Bronze Medallion REQUIRED

Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education, judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Bronze Cross. Must be able to swim 400m in 12 minutes to pass.

Prerequisites:

Must be 13 years old (by last day of course) or hold Bronze Star (need not be current). Can be 12 years old if successfully completed Bronze Star.

Includes: Lifesaving manual, pocket mask.

Total Training Hours: 20 Hours, classroom and water sessions

Bronze Star OPTIONAL

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion.

Prerequisites:

Recommend candidates can swim a minimum of 100 metres of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke, and are 12 years old (by last day of course).

Total Training Hours: 8 Hours all water sessions

Bronze Cross REQUIRED

Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for National Lifeguard (NL). Must be able to swim 400m in 11 minutes to pass.

Prerequisites:

Must hold a Bronze Medallion (need not be current). Required: Lifesaving manual, pocket mask and whistle. Can be purchased if needed.

Total training Hours: 20 Hours, classroom and water sessions

National Lifeguard

The National Lifeguard Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgement, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principals and practices and decision making processes which will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. Must be able to swim 400m in 10 minutes to pass.

Prerequisites:

15 years old (by last day of course), Bronze Cross (need not be current), Standard First Aid (need not be current), *AMOA is taught within the NL Pool full course.

Includes: Alert Manual and whistle. Must bring pocket mask. Total training Hours: 44 Hours, classroom and water sessions

Earn High School Credits

British Columbia and Yukon High School students can use Lifesaving Society certifications for credit toward high school graduation as follows:

• Bronze Cross is worth 2 credits for Grade 11.

• Bronze Cross and Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) are worth 3 credits for Grade 11.

• National Lifeguard Pool option (NL) is worth 2 credits for Grade 12.
