W

hen is a pool not just a pool?

It's when it embodies the living memory of valour, sacrifice, and service in the face of conflict, a testament to resilience and community passion.

For the Mackay War Memorial Swimming Centre, its significance transcends being a mere recreational facility. It's a symbol fought

for and safeguarded, not just against laps or splashes, but against closure, time and time again, by a devoted community.

Six decades ago, this pool, now a living memorial, emerged through determination and a shared sense of honouring those who served.

Erected through funds raised by raffling a house, its construction was more than bricks and mortar. It was sweat and dedication, built

by the hands of soldiers returning from war, ensuring a legacy to those who never returned.

That effort was remembered and celebrated at a special 60th anniversary party held at the pool last weekend, with returned soldiers, swimmers and the people behind the pool’s survival marking the impressive occasion.

I’m on a quest to uncover your ultimate Christmas traditions—whether they’re quirky, heart-warming, or downright hilarious. Why, you ask? Well, this year’s Christmas isn’t just about me anymore, it’s the first with our son, who will be almost 9 months old.

I’m determined to create traditions that’ll make him giggle, ponder, and possibly spill his milk in astonishment.

Now, speaking of festive shenanigans, I’ve been invited to an Aussie Christmas blowout at a friend's family farm. Since my folks are far, far away, it's all about diving headfirst into the Aussie festivities!

They’ve asked for a classic Kiwi lolly cake, but I couldn’t resist adding a touch of Kiwi flair with a pavlova.

I'm also attempting my first trifle.

Disaster or masterpiece? Only the North Pole elves know!

What’s your festive secret sauce?

Whether it’s an offbeat Christmas Eve ritual involving reindeer socks or a post-Christmas feast sandcastle contest, I’m all ears! Oh, and a burning question: in homes without fireplaces, how does Santa work his magical entry? Is there a secret kangaroo expressway we’re missing?

Traditions are the delightful sprinkles on the holiday cupcake—those quirky rituals that make our hearts merry. Take, for instance, my recent Kiwi holiday home where I tooted my way through the Kaikoura tunnels. Yep, it’s a Kiwi tradition. And just this week, as our home got a fresh concrete slab in the backyard, my little one's footprints and initials now grace our territory. I guess

n the 11th of December, a group of 16 workmates arrived at a restaurant for their Christmas dinner. One of the individuals in the group needed wheelchair access.

Despite multiple confirmations with the venue that this would not be a concern, trouble arose. After multiple attempts to lift the 300kg wheelchair into the restaurant, they were unable to attend their booking and had to form a contingency plan.

Unsure of how their evening would unfold, they contacted Harrup Park Country Club and explained their situation. The reception staff on the phone understood the situation and were elated at the opportunity to help.

The staff at Harrup Park were more than happy to accommodate the group, even though it was a last-minute

booking during a very busy time.

When the group arrived at the country club, they were overjoyed to find bistro staff moving tables and going out of their way to make all necessary accommodations, so that the work colleagues could enjoy their evening, free of concern.

The group have since praised Harrup Park for doing so much to make the Christmas party special and ensure that everyone felt included and had the space to enjoy their night. They have also noted how accessible the building is for those in need of handicapped access, with ramps, toilets and the ability to order food without leaving the table.

Overall, everyone enjoyed their evening, even after the earlier hiccups.

FINANCIAL BARRIERS MACKAY BASE HOSPITAL HELIPAD TO REOPEN BREAKING FOR KIDS’ EDUCATION Parts Of Bluewater Trail To Temporarily Close

T

he Mackay Base Hospital helipad has reopened after a temporary closure to meet new national helicopter landing guidelines.

The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter service conducted a successful test landing last week to trial new security procedures for take-off and landings. CASA guidelines issued in November require a 50metre exclusion zone that is clear of parked vehicles and people during helicopter take-off and landings. The exclusion zone is due to the helicopter downwash from the blades which can cause objects such as prams or bikes to be blown away if they are closer than 50metres to the helicopter.

Mackay HHS Chief Executive Susan Gannon said this meant the section of the Bluewater Trail near the hospital would be closed for short periods of time.

“Mackay HHS has worked closely with RACQ CQ Rescue and Mackay Regional Council to see how we can meet the new CASA requirements and reopen the helipad,” Ms Gannon said.

to support the health service temporarily closing the Bluewater Trail for short periods of time when the helipad is in use.

“Access will be limited during both approach and landing and take-off and departure.

“To minimise disruption to path users, the Bluewater Trail will be reopened when the helicopter is on the ground and the engine has been shut down,” she said.

Ms Gannon asked for community support during the periods when the trail will close. There are an av-

erage of one to two helicopter landings a day.

“People will notice a flashing light on the path, and we ask for cooperation from trail users.

“We will also have security staff at the flashing lights and a temporary barricade, and I ask that people are respectful to them.

“They are there for the safety of our patients and to ensure the helicopter can land. If there are any people within the exclusion zone the helicopter will not land,” she said.

SAVE EUNGELLA Christmas Gift With Wings

esidents of the region are encouraged to sign the ‘Save Eungella’ petition, to halt the proposed construction of a pumped hydro scheme, backed by the Queensland Government.

The petition is a part of Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry’s Save Eungella campaign and aims to preserve the rich biodiversity of Eungella for wildlife and the local community.

According to Ms Landry, the government is hastily pursuing a target of 70 per cent of renewable energy by 2032.

“However, in their urgency for renewable energy, both levels of government are jeopardizing untouched wilderness, valuable agricultural land and mental wellbeing of locals,” Ms Landry explained.

“In their rush to renewables, Labor is investing billions of dollars to build the world’s largest pumped hydro scheme right in the heart of one of Australia’s most

diverse rainforest wilderness areas. It will completely decimate the habitat of iconic native animals, such as the platypus and northern quoll. Once Eungella, land of clouds, is under water, we will never get it back,” she said.

“Queenslanders are rightly concerned about how much these renewable projects are going to be affecting our wonderfully unique environments, particularly projects which will be constructed in one of Australia’s most ecologically diverse areas.

“Not only is this impacting the habitat of native animals, but it is also forcing locals from their homes,” Ms Landry said.

ackay police have charged a 46-year-old woman following a two-year investigation into the suspicious death of a child at Munbura, near Mackay on August 29, 2021.

Emergency crews were called to a Munbura Road address on that date, after a fouryear-old child, Tarrin-Macen O'Sullivan, was reported to have drowned in a backyard pool.

Last Friday, December 8, detectives from the Mackay Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) arrested the mother, 46-year-old Tara Richardson, at a South Mackay address.

Ms Richardson has been charged with one count of murder (domestic violence offence) and one count of misconduct with corpse by interference.

Girls Empowered And Inspired With Project Booyah

ine young girls recently graduated from an action-packed Project Booyah in Mackay. The 16-week community-inclusive police mentoring program offered a unique blend of education, work experience, and adventure-based learning.

to teach them the basics of using the lathe and other tools in the workshop. The final product was a hand-crafted wooden pen that gave the girls a sense of ownership and pride in what they had achieved.

Teaming up with multiple local community groups, the cohort first collaborated with Mad Cow Coffee, who provided their time, resources, and knowledge, to teach our young ladies the skills required to make the perfect coffee over a four-week Barista course.

This not only earned the girls’ certificates for their resumes but also enhanced their communication skills and confidence.

They showcased their coffee-making and customer service skills at Mackay’s Local Farmers Market, receiving positive feedback and some of the ladies have even obtained job interviews from their interactions.

Further expanding their skills, the girls attended the Mackay Woodturners Association for a crash course in woodturning, making hand-crafted wooden pens with guidance from experienced members.

The girls were also exposed to the world of virtual reality by Senior Constable Jaime Brooks, who delivered a Drive to Thrive Road Safety VR session, educating the group on road rules and safety. The girls enthusiastically participated, engaging in the session, and learning the effects of operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicating substance.

To culminate an exceptional semester, Project Booyah Mackay partnered with Whitsunday Water Police to surprise the girls with a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Whitehaven Beach aboard Police Vessel Damian Leeding. The girls expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity, building rapport with police officers and showing genuine interest in their roles.

Program Coordinator Senior Constable Keiran Horsfall was overwhelmed with pride seeing his cohort graduate and is excited to see what the future holds for them.

“The blend of education, work experience, but also knowing when to have fun is intentional. It’s not just about preparing for a job or school; it’s about preparing for life.

“The nine graduating girls have had a lasting effect on me and I’m certain the program will have a lasting effect on them.

“Seeing these young girls graduate with new skills and confidence is the greatest reward.”

BABY ROSIE'S DEBUT AS NATIVITY'S BABY JESUS

he’s only 11 weeks old, but baby Rosie Connell already starred in her first role last Friday at Mater Private Hospital Mackay.

Rosie fulfilled the role of Baby Jesus in Mater’s annual nativity play, which has become a tradition at the facility performed for Mater staff and patients – and starring the children of Mater People.

Rosie’s mother, Mater Private Hospital Mackay Registered Nurse Jasmine Connell, said she was thrilled to have both her children starring in the nativity play for

the first time.

“Even though I’ve worked at Mater Mackay for 12 years, this is the first year that I’ve had the chance for my children to be in the nativity play, which is performed every year,” Ms Connell said.

“Rosie played baby Jesus while my eldest, who is five years old, played one of the angels.

“I’m on maternity leave with Rosie at the moment, but am normally a registered nurse on our surgical ward.

“One of the reasons I enjoy working at Mater is the family environment, which is reflected in the staff and our families being able to come together for the nativity play.

“I also feel the nativity play is a fantastic way to give insight to the true meaning of Christmas and Mater’s own Mission of providing compassionate care to our community.”

Mater Private Hospital Mackay Acting General Manager Chris Junge said he was proud the nativity play tradition was continuing.

he visionary leader of Australia’s largest resource region announced her retirement from local government in Queensland last week.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker broke the emotional news that she has made the decision not to contest the local government elections in March 2024.

Mayor Baker, who is one of Queensland’s most respected local government leaders, is known as a powerhouse community champion for her monumental lobbying and her authentic approach of putting people before politics.

Council CEO Ken Gouldthorp described Mayor Baker as the political architect steering the ship for over a decade and the driving force behind a series of remarkable achievements.

“The Isaac region’s trajectory has been forever altered under her visionary guidance and she leaves a legacy that lays strong foundations for Isaac’s next chapter,” Mr Gouldthorp said.

“As we bid farewell to an Isaac icon, we salute Mayor Baker for her indelible mark on our region's history.

“Her inspirational legacy and authentic human approach to leadership is not just a chapter in our story, but a dynamic force that will resonate for generations to

come.”

Mayor Baker, who has lived in the Bowen Basin for 40 years, shared her heartfelt thanks to her communities, Councillors and Council staff that have supported her throughout her career.

“After nearly 17 years representing the Isaac region, and the last 12 of those as Mayor, I have made the decision to retire from Council,” Mayor Baker said.

“It has been a wild ride and I have put my heart and soul into fighting for Isaac, getting up every day to do my best for the community I love.

“I've cherished every moment of being Mayor, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for our incredible region.”

At the end of a term filled with monumental achievements including saving Glenden, successful lobbying for a new hospital and securing over $120M in funding for our communities, Mayor Baker plans to take a break and spend time with family and friends.

xcitement was palpable in Mackay last week, with the Wiggles performing at the MECC, as part of their national The Wiggles’ Wiggly Big Day Out Tour. During the show, there was a special message, supporting the upcoming free kindy for 2024.

A partnership between the Queensland Government and The Wiggles, the advertising campaign showcased the free kindy initiative, beginning January 1, 2024 for eligible families.

It is estimated that 64,000 children will benefit from this initiative, and have access to quality early education program in the year before Prep, for 15 hours a week, 40 weeks a year.

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert was excited to spread the message in Mackay alongside The Wiggles.

“Free kindy is a huge investment and historic reform from the Queensland Government which will see local Mackay families saving up to $4,600 per year,” she

explained.

“It’s important that Queensland families know kindy will be free, inclusive and accessible from the start of next year, so that every child can get a strong start to their learning.”

“Who better to help us share this fantastic message, than Australian children’s musical icons — The Wiggles?

“It’s terrific to have The Wiggles on board to share this important message and inspire audiences to enrol in free kindy from 2024.”

Cliff Andersen Sports Award recipients, Aiden and Noah Porter

E

very year, the Rotary club of Walkerston is responsible for quite a few local awards.

Recently presented was the Dux Awards at both of the local primary schools.

At Walkerston State School it was presented to Frankie Cunningham, and at St John’s Catholic School to Khloe Noy. Congratulations to both girls!

Also every year, the club presents the Cliff Andersen Memorial Sports Trophy to an outstanding sportsperson.

Cliff Andersen was, for many years, a councillor on the Pioneer Shire Council representing the Walkerston region. He was also a very keen sportsman both playing and coaching tennis.

Following his death, Councillor Andersen’s family donated the Cliff Andersen Memorial Sports Award perpetual trophy to Walkerston Rotary Club. This was to be presented to a local sportsperson who had achieved above average success in his or her chosen sport/s. The trophy was first presented in 1993.

The 2023 Cliff Andersen Memorial Sports Award was rather special this year, by way of being multiplied by two! It was presented to twelve-year-old twins Aiden and Noah Porter, two very high achievers in local athletics, and beyond.

The club's Community Service Award was

presented to Carmel Baretta, a highly accomplished and very well-known local identity, especially in the Italian and Maltese circles. Carmel has worked tirelessly for many years, volunteering in many local community groups, including the Italian and Maltese descendants’ community groups.

International Men’s Day, held on the third Sunday of November, was celebrated with a very successful ‘Sunday Session’. Hopefully the first of such to be organised by the Club.

This came about from a wish expressed by this year’s club president, that he ‘would really like to set up an event focussing on men’s health’. A clever club member suggested the not overly publicised International Men’s Day for the date.

ith wet weather conditions combined with warming temperatures in the Mackay region this means ticks are out in full-force, with RSPCA Queensland warning pet owners of the potential dangers these parasites can pose to pets.

Ticks cause severe illness in our pets and in the worst cases, can lead to death. They may be small, but they are one of the most dangerous parasites affecting domesticated animals.

RSPCA Qld Veterinary Hospital Manager, Emma MacDonald said there were many tick preventative products available which repel or kill ticks, protecting pets from the deadly paralysis tick.

“Keeping up to date with prevention all year round is the best way to protect our pets.

“Remembering ticks can be fatal and knowing the signs to ensure that treatment can be given quickly will also ensure a better chance at survival for our animals.

“Checking your pet daily and thoroughly from nose to tail, running fingertips through coat and checking in ears, between paw pads, under armpits and all over the body.

“If a tick or a crater is found and your pet is showing clinical signs of tick paralysis, take them to your vet immediately.” Emma said.

“These puppies had a large burden of ticks and needed urgent veterinary treatment.

Northern Beaches Vet Hospital commented, “One of the main questions we get asked about ticks is how to identify which are paralysis ticks and which are bush/ brown or cattle ticks.

“If left untreated, ticks are deadly. We frequently see similar cases like this that result in the death of an animal due to paralysis ticks, anaemia from large burdens of ticks, or disease caused from tick bites.”

“The best way to tell them apart is by the legs. The paralysis ticks have legs near the head in a V-shape, whereas the bush/

Mackay's Memorial Pool Celebrates 60 Years Of Legacy

On that historic 14th of December, 1963, the Mackay War Memorial Swimming Centre opened its doors, adorned with a mural capturing the essence of sacrifice and duty. The mosaic, a breathtaking triptych, celebrates the Navy, Army, and Air Force alongside poignant symbols, the Lancaster bomber, battleship, submarine, and the landscapes of New Guinea and Egypt. It stands as a daily tribute to the men and women who selflessly served our nation.

Under the watchful gaze of the sun shining upon a dove of peace and the Southern Cross, the pool was dedicated to the fallen of Mackay and district. The opening ceremony, graced by the Postmaster General and the Mayor, echoed with military tradi-

tions; a prayer of dedication, inspection of a guard of honour, and the poignant call of the Last Post.

This cherished landmark, listed on the Queensland War Memorial Register, has remained a vital hub for both remembrance and everyday life. Schools gather for swimming carnivals, local squads train, aqua aerobics classes thrive, and a spectrum of swimmers from athletes to enthusiasts find solace and joy within its waters.

As the 60th anniversary celebrations unfurled, the Memorial Pool resonated with stories, memories, and a sense of pride.

Members of the Mackay RSL Sub Branch, the Memorial Pool Community Action Group, and the wider community gathered to honour the past and celebrate the

present.

A special appearance was made by Keith Payne VC OAM who spoke passionately about his memories of the Memorial Pool.

Member of the Mackay War Memorial Community Action Group, Carol Single, said, “Our group is so appreciative of the support Keith Payne has given to our group over the past 13 years and the successful Heritage Listing of the Mackay Swim Centre in July, 2020.”

Sue Willett said it was a fantastic event which had been 60-years in the making.

This milestone celebration, coordinated by Millie Volpe and the dedicated team from DMR Leisure, echoed the feeling of pride and perseverance that resonates within every ripple of this cherished pool.

Peter Sheedy echoed the sentiments, reminiscing on the pool's humble origins and the pride it invoked among World War II soldiers.

“I clearly recall the huge effort that went into fundraising for this pool and the pride that returned soldiers from WW2 expressed at the time in honouring those who served in both world wars,” he said.

“That pool hosted numerous events in my high school years and later.”

The Mackay War Memorial Swimming Centre stands, not just as a pool, but as a living, breathing testament to remembrance and community, ensuring that the sacrifices made are never forgotten, and the values they represent endure for generations to come.

MENTORING HELPED BIANCA BUILD A SUCCESSFUL STUD B

efore establishing a stud in Central Queensland, Bianca Collins was a secondary teacher and her husband, John, a boilermaker. They had no experience on the land.

Tired of paying rent in town and in need of adventure, they found their passion for agriculture.

“We fumbled our way into developing a small stud Droughtmaster herd. It didn’t take long for us to add to our acreage by purchasing another 700 acres and leasing a further 1,00 acres—all while working in our full-time careers,” Bianca said.

They soon realised the pressures on farming families can be enormous. To make ends meet, John had to continue working off-farm while Bianca took on the job of keeping the stud herd performing.

“I found it difficult to find a support network in the region or meet up with other likeminded farmers.”

Thanks to the Future Drought Fund’s National Mentoring Program, delivered by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, Bianca was paired with a mentor to help build her resilience and achieve her goals.

“I’m making it my mission to make sure our farm is in better shape for the next generation—for my son and to help my regional community thrive. The only way I can do that is to embrace my desire to learn,” Bianca said.

The program is giving Bianca the confidence to grow a successful stud and connect with other farmers and farming families to share their experiences.

VACCINE STASH STRENGTHENS AUSTRALIA'S DEFENCE AGAINST LUMPY SKIN DISEASE THREAT

A

ustralia has bolstered its bio-security defences with a stash of 300,000 vital vaccines aimed at combating the serious cattle virus that causes lumpy skin disease (LSD), ensuring readiness for potential outbreaks.

LSD, which also affects buffalo, has been reported in Indonesia but Australia remains free of this devastating disease.

However, if the disease got a foothold here, quick access to and effective rollout of these vaccines will help keep Australian cattle and buffalo safe.

For now, the doses of the vaccine will be kept safe in a secure overseas location. They will also be made available for producers in our closest neighbours, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea, if required.

The agreement to secure the vaccination bank is one of many measures we have taken to prepare for a possible outbreak, to

make sure that LSD will not devastate our agriculture industry or impact the livelihoods of farmers.

I

t is the best of times, it is the worst of times in this city as we head into the Christmas period.

With apologies to Charles Dickens, Mackay is a tale of two cities.

The first tale of our city is a great story about home owners and how their investment is experiencing strong growth.

That demand for properties is pushing prices up, not at a crazy speed but creating solid growth. Compared to most of the country, our median price of around the $450,000 mark is much more affordable and adds to the logic of buying here.

After a horrible downturn from 2013 to about 2018, Mackay property prices are solidly and consistently growing. Prices continued to grow this year and the market is reflecting the energetic economy that is keeping everyone busy.

The mining sector is going well and, despite interest rate rises and high inflation, the rest of the economy is also powering along.

The property market has benefitted from a continuing influx of southerners who are moving to our town due to work or lifestyle changes. There are also those families from “over the hill” who are moving to Mackay to have easier access to sports and other facilities their kids need.

The strong economy and terrific lifestyle is keeping people here and that, combined with the additional “migrants”, has created a shortage of rental properties.

This combination of factors is pushing up rental prices and helping create a strong demand in property

Many people are deciding that the difficulty of finding a rental property and the increasing rents mean it makes sense to buy in Mackay.

So, happy days in this little tale. It’s a great time to be doing business in Mackay and there are certainly terrific opportunities for those of us selling real estate.

But there is another tale … the one about the growing number of people with nowhere to live.

You can see these people in the City Heart, down by the river and wherever they can find shelter. It is the downside of what is a positive story for many of us.

I am not sure what the solution is.

We can’t suddenly create new housing for homeless people. And one of the problems for the homeless is trying to navigate their way out of it.

How do you get a place to live when you have no job? How do you find a job when you’ve got nowhere to live?

A vicious cycle that offers little hope.

sides to that economic equation.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want us going back to the days of rental vacancies of nearly 10 per cent.

The people I work for, property owners, benefit from the shortage of supply and high demand. And, as a real estate agent, I benefit from that same dynamic. Like everyone in the business community, by working hard and staying focused, energised and committed, I will get the rewards offered by a vibrant town with a strong, active economy.

So, with Christmas approaching it is a reminder to be thankful for those of us who love this city and enjoy the employment and financial opportunities it presents, the friendships it creates and the lifestyle it offers.

But it’s not like that for everyone and a significant part of the culture of Mackay is that its residents dig in to help those doing it tough.

The guidance needs to come from those at local and state government level who are elected to deal with this stuff. They are not doing a very good job so, with state and local government elections coming up this year, the community needs to apply some pressure, demand some solutions.

This is my last column for the year and I wish both my readers a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Stay safe and I’ll catch you back on these pages in 2024.

’ve had that song stuck in my head for a while now!

But really, Hi, it’s me, your old friend!

I’ve been living under a motherhood rock for the past 12 months, but I’ll be back on air on Star 101.9 bright and early in January.

I actually cannot believe we are already talking about January 2024!

Time is flying by.

I feel there is something about saying ‘time is flying by’ that means you’re getting older.

I would have heard my parents and grandparents say ‘time flies’ so many times over the years, yet it’s only in the last few years (clearly a sign I’m getting old) that I’ve truly understood how accurate that saying is, and how precious every day is.

I hope you were able to be present this year, enjoy the little moments, and spend as much time as possible doing things that make you smile.

But if not, I’m sorry, and good news, is there’s a new year right around the corner, so chuck 2023 in the bin and 2024 provides a clean slate to start fresh.

Next year brings a fresh new sound to the ‘who’ you wake up with every morning, and no I’m not talking about your partner sorry! I mean when you flick on your radio there will be a new show to wake up to! I am looking forward to welcoming my new co-host to town, and you can be sure we have got so much planned to give back to anyone that listens.

My top two favourite parts of the job is to have a chat with everyone every morning and to give away as many prizes and cash as the big boss lets me!

STEM Excellence In Mackay Schools Growing a passion for innovation and mining careers for the next generation

nnovation, resourceful creation, and hands-on education were the theme last month, when the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) delivered two inspiring learning experiences in Mackay, thanks to support from Thiess.

Thiess General Manager Mining – QLD, Chris Bourke said Thiess was committed to investing in the next generation, creating pathways to rewarding careers and delivering sustainable growth in communities like Mackay and the broader Whitsundays.

With the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) on the precipice of reaching its target of 100 school partnerships by the end of 2023, Whitsunday Anglican School and St Patrick’s College Mackay were proud to host QMEA workshops for the first time, which helped Mackay’s next generation mine valuable science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills.

“As a business focussed on technology and innovation, we recognise the importance of helping students build skills that align with emerging careers in the resources sector,” Mr Bourke said.

QRC Director of Skills, Education and Diversity, Ms Katrina-Lee Jones said physics, coding, and mining converged in two unforgettable events that allowed about 30 Year 7 and 8 students to discover the many exciting career pathways in Queensland’s world-class resources and energy sector.

St Patrick’s College Mackay Principal, Mrs Janelle Agius said the school was delighted to host their inaugural QMEA workshop, helping ignite students’ passion for STEM careers whilst further developing indispensable skills like critical thinking, teamwork, and problem solving.

“Students from Whitsunday Anglican College demonstrated their design and engineering prowess as they discovered the impressive forces behind non-compressible fluids,” Ms Jones said.

“The room buzzed with creativity and inspiration as students engineered devices that flipped a coin into a cup without manual intervention, replicating dynamic, cutting-edge technology like coal sorting machines,” Mrs Agius said.

“Working in teams, students created and constructed a model-scale hydraulic arm to perform a specific function that mirrored real-world, mining industry applications. It was a great way for these bright young minds to see how simple physics concepts help the resources and energy sector make challenging tasks a simple feat.

“This program is an excellent opportunity for students to learn firsthand how STEM excellence could lead to local job opportunities at Thiess, or the broader mining industry.”

“Students then delved into reflection and refraction when they positioned a series of mirrors to navigate a laser beam around a fixed obstacle – another clever opportunity to demonstrate the criticality of STEM in everyday mining operations.

“Our new partnership with the QMEA reflects our commitment to nurturing young

talent and empowering them with beneficial skills to embark on prosperous pathways after school.”

As Australia’s largest and most successful industry-led education and schools initiative, the QMEA seeks to broaden student and teacher knowledge of career opportunities in resources.

The academy encourages a talent pipeline of employees into vocational and professional careers, with a focus on female and Indigenous participation. The QMEA currently engages with 99 schools and is a partnership between the QRC and the Queensland Government under its Gateway to Industry Schools program.

N

o matter who you are, or where you’re from, you’ve probably heard “Jingle Bells” at least once.

Some people love to blast carols in the car as early as November, and others can be less enthusiastic. No matter which side of the fence you sit on, Christmas carols are an iconic celebration of the season that fit perfectly alongside the tree that finds itself a staple in the homes of so many.

Christmas carols have deep roots in cultural and religious traditions. The first carol believed to have been written is nearly 1500 years old. While the nature of the music may have changed, for many the importance of the message remains the same.

One of the most prominent carols that can be heard throughout the festive season is “Silent Night”. The history behind this iconic tune is fascinating, although there are several different opinions on how the carol originated.

The song was originally composed in the early 1800s by Austrian composer Franz

Xaver Gruber and the famed lyrics were written by Father Joseph Mohr, a young catholic priest. Silent Night, or as it was then known, “Stille Nacht”, was first performed in a small Austrian parish in Oberndorf on Christmas Eve in 1818. On this fateful night, the young priest brought his writings to Gruber and pleaded with him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for them. This was to be done with haste, as river flooding had damaged the church organ, and an alternative was needed for that evening's mass.

The mass went off without a hitch and a new carol was born. From there the acclaimed tune travelled across the globe and was declared an “intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO in 2011.

The tradition of singing Christmas carols is a multi-faceted celebration of joy, tradition, community, and creativity. These timeless melodies connect us to the past, illuminate the religious significance of the holiday, and foster a sense of togetherness that defines the Christmas spirit.

Filewood Run Spree A Feature As Valley Dominate Mackay Twenty20 Shootout CRICKET

ioneer Valley Cricket Club have staked an early claim for the Mackay Cricket Association Division One Twenty20 Shootout championshi title.

The undefeated Valley X1 launched their series campaign last week with three impressive victories in the 20 overs format and lead the competition on 18 points.

Norths Devils and the Magpies are in second and third spots respectively on 12 points after each registering two wins from three fixtures completed.

Gun all-rounder Cody Filewood is the Valley’s cricketer of the moment – smashing 200 runs from his three appearances with the bat at an impressive average of 100.

knock of 111 in Pioneer’s comprehensive win over Brothers last Saturday at Mirani State High School grounds.

The talented number three faced only 58 balls and cracked five massive sixes and twelve boundaries in a cavalier knock to help the Valley post 1-190.

Filewood shared an unbroken second wicket partnership of 176 with opener Dion Krisanski-Kennedy (61 not out) – then grabbed 3-23 with his off-spin bowling to help restrict Brothers to 8-137.

In the Valley’s opening round win over Walkerston, the dashing Filewood hammered 69 and also hit a quick 20 runs in his team’s resounding victory over Souths.

Another highlight was a superb century from Walkerston’s legendary representative batsman Jakob Frerichs in a gripping loss to Norths at Roy Trevaskis Oval.

The left-handed opener and team vice-captain clouted an unbeaten 122 off only 59 balls to help Walkerston register 6-197 with support from Luke Jackson (21).

Frerichs smashed an incredible eleven sixes and ten boundaries during his epic knock – but to no avail as the Devils (5198) reached the target with five balls to spare.

Norths were best served by Lane Kohler who cracked a power-laden 84 off 39 balls with seven boundaries and seven sixes, Darryn Dyer (46), Jason Butterworth (25), Chris Day (19 not out), Kai Higham (2-29) and Mason Kohler (2-39).

Mason peeled off an unbeaten 49 to guide the Devils (2-98) to a first round triumph over Souths (97) with Jarryd Kallio (4-20) and Lane Kohler (3-18) the chief destroyers with the ball.

ackay Surf Lifesaving Club recently travelled to Alva Beach, Ayr to compete in the North Barrier Branch Champion Lifesaver Carnival. The event involves lifesavers being assessed on their surf sports fitness, patient assessment and CPR skills, as well as a detailed theory paper.

Mackay SLSC Director of Surf Sports, Josh Grant said, “This competition is extremely important in developing the skills of our lifesavers.

“These are the people who patrol our beaches and are there for the community to make going to the beach safe and enjoyable.

“It is a very challenging multi-disciplined event that tests competitors in a number of different scenarios that could one day save someone’s life,” he added.

“The surf club’s lifesavers had some outstanding individual results with Under 15’s Nate McKinnon and Zara Richardson taking out first, Under 14’s Meliana Craig taking out second and in the Under 13’s Cadence McKinnon finished first with Isabella Grant missing out on second by half a point to finish third,” said Mr Grant.

“The club is extremely proud to see our lifesavers excel at such an important event. This was all thanks to the coaching of Cathy McKinnon who will now lead the team heading into state and national titles for this important lifesaving competition.”

Pitbulls Barking Up A Treat In Mackay Junior Cricket CRICKET

roserpine Cricket Club have extended their winning streak in the 202324 Mackay Junior Cricket Association Under 15 Mixed Division A competition.

The all-conquering Pitbulls had too many big guns for the combined Pioneer Valley/ Norths X1 at Abbott Park – chalking up a ninth consecutive victory to push their claims for the title.

Promising all-rounder Joshua Geisler top scored with 40 as Proserpine posted 6-174 off their 25 overs with support from Malaki Gabey (32 not out), Lachlan Riley (20), Ky Porter (18) and Matthew Logan (16 not out).

Geisler, who faced 31 balls and cracked five boundaries, joined forces with Gabey to add 73 runs for the sixth wicket after the undefeated leaders were struggling at 5-79 at one stage.

Kai McLoughlin (2-1 off three overs), Gabey (2-10 off three), Jordan Lawn (1-2), Riley (1-6) and Max Pomeroy (1-9) shared

the bowling spoils after restricting Pioneer Valley/Norths to 9-108.

The second placed Magpies registered their fifth win of the season after toppling Brothers at Roy Trevaskis Oval.

Rising prospect Ishan Rana carved out a stylish 38 not out as the Magpies recorded 4-150 – slamming four boundaries and two sixes during his 28-ball knock.

Other batsmen to impress were Rohan Cherian (41 off 44 balls with eight boundaries) and Brayden Manttan (25), who shared an opening stand of 64 before they were both stumped off the bowling of Brothers’ talented spinner Finn Randell (2-16 off five overs).

Cooper Boyce hit 16 and Brodie Garnham (14 not out).

In reply, Brothers could only muster 6-112 with top contributions from Callum Strydom (25), Lachlan Ipson (24) and Llandyn Dargin (14 not out).
