Steps to Become A Lifeguard:

Bronze Star (Optional)

Ages 11+

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Total Training Hours: 8 hours Location: SEAPARC Leisure Complex Su Jan 16-Mar 13 9:30-10:45am $96/8 12336 No class Feb 20

Bronze Medallion (Required) Ages 13+

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Assistant Lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Includes: Lifesaving manual, pocket mask and whistle. Can be 12 years old if successfully completed Bronze Star. Total Training Hours: 20 hours Location: SEAPARC Leisure Complex Su Jan 16-Feb 6 11:30-4:30pm $162/4 12337 M-F Mar 21-Mar 26 12:00-5:00pm $162/5 12338

Bronze Cross (Required) Ages 13+

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as Assistant Lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for National Lifeguard (NL) Must have: Lifesaving manual, pocket mask and whistle. Can be purchased if needed. Total Training Hours: 20 hours Location: SEAPARC Leisure Complex Su Feb 13-Mar 13 11:30-4:30pm $162/4 12339 M-F Mar 28-Apr 1 12:00-4:00pm $162/5 12340 No class Feb 20

National Lifeguard (Required) Ages 15+

The National Lifeguard Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principles and practices, and the decision-making processes which will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. Total Training Hours: 44 hours Location: SEAPARC Leisure Complex TBA Date to be determined

Steps to Become a Water Safety Instructor:

Ages 15+

This is the first step in the Swim Instructor Development Program. Step 1 — Involves three components:  Stroke & water safety screening (3-6 hours)  Online learning (competed at home 14-20 hours)  Teaching Experience: Minimum 8 hours

Step 2 — Includes the following components:  Practical teaching  Classroom & Pool Sessions Location: SEAPARC Leisure Complex TBA Date to be determined

EARN HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS

British Columbia and Yukon high school students can use Lifesaving Society certifications for credit toward high school graduation as follows: • Bronze Cross is worth 2 credits for Grade 11.

• Bronze Cross and Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) are worth 3 credits for Grade 11. • National Lifeguard Pool option (NL) is worth 2 credits for Grade 12.

Nia – Otter Point

Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm & Sundays 10-11am Using movements inspired by three martial arts, three dance arts and three healing arts, Nia is a movement practice that feels like dance. Juan de Fuca Local Area Services Building, 3 – 7450 Butler Road

Thanks to an $892,778 Canada Infrastructure Program –Community, Culture, and Recreation Program grant and $400,000 contribution from Sunriver Estates, the District of Sooke and SEAPARC are getting ready to open Sooke’s newest outdoor recreation amenity, located at 2430 Phillips Road in Sunriver.
