News from Talgarth

by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s Wye Local column, the lambs in the fields all around are enjoying the warm sun on their backs and the weather is giving us a real taste of spring. Indeed, most farmers whom I have spoken to in recent weeks readily admit that so far 2015 has been kinder to them than usual. There has also been something of a buzz around town these past few weeks, with a steady increase in visitor numbers, which can only be positive for the local economy. I hope that this will be sustained as we head towards the summer.

The third annual Talgarth Walking Festival on the May Bank Holiday weekend is a very exciting initiative and will be the culmination of a lot of commitment and hard work by Talgarth Walkers are Welcome, involving collaboration with a range of businesses and local groups, all of them determined to build upon the foundations of earlier years’ success. Once again, we are at our best when we work together to achieve shared objectives. This year, the Festival will coincide with a special visit from Pizzoferrato, Italy, as part of our popular town twinning link.

In the month that also includes Europe Day, on Saturday, 9th May, there could not be a more fitting way for us in Talgarth to show our commitment to building European and international relations at the grassroots.

Wye Local readers may already know that The Baker’s Table Cafe at Talgarth Mill recently received the accolade of a Gold Award at the Welsh National Tourism Awards.This is no mean feat and the whole team are to be congratulated on what they have achieved. Initiatives such as The Mill, The Delipot at WJ George Butchers and the Tabernacle are real engines of regeneration in our community - and we should celebrate their success. Talgarth Mill certainly

provided a prestigious venue for the launch of our Welsh Liberal Democrat manifesto this week, with media from all over Wales gathered as well as supporters from near and far.

Many people will be delighted to see an end to the current wall to wall election coverage and certainly, no one could accuse any of the local candidates of lacking stamina or zest for the campaign. Brecon & Radnorshire has a long and proud tradition of setting aside partisan considerations in favour of MPs who are committed to working selflessly for this beautiful constituency. In my lifetime, Tudor Watkins for Labour, Tom Hooson for the Conservatives and Richard Livsey for the Liberal Democrats have all been in this mould. Roger Williams is full square in this tradition too. When all the cameras are gone and the celebrity visits are over, Roger will be out there, fighting for ordinary people. Lord Livsey of Talgarth always rated Roger for his intelligence, his hard work and his compassion. So do I. This time more than ever, he deserves our support.

News from Glasbury Ward

by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury By the time you are reading this we will be just a few days away from The General Election – much to everyone’s relief! Over the past two and a half years as a candidate I have spent my time going around Brecon & Radnorshire and seeing just what fabulous people live here and what a wonderful place it is to live. But with the experience of having lived, worked and brought up my family in this constituency I am also well aware of the difficulties we all face.

One such great difficulty that we are facing right now is the schools reorganisation programme which is being forced upon Powys by the Labour Welsh Assembly.They pay no respect to the issue of ‘rurality’ and the problems that can bring. As a parent and as a school governor at Gwernyfed, fighting the proposed plans reminds why I first decided to enter the political stage.There is so much to do to get our rural voices heard from London, through Cardiff Bay and up to Llandrindod Wells and we need someone now with the energy and enthusiasm coupled with the understanding of what is happening to real people today in this constituency to fight our corner.

I have brought Cabinet Ministers to this constituency to not just see what a fabulous place it is, but most importantly to see the difficulties that we all face. So when important decisions are about to be made they will think about rural B&R and will understand the effects those decisions will have upon us. I have already had the influence to bring the Prime Minister to this constituency twice in 9 months and have also welcomed William Hague,The Home Secretary, Lord Chancellor, Agricultural Secretary, Welsh Secretary and many other members of the cabinet and if I am elected on election day it will not stop there.

On May 7th we are not just voting for someone to win the election. We are voting for someone who will represent you and everyone else in this constituency in Westminster for the next five years up until 2020.

I hope that you will give me the chance to be your representative and help put long forgotten Brecon & Radnorshire back on the map!

The favourite window sill plant of cottage gardens and grown widely in all gardens in summer. It’s so well known that it is hardly necessary to describe the large, ball-shaped heads of florets in a range of whites, pinks and reds, some with attractive markings on the petals. Many have two-colour zoning on the leaves and there are also variegated varieties.

Pelargoniums are almost all tender, evergreen plants of South African origin. When introduced to Britain they were given the common name Geranium because of their similarity to the equally wonderful, but hardy Geraniums or Cranesbills, which are also a “must have” plant for all gardens.

Pelargoniums are broadly divided into four main groups Zonal, Regal, Ivy Leaved or trailing and Scented leaved - showing how versatile the plants are.They are perfect for tubs, troughs, hanging baskets and bedding schemes in borders.

Pelargoniums benefit from regular feeding, deadheading and watering and prefer an open, sunny site.

On their own taking centre stage or planted with other summer plants such as Lobelia, Fuchsia and Petunia they are worthy of a place in every garden.

Falling off the Wagon A fellow fit pro was berating the fact that last weekend he’d fallen, spectacularly, off the wagon. He didn’t detail exactly how, but it tends to fall into two camps: he’s either normally SO good that two halves of lager feel like the ultimate sin, OR, like most of us, he really had hammered it and was too ashamed to say. Either way he got plenty of encouragement to get back on! (which he would have anyway, knowing him as I do). In an effort to make him feel better, I said to him: if you took yourself back to the Hunter Gatherer age, and imagine yourself to be a very selfish member of the tribe – you’ve simply stumbled across a very big berry bush, gorged on it, and not shared!

Hunters aside, how DO we ‘get back on it’ if we’ve stumbled? For many, life is very black and white, and that’s exactly the trouble. If you FACTOR IN for such events it makes a lot of sense; You’re then allowing for our frailties, and the psychological impossibility of following any training or nutritional regime ‘forever’ without a break. The 80/20 rule makes a lot of sense: Be very good 80% of the time, but allow a 20%

clearway for cheat meals and rest days. Make your own rules here – but stick to them. At the club I’ll say to clients: determine the MINIMUM amount of times you can make it in a week but be realistic, or it won’t work.Then make it for that session/s (I’d rather they said “1 session a week”, but definitely made it, than say “I’ll make 3” and attend two). Again – you’re factoring in being realistic and then ‘keeping your hand in’. Also - you may have noticed: bad habits are really hard to break. Far better, from a Neurolinguistic point of view, to simply exchange these for new, good habits until they crowd out the old. So you see, there’s more to it than saying “dust yourself off and carry on”. You need to look at WHY you’ve fallen, hopefully in the minutest detail, and see that each time you DO mess up, it’s a further opportunity to examine this closer each time. Local Talent: Chris Armstrong Artist Name? Chris Armstrong.

Where can your products be purchased? The Hay Makers Gallery in St John’s Place, Hay-on-Wye. Price Range? £10- £900.

How long have you been an artist? I set up my workshop in converted farm buildings we acquired in 1989 having decided to turn a hobby into a full time occupation.

Where did you train or gain experience? I did a number of short term courses including one at West Dean College which introduced me to chair making and one on green woodworking with Mike Abbott. I did research through books and visits to museums to study Arts and Crafts period furniture particularly the chairs of Ernest Gimson and Philip Clissett the Herefordshire chairmaker who worked near Bosbury near Ledbury in the late 19th century.

I have learnt quite a lot from my own mistakes!

What has been your proudest moment? I was pleased to be able to make chairs for each of my children when they had their 21st birthdays.

What would you class as your masterpiece? I am still working towards that - one can always improve but I am quite pleased with some of my more recent bowls I have been making from black walnut and still hope to find the perfectly satisfying shape.

Have you any future plans for your work? I hope to continue to produce a good variety of work and will be opening my workshop which I share with Ben Hills for the Herefordshire H.Art open studio week in September as we have done for a few years. I will also continue to be involved with woodland management using timber from two small Herefordshire woods I have an interest in. I aim to plant many more trees than I have cut down.

What advice would you give a local artist? That might be a bit presumptuous but I would encourage perseverance and getting feedback on what you are producing. It can be a lonely activity but collaboration

with others particularly in selling your work can be very helpful.

What other local artists do you admire? I am proud to be associated with all the members of the Hay Makers Gallery who produce some wonderful work. Also I have the greatest respect for the uncompromising standards set by furniture designer and maker Ben Hills.

Artist statement: My aim is to produce functional and aesthetically pleasing work using the principles espoused by William Morris.

I am particularly interested in exploring how the best use can be made of the potential resources of our local woods using sustainable and sensitive methods of woodland management which take into account conservation issues.

REVIEW

Cruising down the River Wye on a Paddle Board!

PSM Outdoors’ shop is situated on the high street in Hay-on-Wye, “an Aladdin’s cave full of outdoor clothing and equipment with over 50 canoes, kayaks and paddling gear.”The shop backs up PSM’s courses, which are based in Glasbury, the River Wye being predominantly used.

I met Peter, my instructor for the morning and he kitted me out with all the safety equipment required.

A wetsuit, gloves and a helmet were provided. Once I was suited and booted, we made our way to the river in Glasbury.

When we arrived, Peter ran through what craft we were going to be using that morning. I was shown the impressive Paddle boards and a Sit On Top Kayak.

Peter gave me some information about the craft.The Paddle boards are made by Red Paddle, which are good quality and British made. PSM believe in using good quality gear and kit people out with all the safety kit needed, creating the safest environment as they can. There are larger and smaller boards available, depending on what’s suitable for you. Just looking at the boards, you can see how sturdy they are! The boards are really versatile, and can be used on rivers, lakes, the sea etc.

Peter made sure we warmed up on the beach before hitting the water, doing a few quick exercises. He then demonstrated how to use the Paddle correctly, and ran through what we’d be doing in the session.

First of all we walked into the river until the water was knee height, then it was time to get on the board! I lay on my front on the board and paddled with my hands, getting the feel of it. I then progressed to kneeling on the board and using the paddle. After calmly making my way around the river kneeling for a while, it was the moment of truth; it was time to get on my feet! I was a bit wary of this as my balance isn’t great, but there was nothing to worry about, the boards are so solid and sturdy, I didn’t feel like I was going to fall, and amazingly I didn’t. Hooray! It was a lot easier than I expected and if I can do it, you can!

Once I’d had a good go on the Paddle board, we tried out the Open Top Kayak, which was also great fun. I found it so enjoyable to paddle around the

edges of the river, taking in the beautiful surroundings.

Glasbury is a great venue and such a nice environment for people to learn water sports. “Glasbury is an ideal place to take your first paddle strokes” as Peter said, and I agree!

Peter is a local fully qualified BCU and Canoe Wales Coach and River Guide who has extensive local knowledge of the river and the environment, and so when making our way around the river, he told me a bit about the history of the river, the surroundings and wildlife knowledge, which gave the experience just that little bit extra! Peter was a great instructor!

I felt safe and comfortable at all times. He was really encouraging, he’d tell me if I was doing well or if there was something I could be doing better. He said the most important thing was that I felt safe. Peter wants people to go out and enjoy the environment, having a go at a new sport and feeling confident with the people they are with. It’s all about teaching people to paddle and learning a new skill.

Paddle Boarding is for all ages, from kids to the retired. Depending on the group or type of person, Peter will make the session suitable for them. For the more adventurous paddlers, you can play games, and try capsizing and tricks. Or if you’d prefer a more relaxed paddle, he’d create a more calm experience where you can take in the scenery and just enjoy the river. Small groups and families are what PSM are about. A range of half day or full day sessions are available, contact PSM for more information.

Days on the river give you the opportunity to try several different kayaks, canoes and paddle boards and if you are looking to buy, but aren’t sure what craft is for you.

I loved enjoying our beautiful river whilst learning something new. My Paddle board experience taught me that we should use this river more, as we are lucky to have it on our doorstep! The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Writing this in mid April with the sun blazing and a forecast of more to come I think that I can safely say that we have been exceptionally lucky with the winter weather that never stopped our visits to market. Until we got the depot with it’s larger cold store we were terribly at the mercy of the winter weather and I have, in the past, sometimes been unable to get all we needed for the deliveries.

All this good weather now and people are expecting all sorts of new home grown crops and they are asking for the impossible. We must remember that the ground has been cold until less than a month ago and even the quickest growing plants take some weeks to come to harvest. I am aware that people’s ideas are influenced by some of the forced crops and that there are English strawberries for sale and so on. It is only this week that native asparagus has come on the market from the fields rather than the greenhouse, and this is reflected in the price. Rhubarb is now plentiful and good.

Potatoes are coming in from Mallorca, the first ones being Lady Cristal but the later ones to arrive are Maris Peer which are nicer. The Jersey Royals have been far too small and totally impracticable for scraping. So far only one small delivery of Cornish potatoes has arrived but there will soon be more, to be closely followed by the Pembrokes and then the more local Herefordshire ones.

Peas and broad beans are coming from Portugal and are alright but the British ones will be better when they are ready. Runner beans will not be harvested until much later as they have to wait until there is no chance of a frost before being planted. Imported runner beans are never good and frequently have a nasty looking rust on them.

At the end of this month is the Hay Festival - very early this year - and that is when we can expect local strawberries to be ready, closely followed by raspberries and blueberries and then the currants but that is getting a bit past May. I hope the forecasts are correct and that we have a lovely hot summer.

Wild in May

Protecting wildlife for the future the old road up to the Gospel Pass in the Digedi Valley (above Llanigon) and is frequent along stream edges such as the Lynfi near Glasbury. It even occurs sporadically along the bank of the Wye below Hay. It is less common in the west of the county.

Other names for the flower have been “Fair Maids” or “First of May” and it used to be a common garden flower – maybe the “Pretty Maids all in a row” of the rhyme.

Saxifraga Granulata Meadow Saxifrage is just one of the many flowers that will be appearing in our area in May. This flower reminds me of the “whiter than white” adverts of my childhood because, when you find it together with Greater Stitchwort, it shines out in contrast to its more prolific neighbour. It can be abundant on

Discover Hay Festival This year’s Hay Festival, 21-31 May, is jampacked with story-tellers, historians, scientists and environmentalists, with a healthy helping of comedians and musicians too. From morning till night you can listen to inspirational speakers, ask questions, discuss ideas, and browse in our Festival Bookshop, stocking 55,000 books, where titles for all tastes and ages are available.

Dog Owners!

“From time to time I take my Labrador into Hay to walk along the beautiful old railway line, and to enjoy the peace and tranquillity beside the river.

I was truly saddened today to see so much dog fouling and even bags of collected dog dirt left along the side of the paths. Someone had marked some of the piles with bright pink spray, which highlighted the problem, so I am not on my own in thinking how disgusting this is. Surely it is easy enough to take a plastic bag with you on your walk and place it in the bin provided.The bags are available from the Library free of charge.

What a shame to spoil such a beautiful, peaceful walk with this irresponsible behaviour.

There are many people who walk along this way, who are not dog owners. Visitors also enjoy the area. What must they think?

Threat to close Gwernyfed High School In mid March Powys County Council summoned the Head Teacher and Chair of Gwernyfed High School, together with their counterparts in Brecon to County Hall to be told that by 2018 our local school will close and pupils transferd to a new 25 million pound building! (still to be built and finance obtained) on the site of the existing Brecon school.

Therefore, Gwernyfed, which these days has excellent academic results, increasing numbers of pupils, runs a balance or surplus budget and has superb facilities, will be sacrificed to sort out the problems at the Brecon school, namely, a building falling down, academic results declining, currently “in special measures” and an accumulative deficit heading towards a million pounds. It is difficult to escape the conclusion that Powys County Council has completely lost the plot. If the school closes it will not just be pupils and staff who will suffer but the many community groups that are involved with Gwernyfed and therefore our communities will be the poorer.

Let me be clear I do not want to see Brecon High School close but I want to see it reach a stage when its education and financial standards match those of Gwernyfed. I want its students to have a decent building in which to learn and the kind of community involvement all good schools enjoy but not at the expense of Gwernyfed.

Talent in the Buttermarket An exciting and inspiring event awaits in the Buttermarket on Friday, 29th and Saturday, 30th May over the Hay Festival, called Artisans at Hay. Made up of 12 very talented and creative artisans, this collective has been participating during the Hay Festival over the last five years to great success, encouragement and always receiving a fantastic welcome. There will be some makers you will have seen before, but we are proud to always offer something new as well. The products cover Welsh and English local honey, porcelain vases, kiln fired glass, stone wear, furniture making, wooden toys, iron work, limited edition artworks, hand painted scarves, decoupage and woodwork. All original work, highly creative and all represented by the makers themselves. Work will be for sale and commissions taken. All the makers are highly qualified in their own craft and come from the surrounding area. The event is completely free and you are all welcome to browse and make purchases at your leisure. They will be trading from 9.30 to 6.00pm both days, and commissions can also be discussed for custom made items.

Fancy a family bike ride?

Margaret Taylor and Grahame Penny, owners of the Whitney Toll Bridge, have kindly allowed the oldest competitor in next month’s Velothon John Harrison, together with his wife and friends, the use of the bridge on Saturday 16th May to collect in aid of Cancer Research UK instead of paying the usual 80p. car toll. Snacks, tea and coffee & cold drinks will be available to motorists, cyclists and walkers for donations to the charity.

John will be riding the demanding 140 km event on June 14th with 15,000 world-wide competitors on closed roads, starting and finishing in Cardiff within a time limit, before professional cyclists from famous Tour de France teams set out on the same circuit, which includes the dreaded Tumble Hill from Abergavenny towards Blaenavon. Donations can be made via Just Giving.

On Saturday 16th May cyclists can enter a 80 km endurance ride starting at10am from Drover Cycles in Hay on Wye, or at 10.30am from Whitney Toll Bridge. Entry is £10 per person in aid of Cancer Research UK and includes refreshments at the finish.

The route can be shortened or lengthened to suit the ability of riders.

A family ride that includes a bridle path route for a total 11 km will leave Whitney Village Hall at 10.30am on 16th May. Entry is £10 for families or £5 for individuals in aid of cancer Research UK and will include refreshments at the finish.

Results of this year’s Local Landscapes Photography Competition Thank you to the 100’s of entries which were sent in.

Yet again, proof of such amazing photographic talent in our area. To judge this year’s competition we had professional photographer Clare Williams, Nicole Williams who is our newest team member and who has a very special artistic flair, and me, Lisa Marie, with a passion for photography and I just wish that I had more time to get out with my own camera!

First prize went to Leszek Golombiewski who captured this magical image over Pontsticill Reservoir.

Dark Skies events are very popular in our area, with various festivals and sites offering superb chances to see such views. We hope this image will really bring to light, what a magnificent area that we are so lucky to live within. This image will be the front cover of our 2016 Local Landscapes Calendar, we started the calendar in the hope visitors would purchase during their stay, then the following year the calendar would be a reminder and ensure they come back!

Second prize went to Paul Morris. The tone of the colours give it a very dramatic feel.This will be the image for December, lifting our spirits to this cold month.

Third prize went to Gary Atherton. Great skill would have been needed to capture this image.

Colours are vibrant and will be a superb image for the month of May in our Calendar.

The results to this competition are now on our Cariads Local Ltd Facebook Page. Be sure to add your comments to the individual images and share with family and friends. We want to hear your views!

Our Open Day will be on Saturday 27th June at Bryngywn. There will be stalls, activities and demonstrations, please come along and join the fun.

Bryngwyn RDA Spring is finally here and it’s all go at Bryngwyn RDA Group. The big news is that we have passed the final stage of the assessment to become a fully fledged driving group. Driving will start in May which is really exciting. Carriage driving is suited to people with all sorts of disabilities, you can work towards proficiency tests, doing a dressage test, driving around obstacle courses or simply going for fun drives in the amazing countryside around Bryngwyn.

The Group is looking for new volunteers who want to get involved in driving, it doesn’t matter what your current level of experience is, full training can be given. For more information or to come for a visit, please contact Ruth Stephens.

If you are undertaking any spring cleaning or decluttering, please save your goods, especially brica-brac, toys and clothing for the charity shop in September. This is an important fundraiser for the Group and helps to cover the costs of buying new equipment and running costs.

The Group always needs new volunteers to come and help at riding and driving sessions and support fundraising activities. A willingness to learn and be part of an enthusiastic team is more important than previous experience. All volunteers need to fill in an application form and complete training sessions and a DBS check.

Glasbury Playground It is with great pleasure that we can announce that we have ordered a Basketball post, net and board and hope that it can be erected by the end of May. Thanks to Noah Cripps and his friends for proposing the idea for a piece of equipment more suitable for older children.

On that note the adults have also requested a piece of equipment to ensure they have something to do whilst their children/grandchildren play. Thanks to Chris Aldridge for his proposal whilst Steve Butcher

(Powys Council Play Rep.) was inspecting the space in the Play Area and ensuring it is safe and suitable for the new equipment.

So, watch out for further news of this development in the near future.

Last month we put on a Table Sale with 13 tables including local people from Glasbury, Clyro and Erwood as well as tables for the hall, play area, a prize raffle, tombola and a train game too!

Thanks to everyone who came along, donated cakes, goods and prizes, helped clear up and put up and delivered fliers. Thanks also to Chris and Sue Aldridge for doing the refreshments. Lastly, hearty cheers to Chris Davies and his wife Liz who turned up after a busy day – Chris kindly called the raffle and coordinated the cake auction at the end of the afternoon. The result was a lovely afternoon with old and new friends and neighbours and also raising £351.00 towards the new equipment and Village Hall funds.

Our next Play Area event is the 4th year of the Duck Race and Barbecue. Further bulletins will be posted once the details have been finalised. The date for the Duck Race is Sunday 30th August.

Gwernyfed High School Gwernyfed Community & School Minibus: A wide number of community groups, schools and local sports clubs rely upon the use of the Gwernyfed School minibuses. The school is the only provider in the area and ensures that charges are minimal to cover costs only. Unfortunately one of the two school minibuses has had to be retired and so the school and the community have come together to fundraise for a replacement.

There are 2 ways in which you can help: Hay Festival Concert: Peter Florence has very kindly agreed that the Hay Festival will provide a venue for a fundraising Concert on Thursday 21st May at 7pm.

Talgarth Male Voice Choir, Hay Community Choir and choirs and performers from the High School and the surrounding Primary Schools will be performing. The event is being compered by Councillor Chris Davies.

Tickets cost £5 and are available from the Hay Festival box office (until 21st May) or from the School Office (until 8th May). Please support your community and schools in this venture and come to the Concert.

Grand Raffle: There is also a grand raffle with tickets being sold across the community over the next few weeks. First prize is £100 and there are many other valuable prizes including vouchers, meals, and jewellery. Thank you to the local businesses who have contributed. The raffle prizes will be drawn at the Hay Festival concert.

Hay Together Hay Together’s Volunteer Service is changing. From June 1st, all Hay’s volunteering needs will be met

by Powys Volunteer Centre which is part of PAVO, based in Llandrindod Wells (01597 822191).

They work to promote volunteering and offer a comprehensive information and guidance service on volunteering opportunities, volunteer recruitment and support. PAVO (Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations) funded the Hay Together Volunteer Service, and we are very grateful to them for all their support, guidance and patience.

We have had an enormously successful eighteen months in our office at the Castle, helping around fifty people into voluntary work. Lots of local organisations benefit from the involvement of willing volunteers, and will continue to do so under the management of Powys Volunteer Centre.

We are saying goodbye to the Hay Together office at the Castle. Hay Castle Trust have been fantastic supporters of our work, and we are very grateful to Nancy and the team. We wish them every success in bringing their ambitious and exciting plans to fruition.

In the short term, Hay Together will continue to operate as a news and communications hub for the town. Our longer-term strategic direction will be decided by our members and the needs of our community. Hay Town Council Over the last year Hay Town Council has faced a wide range of challenges.

Sadly, this year we lost one of our longest standing councillors, Nigel Birch. We will all miss his acerbic wit as much as his knowledge, experience and valued opinions.

One of the greatest challenges faced has been the proposed transfer of assets from Powys County Council involving Hay Council taking on responsibility for a range of facilities. After much discussion, an agreement was reached whereby we have taken charge of toilets, sports facilities and council offices. This puts an extra cost on the Council, partly met by securing a share of the car park profits. The next stages are refurbishment of the toilets and establishing a management committee to run the sports facilities.

This year BBNP chose Hay as a pilot to draw up a town plan. Again, this has involved much effort by the town council sub-committee. The residents’ survey has been collected and the information collated to assess what the residents want for their town. We must now find out how this can be achieved.

We have also been successful in securing a £20,000 grant to improve signage throughout the town.

Work on this will start soon.

This is just a small part of the work taken on by the council this year. As retiring mayor I would like to thank my fellow councillors and town clerk for all their endeavours in addressing these challenges and working hard to achieve the best for Hay. Councillor Fiona Howard, Mayor Timbuktu We’ll be busy during the Festival with various activities, raising awareness and funds for our work with education and medical projects in Hay’s twin town of Timbuktu. On Sunday May 24th, the Medics will be holding their popular ‘Africa Day’. This takes place at Hay Parish Hall, 10am - 4pm, with African market stalls, great curries, Fairtrade teas, and

drumming workshops. It’s a fantastic day enjoyed by all ages so do pop in for some African fun.

You’ll spot our fundraisers on the streets at the start of the Festival, collecting for the schools project.

We’ll be doing the same following the Tinariwen gig on the 28th, thanks to Peter Florence and the Festival team for the opportunity.

We recently sent out six laptops to our school links in Timbuktu. These were funded by an IBM grant and matched by local fundraising. We’re hearing great things about the impact of our Girls in School project, the latest thank you message read: “What you are doing is precious, important and very helpful for the girls and for the school.”
