WEEKENDS SUMMER HOLIDAYS 2014

LEISURE

Welcome! Welcome to our Summer Newsletter and whether you are a long standing member that has seen many of these in various guises or a newbie and this is your first reading you are all very welcome. Well here we go…my first ever introduction to a Spice Newsletter! Dave has now been booted ‘upstairs’ to become chairman so it has fallen to me to fill his not so small shoes! But don’t worry as founder, Dave will forever be a part of Spice and we’ll be wheeling him out occasionally with his sparkly jacket to do a quiz or host a holiday! In truth it’s not such a huge step; I’ve worked with Dave for over 9 years now so hopefully by now have inherited all the right bad habits! There is so much I want to tell you, and yet most of it is on a strict need to know basis so my hands are tied (grrrrr) – needless to say all the coordinators have been working on some big projects to improve your Spice experience which are due for fruition very soon. However, one big change you may already have noticed is a brand new Spice logo! It has taken a lot of deep meditation, cajoling and sometimes heated debate but we got there (eventually) and are really pleased with the result – hopefully you are too? Let us know what you think… The following pages are full of wonderful events – local, national and international – providing lots of opportunities to meet people, make friends and have fun on a daily basis with a superb bunch of like-minded friends. Page 9 onwards relate to your local Spice group but remember it is a rolling programme and new events are constantly being added some of which can be at very short

notice so don’t forget to keep an eye on the web for the most up to date information on everything available to you! If you have received this newsletter before you will notice that the colour (national) section of this edition is a little bigger to give us more space to tell you about some if the great National events we have coming up including the next two Center Parcs weekends in Longleat (October) and Whinfell (December) and National Christmas break in Leeds. Plus there is a special feature on possibly THE most Spicey holiday of them all – The Grand Canyon Rafting Experience. We have run this wonderful and unique holiday for over 20 years now and it is true to say that everyone who has been fortunate to experience it have said (to coin a much over used phrase) – it is a Life Changing Experience! June was the month we ran the Spice Selfie competition where you just needed to take a Selfie on a Spice event and load it up to your Facebook or Twitter account tagged with #spiceselfie – there was a weekly prize of £25 event vouchers for the best one! Have a look for the gallery that shows our entries, mine was on a Spice dog walk – not that I could win as staff were banned but we have included some great shots of them in action! So enjoy your summer (hope it’s a scorcher) and get yourself booked on lots of Spice events to make the most of it! See you on an event soon! Ian Purvis Spice UK

Member profiles Name: Helen Astbury Spice Group: West Midlands How long have you been a Spice member? Just over 6 years I think – time flies when you are having fun! Why did you join Spice I started dating my now fiancé who was (and still is) a member of Spice. After attending a few activities as his guest I wanted to become a member myself as there were loads of interesting events I wanted to do both with and without him! My close friend Andrea joined at the same time as I did as she too wanted to get out and live a more interesting life. What has been your favourite event? I love Wake Up The Zoo – an early morning trip around Dudley Zoo feeding some of the animals. The party nights and Christmas/Summer balls are also great fun and a chance to get dressed up in one way or another (since being in Spice I have grown quite a collection of ball gowns and fancy dress costumes!). What has been your most challenging event? Probably one of my very first – not because I was new to Spice, but because it was Fire Eating! What is your funniest memory in Spice? I’ve had loads of fun times with Spice! One of the most memorable was watching the rather abrupt end for both team in a tug-o-war when the rope snapped! What would be your advice for a new member? Get out there and enjoy it! Don’t think that because you are going to events as a new member you’ll know no one and everyone else will already know each other. I have been in Spice for years and do lots of events and yet I can guarantee on most I’ll only know a small number of other people on it. We are a friendly bunch and we’re all in the same situation, so don’t be afraid to just to up to someone, say hi, and ask what events they have got booked up or could recommend. Help is at hand if you don’t know where to start! The team in your local Spice office can suggest events that are ideal for new members (I recommend things like bowling, or new members mix and mingle), and when you are at an event many have a friendly volunteer coordinator on hand who will make sure you are introduced to other members, made to feel at home, and can chat to you about the best bits of Spice and suggest a few events based on your interests. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? No, although I’ve been tempted by several! I tend to holiday with my partner. He is a regular on the Spice ski/ snowboard trips though as he gets more annual leave than me and his friends so disappears off on 2 or 3 each season on both the local and national trips. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Thankfully not – although there is time yet! What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Get out there and enjoy it! Most treasured belonging? Other than my newly acquired engagement ring – probably my mobile phone! I organise what seems like my entire life with it and would be lost without my reminders, diary, calls, emails and texts from friends and regular facebook fix. Even my supermarket shopping list is on there

Name: Alan Flood Spice Group: Manchester

Name: Helen Dale Spice Group: Manchester How long have you been a Spice member? about 13 years Why did you join Spice

It was recommended by another member – and when I saw the newsletter there were lots of things I wanted to do. I haven’t looked back since. What has been your favourite event? Flying the Jet Provost aircraft – sadly no longer in the programme. I even took the controls and did a loop, a roll and circuit – lining it up for landing

How long have you been a Spice member? 5 years in September Why did you join Spice I was utterly bored with the same old routine of going down to the local to meet my mates. I wanted to be doing thinks and living life. Spice has delivered that for me and more! What has been your favourite event? Without a doubt my tandem skydive. What has been your most challenging event? When I took the hangover hobble too literally and turned up with a hangover from hell. Ouch! What is your funniest memory in Spice? I’ll go for my happiest event. It’s when I rocked up at the Center Parcs fancy dress party in my BA Baracus outfit with my fellow A-Team crew in our mock up A Team van. It felt like we were surrounded by paparazzi for well over an hour. I like a good fancy dress party!

What has been your most challenging event?

What would be your advice for a new member?

Fire-eating. I hadn’t really intended to do it at all but won a raffle at one of the new members evenings so felt obliged to go through with it.

Jump right in booking on a load of events. It’s a great way of getting to make friends quickly.

What is your funniest memory in Spice? Difficult to choose. Descending from a tree at the end of a series of zip wires on a strap (similar to car inertia seat belt) and being told to put my feet down – looking up and saying “what” as my bum hit the ground. What would be your advice for a new member? Dive in and do whatever appeals to you. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Let me think: Diving and Safari, Turkey, La Santa, Safari & Beach (again), Turkey Gullet, Antigua, Sailing in Malta, plus lots of weekends Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Having a conversation at a “When Venus and Mars collide” with 2 members from Stoke – when one turned said “we’ve had this conversation before”; “when was that?” I asked; when we shared a chalet at a party weekend. Oops – well we DO meet so many people through Spice! What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Face your Fears – Live your Dreams.

Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Yes – The Turkey chillout. It’s a very sociable event with a large number of people going. Many of them book on year after year as they love it so much. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Yes where should I start?... What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Can I have a paragraph?... Life is a bit like a maze. Someday you might just come out the other end having achieved all that you set out to do if you are lucky. But as I turn back from one dead end on my way to another I’ve come to realise that it’s far more important to enjoy the journey along the way and not to worry so much about where you are heading. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Including fictional characters? Nelson Mandela, Bear Grylls, Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall & Gandalf with Heston Blumenthal to be the chef! Your favourite movie?

Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party?

The Usual Suspects. I never saw that twist coming!

Ellen McArthur, Douglas Bader, April Ashley, Neil Armstrong

Most treasured belonging?

Your favourite movie?

My spice memories (cheesy I know)

The Italian Job (Original – obviously). Most treasured belonging? my photos.

It has a spectacular landscape with hundred-year-old giant redwoods that tower above forest glades of every shade of green. There is an elevated boardwalk that links the hilltop and the valley below while scenic cycle paths give views down to the lake. There is plenty to do at Center Parcs – in the valley there is the impressive Jardin des Sports (badminton, squash, golf simulator), with the Aqua Sana and Spa (sauna, herbal bath, ice room) nestled nearby. Up through the trees, you’ll come upon the classically French Village Square with its Grand Café (continental bar and brasserie) and La Sapinière (high standard of French and British cuisine), and an alpine-style Pancake House (traditional Dutch pancakes, cooked freshly to order on a special pancake griddle). The sub-tropical paradise (free entry) is the centre of attraction with crashing waves, exhilarating flumes, whirlpools and thrilling rapids. You can spend all day in the ‘dome’ which is tropically heated, or you can move outdoors - tennis, squash, sailing, bikes, canoeing, aerobics, roller skating, bowls, archery, falconry - the list is endless...(extra cost for these). There a few extra Spice Events too organised by your local Spice Group like our Welcome Drinks Reception, Badminton, Ten Pin bowling, etc, to provide some group get togethers during the weekend.

Our accommodation is in beautifully located villas surrounded by woodland and wildlife. Fully fitted bathroom and kitchens, lounge, television, central heating and even an open log fire. All bedding is provided, as is household equipment. Food is not included, so you can self-cater or eat out. Friday Night sees our private Welcome Drinks with your local group and Saturday night a Spice Themed Disco with a late Bar. The Saturday party fancy dress theme this visit is ‘To be advised soon’ - and adds a bit of Spice to the weekend, as well as making Spicers instantly recognisable! Deposits are £50 and non-refundable. Balance due 1st Sept, and no refund for cancellation - i.e. Villa stills has to be paid for - unless we replace you from a wait list (or you can resell your slot to a friend). Be back for midnight if you don’t want to miss out on our mulled wine and mince pies at the hotel! Christmas Day will comprise of a lazy breakfast, followed by Secret Santa in the morning and a bit of time to relax before we head up to the fabulous But & Aaron Suite on the 13th floor for our 3 course Christmas dinner – the But & Aaron Suite is a private largely glass walled penthouse room with fabulous views over the City Centre and beyond. In the evening we sit down to our 3 course meal in the City Café Restaurant followed by a cocktail making class with the hotel’s trained mixologist’s; expect bottle juggling and plenty of high spirits. Spice Yorkshire held their 2013 Christmas Party night in the Doubletree Leeds and the food was absolutely fabulous! On the final day you will enjoy a buffet breakfast before saying our goodbyes to both the hotel and our fellow Spicers. However subject to numbers there will be the option of a canal walk straight from the hotel in search of a local hostelry! Accommodation: The Doubletree by Hilton provides for a comfortable stay in contemporary surroundings. All bedrooms are air-conditioned and have Apple iMacs TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi access, Skype and an array of satellite & digital channels, a mini fridge and tea & coffee making facilities. There are two bars to relax in serving an array of drinks and of course we have our Spice exclusive breakout area in the mezzanine area of the hotel where we can relax, chat & generally socialise.

Grand Canyon Personal Reflections Dave Smith

“One of the best trips I

have ever done DIANNE, SPICE LONDON

A shiver went down my spine as I knew right there and then we HAD to go do it! Back in 1990, I took a coachload of Spicers to the UKs only IMAX cinema in Bradford, to see the newly released IMAX film “Grand Canyon”. It’s a spectacular film, and when the rafting sequence came on, a bunch of Spicers said sort it Dave and I’ll book it! So I did! These were the pre web days, so letters were fired off to the IMAX company in America asking who did the rafting in the film, and after a few weeks, an answer arrived and we got in touch with the Grand Canyon Expeditions Company, and booked our first Spice trip in 1992. That experience will live with me forever and has been a highlight of my life. And that’s saying something given some of the experiences I have had during my 33 years of running Spice. The trip works its magic on everyone who does it!

The adventure is like no other, quite impossible to capture and put into words. I think it’s something to do with the fact that it really is one of the world’s last great ‘journeys of adventure’. Once you cast off at Lees Ferry, before you lie 8 days and nights, 240 miles, and around 80 rapids to run. The scenery is simply awesome as the American’s would say, forever changing as each bend is taken, jaw dropping vistas of unimaginable scale. And the nights too – pitch black sky’s, glorious vistas of star-scopes like I have never seen – it’s hard to close your eyes it’s so awe inspiring. Most people get to visit the Canyon by coach and look from its rim down to the river which has carved the whole thing out over the millennium’s, they are lucky to spend an hour there. Some other fly over it for 20 mins. We get to live in it, and thus come to own it, and feel it with all our senses.

“Its one of the few places I

would return to time and time again. DOMINIC, Spice Thames Valley & SolentS

“Just do it, it’s awesome!!!!! You are at one with the world and make friends for life down there. LAUREN, SPICE MANCHESTER

“It’s an incredible

wilderness experience RICHARD, SPICE WEST MIDLANDS

“The trip works its magic

on everyone who does it! DAVE, SPICE UK

The rafts are safe, big, motorised, and could never tip up. The eccentric boatmen are really special people who take on a god like status as they guide you through the rapids, cook you delicious meals, tell you river stories, explain the geology and archaeology, and show you the canyons secret treasures. You are not just sat on the raft all day but many stops to see the various sites, small hikes to fascinating places, like a gorgeous view or some old Havasu native American’s remains, or a natural phenomenon like the massive Red Wall cave. If you are lucky, you will experience the side canyons of the Little Colorado and Havasue Canyon, both beautiful azure coloured warm healing water from distant springs, sacred places in Indian culture. If there’s been rain, it turns thick brown colour like a chocolate river. The rapids are fun and vary in size, with romantic names like Badger Creek, Nonkoweap Rapid, Sockdolager, Hermit and the massive Lava. Each has a story and history, and you follow in the footsteps of that first recorded pionerring expedition of Major John Wesley Powell in 1869. So many marvellous experiences never to be forgotten. You have a natural ‘bonding’ and you make friends for life on this trip it is very hard not to. The daily ‘line’ to load and unload the boat, hanging

on to each other as you bounce through the rapids, taking care of each other through, walking in the river together, and of course, lots of chat about the meaning of life. So yes, it costs a lot but I cannot stress that the experience you have is absolutely priceless. Only 100 people a day get issued permits through short season (you do not to see many people along the way, and certainly no sign that anyone has been at the beaches where you camp each night – they are meticulous in their ‘leave no trace’ philosophy). We have to book 2 years in advance to secure our Spice raft! Over 500 Spicers have had the privilege over the years, and we all feel we share something really special. I guess it’s a bit like going to the top of Everest or even stepping on the moon, so relatively few have done it. I loved it so much I was lucky enough to go back in 2000 and 2012 leading the Spice trips, and would go back in a heartbeat. Apparently the National parks are trying to stop ‘motorised’ boats running the Canyon, which will be a sad day as it will exclude all but the most skilled rafters and kyakers, so if this strikes a chord and you know in your bones you HAVE to do it – don’t delay while you have the opportunity.

Coordinator’s Corner Here it is, our first newsletter with the new logo revealed! We know by now it is hard to please everyone but we have been hearing for so long that it was dated that we have gone for a new modern look, we hope you like it, we certainly do! This is also the first newsletter with a more ‘National’ feel, we all voted for the new look which includes lots more colour pages however it does mean that the events content has been restricted. As ever the newsletter is an overview of what we have coming up, it doesn’t contain everything we have on event wise and you shouldn’t book based on the contents of the write ups – the full information is on the event listing on our website. We understand not everyone has access to the web but you can call the office and we can post out full details of any events you are interested in or talk you through them. We have plenty of great events coming up which includes all our regular favourites plus some new ones too. We are pleased to have Flyboarding back in the programme – it is great fun but hard work, plus plenty of other water sports with surfing, water-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking all in this newsletter. Plus we have a selection of hopefully drier summer sports including cricket, rounders and croquet. If you don’t enjoy the sport, there are plenty of other chances to get outdoors with rambles, outdoor theatre, races, boat trips, train rides, and a garden party. We also have some great weekends away coming up including The National Dragon Boat Weekend and the Masham Beer and BBQ Weekend. There are some great barn weekends too, some of which are already full but we have places on Swarthghyll Farm and a little later in the year on our Winter Warmer Bonfire Weekend at Stainforth. We also have a new apprentice in the office, Rachel, who we will hopefully have out and about on events soon – it is Rachel’s first job so please do bear with her as we train her up on all things Spice!!! A few dates for your diary as people have already been asking about Christmas & New Year (yes really!). The Spice National Festive Break as featured in the colour pages, 24th – 27th December at the fabulous Doubletree Hotel by Hilton, Leeds. We’ll have details of our Christmas and New Year parties on the website soon, but before that we’ve had a few requests for another Ceilidh Night so we’ve booked that for October (see page 36) and have included a pie and pea supper this time.

Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. I know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time I am on an event, come up and say hello so I can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 5pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)

Brooklyn Bar is on Call Lane, between the entrance to Queens Court and the railway bridge. Disabled access is through the side entrance from Queens Court. The nearest outdoor parking is opposite the Adelphi pub unless you get very lucky and get a space just outside the venue. Indoor car parking is along behind Chaophraya or upstairs from Bibis Italian. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs and then join us upstairs?

The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.

The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibilities are to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on SatNav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! http://www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Gyrocopter Flight

Dinghy Sailing Intro

The motorbike of the skies

Come and try your hand at sailing

Date: Saturday 19th July 2014 Place: Rufforth airfield, York # (YO23 3QA) Cost: £99 Member, £109 Guest

Date: Place: Meet: Time: Cost:

We’re proud to offer a Gyrocopter Experience in Yorkshire as we take to the skies with Instructor Phil Harwood on a trial Gyrocopter flight. James Bond has one called little Nellie (in the film You Only Live Twice), Mad Max gets rescued in one (in Mad Max 2) & even the cows have one (in the butter advert)! Now it’s your turn to have a go. At the moment there are less than 100 gyro pilots (or Gyronauts) in the UK & they mainly fly kitbuilt single seat machines. Now with the introduction of new factorybuilt 2 seat gyrocopters these fascinating machines are taking the UK by storm. A gyrocopter is like a helicopter except it does not have the engine connected to the rotors – they freewheel (or autorotate) in flight. It is a very exciting flying experience as you generally fly at just 600ft above the ground so you can see all that’s happening below. It’s very manoeuvrable & can turn steeply & tightly & as it’s out in the open you get that ’wind in your hair’ feeling. You will be able to experience the thrill of a flight in a gyrocopter where all the special characteristics of this type of flying will be demonstrated to you. You will also be given the chance to take the controls & fly this ‘motorbike of the sky’ yourself. It’s important that all gyronauts arrive at 10am for an important safety briefing & then you will take it in turns to fly. There will be some waiting around but you can watch your fellow gyronauts take to the skies. Your time slot is approx 25mins although expect the whole session with briefing to last up to four hours depending on numbers booked. There is a full hangar of gyros, a showroom, shop, offices, mini museum along with a small cinema. We start the event with a tour of the hangar and mini museum, along with an introduction to gyros and how they fly as well as the important safety brief. Whilst there you will get to see our video Top Gear for Gyros in the small cinema.

Sunday 20th July 2014 Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Reception area 2:15pm to 4pm £29.50 Member, £32.50 Guest

If you’ve never tried sailing, here’s your chance. This session is aimed at total beginners and offers a chance for even the most dedicated landlubber to enjoy the exhilaration and satisfaction of utilising the natural power of the elements to propel yourself across water. Our one and a half hour session will commence with a short safety talk, and a general not-too-technical overview of dingy sailing. The ‘chat’ will be kept to an absolute minimum; the emphasis will be on getting out there and having a go. Forget all those horror stories about having to jump out and capsizing the boat, this is a fun session not a frightener! It really is close supervision; the instructor will be in the boat with three students. Come on and give it a try! Who knows this may be your first step towards a solo circumnavigation of the globe. Please bring a change of clothing (just in case) and a waterproof jacket, footwear should be pumps or light trainers that you do not mind getting wet. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Remember that this event is wind dependent!

Tank Battle Experience .. challenge your fellow teams to a tank paintball battle!

Date: Place: Time: Cost: Host:

Sunday 20th July 2014 Lutterworth, Leicestershire # (LE17 6NW) 9:45am to 12pm £95 Member, £99 Guest Spice West Midlands

This event has had great feedback. We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout (so no waiting around on this one!) We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through its paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns. For this part, teams will not be able to switch positions, so you will need to decide between you or toss a coin to decide who will drive, who will load and who will fire.

Mobile phones If we have your mobile phone number we can contact you by text or phone if there is a late change to an event for any reason. Just give us a ring with your number and we’ll update your details or you can check and update these online at www.spiceyorks.com. Don’t forget to let us know if you change your number.

Clarence House and Garden Guided Tour 1 Former home of the Queen Mother This is an unbelievable new event! You may have seen it on The One Show, BBC News or Blue Peter (if not click the links at www.zipworld.co.uk to watch them via YouTube!) So why should you travel to Wales for this one? Well, Zip World has the longest zip line in Europe and is claimed to be “the nearest thing to flying like Superman”. The Zip World site contains two specially constructed and spectacular zip lines, the first will take you down to the bottom of the quarry where you will pick up your specialised vehicle for a magnificent quarry tour, before zip lining back (one mile!) to the start. You will be going at speeds of around 100mph and you will be travelling 500ft above the mountain lake so be ready for a ride of a lifetime! How does our afternoon work: We will meet up for briefing and for kitting up with flying suits, helmets and goggles. We then get to experience “Little Zipper”, a mere 500 meters of fun that will whet our appetites for what is to come. At the base of “Little Zipper” we join our trucks (15 per truck) that take us on a guided tour of the quarry, ending at the very top. This is an exciting trip, using vertiginous quarry tracks from the days when hundreds of men worked quarried slate at Penrhyn. The views are dramatic. We eventually reach the summit and the mighty “Big Zipper”. This we descend one after another at approx 2 minute intervals. Be prepared to be terrified, invigorated and awed .. all at the same time!

Sunday 3rd August 2014 from 1pm to 3:30pm Scarborough # (YO11 2HD) Spa Complex £29 Member, £32 Guest Steve Crawford on 07891 094976

Today we are guest of Fluid Concept. Fluid Concept Surfboards has been around since 1998. They began as 2 shapers designing & creating boards out of a pure love of surfing, and have evolved the business into what exists today adding the website, then the surf shop and with that came the surf hire & also BSA registered surf lessons. Today we try a Beginner surf lesson. This lesson is aimed at first timers. We'll teach you basic water and beach safety, how to carry and use your surfboard safely, paddling your board and catching a wave, a good warm up routine and of course how to stand on your board (easier said than done). The lessons we offer at the surf school are all 2 hours long but we ask you to arrive about 30 minutes before your lesson starts so you have time to change and pick up your equipment. After the lesson we set aside some time for a chat and feedback or on any surf related subject you like. We have changing facilities at the shop and a nice hot kettle for the essential post surf cuppa, but please note there are no showers. Surfing is a fantastic sport and with a bit of persistence quite easy to learn. All you need is a reasonably good sense of balance and be able to swim 50 metres in a pool. The team of instructors are picked from the cream of Yorkshire's East Coast Surfers.

Another of Mark's brilliant events that are aimed at those who really want to conquer a challenging outdoor pursuit, but feel the need for some extra 'loving care' and patience to help them meet their ambition. This day is an ideal introduction in an interesting cave system, but one where you have the peace of mind of knowing that you could quickly be brought to the surface if the experience proves too much! So if you've always been a bit wary of taking your first trip underground then this is the event for you. Grade: Easy Medical Note: If you have any medical conditions that could prevent you taking part in this adventure activity, please contact your doctor in advance to check. If you are unsure, please contact the instructor, Mark Fenton directly on 07798 790766 or your Spice office.

This was a very popular ride the last time we rode it. We will be starting from Hassop Station on the disused section of the main London-Manchester Midland Railway Line between Bakewell and Buxton which is now the Monsal Trail. After a short ride along the trail to get our legs spinning we will head up and over Longstone Edge to Eyam. We then meander along tracks and lanes to Tideswell where we will stop for a bite of lunch. But don’t worry there is still plenty of riding to be done as we head to Millers Dale and the beautiful Wye Valley. If you go down there has to be an up; so we climb to King Sterndale to follow the Priest’s way and the beautiful Horseshoe Dale. We then ride to Priestfield for the final 10 km off road section back to Hassop station and a well-earned cake and a cuppa in the cafe. A great day out in some of the most beautiful and scenic areas of the Peaks, with the added bonus of some great mountain biking. Grade: 2; Distance: 28 miles on some of the central Peaks classic tracks and Trails.

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Tonight Spice dines around the world visits the Thai Sakon Restaurant which provides the finest, genuinely authentic Thai cuisine in relaxed and friendly surroundings. All dishes are prepared from the very best ingredients, including fresh herbs, spices and exotic vegetables delivered every week from growers in Thailand. Some things to note: Thai food is often hot and spicy, although it can be tempered for the western palate. The basic seasonings are basil, lemon grass, garlic, coriander, cumin, coconut milk and lime, with a variety of other spices, including, of course, the chilli. The mainstay of a Thai meal is steamed Jasmine rice. Fried rice is not a traditional Thai choice, but is more popular in the west and a selection is included Chopsticks are not used in Thailand, except when eating particular noodle dishes. In ancient Siam, food was eaten with the hands, but a fork and spoon are now used.

After our safety briefing we will be paddling serenely along this picturesque waterway taking in the lovely lush countryside until we find somewhere suitable for lunch. Please bring a packed lunch with you however we do plan to find a canalside hostelry to take our lunch break in prior to setting off back to the start point for around 4pm. Although we are only gently paddling a decent level of fitness is required to complete a full day on the water. Please bring a change of clothes; obviously the plan is to stay dry within the canoe but it is better to be safe than sorry!

Mid week treat at 31 Castlegate

Knife and Tomahawk Throwing Day

Date: Wednesday 24th September 2014 at 7:15pm Place: 31 Castlegate, York (YO1 9RN) Cost: £18 Member, £20 Guest Includes: starter and main Extras: dessert and drinks

Date: Place: Meet: Time: Cost:

Located in the centre of York, under the shadow of the imposing Clifford’s Tower, 31 Castlegate is one of York’s great restaurants offering contemporary Modern European cuisine in an extraordinarily charming atmosphere. Housed in the former home of a Georgian architect with impressive period features and décor throughout, the restaurant specialises in producing outstanding quality food, using only the finest local produce with everything cooked fresh by Chef Patron, Nick Julius.

Today we join the Knife, Axe and Tomahawk Throwing Association for an introduction to the art of knife throwing. This will involve throwing axes and knives. We have lots of throwing knives, tomahawks and axes that you can use. We will show you the different throwing techniques and things to throw, though of course safety is the first consideration. There are no refreshment facilities at our 15 lane throwing area so please bring your own food and drink. You must wear sensible footwear - absolutely no pumps or open toed sandals. We have a six hour session but this will include downtime to discuss throwing techniques, meal times and break times as people get tired. Location: We meet at the throwing area right next door to the Paintball Commando Site near the intersection of the M62 and A1(M).

U40 v O40: Killer Pool (Sheffield) A new twist on this popular game

Date: Place: Meet: Time: Cost:

Wednesday 24th September 2014 at 7:45pm 127-129 Devonshire Street, Sheffield (S3 7SB) First Floor of The Common Room 7:45pm £5 Member, £6 Guest

Killer Pool is a good way of keeping everyone involved. It is to a large extent a game of chance and is intended to level out skill differences somewhat. Each player's name will be picked out at random and written down. At the side of each name tally marks will be written down. These marks will represent your lifelines. The balls will be racked up and the player whose name is at the top of the list breaks the balls from anywhere behind the baulk line. If nothing goes in on the break shot the player does not lose a life but gets another shot, on which they do have to pot a ball. On each shot if nothing is potted, or if the white goes down or leaves the table the player loses a life (except on break shots). A lifeline will be wiped off from the side of their name. Whenever the white ball is potted the next player must play their shot anywhere from behind the baulk line. When the last ball is potted the balls will be re-racked and we start all over again. We have the table booked for 2 hours. The winning team will be the ones who have won the most games throughout the night.

Swarthghyll Farm BBQ Weekend A superb barn weekend with Sat eve BBQ party

Date: Fri 8th Aug 2014 - Sun 10th Aug 2014 Place: Nr Buckden, Yorkshire Dales # (BD23 5JS) Meet: Swarthghyll Farm, Oughtershaw Cost: £69 Member, £79 Guest (Deposit £10) Includes: Walk Leader, Cooked Breakfast Host: Lauren on 07852 366055 Following on from our hugely popular barn weekends for 2014 here is another great value and fun one. The barn weekends are always popular & need no introductions, however, if you’re one of our recent new members and you like the outdoors then this really is a great weekend to book. Bunk barns are very civilised – no hay on the floor here! They are similar accommodation to self-catering hostels. Included in the weekend is a cooked breakfast Saturday and breakfast Sunday, but remember you will be expected to muck in and help with either cooking or cleaning. Swarthghyll Farm and Outdoor Centre is a working thousand acre sheep farm set in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales. It caters for the needs of walkers & outdoor activity groups. Swarthghyll bunk house is a beautifully renovated barn and is conveniently located in the North Yorkshire Dales, 5 miles/8 kilometres from Hawes, where there are a large number of Public Houses, Restaurants and Tea Rooms. Straddling the Dales Way in Upper Wharfedale, Swarthghyll is within easy reach of the Lake District, the Pennine Way and North Yorkshire Moors. There are also a number of interesting visitor attractions such as a working rope maker, the Dales Countryside Museum and Wallace and Gromit's favourite cheese factory where you can buy the world famous Wensleydale Cheese. The farm is situated on the Dales Way in fact, running straight through the middle of the farm. There are six bunk rooms giving a total of 40 comfortable bunk beds. There is washing and drying facilities for clothes, separate male female showers and toilet facilities, a large self catering kitchen and dinning area. This is well equipped with gas cookers, toaster, microwave, dishwasher, crockery, glassware and cutlery, cooking utensils, dishcloths, sponges and tea towels are provided. There is a large and spacious common room with satellite television and video. There's also a large games room with table football table, games and table tennis, also a payphone. The barn has full central heating throughout and there is ample car parking for all. There’ll be the usual mixture of walks and tea shop trips happening as well as other activities. There is decking over the stream that runs through the gill, with a large seating area, gas heater which lends itself to parties so we'll put some music on and have a little fun. Bring your own buffet and meat to cook and on the Saturday evening we will have a communal BBQ and buffet. The centre is quite a way from a pub so please also bring food to cook on Friday or grab something on your way. We’ll have plenty of nibbles available to keep you topped up. As usual with our weekend breaks, we will be arranging a programme of outdoor walks/ for the weekend. There’ll also be the usual mixture of sightseeing trips happening, or you may wish to explore under your own steam. Whatever you decide, this will still be a great weekend away! The great thing about these weekends is that you don’t have to go home after a long day in the countryside. If you’ve never been on a barn weekend before give it a go you’ll need a week to recover but everyone agrees it’s worth it. You need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. Cooked Breakfast is included in the weekend. Full joining pack will follow to all participants one week prior. 38

Following on from the hugely popular Timberlodges & Kirkby Stephen weekends I thought we’d sneak in another cheap & cheerful one. I was really pleased to discover an old Spice Favourite Hornby Laithe was free for the bonfire weekend plus Neil the owner will build a big bonfire ready for our arrival & has no problem with us having a bonfire party! The barn weekends are always popular & need no introductions, however, if you’re one of our recent new members and you like the outdoors then this really is a great weekend to book. It does sell really, really quickly so get those bookings in ASAP so you’re not disappointed. Bunk barns are very civilised – no hay on the floor here! They are similar accommodation to self-catering youth hostels. Hornby Laithe Bunkhouse Barn is simple, yet comfortable accommodation in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Converted from original farm buildings, the Bunkhouse occupies a secluded position within easy walking distance of both Stainforth and Settle. It is an ideal base for walkers, or groups wishing to explore this area of outstanding natural beauty. The walking is superb, offering a wide variety for both the seasoned walker or climber and those wishing to explore the countryside at a leisurely stroll. Stainforth is a pretty village which nestles into the side of a fell, with a beck (crossed via stepping stones), a green and a traditional Dales pub, all worth seeing. Settle (five minutes’ drive), is a lovely, traditional market town, with shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as a golf course and swimming pool. Local places of interest include Stainforth Foss, a picturesque waterfall on the river Ribble, just a walk across the fields from the barn, where the salmon leap on their journey upstream to spawn. The rooms are a mixture of sizes with a couple of twins (primarily allocated to couples and now fully booked), but mainly dormitory style ones with bunk beds. You need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. Cooked Breakfast is included in the weekend. There’ll be the usual mixture of walks and tea shop trips happening as well as other activities. On Friday evening we can get a meal at the pub (not included) and then have a party in the barn. On Saturday we’ll have our big bonfire party – we’ll provide the fire (& matches!!) & put an a big pot of chilli & potatoes or rice (veg chilli also provided) you just need to bring an odd tipple or two & your sparklers! The great thing about these weekends is that you don’t have to go home after a long day in the countryside. If you’ve never been on a barn weekend before give it a go you’ll need a week to recover but everyone agrees it’s worth it. If you have been before you’ll know how popular it is. It always sells out so get those booking forms in quick if you want to join us. Full joining pack will follow to all participants one week prior.

Extras: Travel insurance (compulsory), ski/boot hire, lift passes, ski school, lunch & extra drinks/snacks, ski carriage £29 if using own skis. Other prices to be confirmed; Please note that Ski Olympic charge a surcharge of £25 for Gluten Free & Low Fat Dietary requirements! For our first combined Manchester & Yorkshire ski trip we are venturing to the slopes in the very popular resort of Vallandry / Les Arcs in France. We have been to this resort before (many years ago) and with it being a ski in and ski out resort it is likely to be a popular trip and definitely worth another visit. Vallandry is one of six separate villages making up Les Arcs, one of France’s renowned ski resorts. The diversity of these villages ranges from Villaroger, a huddle of ancient farm buildings, to the purpose built Arc 2000, with its modern high rise hotels and apartments. Vallandry sits amongst the trees on a sunny plateau and is made of chalets built from local wood and stone. The centre, which is about 400m along the piste from our Chalet Hotel La Foret, has a lively charm and an assortment of shops, bars and restaurants. There is also a ski school and cinema. The skiing is as diverse as the villages themselves. From the steep bowls around Arc 2000, to the wide pistes of 1600, and the tree lined slopes running down to Vallandry, there is skiing to suit everyone’s requirements. The skiing tops out at the peak of the Aiguille Rouges, just over 2 miles above sea level from where some fantastic pistes descend to Arc 2000 and right down to Villaroger at 1200m. There is a cable car link between Les Arcs and La Plagne, creating the huge new ski area known as Paradiski and this effectively doubles the amount of skiing available. The Hotel. La Foret is finished to a high standard to give comfortable communal areas and large bedrooms. The lounge is dressed in warm, deep colours, with sofas and chairs gathered around coffee tables and a large log fire to add an extra glow to the room. Adjoining is the dining room where circular tables allow all guests to sit down together to enjoy fabulous evening meals. All bedrooms are en-suite and rooms vary in size, views, balconies and are allocated on a pot luck basis. There is a large south-west facing terrace which is fantastic place to sit and relax with a drink on your return from skiing to watch the snow- capped peaks opposite turn red with the last of the day’s sunshine. Our meals include buffet breakfast, afternoon tea with cakes and 3 course dinner with complimentary wine. The Tour Operator is Ski Olympic (ATOL 2508) for whom we act as Agents. This holiday is protected by the Civil Aviation Authority under the ATOL scheme in the event of failure of the tour operator. Our annual Christmas ski offering Enjoy Christmas day on the slopes

The neighboring resorts of Les Arcs and La Plagne are quintessential examples of the so called “third generation” of modern, high altitude French resorts which burst upon the skiing scene in the early 1960s. Les Arcs offers a wealth of skiing with some exceptional off-piste opportunities. It was considerably more difficult to link these iconic resorts to form ‘Paradiski’ that it was to link Val d’Isère and Tignes: a deep valley divides the neighbouring resorts. Ten years ago, having used enough steel and concrete to build a second Eiffel Tower, a pair of sleek and fast double-decker cable-cars, operating independently of each other, began ferrying skiers two kilometres across the Ponthurin valley between Plan-Peisey (on the Les Arcs side) and a point just above Montchavin in the La Plagne ski network.

SKI NEW YEAR

8 days, Sat 27 Dec 2014 from £999 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester

Always a popular holiday Chosen after great feedback from last season

Skiing holidays in Alpe d’Huez offer a high sunny plateau surrounded by an amazing snow bowl, with mile after mile of varied pisted and off piste opportunities. From challenging black runs to wide open blues and greens, the 249km of skiing is spread over a huge area, providing endless opportunities for all levels of skier and boarder. Alpe d’Huez boast excellent snow records due to the high altitude, the Sarenne Glacier and over 800 snow cannons. The Pique Blanc summit at 3300m affords breathtaking views across the whole of the Southern Alps and provides a wonderful starting point for the Sarenne descent - one of the longest black runs in the world at fully 16km from top to bottom! Alpe d’Huez is ideal for snowboarders too, providing 2 well maintained snow parks and plenty of boarder friendly cable-cars and chair lifts.

SKI CORMAYEUR – SOLO WEEK 8 days, Sun 11 Jan 15 from £669 Departs London Gatwick only

• •

20+ sole occupancy rooms at no supplement Limited twin share rooms at a £100 discount

Not quite a completely sole occupancy week but almost. We have exclusive use of this chalet for a group of just 29 and we have 23 sole occupancy/single rooms available! Lovely and leisurely with great snow, varied terrain, fabulous scenery and plenty of time for lunch, Courmayeur takes a very Italian approach to skiing. It has an excellent snow record, backed up with a very impressive snow-making system and a very efficient lift system, including a new gondola and a fast four man chairlift. The ski area has a varied selection of easy and intermediate runs liberally sprinkled with welcoming huts, each with its own panoramic sundeck and spectacular view. At the top of the cable car is the nursery area for beginners. For stronger skiers the possibilities are endless, with famous off-piste runs such as the Vallee Blanche into Chamonix, the Toula Glacier in the shadow of Mont Blanc and access to some of the best value heli-skiing in Europe (with a mountain guide). The Vallee Blanche descent into Chamonix is outstanding and one that you’ll never forget.

SKI ITALY - CORTINA 8 days, Sat 31 Jan 15 from £669

The most fashionable ski resort in Italy Great skiing in stunning scenery

Cortina is one of the most filmed, photographed, skied and visited resorts in the Italian Alps. Set to the east of the Sella Ronda circuit, it is called the ‘Queen of the Dolomites’ and is renowned for the excellent selection of skiing as well as superb accommodation, bars, restaurants and shopping. The main skiing areas are the Cortina Cube (Crystal, Faloria and Mietres), Tofana, and Lagazuoi-5 Torri, with plenty of challenging runs as well as some of the most amazing views. All the areas are either linked by the great network of lifts or local skis buses. The Tofanas Ski Area’s accolade is the famous women’s downhill world cup run.
