SUMMER 2017

So I don’t know about you but where have the last 6 months gone? The year is flying by and with temperatures rising and the days getting longer there’s so much more time and opportunity to make the most of

Dianne Livingstone Spice London

your Life with Spice! It has been a tough last couple of months in the UK and here at Spice we want to send out heartfelt best wishes to everyone who may have been affected by the events in Manchester and London recently…but as with the rest of the UK we can’t let ourselves be

Kathryn Buttle Spice Thames Valley & Solent

dictated to by these recent acts and sincerely hope that you will get out with us doing what Spicers’ do best – living life to the full! Over the coming pages you’ll find some interesting articles (hopefully) with each of the Spice groups having a short focus section for them to update everyone on what they have and are

doing. There is also an update on Spice UK holidays following the recent holiday survey we conducted – thanks to everyone who took the time to complete this and big congratulations to Spice Thames Valley Debbie Clements who won the Marrakech weekend break just for filling it in! The survey

Lauren Fawkes Spice Manchester

has thrown up some interesting and varied topics for us to ponder and the first of some of our new trips are almost ready for release - they shown in the holiday grid later on as a little teaser! Whatever your interests the Spice programme keeps

delivering and I hope to see as many of you as possible over the summer. So get booking and give yourself something’s to look forward to over the next few

months.

Name: Alison Wheat Which Group are you a member of? West Midlands How long have you been a Spice member? 3 years Why did you join Spice? To get myself out of the rut I’d found myself in and take up new challenges. What has been your favourite event? Too many to mention and so diverse. That’s what’s so good about spice. What has been your most challenging event? Hiking through the Forest of Dean in the middle of the night and finding a cave to sleep in. The view in the morning was so worth it! What is your funniest memory in Spice? Driving home from meeting the owls at Bosworth on a misty Halloween evening with two fellow Spice members

Name: Joanne Mallinder Which Group are you a member of? West Midlands How long have you been a Spice member? For about 5 years with a one year break Why did you join Spice? I joined Spice when I went through a difficult time with a marriage breakdown, and my son left for University in Plymouth What has been your favourite event? That is a difficult one as I mix them up. I love Dance classes with Sheena, Craft classes with Kerrie at ‘Living in Loveliness’ but also the walking. Probably Long Weekend in Windemere as it was November and there was SNOW!

Name: Wade Murphy Which Group are you a member of? Spice Manchester How long have you been a Spice member? About sixteen years Why did you join Spice? I first joined Spice because I liked the look of the activities they had to offer.. What has been your favourite event? My favourite events are numerous but include outdoor activities, creative writing, also social events with music and dancing etc. What has been your most challenging event? My most challenging event was probably Dragon boat racing as I was competing for two teams on the same day! What is your funniest memory in Spice? My funniest memory in Spice was on a ski holiday in

who failed to point out that I’d taken a wrong turning even though signposted. After a few more miles – we all realised I’d driven back to the venue! Ground hog day moment that I’ve never been allowed to forget. What would be your advice for a new member? Book on one or two events straightaway and when you turn up put a smile on your face, introduce yourself to someone – and the adventure begins! We’ve all been to a ‘first’ event! Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Not yet, but booked to go to Lapland in December. And I’m so excited. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? My lack of sense of direction never fails to embarrass me! Embarrassing moments make you human. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. You only regret what you haven’t done – not what you have done!

What has been your most challenging event? The dance classes as I am shy and Sheena used me as her demonstration partner. However, I am booked on a Canadian ccanoeing that may replace this. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Segway assault course just made us all laugh so much that we were like children on our Scooters again. What would be your advice for a new member? Try everything once. I had no idea I could craft and I am obsessed with it now. Go to the social events, its not as scary as you think you will always meet someone like yourself. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Long Weekend in Lake Windemere, really enjoyed it. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? LOL Not yet but am sure it is coming... What is your life philosophy in one sentence. You only get one life, so live it for yourself and not for others.

France when I lead my ski group onto the runway of the mountain airport thinking it was a piste! What would be your advice for a new member? My advice for a new member would be to chose an event that you know you would enjoy. Then just take it from there. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Yes I have been on many Spice holidays mainly walking and skiing. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? I have had one or two embarrassing moments which include Leading my ski group onto the runway of the mountain airport in France! What is your life philosophy in one sentence? We all have an inner child inside which should be released whenever possible!

FOCUS ON EAST MIDLANDS The two stand out areas that East Midlands excels at are walks/rambles and weekends away. We have a regular Sunday walk in the Peak District which can attract as many as 40 walkers. We vary the terrain, the area of the Peak District and distance so we cater for all abilities. We also have more regional walks at weekends and evenings.

FOCUS ON MANCHESTER

We also run a regular programme of Weekend Breaks planned and led by Steve Dell which go into the National programme. These can be split into two main categories – Walking and Social. Members love our weekends as virtually everything is planned for them; they just book, turn up and enjoy themselves!

In Manchester we strive to bring a mixed programme of events to suit all budgets and meet the needs of the members whilst strongly holding on to the ethos of giving back at the same time.

Walking: our walking weekends are the more social walking weekends, usually with social activities in the evening, such as quizzes. The walks are up to 11 miles but many of the walks have a shorter or longer option using either a figure of eight or using public transport or maybe a heritage train. So far this year we have been to Ironbridge Gorge, the Peak District, Bournemouth and Jersey. Future walking weekends planned are Staffordshire Moorlands, Shropshire, Elan Valley, Cotswolds and Cardiff / South Wales Valleys at New Year. Social: These are generally City Breaks. We plan the weekend and put a coordinated programme of activities (tourist attractions) which members can do all of or just dip in and out. Previous social weekends have included Chester, Portsmouth, Dublin, London, Jersey and future weekends planned are Liverpool, York and Cardiff at New Year.

There is nothing better than providing a great event to benefit our members whilst at the same time helping the local community, businesses and nominated charities where possible. We are very proud to have some great suppliers who give their time freely and put together lovely events for us and the whole fee for these goes to their nominated charities such as Cancer Research (Cake & Bake Club), MacMillan Nurses (Creative Writing & Conversational French, TLC – Teenage Life Control Counselling (Life Lessons and Neuro Linguistic Programming), Prostate Cancer Care (Meditation Evenings) as well as events like Charity Dog Walks or visiting animal sanctuaries with fees directly benefiting charities. That having been said, we do move further afield and currently our most popular sell out event is our now annual Jacobean Mansion Party Weekend which sold out 100 places in a week and our great Anglesey breaks very close to the sea. We are also known for our annual festive break over Christmas staying at nice hotels and enjoying each other’s company – details to come soon of our lovely Spa break in Chester over Christmas! Lauren particularly likes hosting the hostel style weekends which she does for both Spice Manchester & Yorkshire, leading walks, outdoor events and any events involving animals, so horse riding, dog walks etc. John can be found in the main on meals (he likes his food), leading easy walks that include food (of course) and teaching poker amongst other things! If you do have any questions about the events, membership or the holidays please don’t hesitate to give the office a call and we will do our upmost to assist!

FOCUS ON LONDON Spice London offers a wide range of events both in Central London and the South East. We have already had some great weekends this year such as our Potters Resort weekend in Norfolk, a Narrowboat cruise, Cycling and Bunk Barn weekends. Then coming up over the summer months we have some fabulous weekends such as Surfing in Croyde Bay, National Stud Tour of Newmarket, Badminton Weekend, Sizzling Summer BBQ on the Thames, Cambridge Punting and Picnic and our Legendary Ascot Races and Live Concert weekend with already over 60 bookings! With over 100 events per month the choice is yours whether you want to chill out with other Spice members for an Alfresco Dinner and a glass of Prosecco by the Thames or Climb over the O2 Arena, you choose. We regularly visit the highlights of London such as Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Houses of Parliament and other top tourist attractions. Or if you like the Arts we have tickets for the top London West End Shows as well as Opera and Ballet at the Royal Opera House and Exhibitions at Galleries and Museums. We also have behind the scenes events and guided walks and tours of London. If you just want to get away from it all and take in the countryside we have some lovely walks and days out in fantastic areas of Outstanding National Beauty such as the Surrey Hills, Kent and Sussex Downs and the High Weald and the Chiltern Hills. Christmas and New Year are always a special time for Spice London and again this year we have hired our Spice Exclusive Boat for our New Year’s Eve Party Cruise on the Thames where at midnight we moor up close to Big Ben to hear the stroke of Midnight and watch the Fireworks light up the sky over the Thames. A fantastic sight. To make a weekend of it, there is the option to stay one or two nights at the Luxury Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington. Or you can get into the Christmas spirit with our Festive Luxury Weekend at Potters 5 star Resort in Norfolk with Live Entertainment and a range of activities such as have segway, Karting, air rifle shooting, archery, pitch n putt, badminton, and table tennis. The weekend includes all your meals so all you need to do is buy your drinks! Spice London have so many fun events to choose from each month, simply just book, turn up, meet new friends and have fun.

FOCUS ON SOUTH WEST & SOUTH WALES I think I am really lucky with the area that Spice South West & South Wales covers – from Cornwall up to Gloucester and across the South of Wales. There are so many beautiful places to have weekends away. So far this year we have stayed in hostels in Cornwall and Cheddar Gorge and we have Cardigan Bay, the Gower and Dartmoor to look forward to. We also have two hotel trips to Bristol, for the Harbour Festival and the Balloon Fiesta. My favourite trip though is the Balloon Fiesta. Taking place every year over three days, sitting in a field at 6 o’clock in the morning while watching over 100 balloons ascend and fly over-head at the same time is a magical sight and I don’t think it can be beaten. Then there is the night glow, waiting till dark and then watching about 20 tethered balloons lighting up in time to music – stunning. It’s not all about the balloons though, we also have time to head to the bars and enjoy some of the Bristol nightlife, and to see some places of interest in the area, like the SS Great Britain and a boat trip around the harbour. Why not join us this year, and come and see the balloons for yourself?

FOCUS ON THAMES VALLEY & SOLENT In the coming months Thames Valley & Solent will be doing a couple of our iconic ‘behind the scenes events’. The most notable is our Sunset Stonehenge Tour. At Stonehenge we arrive after everyone else goes home and with a maximum of 30 of us we allow our knowledgeable tour guide ‘Don’ to take us through the history and legends of the famous stones. Don brings his dowsing rods to help us understand the importance of the energy lines in the area; handing over the rods so we can check things out for ourselves. Our next Sunset Stonehenge tour is Saturday 5 August. Another behind the scenes tour that Thames Valley will be embarking on is a Sunset tour at Marwell Zoo. When the public has gone home and the animals wake up from their day time sleep, we will visit the zoo and get to see the active animals, again taking with us a knowledgeable guide to answer our questions. This Sunset Tour at Marwell Zoo is scheduled for 8 July.

FOCUS ON YORKSHIRE Yorkshire is a beautiful county and it’s not surprising that it is the backdrop for many films and TV series, including the 2017 film, God’s Own Country. We are lucky enough to have three national parks in our area, The Yorkshire Dales, The North York Moors and a good part of the Peak District, which along with the beaches and clifftops of the North Sea coast gives us a huge and varied playground. Come along and enjoy outdoor adventures from walking and cycling to skydiving, abseiling, coasteering, surfing, or for a more relaxed day, cruising along one of the many canals in a narrowboat. For the less adventurous there are dozens of stately homes and beautiful gardens to explore. For city lovers, we have the vibrant centres of Leeds, Sheffield and historic York to explore, along with Hull - the 2017 UK City of Culture. Many Spice members choose to visit the area on one of our many hostel, bunkbarns or camping weekends and we have welcomed a great many members from all over the country over the years. These fill up quickly but as we go to print we do still have a few places available on our Helmsley weekend (7-9 July), Scarborough for the August Bank Holiday, and looking further ahead, our Winter Warmer Bonfire Weekend at Stainforth in the Yorkshire Dales in November. If you act fast you may be able to join us and enjoy the fun. Welcome to Yorkshire!

FOCUS ON WEST MIDLANDS FOCUS ON SCOTLAND I want to invite you to join us on a Spice weekend in Scotland, whether you live here or are from further afield you’ll always receive a warm welcome as we explore together. One of the many advantages of travelling with Spice is the weekend planning – we do it for you so you can come along and relax and focus on what you came for – enjoyment. In Scotland we are extremely lucky to have some of the most beautiful places on the planet to explore – and we visit as many as we can! This year so far we have enjoyed brilliant breaks on our February Bargain Break in Blairgowrie, Walking in Balmacara, the wonderful Isle of Mull long weekend and the unforgettable Loc Nness. Over the next 12 months and beyond you can experience the fantastic Edinburgh Festivals – live acts, top shows, great food and the stunning Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The Highlands features heavily in our destination list and Grantown on Spey – on the edge of the Cairngorms, and the atmospheric Glencoe are both available to visit this year. 2018 is really exciting, one recommended trip is on the magical Isle of Skye, your chance to visit The Fairie Glens, The Old Man of Stoor, Portree, Uig and so much more. Booking will be available over the coming months so keep an eye out. Ask anyone who has joined us on a Spice Scotland weekend – if they would came back – there’s every possibility they will answer ‘most definitely’.

Crafts, Canals & Curious Places! With such a huge Summer events programme as we have in the West Midlands it is difficult to highlight just a few. However, here are three areas of interest which seem to have really taken off this season: It is a well known fact that Birmingham has more miles of canals than Venice. And when you leave the high Birmingham Plateau, they lead you downhill to all sorts of lovely places throughout our West Midlands region and beyond. Recently we’ve been exploring these historic routes in a variety of ways: As well as our popular Camping Afloat Weekends (next one 8 – 10 September) where we discover the waterways on traditional bunk boats at a bargain price, the canals also feature this Summer in our walking and cycling programme. They are a popular choice because you see the towns, cities and countryside from a different viewpoint – and you know there won’t be any hills! Canal events to look out for include: Birmingham to Warwick Downhill Walking Break (13-14 August); Birmingham to Preston Bagot Towpath Cycling Day (3 September); Urban Ramble: Cannon Hill and Bournville Triangle (5 August 2017); Urban Ramble: Birmingham Waterfront with Sunday Brunch (24 September 2017); Smethwicks’ Amazing Canal History Walk & Tour (6 August 2017) Craft events have also become very popular in our region this year. As well as our famous Blacksmithing (pictured), you’ll find the: Potters Wheel (1 October); Sewing (14 August); Book Folding (5 August); Mosaic Making (10 September) and Bread Making (12 September) to name just a few. Discovering unusual hidden spaces in our region is always a joy. We’re visiting: Europe’s largest Hindu Temple in Tipton (8 July); a Pie Factory Restaurant that’s home to Desperate Dan’s Cow Pie (25 August); an heirs tour of Chillington Hall in a tractor trailer (10 September) and getting inside the BBC (30 September).

Spice Moments

Coordinator’s Corner Welcome to the Yorkshire section of the newsletter which gives you an overview of loads of Spice events coming up in the next three months – as always, full information is on the website. Summer’s here at last and the long and (hopefully) warm days mean we can get out more than ever. We’ve got loads of outdoor sports to try from fun tennis and rounders sessions, to pitch and putt and target archery. Why not try our ringos and water-skiing day or have a go at surfing? We have a narrowboat day, an archaeological dig and outdoor theatre evenings to enjoy too. We also have a new volunteer mountain bike leader Roger who will be leading rides on a couple of Sundays each month – one aimed at beginners and one at an intermediate level, so dust off your bike and join the fun. As an introductory offer, the price will be just £1 for the first four members to book each ride! We’re into the evening ramble season but there are still plenty more to come as I write this – the evening walks are a great social get together at the end of the day – and of course our day rambles continue as always. On the first Saturday of September we have our Spice Yorkshire End of Summer 70s Party in Leeds – an exclusive party for Spice members. We are proud to support St Gemma’s Hospice through this event and all profits will go towards their work. We’ll also be holding a raffle on the night – Please contact us if you would like to donate a raffle prize. I hope as many Spice members as possible will join us for what is sure to be a fabulous night. Our weekend breaks remain as popular as ever and many are already full, but we still have places available on the Helmsley, North Yorkshire Hostel & Camping Weekend and the Scarborough YHA August Bank Holiday Weekend. As someone who loves the 1980s I ‘m really looking forward to the Butlin's 80's Party Weekend too! Finally we now have a new address and phone number so please see the details at the bottom of this page. Hope to see you out and about on an event very soon!

Jonathan Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time we are on an event, come up and say hello so we can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, and give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Indoor car parking is in the St John’s Centre car park on Merrion St., or the Citipark Car Park on Merrion Way is a little further away but cheaper. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q-Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.

For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on Satnav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time unless agreed with the walk leader after consultation with the other walkers.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Join Roy for this 6 mile fun walk. This is a wonderfully entertaining day out. Scarecrows first took over the village of Kettlewell as part of a 'Fun Day' fundraising event for Kettlewell School in 1994. Due to the overwhelming support and enthusiasm of the village there were over 110 scarecrows displayed around the village, in gardens, on roofs, in the churchyard etc. The scarecrow figures were many and varied e.g. chimney sweep, clown, vicar, bride, fisherman, babies, the Simpsons, the Royle Family etc. The first part of the walk is around the ‘Scarecrow Walk’, filling in the trail questionnaire as you go. We meet back at the village hall for the answers and to enter the draw. After a brew we can then extend our walk to the Valley trails to the North before returning to Kettlewell for some après walk refreshment. Today we are guest of Fluid Concept. Fluid Concept Surfboards has been around since 1998. They began as 2 shapers designing & creating boards out of a pure love of surfing, and have evolved the business into what exists today adding the website, then the surf shop and with that came the surf hire & also BSA registered surf lessons. Today we try a Beginner surf lesson. This lesson is aimed at first timers. We'll teach you basic water and beach safety, how to carry and use your surfboard safely, paddling your board and catching a wave, a good warm up routine and of course how to stand on your board (easier said than done). The lessons we offer at the surf school are all 2 hours long but we ask you to arrive about 30 minutes before your lesson starts so you have time to change and pick up your equipment. After the lesson we set aside some time for a chat and feedback or on any surf related subject you like. Here's a brilliant way to tick off an event that is on almost every “bucket list” – yes, the opportunity to pilot an aircraft! We will, of course be under expert instruction throughout. We take off from Coventry with one Spice student in the pilots seat beside the instructor and the other observing from the back seat. We'll meet at the cafe so we are ready for our guided tour which will start at 11:45am prompt. Why not arrive early and enjoy a coffee before we set off for our hour and fifteen minute tour. Afterwards there will be time to visit the gardens before our afternoon tea at 1:30pm on the Castle Estate, meet back at the cafe.

Overnight Forest Experience ... hike in the dark and sleep in a cave!

Go Ape! in Dalby Forest

Sat 9th Sep tember - Sun 10th September Symonds Yat # (GL16 7NN) 7:30pm meet for 8pm start £55 Member, £59 Guest

Anyone with a sense of adventure will love this brilliant multi activity hike after dark. Let’s hope it’s one of those eerie moonlit nights when the deer are out in force and stars that you can reach out and touch - but whatever happens you can be sure it’ll be one of those Spice experiences which you’ll remember for a long time. After meeting Den from outdoor specialists Forest Adventure, we start with a bracing hike, which includes some navigation tuition. Paths may be discarded as we bash through bush intent on a compass bearing despite any obstacles - so we can play at being Special Forces on manoeuvres in the jungle with a little imagination! If our compass work serves us, we should find a cave system at around 1am. Life inside is a little more 'normal' as darkness is permanent in these fascinating places, and we will light a fire inside to lift the spirits. Bear in mind that the temperature is constant underground all year round, and this works to your advantage at this time of year. As we'll be a little tired by now, we'll sleep till dawn in the peace of the cave system. Refreshed and invigorated, we'll plan our final route back. A café breakfast (not included) will be a priority stop for 'refuelling' on our journey home.

You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. We have booked a table at Mozzarellas for 5:30pm for a pizza / pasta. This is a family run, Italian restaurant located in the middle of Marsden.

Spice Holidays Update First of all a very big thank-you to all who completed the Spice Holidays questionnaire in May. We had a fantastic response rate and are now using the feedback to help develop the new range of Spice Holidays due out later this year. More on this in a moment, but first of all I’m delighted to announce the winner of the

questionnaire prize draw: CONGRATULATIONS Debbie Clements of Spice Thames Valley & Solent wins a four-day break in Marrakech at the luxurious Riad Africa in heart of the medina in old Marrakech. Debra has already been contacted and we are in the process of coordinating dates for her visit.

If you weren’t lucky enough to win this fantastic prize, the good news is that a similar five day break using the same riad, plus some time at a kasbah in the Atlas Mountains will be offered through Spice Holidays very soon. If you’d like to know more about Riad Africa please visit www.riadafrica.com. So the holiday questionnaire both reassured us that we are on the right track in terms of creating a dedicated range of Spice Holidays, as well as providing some unexpected insights. There was interest in a very varied range of destinations, some expected, some not. Italy, Croatia, Spain and Russia were among those requested for Europe. There was interest in Africa too, mainly for Morocco, but also for safari holidays in East and Southern Africa. Strong interest in Asia gives us the confidence to offer more long haul trips, and some of these will operate over the winter months. And destinations in North America were very popular among members; as well as Latin America, for example Cuba, Costa Rica and Peru. There was interest in a wide range of types of holiday too with City Breaks, Walking Holidays, Adventure/Discovery, Beach Holidays, Wine/food and Festivals/Events being the most mentioned. All of this will be taken on board. Obviously we have to go one step at a time but we’ve recently contracted the services of Mark Wright, a travel professional who has owned and managed several specialist tour operating businesses over the last 30 years and he is working alongside our existing holidays team to pull together the 2018 programme. “We’ll launch a few of these holidays next month - to Morocco, Tanzania, Croatia and Nepal so please look out for details on the Spice website” says Mark. “More will be announced by September and towards the end of the year, with exciting journeys like the Trans-Siberian Railway likely to be making an appearance and departing in summer 2018”. Highlighted to make Connemara a place close to the hearts of Irish people and visitors alike.

ITALIAN WINE HARVEST & CINQUE TERRE VILLAGES 5 days, Friday 08 September 17 from £650 Departs London Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Edinburgh September is one of the most beautiful times to visit the hills of Oltre Po, just south of Milano over the River Po. Why… because the hills are alive with the smell of grapes! The locals are busy and all the experts are waiting for the right day, the right hour to harvest the grapes at perfection!. Oltrepò Pavese in Lombardy is the hidden jewel of the crown! This experience is about great authentic Italian food, wine, visiting famous and relatively unknown areas nearby and in addition it provides everyone the opportunity to be fully emerged into the wine harvest in one of Italy’s largest wine regions . This experience connects our guests to the hills and the local people through food and wine.

You’ll know you’re in Connemara when you enter an everchanging landscape and scenery and notice how the landscape becomes a mixture of vast beautiful bogland, rivers, lakes, woodlands, rich meadowlands, rugged hills, dramatic craggy mountains and then as you near the coast you’ll stumble across a stunning unpolluted coastline of sandy beaches and blue waters.

LAKE MAGGIORE

6 days, Sunday 08 October 17 from £599 Departs London Stansted or Manchester (Edinburgh available departing 07 Oct) Spice would like to introduce to you Lake Maggiore, Italy’s second largest lake that lies in two countries at once. It is less glitzy than Lake Como, less crowded than Lake Garda and has a mild climate. The tip of the lake is in Switzerland and the bottom is in Italy and the rich Mediterranean vegetation with magnificent majestic mountain gives this area access to stunning valleys and some wonderful exploring possibilities.

It’s not surprising that Italy has just been announced as the healthiest country in the world, of which is a combination of food, the Mediterranean diet , the warm climate and good health care. If you are ready for a experience and want to feel connected to the local land and the people, then please come along.

In the Italian part of the lake one of the main tourist resorts is Arona, one of the major cities and tourist resorts on Lake Maggiore. With about 15,000 habitants, it is the most populous city of the lake too. Arona is also the largest port of the Lake and is also home of the navigation of Lake Maggiore making it an ideal base for our break. There is so much to do not only visiting the towns around the lake by water taxi but also some fabulous walking straight from the hotel..

LA SANTA SPORTS HOLIDAY

8 days, Saturday 16 September 17 from £999 Departs London Gatwick or London Stansted There have been requests from many walkers for WalkWise to return to Ireland and we wanted to do something new and exciting so we have chosen one of the most loved and scenic regions in Ireland: Connemara on the beautiful wild-west Atlantic coast of Ireland. They say when you visit Connemara you “experience the real beauty of Ireland”. It is located in the north west corner of County Galway and is an iconic area of desolate beauty, incredible scenery and interesting attractions, which combine

8 days, Thursday 12 October 17 from £529 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh La Santa is quite simply a brilliant sportsman’s holiday and this will be our 29th year. The complex is completely self-contained and situated on the quiet side of Lanzarote. The wonderful thing about it apart from the hot sun is all the free sports you can learn - it’s endless. This is a self-catering break so no food is included and a feature of the holiday are the informal group nights out in local restaurants.

CYPRUS SPRING CHILLOUT

8 days, Saturday 06 May 18 from £719 Departs London Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham & Manchester Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean, has a rich, turbulent history stretching back to antiquity. Known for its beaches, it has a rugged interior with wine-growing regions. It’s separated into a Greek south and Turkish north, with the capital Nicosia also divided. Coastal Paphos is famed for its archaeological sites relating to the cult of Aphrodite as it is believed to be where the goddess first came to earth and is ‘where the gods go on holiday’. The dividing line between Europe and the Orient, Cyprus has so much to offer and that’s not even mentioning the great weather! The story of Cyprus’ tumultuous past is told through its historic sites, Roman ruins, multifaceted museums and dusty urban streets. This sense of living history is highlighted most vividly in Paphos, with extraordinary archaeological sites like the Tombs of the Kings, which sprawls like an ancient theme park.
