News from Talgarth

by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I pull together my thoughts for this month’s column, the lambs in the fields all around are enjoying the sun on their backs and the sub zero temperatures of Easter seem an age away. However, the legacy of the late snow and frost for many Welsh farmers will continue for a long time, with grass still in very short supply and feed concentrates scarce in some parts. The announcement by Alun Davies, the newly appointed Minister for Natural Resources and Food, of a £500,000 donation to a number of farm support and rural charities is welcome – but this will only go so far in addressing what has been a disastrous period for the industry. Our immediate area did not suffer the worst brunt of the weather – but business margins remain tight – farmers’ resilience will be tested more than ever.

On a more positive note, it is really heartening to see evidence recently of a higher level of optimism and business confidence here in Talgarth. Last month, we had the news that young businessman Glen Ellis of Rotters’ Micro Brewery at The Tower Hotel had received a double accolade from CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. CAMRA awarded The Tower their Gold Award for Cider Pub of the Year for Brecknockshire as well as overall Bronze Award winning Pub of the Year. It is hugely encouraging to see such a key town centre business thriving on innovation and sheer hard work and my congratulations go to Glen and his family. Similarly, customers at WJ George will have seen with their own eyes over recent weeks the new business venture that is taking shape on the premises. Talgarth’s longest standing family business is literally expanding into new territory, with the development of its own delicatessen next door to the butchers shop. I was delighted to accompany Dai Davies, Special Advisor to Welsh Business Minister Edwina Hart, on a recent visit, hosted by Bryan and Chris George. Dai was really impressed

by what he saw, which he felt was very encouraging for the wider local economy. My colleague Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, Chair of the Assembly’s Environment and Sustainability Committee and former Assembly Presiding Officer, is very much looking forward to being present at the official opening of the new venture later in the spring.

I hope to see many of you around at community events in the coming weeks. The inaugural Talgarth Walking Festival which is featured elsewhere in this edition of Wye Local is a very exciting initiative and will be the culmination of a lot of commitment and hard work by Talgarth Walkers are Welcome, involving collaboration with a range of businesses and local groups. Once again, we are at our best when we work together to achieve shared objectives. Increasingly these days, Talgarth’s glorious natural environment is being discovered and it is right that our local economy should reap some of the benefits from this, as we aim to make the town an even better place for visitors and locals alike.

In the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@wales.gov.uk Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 3rd May from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre. Appointments are not essential – but advanced notice may be useful if the issues you wish to raise are complex. You can also pop into the TiRC to request a call from me on any issue which may be troubling you. Best Wishes William

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury

At the time of going to print it really looks as if Spring has at last arrived. What a dreadful time it has been, especially for those in the farming community with such difficult conditions over the lambing period.

This last month has been ‘motor’ based with 4x4’s driving on our green lanes causing big problems to our residents. I have also mentioned previously how both Glasbury and Gwernyfed Community Councils have come together to try and get the speed limit reduced in the residential areas either side of Glasbury Bridge. You may have seen ‘tester strips’ on the roads in the Glasbury area – so things are progressing! At least the new cattle grids that we had ordered have now been fitted in the Painscastle area.

I sat on the interview panel to find a new tenant for a County Farm that had recently become available in this area. These holdings originated after the 1st World War and for very good reason. Nearly 100 years later they are still available to encourage new entrants into farming. The four candidates that were interviewed can only be described as outstanding and give

enormous confidence to those thinking that the young are no longer looking to progress in agriculture. We look forward to welcoming the Price family to Cwmbach in May and I have no doubt that the three other applicants will all be running their own farms very soon.

True community spirit has again been shown with the story of local Gwernyfed School girl Naina Dickens-Chauhan. I found out about her fundraising appeal by hearing that my neighbour Mrs Mandy Mills had offered via Facebook to bake a cake for anyone who would buy one with all the proceeds going to this great cause. Well done to Mandy on baking so many cakes that over £1000 has been raised by her efforts. The Black Mountain Lions have given £2000 and there are many fundraising events planned. Well done everyone and let us hope that Naina will have reached her £30,000 target and be fitted with her new leg very soon. Best wishes, Chris (07855 752110 or cllr.chris.davies@powys.gov.uk)

The Plant Shop Exceptional Garden Plants & Gifts

Due to my other commitments, I have had to make a decision about the way that The Plant Shop trades; so, my plants will be available outside the Café at Talgarth Mill on a permanent basis, at Talgarth Country Market on the first Sunday of every month, and at various NGS events. I will also continue to offer advice, planning and plants on an individual basis. My heartfelt thanks go especially to Monica, Di, Iris and Edgar, and to all who have supported me since I took the business over from Jackie and Fiona. Gardening has certainly been challenging for us over the past couple of years, but I hope that we will all continue to enjoy the pleasure it brings when things go well!

News from

Glasbury Get-Together Club

As you read this, I hope Spring has arrived at last, after the record breaking winter.

I received a call from Ann Tate at the Spaceguard Centre, formerly the Powys County Observatory near Knighton who is booked to visit on the 17th April. Because of the vast amount of snow that was still around she was concerned about access for the coach, and the forecast wasn’t good. We’ll let you know next month! At our March meeting, although it was still bitterly cold, plenty of our members and several visitors came to hear a facinating talk by Julian Gibson -Watt about his famous eighteeth century ancestor James Watt. Julian is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about James Watt and his family. James Watt was a mechanical engineer and brilliant inventor, supported and encouraged by a well known industrialist called Bolton. They later became partners. James Watt was particularly interested in the use of steam as energy and eventually managed to invent the steam engine, which had a far reaching effect on the Industrial Revolution. He invented several other things including

MAYALL JEWELLERS Clocks Watches Clogau Gold Jewellery Silverware

the first document copying machine which needed special ink. Julian was happy to answer questions from the audience who were very grateful to him for coming to talk to us and making it a very enjoyable and informative afternoon. Our next club meeting will be on May 22nd, 2.30p.m at Glasbury Village Hall. Please check posters locally for details of speaker etc. Raffle & Tea as usual. If you are interested in the trip to Abergavenny and Penpergwmn Gardens on the 14th May (please note this is a Tuesday) leaving at 10.00 a.m from Glasbury Village Hall, please book now. Looking ahead to June, a trip to Abbeydore Herefordshire. Abbey and Gardens and Kilpeck church June 18th again (please note this is a Tuesday) leaving at 10.00a.m from Glasbury Village Hall. New members welcome. Further details ring: Gloria 01497 847726, Geraldine - 01497 847697, Bob 01497 842900.

News from Haygarth Medical Centre Back pain? Neck pain? Niggling joint pain?

Do you feel that you could benefit from physiotherapy but haven't had the chance to see your doctor to be referred yet?

Panic not! Powys teaching Health Board is now running a new physiotherapy self referral scheme, based in the Bronllys physiotherapy department. So, if you are registered with Hay and Talgarth doctors' surgeries, go into your local surgery and pick up a self referral form. You fill in a few questions about your general health and details of your problem and post or drop it in to the Bronllys physiotherapy department. Your form will be assessed by a physiotherapist, and, if your referral is suitable, you will be sent a letter asking you to call and make an appointment.

This scheme allows you to be in control of your condition, and gain the help you need without having to wait for an appointment with your GP first. It also allows you an easy route back in to the

physiotherapy service if you have a reoccurrence after you have been discharged. So, be proactive, grab a form next time you're in the doctors' surgery and start the journey towards a more body aware, less painful life.

Unfortunately, this service is not suitable for those under the age of 16, or if you have a neurological, breathing or gynaecological condition. If your referral is not found to be suitable, or the physiotherapist feels you would benefit from a visit to your GP first, you will be contacted and advised about what steps to take.

News from Hay Town Council

Last May’s elections to elect a council for the next four years took place at a time of great controversy in the town. This concerned plans to build a new school on Forest Road and put a supermarket on the present site. Candidates stood and were elected at least in part on where they stood on this issue. Following the elections I was elected Mayor and was concerned how this new group of ten would gel as a team.

My concerns have, from the beginning been unfounded. There has been a lot of work to ensure we use everyone’s talents and strengths to improve the town. This hard work has gone on all year, moving forward the many projects we feel will benefit Hay; projects like the Gliss Project which has improved access to the river, affordable housing, the issue of dog fouling and many more. The council has also been involved in some wonderful community events, the Jubilee celebrations, the reception to celebrate Josie’s

Olympic gold, the senior citizens’ Christmas party and the turning on of the Christmas lights when the world and his wife turned out to again see Josie. All events made special by the support of the people of Hay.

We hold monthly meetings which can be very interesting. Councillors want to be heard and occasionally the meetings have become heated, Sometimes it is a challenge to insist on everyone’s views getting an equal chance. In the midst of all this seriousness, however, meetings have also been fun, with quick fire banter and sharp witty retorts. Our meetings are open the public. Come along and see what happens. At the end of this month my term of office finishes and a new mayor will be elected. I hope they enjoy their time as much as I did. Best wishes,

Janette Hill & Co. Solicitors The Piece of Cake has now shrunk

As we wrote in a previous article, the government has now introduced changes to the amount that victims of road traffic accidents will be paid in compensation for their injuries. This came into effect on April 1st 2013.

In effect, the changes mean that if you are the victim of a road traffic accident then you will not keep all of the damages payments you may receive, but will have to pay a contribution towards the costs of the matter. For many victims, this will increase the hardship they have suffered as a result of something that occurred through no fault of their own. From the 1st April if you are involved in an accident you have to pay a contribution towards the cost of claiming. You will no longer be able to obtain and retain the damages you were once entitled to.

One of the factors behind all this is the Insurance industry, which has pressed for a reduction in the level of costs they have to pay towards the costs incurred by victims through no fault of their own. If you or someone you know has suffered an accident that resulted in an injury which seems to be no fault of their own, then you should seek legal advice to determine whether you could claim for compensation. Janette Hill and Co is a legal firm based in Hay on Wye who specialise in personal injury cases. For more information, see www.janettehill.co.uk

News from Timbuktu

At the time of writing, we are hearing more concerning news from Northern Mali. Guerilla attacks, food shortages, and appalling conditions in refugees camps have all been in the news.

Here in Hay, the Medics group organised a sponsored cycle at Hay Bike Fest. Cyclists enjoyed their ride to the Toll Bridge at Whitney where they were given a drink and snacks courtesy of the Co-op, and were given a warm welcome from the Toll Bridge Owners. The money raised will help maternal health projects and emergency medication in Timbuktu.

A new project, Two Wheels, was launched at the Bike Fest with funding from Two Towns One World. The project will encourage local people to join in with a weekly cycle ride, and aims to link up with Timbuktu’s other twin town of Saintes in France. Anyone interested can find details on the H2T or Drover Cycles websites.

Hay Parish Hall on Sunday 26 May, 10 – 4.There will be stalls, kids craft workshops, tasty food and Ethiopian coffee. Any funds raised will support our maternal health project in Timbuktu.

A talented young musician, Matthew Lewis, has written a song inspired by Timbuktu. He is producing a CD with help from Hay’s Community Choir, and a sleeve designed by school pupils. Profits from CD or download sales will go to Hay2Timbuktu. Check our website for details of how to purchase it. The next Timbuktu Forum takes place on 8th May, 7pm at the Swan. All welcome.

To keep up to date on news from Timbuktu visit: hay2timbuktu.org.uk.

For information on Two Towns One World, contact Anne.Hillyer twotownsoneworld@gmail.com 029 2125 1025.

May sees the launch of the Timbuktu Trail, organised by TTOW. Signs will be erected around town linking up key sites with Timbuktu, and leaflets will be available from the tourist information centre. There will be plenty of twinning related activity during the Literary Festival. We’ll be fundraising in the streets (get in touch if you’d like to volunteer!), and holding our own debate. The debate takes place on 28 May at 7pm. It’s free to attend, but you’ll need to book tickets via the Festival.

As you may have seen, the Festival have programmed some wonderful Malian performances and have kindly given Hay2Timbuktu some tickets to give away or auction. Keep an eye on our twitter feed and website for more on this. The annual African Market Day takes place at

News from Hay Cheese Market

March was a busy month. We worked with lots of different local groups to push forward on our heritage activities. We teamed up with the Rural Media Company in Hereford to run weekly film making workshops at Hay Youth Club and Llanigon Young Farmers. We plan to use the films to illustrate peoples’ recollections of Hay Market, Market Day and the May Fairs. We recorded the memories of Brin Jenkins from Hay and Nita Jones from Llanigon. They shared some great stories, which the young people will now bring alive to give an insight into how life used to be over two generations ago. The Hay History Group is now formally constituted with lots of ideas and energy for future projects. The most exciting of which will be the first Hay History Weekend, planned for 78 September 2013. Activities will include a family history quiz about Hay, historical guided walks around Hay, film screenings and a pop up

museum. Our next meeting will be held upstairs at the Three Tuns on Wednesday 24th April, 8pm. All welcome.

If you would like to find out more about the Cheese Market Project, please visit our information stand at Fair on the Square over the Bank Holiday weekend 25, 26, 27 May. We will be located inside the Cheese Market Hall, along with a team from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

You can also meet us at the Hay Festival on 30th May when we join forces with architectural historian Julian Orbach to present a talk on Market Halls and the Cheese Market. Tickets £5, are available from the Hay Festival Box Office.

Local Talent: Crispin Thornton Jones What would you class as your masterpiece? I've painted over 2000 pictures so choosing one is difficult. Probably 'Under the Mountain' is what I am about

Wilfred's Yard

Have you any future plans for your work? I'm hoping my best work is still to come

Artist Name? Crispin Thornton Jones

Type of Artist? Figurative landscape and portrait artist in oils Range of Products? Limited edition prints and oil paintings

Where can your products be purchased? Directly from me via my website crispinthorntonjones.com

Price range? Prints from ÂŁ100 and paintings from ÂŁ1000

How long have you been been an artist? I've always drawn and painted so since about 4 years old I guess

What advice would you give a local artist? Keep believing your work is relevant and always put the tops back on your tubes What other local artists do you admire? I tend not to pay attention to what others are doing, not to say there aren't any good artists out there.

Artist statement: I've been painting the Black Mountains for nearly forty years and still find new stuff to inspire. All over the mountains are the remnants of the endeavours of past generations, well-made walls, houses and ancient pleached hedges. This landscape has remained remarkably untouched and I wish to continue to make record of this special place.

Where did you train or gain experience? I studied Graphics at the London College of Printing, followed by Fine Art & Printmaking at the Byam Shaw

What has been your proudest moment? Probably the unveiling of my portrait of Miss Pears at the Royal Academy which coincided with my first London show at Aberbach's Savile Row, and becoming a grandfather this week!

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer

I was hoping when I wrote last month's article to be able to cheer the improved weather but somehow the first half of April has let us down badly. Only in the last few days have I seen farmers out working the land and preparing for sowing and planting. We will not see any particularly early produce this year, and this is made worse by the fact that it's been unusually cold in Europe which has slowed down their produce.

This is one of the reasons that prices have gone sky high, to the point that people have stopped buying some items in the wholesale market which has helped to get some of the worst prices coming down again. Another problem is the burgeoning wealth of countries like India and China. They have entered the market for all sorts of vegetables and are paying more than we have hither to been used to. Looking on the brighter side the first English asparagus has arrived from the Chinn family just this side of Rosson-Wye. I understand that they are able to get the earliest crop as some of their beds have underground heating to start them off. This means it is not cheap but after a long winter sometimes it is good to say "hang the expense" and enjoy it.

This time last year the fruit trees were already blossoming but without any bees or other pollinators around. That was the reason for the very poor local crops. As the trees have yet to show many signs of life nature would appear to be getting back to normal, so we should have a decent crop of fruit - in fact it may be better than usual as the trees had a rest last year.

Because of some shortages broccoli has been very popular recently. How many of you cut off the finer bits and throw the thick stem away? The Victorians almost preferred the stem which they peeled and cut into chunks, par-boiled and made into a gratinee. I haven't tried myself but I think that any recipe for kohlrabi would be suitable for broccoli stems, providing another vegetable from the same source. This will be the last issue before the Hay Festival starts. Whether one likes it or not, it cannot be denied that it puts Hay well and truly on the map, and the way trade in general and tourist trade in particular are concerned that can only be to the good. I wish you all a very good Festival. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard, Castle Greengrocers.

Ameca J and the Legacy of Menindus – Paul Xavier Jones

Paul Xavier Jones is a South Wales based author of 6 books, in the Epic Fantasy and Science Fiction Thriller genres. Working as Practice Manager for local company, Janette Hill & Co. Solicitors. Paul is married with two daughters.

In his first Epic Fantasy novel, we meet Ameca and Fraya, a typical teenager and younger sister, who are unexpectedly transported to Mythrania, a world of magic, populated by savage beasts and an ancient evil.

Here the girls learn they are the legendary Heirs of Menindus, prophesised to defend Mythrania and the Universe, using magical powers they didn’t know they had – Ameca has the power of fire, and Fraya can create or heal.

Unlike other books in this genre, their father plays a role in the story, as he is also an Heir of Menindus, with the power of super speed.

The story follows the family’s journey, encounters

with the bestial servants of the Scelestus – men transformed into Were-creatures, and twisted magic users known as Dark Ones. There are also allies, in the shape of heroic men, an Elf and even a dragon.

The author has linked Celtic legends and weaved them into a tale linked to the technology of our world in a story climax that leaves the reader looking around for the next book in the series, with the strapline promise firmly in mind…

“Look out evil, here come the girls…”

The other books in the series are; Ameca J and the Revenge of Rex-Ultar & Ameca J and the Demon God of Mythrania. All available from Amazon

Readers wanting to connect to the author should visit; http://www.facebook.com/xavierbooks or http://www,paulxavierjones.co.uk

Please join us. You'll be most welcome

The line-up for Hay Festival 2013 includes a rare in-conversation event with John le CarrĂŠ. In an unprecedented doublelength interview, the creator of George Smiley and author of spy masterpieces such as The Constant Gardener and The Honourable Schoolboy makes his first visit to the festival and talks about his work to Philippe Sands. His new novel A Delicate Truth is out this spring. The festival investigates not just the work of this great spy writer, but also truth, lies and thrillers, in fiction and in the press. Carl Bernstein, the legendary journalist who broke the Watergate story for The Washington Post, discusses the second-term Obama administration, and the resonant American anniversaries of Gettysburg (150), the end of the Vietnam War (40) and JFK's assassination (50) with Peter Florence.

This year we highlight the wonderful work of libraries and begin our festival with The Hay Library Lecture, given by children's illustrator and writer Quentin Blake. Tickets are free to library card holders but please do book one in advance. The lecture takes place on the first of our Programme for Schools Days (23 and 24 May), which are free to all local schools, both primary and secondary, in England and Wales, and where pupils get to meet writers for a day of discovery at the festival.

At Hay Festival we share stories and ideas with great international writers and thinkers, filmmakers, historians and novelists, environmentalists, poets and scientists. And at night we like to party with the greatest comedians and musicians. This year's line-up

includes Miranda Hart, Alan Davies, Dara Ă“ Briain and Jo Brand, with music from the fabulous Christy Moore; KT Tunstall and Noah And The Whale both launch their new albums at Hay; and from Mali we have Amadou & Mariam, Terakaft and Rokia Traore.

Hay Festival gathers people together to think about the world and find the inspiration to re-imagine how it might be. Hay is, in Bill Clinton's phrase, 'the Woodstock of the mind'. Please join us. You'll be most welcome.

For the full programme please visit Hayfestival.org or call the box office on 01497 822 629.

As a community we CAN do it ...

"My name is Naina Dickens-Chauhan, I am thirteen years old and attend Gwernyfed High School. In many ways I am a regular teenager apart from the one thing that sets me apart, the one thing that has taken so much from me, cancer. It was the 15th of July 2012 that I was finally diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, an aggressive and rare cancer of the bone.

Towards the end of May 2012 I started to get aching pains in my right ankle, I just thought it was from P.E., which I loved. The pain didn’t go away, it started to move up my leg and intensified, Mum stopped me doing P.E. hoping this would cure it, it didn’t, and the pain got worse. Mum started having to carry me downstairs as the pain in my leg had gotten so bad I could no longer make it down them. Enough was enough, no longer able to walk properly Mum took me to Brecon Hospital where I was immediately Xrayed. The doctor noticed a problem with my Tibia, the larger and stronger bone in your leg, I was sent on to Neville Hall Hospital. I had to sleep over at Neville Hall, to have blood tests, MRI and CT scans to work out what was wrong with me, I remember feeling anxious, but optimistic. Three days after being admitted I was told the crushing news that there was a high chance of me having Osteosarcoma, I was sent to Birmingham Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, they confirmed the devastating news, I had cancer.

I would need both an operation and chemo to get rid of the tumour in my Tibia, the chemo came first. Chemo made me awfully sick, but I remained positive and I have been told I never complained. After ten weeks of Chemotherapy I had my operation at the Birmingham Orthopaedic Hospital, they took away the top of my Tibia, and some of my femur and replaced it with a silver coated knee bone. Although originally the operation was a success my leg became infected, the wound became extremely painful and would not heal, I spent Christmas 2012 in hospital fighting the infection in my leg. Even with lots of medication and great care from the hospital I was loosing the battle from infection in my leg, while having it cleaned the surgeon noticed that the muscle had lost its blood supply. I was left with only one option, the shattering news that I was going to have to have my leg amputated. I lost my right leg to cancer on January 7th 2012.

After my operation I was in a lot of pain, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the sadness I felt, my life would never be the same again. The NHS have offered me a leg, and I am grateful, however it is very restrictive and basic. Before cancer I was a keen horse rider, with my NHS leg I will never be able to sit on a horse. Before cancer I loved to swim, but I can't swim with my NHS leg. I hate to split my life into before loosing my leg and after loosing my leg, I am still the same cheerful, bright Naina, cancer won’t change that. However out there is a product that would mean I could walk with ease, climb stairs, ride a horse, have my independence and be a normal teenager. This product is a C leg, it means that I would be able to walk in the same gait as before my amputation, not possible with the clumsy and heavy NHS leg.The C leg has a technology called stumble recovery, meaning it is extremely stable and enabling me to walk on any surface, it will also allow me to walk up and down stairs. The revolutionary microprocessor that controls the C leg means that it would be as close to having my leg back as is possible, it easily adjusts to changes, from standing stably to allowing me to ride a bike."

When I (Lisa Marie) first read this I instantly had an urge to help Naina. The NHS wont fund Naina’s C leg, the tool that will give her back the independence of youth, it will cost around £28,000 to get Naina the help she needs, as a community we can raise this to help this inspirational young lady get her confidence back and enjoy living life to the full. Take a look at the fundraising page for up to date information: https://www.facebook.com/naina.fundraising

You really will be amazed how people are helping, some in small ways, some in bigger ways. But it really doesn't matter. Every bit helps to hit the target of £28,000. From head shaves to Medium readings, sponsored walks to raffles, quiz nights to cake sales, sponsored sky dive to a zumba evening ... and these are just the things planned as we go to press. One local lady from Hay has donated her Avon sale profits. Individuals have donated on PayPal. Thank you Naina for sharing your story with us, we at Wye Local (and Local Beacon) wish you all the luck and will be making our own donation. Keep us updated.

The Nantyffin Cider Mill Goes Back to the Future …

Local restauranteurs, the Taste Inn Wales Group, comprising Brecon Beacons trio Sean Gerrard, Glyn and Jess Bridgeman, have gone back in time to join forces once again with the Glanusk Estate to take over and breathe new life into the renowned eaterie, The Nantyffin Cider Mill, located just outside Crickhowell. Sean Gerrard says – ‘We’ve gone back to our roots again! Our part in the Cider Mill story started over 20 years ago and it was a huge part of our life, until we sold our interest in 2007. So when the Glanusk estate recently approached us to tell us that it was going back on the market, we felt that it was opportunity not to be missed.’ The Cider Mill was widely recognised as the area’s very first ‘gastro pub’ when the trio first took over and it was awarded a host of accolades during their 17 year tenure. The Cider mill drew both local customers as well as from much further afield, with

its passionate ethos to produce fresh, local and seasonal food, with an eclectic wine list, artisan ciders and real ales.

‘Back in the day’ said Jess, it was very unusual to serve local food and quite difficult to get a true flavour of Wales. We really had to seek out the small, vibrant cottage industries who were producing amazing tasting produce. Today of course it’s much easier with a superb and varied range available locally.”

The Taste Inn Wales Group owns three other ‘restaurants’ in the Brecon Beacons: The Castle at Llandovery; The Manor at Crickhowell; and Peterstone Court at Brecon.

Jess continues, “For over two decades we have banged the local food drum and considering the recent meat debacle which hit the headlines, it is

more important than ever. We are incredibly excited about going back to our roots at the Nantyffin Cider Mill, to grow new shoots and put it back to where it belongs, as a ‘must visit’ restaurant on the Welsh food map. Watch this space, we will announce our special plans in the coming weeks.’

The Glanusk Estate continues to embrace a modern, fresh approach to estate management. Harry Legge –Bourke said, ‘It makes perfect sense for us all to work together again to offer the fantastic quality food which Sean, Glynn and Jess are so well known for. We are all delighted at their decision to return to the Nantyffin. The Estate has developed many new ventures such as the Green Man Festival, International polo, Outdoor theatre and Concerts and we know that making the most of this great opportunity to evolve things at The Cider Mill is another exciting element of our continuing growth.” Maybe add our Facebook page url so people can see when we re-open! www.facebook.com/nantyffin louise@honeycomms.co.uk

Letter to your body

I thought this week I’d get YOU to do some work! This is an exercise I developed as part of my Weight & See lifestyle programme (Nutrition, Exercise, and Mind Health!). Take your time with this and I promise you’ll find it incredible helpful, powerful, and possibly life changing. It is very good for those who have a negative body image. Essentially we are writing TO our body whatever we may feel towards it, as if to acknowledge what it has been through. I suspect those of a certain age realise how well our bodies actually serve us and how we have wasted WAY too much time worrying over silly things. What I am HOPING will happen is that you'll (in the act of writing), realise what a BLOODY MIRACLE they are and how often the body knows best, even when it appears to have let us down....Guidelines might be (but this is YOUR letter, not mine). Maybe start from birth onwards. i.e: were you born with any medical problems? As you got older did you excel in any way for which you can thank your body? And later in life perhaps: Have you ever abused your body in anyway? If so why when and has it recovered (this might be drugs, starving, overeating, drink etc). What amazes you about your body? Have

you ever had to 'fix' your body in any way (surgery, cosmetic or needed etc). What have you done to improve your body? Was it worth it or did you obsess unnecessarily? Ha! This is a question we have covered before: Are you unhappy with any part of your body (avalanche!!). Have you learnt to live with this? What it changing as you get older? Have you ever had the experience of childbirth? What should you be appreciative of? Are you?!Do you take it for-granted? OR Do you work at it? Have you ever been really ill? Are you over it? What did you learn from it? Do you appreciate how we ARE what we eat - do you think your body is getting the best from you in this sense? And there will be more as you go through the years. I bet my bottom dollar you’ll remember just what a miracle the body is and I hope you focus less on wobbly bits and more on nourishing this fantastic vehicle of ours. Don't forget Centre exists for locals as well as visitors

Surrounded by the snow topped Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons it seems hard to believe that the cricket season is beginning. Daffodils are daring to open and there is a hint of green buds in the hedgerows which means that we may just be ready to put on some Spring finery in the countryside in time for the Walkers are Welcome walking festival in Talgarth and then the Hay Festival. The team at the Information and Resource Centre has not been idle, with two volunteers Jan Fowler and Rose Lewis attending the Local Ambassador workshop in the Town Hall, organised by the Brecon Beacons National Parks. From this the feedback to the rest of the team has been very useful together with the attractive file of information that is in the Centre for reference. Young George Hall is an addition to our team doing some work experience whilst he is looking for a permanent post. George has excellent computer skills and has been helping with some of the technical side of things with some of our customers. Another of our young volunteers Meriel Green has rolled up her sleeves, metaphorically speaking, to learn the computer code language to facilitate the work of setting up the new look Website for the Centre, which will be ready for the Summer season.

Before the Summer holidays begin the team of volunteers will be organising a ‘work’ outing to visit some of the sights that we tell our visitors about. Continuing the theme of the Local Ambassador Scheme volunteers are keen to ensure that they are knowledgeable about the local environs and heritage in order to be able to inform visitors about this beautiful region.

On Saturday the 25th May from 10.00am to 1.00pm the Information and Resource Centre will be holding an open morning to which everyone is warmly invited.

Don't forget the Centre exists for locals as well as visitors. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits and the opportunity to meet some of the volunteers and look at the resources available in our computer room, including a colour printer, laminator, guillotine and other 'office' facilities, together with the selection of maps, guidebooks and crafts in our shop. The Centre can be contacted on Tel: 01874 712226 or Email: tirc@talgarthcentre.org.uk Visit our website at www.talgarthcentre.org.uk We are also on Facebook and we would love you to become a friend.
