recommend booking in advance via our Box Office on 01982 552555. Unfortunately wheelchair spaces are not bookable online at this time. Guide dogs are welcome.

REFUNDS & EXCHANGES If you’ve bought tickets for a Wyeside event but find you can’t make it, we can exchange them for an alternative date or refund the value (less a £2 admin fee) of the ticket via a credit note – but only if contacted at least 5 days before the event.

WE ARE GRATEFUL TO THE FOLLOWING ORGANISATIONS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION AND SUPPORT:

WYESIDE PATRONS We are grateful to the following for their continued support: Eve Best, Phil Bowen, Tom Bullough, Wendy Evans, Julian Gibson-Watt, The Lord Lipsey, Cllr. David Price, John Walker.

Wyeside Arts Centre Ltd. Registered Charity No. 505656

HOW TO FIND US Wyeside stands prominently on the end of Builth Wells’ famous Wye river bridge, opposite the Llewellyn mural. The centre is only 100 metres walk from the Groe public car park, which is free from 6pm. When you leave the car park, turn left, walk past the Builth bull statue and Wyeside is facing you at the top of the rise.
