Vice President, ASBIS Middle East
In conversation with Hesham Tantawi, Vice President at ASBIS Middle East as he discusses challenges and opportunities across IT distribution, the importance of alliances and partnerships and how ASBIS stays ahead of the curve.
Could you share some of the major milestones ASBIS Middle East has achieved over the past few years?
At ASBIS Middle East, we've experienced significant growth over the years. As one of the oldest technology distributors in the region, we have consistently demonstrated that we are the right partner for our vendors, customers and channel partners here. Achieving success is a process of building it step by step, one can reach greater heights in course of time if you build block by block and then by putting these blocks together. That’s exactly what we have done here, we have built ASBIS Middle East block by block. We're more than just a distribution company; we are a distributor focused on building markets, forging partnerships, and creating value.
In recent years, we have consistently delivered impressive results, growing by double digits year over year. We've also set the foundation for future growth.
In 2024, we expanded into new markets and segments we hadn't previously explored, including servers, storage, and networking. We are now recognized as a major player in networking and unified communications, as well as in video conferencing technologies. These are areas we had not ventured into before, and we have laid the groundwork to capitalize on these segments in 2025, driving further growth.
How would you evaluate the current state of the IT distribution market in the Middle East & Africa region? What challenges and opportunities do you
see with emerging technologies?
I have spent almost 4 decades in IT Distribution, 38 years to be precise. Having spent nearly 38 years in the industry, I've witnessed the market's evolution firsthand and have seen the markets go up and down. In the early years of my career, we saw the rise of emerging technologies, which, over time, transitioned from being niche innovations to mainstream commodities. What began as specialized technology soon became essential for everyone.
Over the years, we've seen significant global growth, opening up markets and leading to consolidation. Every year we are seeing more and more vendors moving towards consolidation. For instance, there were vendors, 10 years ago who worked with 25 distributors., today, they rely on just two. So this shift toward consolidation is evident across the industry.
We are also seeing a change in how end users are segmented. If we check today, mega projects worldwide or top 5 customers for any IT vendor would be Meta, X, Amazon and so on. All of these companies are huge customers right now for every and single IT vendor. These mega projects and large clients have become central to the strategy of IT vendors, and this shift is narrowing the distribution channels. This means the consolidation on distribution is essential, and every vendor in the world is looking for the consolidation. What I'm seeing in 2025 is more of alliances, vendor-alliances, distributor alliances with major customers and partners. This will be the big game in 2025. It will all be about alliances.
Can you talk about your partnership with major technology vendors, how do they impact ASBIS' market positioning in the region?
At ASBIS, we follow a clear strategy and have a sharp focus on what we do. Even our slogan at ASBIS, 'SUCCESS THROUGH FOCUS', reflects our core approach. This is our core, and we add value to the vendors because we build blocks and we build a future together.
We build markets and implement market strategies, and our alliances are built for the long term—we don't focus on short-term business.
So, if you look at major vendors we are representing in this region, for example, if we talk about Intel, we are talking about 28 years of partnership, with AMD 22 years of partnership, Seagate 33 years of partnership. This
long-term collaboration gives us a deep understanding of the technologies we distribute. In fact, we're often ahead of other distributors by 1 or 2 years in terms of technology and sales techniques, which strengthens our market position in the region. This depth of experience and forward-looking approach ensures we continue to lead in our segment.
It is all about sustainability, in the way we do business and about standards and processes in everything we do, for smooth operations and effective outcomes.
And not to forget, partnerships & alliances. This is the absolute need of the hour and we value our commitment to our vendors and partners.
How do you foster innovation within the company and ensure ASBIS remains ahead of the competition?
At ASBIS, we prioritize diversity within our organization, as we operate in over 32 countries across the EMEA region, focusing primarily on emerging markets. This wide geographical footprint gives us access to a vast pool of knowledge and insights about global trends.
I

What began as specialized technology soon became essential for everyone.”
By observing both emerging markets and more mature markets like the US, UAE, UK, and Germany, we can identify trends and innovations before they reach the broader market. In emerging markets, we often find ourselves 2 to 3 years ahead of the competition. We actively implement the strategies and innovations we see in these markets to stay ahead of our competitors.
So, once you are ahead of the competition, you lead the market.
Our approach to innovation includes adopting new sales techniques, upgrading our systems, introducing cutting-edge technologies, and raising the bar in terms of partnership standards. By staying ahead in these areas, we maintain our leadership position in the market and ensure that no one can easily compete with us.
As a veteran in the industry, what advice would you give to other leaders with the technology sector and beyond?
Three things.
1. BE AHEAD OF TECHNOLOGY
2. BE HONEST TO YOURSELF
3. BE HONEST TO YOUR PARTNERS

AI and machine learning are revolutionizing security operations by enhancing threat detec-tion, streamlining processes, and enabling proactive decision-making. These technologies can analyze vast amounts of data in real-time, identifying patterns and anomalies that might go unnoticed by human operators. At Genetec, we use a subset of AI called deep learning for purposebuilt solutions that rely on identifying trends and dependencies between features present in the data itself. Examples include:
For instance, Genetec integrates AI into license plate recognition, helping track wanted vehi-cles, streamline employee parking, and monitor traffic flow across urban environments. Be-yond security, our solutions analyze data from IoT sensors and interconnected systems to
optimize operations, uncover actionable insights, and improve overall business performance. By embedding AI and deep learning across our portfolio, Genetec empowers organizations to make smarter, faster, and more informed decisions, ultimately shaping a safer, more effi-cient future.
Genetec recently released the 2025 State of Physical Security Report, can you share top highlights of the findings?
Based on insights from more than 600 physical security leaders, including end users, chan-nel partners, and systems integrators, the Genetec State of Physical Security Report 2025 offered a comprehensive analysis of evolving trends in the META physical security market. Some of the top highlights include a purpose-driven approach to cloud, increased AI adoption and the IT department's strategic influence on a company’s outlook to physical security.
According to the report, 48% of META end users envision hybrid deployments as their pre-ferred approach within the next five years, compared to just 22% favoring fully cloud-based implementations and 25% planning to remain fully on-premises. This data not only reflects the rising demand for adaptable deployment models in the region but also highlights a meas-ured approach to cloud adoption as the industry matures.
Similarly, 78% of end users in the META region say physical security and information tech-nology (IT) departments now work collaboratively with their IT departments, taking on an in-creasing role in the buying process, and are now actively involved in physical security pur-chasing decisions.
The report also revealed a significant rise in the interest in AI adoption in physical security, with 46% of end users planning to implement AI-powered features in 2025, up from just 14% in 2024. This heightened interest aligns with a strategic, purpose-driven approach where or-ganizations are focusing on practical applications, such as refining threat detection and au-tomating routine processes, with intelligent automation as the ultimate goal.

What are the most important security trends organizations should be prepared for in the coming years?
In 2025, the physical security industry will focus on ways to maximize existing investments to enhance security, increase efficiency, and boost collaboration between teams.
One of the most promising trends in physical security is the growing adoption of hybrid-cloud technologies. In 2025, decision-makers will prioritize hybrid systems, focusing on centralized monitoring, reduced maintenance with quick-deploy hybrid cloud systems, and modernizing video or access control systems without discarding existing investments.
In addition to hybrid-cloud technologies, The 2025 State of Physical Security Report indi-cates that 42% of respondents who work in procurement, management, or use of physical security technology, plan to deploy some facet of AI in their security operations in the coming months. When applied thoughtfully, AI-enabled security solutions can be game-changing. Additionally, work management solutions are poised to revolutionize how physical security teams collaborate, communicate, and manage their tasks.
Similarly, end users will demand more from service providers including channel partners, consultants, and technology vendors. They expect these providers to have a deeper under-standing of cybersecurity, operations, data, and business automation. They’ll want more co-hesive guidance to address stakeholder needs and equip them with the right tools.
In conversation with Dr. Mohamed Madkour, VP of ICT Strategy at Huawei, as he shares insights on how Huawei is shaping ICT Talents across ME&CA region and important collaborations driving the initiative.
Dr. Mohamed Madkour VP of ICT Strategy, Huawei
10 years of HUAWEI ICT Academy, how did it all start and how would you rate the achievements of the academy so far?
Huawei is way ahead with the talent strategy. The way Huawei sees the talents, especially the ICT talentsthey are the lifeblood for any transformative story or journey of any organization or any country. We started taking this as a foundational strategy about 10 years ago here in the Middle East.
Being a global ICT products and solutions provider, the way we look at ICT talents is that they are one of the reasons that we as Huawei, have a sustainable business
also. So, from that, we established the ICT talents cultivation program with the Huawei ICT Academy. And when I talk about ICT talents, I am talking about the young students, the young talent within universities collaborating with us. It's about cultivating the talent and making them future ready from the word go.
We have extensive programs like the Huawei ICT Competition, Training the Trainers Curriculums. This is an entire program; an initiative designed to cultivate fresh talent and prepare them into future leaders with help at every step. It’s all about collaborations and the impact it can create. If we talk about just the Middle East and Central Asia, we have more than 260 academies. So, these are all results of the past decade where we gave it our all to, and for the ICT talents.
Not just the students or universities, we are actually serving the vision of countries that are looking to nurture their talent. For example, Saudi Vision 2030, We the UAE 2031, Uzbekistan 2030, all of those are highlighting and underlining these strategies. We are all aligned and focused towards that single goal. Also, one of the unique things about Huawei is that we are not doing this alone, we grabbed all of the ecosystem together and working in tandem with each of the stakeholders to make this a success. Naturally, it's been an extremely successful program or initiative.
Now in the next few years how do you see the growth happening on the collaboration part?
That's a great question. So, you can do it both ways. You can do horizontally enhancing your coverage, but you can also do it vertically in terms of how the evolution, optimization and the adaptation paces out in the AI era. Because that's fundamentally important. When you see the pace at which technology advances, you want to think how traditional talents can adapt to this era? And do we use the same traditional logic in cultivating
talents that was here 10 years ago? So that tells you everything you need to change from that point of view. To be honest, currently, we are focusing on, first of all the evolution of the program to be able to really serve intelligence. And when I say intelligence, not just naked AI. I'm talking about intelligence that's solving industrial problems that has intelligence under it. That's the key. If you see, it's actually a two-way bridge. We are looking for universities that also have the ambitions, who want to work with us.
We focus regionally, our focus is to really look for these kinds of collaborations and then assigning resources, budgeting the program effectively. And again, as I said, we are serving the countries, it’s a way of giving back to the country by enhancing their ecosystem, educating the future leaders of these countries and enriching them.
To conclude, there are endless possibilities on how this ecosystem can grow and how we can expand our collaborations within local and regional markets to nurture the talents.
Huawei has been at the forefront of 5G Technology since these conversations began and you are already talking about 5G Advanced and the new mobile AI era. Can you elaborate a bit more on this?
Well, first of all, thank you for saying that we are at the forefront of the 5G technology because that's evident
from all of the support that we have. But let me tell you, we are at the forefront because we have our customers and countries, especially in the GCC areas, that want to be at the forefront of the technology. So, we are at the forefront because they are at the forefront.
So it's like a give and take. They have the passion that encourages us to support them with the most advanced technology.
As a matter of fact, we announced 2 weeks ago that the ME&CA is the first 5G Advanced region. Collectively we collaborated and it’s not just collaboration with partners but even with our competitors. We were on stage with our competitors today. That should tell you a lot about the way we work. Specifically, when it comes to 5G Advanced and AI, we believe that these 2 are essentially important at this point of time fundamentally to move us into another stage. And when I'm talking about another stage, I'm not really wanting to focus only on the speed, the speed is one part of it. But we are looking at 5G Advanced as an enabler for the AI era because AI needs 5G Advanced to enhance the connectivity, as AI is going to be distributed everywhere and not just in 1 data center. And we believe that 5G Advanced also needs AI because 5G Advanced can be so complicated, you will need AI in automating the network, in making it more efficient as well as in reducing the power consumption.
We have extensive programs like the Huawei ICT Competition, Training the Trainers Curriculums. This is an entire program; an initiative designed to cultivate fresh talent and prepare them into future leaders with help at every step."
I am really excited about the opportunities, especially in the GCC area and I can tell you that they champion the fixed wireless access. And for fixed wireless access, they need more data. Some of our customers really want to deploy 5G Advanced because 5G is not enough for the amount of data generated currently. So that's one application that's really obvious in the Middle East.
On the other hand, talking about industrial applications when it comes to, for example, in factories, you have different cameras sending in the uplink data. You cannot use 5G in there. We have all heard about ambitious projects coming up in GCC area like the flying taxi, drones etc. they all need low latency. So, we see the applications, we see the need for 5G Advanced coupled with AI. I think there’s tons of opportunities. And the good thing is that we have already started it and we have the collaborations in place with many carriers that have already launched 5G at least. So that's a great news for all.
the one hand, it powers advanced threat detection, anomaly detection, and automated response systems, enabling defenders to stay ahead of emerging threats. On the other, it is being weaponized by attackers to create more sophisticated and adaptive exploits. We are entering an era where AI systems will battle AI systems, with human security teams orchestrating strategies to maintain the upper hand.
Zero Trust exits its buzzword era to become a fundamental security necessity: Imagine a security system that treats every digital interaction as potentially suspicious, requiring continuous verification – much like a hyper-vigilant airport security checkpoint that doesn’t just check your ID at the entrance, but monitors your every move. Zero Trust operates on a simple yet powerful principle: trust nothing by default, verify everything constantly. This methodology has become even more essential as traditional network boundaries disintegrate in our cloud-native, distributed work environments.
Connectivity and the ever-expanding space-based Internet will face new challenges and growing pains with machine-to-machine traffic: Connectivity itself is undergoing a profound transformation. As space-based internet services gain traction and billions of IoT devices come online, networks must now handle not only humanto-human communication but also an ever-growing flood of machine-to-machine API traffic. Meeting this challenge calls for designing networks with security, reliability, and performance baked in from the start.
2025 brings new exciting trends and investments around technology that will shape organizations in coming years.
The AI revolution will hinge on edge computing: To unlock AI’s true potential, edge computing must bring the compute power closer to where it’s actually needed. Edge computing represents a paradigm shift, dramatically reducing latency and enabling a new generation of sophisticated, responsive applications. Imagine autonomous vehicles making split-second decisions, interactive gaming with zero perceptible delay, and real-time video processing that responds instantaneously. The future of AI is not just about raw computational power, but about smart, distributed computing that brings intelligence closer to where it’s most impactful.
AI is the double-edged sword of cybersecurity: On
AI will transform the user experience and how we interact with our favorite technologies: Imagine retail platforms that intuitively understand your preferences before you articulate them, or educational tools that dynamically adjust to your unique learning style in real time. These experiences are made possible by sophisticated AI algorithms that leverage comprehensive yet ethically-sourced data. Critical to this transformation is robust infrastructure that ensures seamless, consistent experiences across devices and locations. Emerging technologies like edge computing are key to this vision, bringing computational resources closer to users and enabling faster, more responsive interactions. The future of user experience is not just about technology—it’s about creating intelligent, intuitive connections that feel almost magical in their precision and personalization.
As we begin the new year, it is clear that AI will continue to drive market momentum and innovation. After three trading days into 2025, shares of major tech companies NVIDIA, Arm, and TSMC rose by 11%, 19%, and 11%, respectively. These early gains are a testament to the enduring and expanding role AI will play throughout 2025, “said Jean-Paul van Oudheusden, Market Analyst at eToro.”
The surge in AI funding shows no sign of slowing down. In 2024, early-stage AI companies in the United States secured an impressive $97 billion in funding, accounting for nearly half of the $209 billion raised by all American start-ups combined, according to PitchBook. European start-ups also capitalized on the AI boom, raising $62 billion, with a quarter of that amount directed towards AI ventures. A significant portion of this funding came from private sources, with major players like Elon Musk’s xAI, OpenAI, and Anthropic leading the charge in the US. In Europe, Mistral AI is also emerging as a key competitor. These developments further highlight the US as a global hub for AI innovation and investment.
The growing interest in AI is taking center stage at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Major tech companies are unveiling products such as laptops, TVs, and displays that showcase AI-powered assistants now within reach of everyday consumers. While challenges remain in perfecting these technologies, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote speech at CES confirmed that the AI revolution is imminent. In the near future, users will be able to interact with screens that provide real-time data, while humanoid robots will take on increasingly complex physical tasks, though their development is expected to take more time.
Central to the success of AI technology is the need for immense computing power. This demand is being
met by companies like NVIDIA, Arm, and TSMC. NVIDIA’s advanced chips, referred to as “AI factories,” are manufactured by TSMC based on Arm’s designs. Together, these companies form a powerful trio that is driving the AI revolution. Their dominance has attracted not only end-users but also investors, with major tech giants like Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft increasing their combined mar-ket capitalization by an astounding $8 trillion since the launch of ChatGPT in autumn 2022.
The AI race extends far beyond securing funding and developing hardware; it is also about attracting top talent, fostering innovation, and creating the most conducive environments for technological breakthroughs. According to PitchBook, Europe has already fallen behind in this race, with many start-ups in traditional sectors struggling to secure the necessary funding. As a result, investors in 2025 will need to prioritize AI to stay ahead of the curve and capitalize on its vast potential.
Rajiv Ramaswami, President and CEO of Nutanix, says, "AI applications in the enterprise are going to become mainstream. Most companies at this point are in the early stages of adopting generative AI, and they’re starting to find some good business benefits.
For example, internally at Nutanix we’re targeting a 25% improvement in our developer productivity by employing generative AI to do things like code generation for unit testing and a bunch of other functions. So these things are going to start becoming real across multiple facets in the enterprise, as these newer AI applications come to bear."
Indu Keri, General Manager and Head of Engineering for Nutanix’s Hybrid Cloud: The first software 2.0 applications will emerge. Software development and engineering is already being democratized with tools like Copilot. However, the transformation of enterprise software is just beginning. Today, software workflows are the same whether they are executed the first time or the millionth time. New software will start to emerge in 2025 that will learn from usage, and without active coding, will improve user experience and productivity, and this tech will be the beginning of a 20-year era of software transformation.
Blockchain will return with a vengeance, as will crypto. The expectation that the new administration will be cryptofriendly has already sent Bitcoin price above $100,000. However, blockchain will make a comeback,

based on regulatory fiat and the need to provide publicly-verifiable systems of record.
Power consumption from inferencing at the edge will become an issue. The projected energy demand in the US is expected to double in the next 4 years, to roughly 880 TW. This is likely understating the growth if appropriate optimizations are not made to power usage and consumption. And contrary to popular perception, inferencing will be the true behemoth of power consumption, not just training.
Debo Dutta,
VP of Engineering, AI, Nutanix:
We will get closer to AGI in 2025 via reasoning models like OpenAI o1 and its competition from Meta LLama and Alibaba. This will give AI models significantly more capabilities than today.
GenAI leadership is open, small
and global. We will see a lot of open permissible models that can do as well, if not better than closed models. We will also see open reasoning models too. In addition, models will also get compressed by learning from bigger/powerful models.
Inference scaling or scaling computation during inference time will dramatically increase the cost of AI inference. Enterprises will need to revisit their infrastructure and power investments due to this new technology trend.
Multi-agent AI or Systems of cooperating Agents will take center stage. This will involve a collection of AI agents working cooperatively and will need new people, processes and technology to enable this in the enterprise. I also anticipate Agents will negotiate with other Agents. AI Inference will become even more important with the growth of reasoning models and agents. Cloud robotics will become a reality and enter the enterprise. This will lead to shared services and data infrastructure spending, especially in the Manufacturing sector. The same design pattern will also be true for managing software multi agents in the enterprise. New technology and architecture will emerge to fuel the next gen models and multi-agent systems.
ARM will proliferate To overcome the memory wall, in-memory compute will get popular (similar to how Apple M4 style converged architectures with very high memory bandwidth).
Smart NICs will run entire storage controllers
Senior global and regional executives from Veeam share their views on top technology trends for 2025 in the Data Resilience space
In 2025, we’ll be waiting for the NIS2 hammer to fall
Andre Troskie, EMEA Field CISO, Veeam: “It almost goes without saying that leaders will continue to wrestle with regulation in 2025, especially with the arrival of DORA for the finance sector. However, next year’s biggest regulation story will be the first major NIS2 penalty. National regulators will give organizations time to become compliant – many countries have even extended their deadline – but expect to see the first big statement fine for noncompliance towards the end of next year.
Edwin Weijdema, EMEA Field CTO, Veeam: “Ransomware has been a consistent blight on businesses in recent years, but it has been fairly consistent at least. I believe this will change next year, with ransomware evolving beyond its current model. Expect to see more attacks using encryption as a distraction, while more sophisticated attacks target data integrity or siphon sensitive information. Ransomware incidents demand attention and resources, but this creates an opportunity for hidden threats to infiltrate deeper systems.”
“Equally concerning, we could see more and more attackers skip the encryption phase altogether, simply stealing data through exfiltration and then sending a ransom demand. While this doesn’t disrupt operations in the same way, it is much harder to detect and protect against. Often after a successful theft, only then will attackers encrypt data, to serve as a distraction to buy them time to sell what they’ve stolen.”
“Finally, what keeps me up at night is not the worry of data encryption or theft but of attackers injecting malicious code into a healthy data set to render it worthless all of a sudden. As organizations become increasingly data-driven, this could be dire, not least because it would be incredibly hard to detect. Data resilience must include multi-layered detection to identify concurrent threats and prevent hidden breaches”.
Michael Cade, Global Field CTO Cloud Strategy, Veeam: “As demand for storing and utilizing data grows, enterprise IT architecture will continue to evolve. Specifically, I expect the Cloud Data Lakehouse to become a popular choice next year – combining the scalability of a data lake with the more structured data management capabilities of a data warehouse. It addresses the demand for a unified data management approach while delivering the analytic capabilities that are gradually becoming non-negotiable for the modern enterprise.”
“As with most trends in the cloud space, cost and scalability are going to be key drivers. However, the pressure to be AI/ML-ready and compliant with evolving data regulations will be what moves the needle. By hook or by crook, enterprises will be working towards being more data-centric in 2025, so expect to hear the term Data Lakehouse more and more next year.”
Mena Migally, Regional VP – EMEA East, Veeam: “I think most organizations have moved on from just looking at their cybersecurity and now have broadened their scope to the wider concern of cyber resilience. Because of this, expect to see much more attention given to“Resilience Drills” next year. It’s not enough to just test your security. You must test how your organization responds and recovers “right of bang”.
“Much like fire drills, resilience drills will become a more regular practice next year, simulating ransomware and cyber threat scenarios to test and refine an organization’s data resilience measures. These exercises will involve both IT and executive teams to ensure rapid, coordinated response and seamless recovery. As threats grow more sophisticated, resilience drills will be essential for keeping data resilience strategies agile and effective.”
