CONSCRIPT AND CONFLICT

THE BRUTAL TOLL OF VIETNAM’S BATTLEFIELD

“Some of us were only 20,” Kenneth (Ken) Higgins OAM recalls, his voice heavy with the weight of memory.

“In those days, you couldn’t vote until you were 21 and you couldn’t drink.

“We were sent to a foreign land we hadn’t even heard of before as kids, to kill people we didn’t know or dislike.

“They expected us to go and do these horrors and then come back and forget about it.”

This is part of the turmoil many Vietnam Veterans have had to face throughout the years, many with undiagnosed PTSD battling recurrent nightmares, many with unexplained illnesses through harsh poisonous chemical exposure and many who still to this day are reluctant to talk about the horror of conflict as a conscript.

The sad irony of the Vietnam War, is that although it was the first war to be televised, it’s the war with the most reluctance for its returned soldiers to talk about, due to the harsh labels pinned on these kids when they returned, “baby killers”, “murderers” were yelled at them when they first stepped foot back on ‘home’ soil.

There was no welcome home parade for these men and women.

And then, after the constant anxiety of staying

“Yet they would send us to Vietnam to kill people.”

alive for months on end in a jungle with constant attacks and explosions, these brave souls were basically forgotten, left to get on with a life they barely recognised, with little to no support.

This is the story Ken Higgins OAM has agreed to share, not to glorify war, but to acknowledge the sacrifice of those still living with inner turmoil, pay respect to those fallen and ensure the mistakes and sacrifices of the past aren’t white-washed and forgotten.

Forgetting the horrors of war proved impossible for Ken and his fellow conscripts.

“Nearly half of the Australians killed in Vietnam were conscripted soldiers, yet the Australian Government said conscripts were mainly to be utilised to make up the numbers... Yet the reality was that conscripts saw as much action as the full-time soldiers.

“In our platoon at least half of us were conscripts.”

The conflict which forever changed Mr Higgins’ life occurred on December 11, 1969. For the soldiers in Vietnam, it was a very different

‘Summer of ‘69’ than the one sung by Bryan Adams.

Amidst the dense jungle of Vietnam, fate dealt a cruel hand to a band of brothers.

“War correspondents were a relatively rare sight for us... until that day,” Ken recounts with the rawness of memory. It was a day etched in blood and sorrow, a day when Lance Corporal Robert Buchan, known affectionately as Jock, met his untimely end.

Jock led his platoon through the treacherous terrain of the Nui May Tau Mountains. With every step, they made their way through the thick jungle canopy and traversed the thin line between life and death.

As they pressed forward, Private Kenneth Higgins, a forward scout, signalled the presence of an enemy bunker just 15 meters ahead. Jock, ever vigilant, halted the platoon’s advance, sending a second scout to investigate. But fate, cruel and unyielding, intervened with ruthless efficiency.

The enemy, hidden amidst the canopy, advanced upon the unsuspecting soldiers. In the chaos that ensued, Jock was struck down by a hail of bullets to the chest, his young life extinguished in an instant. Nearby, Private Kenneth Higgins was wounded, his arm and leg torn by the onslaught.

Above the canopy, the rhythmic thud of helicopter blades signalled the arrival of salvation. An American medivac team descended upon the sight of contact, their mission clear: to rescue the wounded and retrieve the fallen.

The aftermath was captured by the war correspondent who was with them that day.

“It’s the only photo of an Australian soldier killed in action taken by a war correspondent in the Vietnam War,” Ken reflected.

The photos capture the aftermath of the contact with L/Cpl Buchan’s body in view while an American ‘dust-off’ helicopter (Iroquois) hovered overhead to winch the injured Pte Higgins to safety as well as retrieve the body of the deceased.

“They winched me out of the jungle first as Jock was already dead and if they ran into strife they would have left him and returned later, but they

were able to get Jock’s body out. There were no body bags or anything, they just had to tie him on and lift him out.”

The memory of that incursion still haunts Mr Higgins to this day, though his valiant stature rarely shows glimpses of the effect these and other moments in Vietnam left scarred on his soul.

“It was a horrible time but interwoven with the best of times which is hard to comprehend.

“But when faced with the horrors we were, you relied on the person beside you with your life, and that forms bonds which are still strong to this day, more than 50 years later.

“We knew we just had to hold on long enough to get out of there.

“It’s probably scarred us a lot more than we realise in the way we think. My wife recognises it in me, she says when bad things happen I show no emotion. But when you’ve seen the worst, whatever they dish up now is no worse than what we’ve been through.”

Mr Higgins said that a lot of the Vietnam Vets are dying very young, some through suicide and some through illness.

“I’m not saying we’re young now but we shouldn’t die yet, and a lot are dying sooner than they

should.

“We’ve had people die in their 40’s and 50’s from a lot of cancer.

“We’re suspicious of the defoliants used during Vietnam and it leaching into the water and all sorts of stuff that stuck to us, all the poisonous agents.”

More than 20 years after returning home, Ken spent three weeks in Greenslopes hospital with a rash from one end of his body to the other.

“They had me in oil baths daily, wrapped me up like a mummy, I had to sleep in wet gear and they never told me what it was.

“We had a reunion back in the nineties, and out of the eight of us that slept in the same room, six of us had rashes.

“We’re seeing a lot of child deformities coming through, out of all of my mates nearly all of us have a child with something not quite right and not just the children but the grandchildren.

“But the Government won’t admit to any of that, we’re just told to ‘get over it’.

10 YEARS OF SIZZLING

With MBW On The Barbie

What began as a service to the community and a desire to ensure a local shopping centre still had a butcher shop, has become a labour of love for a humble team of passionate staff members who have transformed a closing Butchery into a thriving business over the past 10 years.

One of the longest running businesses at Whitsunday Shopping Centre, MBW On The Barbie, is the brainchild of entrepreneurial meat-specialists, Karen Rix and Don Cameron. Ten years ago, when the couple heard the lease was not to be renewed by the existing tenant butcher and decided to step-in to ensure the continuation of this valuable service.

“We thought – every shopping centre deserves a local butcher!” expressed Karen.

“And the community welcomed us with open arms, everyone was excited to see that we’d continue at the convenient location, and we have had fantastic support ever since.”

Led by the demand for growth, Karen and Don were humbled by the support which encouraged them to expand from the Master Butchers Whitsundays store, which had been operating on Stewart Drive in Cannonvale for five years at the time, to the new premise at Whitsunday Shopping Centre. Determined to differentiate the new store from its big brother, the pair decided to specialise in quality barbeque products while also offering the same meat staples available at the other location.

Inspired by the outdoors lifestyle of the Whitsundays, the ‘On The Barbie’ branding was an instant success, with customers loving the

delicious range of barbeque meats and helpful advice from the knowledgeable staff.

“We trained all the staff on adapting oven cooking times to suit hooded barbeques and found that people loved being able to cook their favourite meals outside, they simply needed to know how to do it!”

With a pre-existing reputation for quality meat products from the Stewart Drive Store, replicated seamlessly at On The Barbie, the new store quickly gained popularity and its convenient location made it popular, especially with locals living within walking distance.

Graduating from little sister to team-mate and business equal, MBW On The Barbie has risen in the ranks, rising to become a significant gameplayer in the local retail sector. This status was | www.corelife.com.au

SIZZLING SAUSAGES

reinforced when MBW On The Barbie entered into the Australian Meat Industry Council Awards and came home with a gold award for the Best Sausage in QLD for their classic beef sausage.

Proud to be supplying delicious, high-quality meat for the Whitsunday community, MBW On The Barbie constantly innovates to ensure customers have the best flavours whether they are cooking up a storm in the kitchen or sizzling steaks outdoors on the barbie.

One of the ways they keep ahead of the pack is by offering a range of complementary products such as their marinades and rubs. These tasty additions ensure that nobody gets tired of the same old tastes, in fact they can keep trying different combinations.

In addition, Master Butchers has taken this one step further by opening a ‘Chef’s Kitchen’ at their Stewart Drive location. This new innovation supplies MBW On The Barbie with delicious accompaniments to complete the barbeque experience. Crunchy salads made with the freshest local products are put together by a talented chef who loves pairing the best recipes with the most succulent meats.

For those looking for a breakfast barbeque, MBW On The Barbie also supply their own bacon and local eggs.

Standing strong through the tests of times, MBW On The Barbie has weathered several storms including the shopping centre fire of 2016 and Cyclone Debbie in 2017. On both occasions, their priority was serving the local community and helping those that needed it

most. It is this community spirit that has seen them become the highly-embraced, much-loved local business it is today.

As MBW On The Barbie celebrates its 10 year milestone, Karen hopes other local businesses will feel inspired by their resilience and witness first-hand how a small business can succeed in supplying quality produce to the local community.

Meet Nicky

BW On The Barbie has been serving up topquality cuts and mouthwatering meals for a decade now, and at the heart of it all is Nicky, who has been with the business since day one.

Originally working in supermarkets and a bakery, Nicky felt the need for a change. Knowing the owners before joining, she saw an opportunity

Meet Tracie

Sales Assistant With MBW On The Barbie

Tracie’s career switch came in the most unexpected way— quite literally with opportunity knocking.

After leaving her role at a discount retailer, it didn’t take long for her to find herself back in the workforce, thanks to a serendipitous visit from Karen, one of the owners of all four MBW businesses.

On her first day of unemployment, Karen appeared on Tracie’s doorstep, offering her a job on the spot. It was an opportunity that took Tracie by surprise but it felt like a perfect fit.

Beyond the skills, it’s the camaraderie that Tracie enjoys most.

“They laugh at all my dad jokes,” she said with a grin.

One of her go-to jokes is, “What do pirates say on their 80th birthday?

AYE Mmm-atey!”

Her love for creating relationships with people in the community kept her passionate about customer service, so the transition to MBW On The Barbie allowed her to continue doing what she loves while picking up a few new skills.

“I’m learning how to make different delicacies,” Tracie shared.

“I’d never made a chicken Kiev before working here.”

The hands-on training has been a highlight for her, especially with Nicky by her side.

“Nicky shows me how to improve. She’s an awesome trainer,” said Tracie.

Originally from Bondi, Tracie came to the Whitsundays nearly 30 years ago after falling in love with the area while on holiday.

“It reminded me of Bondi when they looked after their locals,” Tracie said with a laugh.

“They don’t look after locals anymore in Bondi, it’s all yuppie now.”

But in the Whitsundays, Tracie found a place that still holds onto that tightknit community feel.

“The community here is awesome; everyone steps up to help each other. It’s brilliant,” she said.

Nicky spends most of her time behind the front counter, but her role stretches beyond customer service.

“I do pretty much everything except cut meat,” Nicky shared.

“I make all the products, I serve

on the counter, and I also slice ham and bacon.”

Having been with MBW On The Barbie from the beginning, Nicky has had a front-row seat to the company’s growth. She’s seen it expand from one bustling store to four, saying it’s great to see the business thriving across the region.

Meet Lockie

Apprentice Butcher With MBW On The Barbie

From a young age, Lockie knew his calling.

Following in the footsteps of his uncle, he set his sights on becoming a butcher. Now, at just two-and-a-half years into his apprenticeship with MBW On The Barbie, Lockie is proving that his passion runs as deep as his skillset. Lockie’s natural talent and keen interest in the craft have allowed him to thrive in his apprenticeship.

He’s particularly proud of the progress he’s made, saying that his training at MBW On The Barbie pushed him ahead of schedule, picking up second-year skills during his first year on the job.

For Lockie, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as breaking down an animal and preparing it into different cuts that leave customers excited to take home a perfectly prepped steak or roast.

“The best part is seeing their faces when they get a good steak,” he shared.

His favourite task? Making sausages. While it might seem simple to the untrained eye, the art of crafting the perfect snag

requires precision, speed, and a lot of practice.

“I’m getting pretty quick with them now,” Lockie said with a smile.

“I like making the thick ones, those take a bit more focus. They’re easy to overfill, and if you add just a bit too much pressure, they can burst, and they are a pain to clean when they explode all over the wall.”

Whether it’s mastering the art of sausage-making or breaking down a cut to perfection, he’s a butcher who takes pride in every step of the process.

Outside the shop, Lockie unwinds with his mates, spending his weekends fishing, pigging, or simply chilling out.

on another passion—renovating her home.

“They call me Bobette the Builder,” Nicky laughed.

“I renovate my home and build stuff at home. I’m a bit of an artyfarty type person.

“I have plants and enjoy making the house look nice.”

Her home, complete with a pool and a cozy spot for beers, is her

haven. It’s where she spends time with her “crazy black Great Dane” named Jonesy, whom she affectionately refers to as her child now that her four children are grown and spreading their wings on their own adventures.

Meet Waylon

Co-Manager And Butcher At MBW On The Barbie

After eight years at Master Butchers Whitsunday and MBW On The Barbie, Waylon has certainly found his groove, carving out not just meat but also a satisfying career and lifestyle.

When he made the switch from a large supermarket’s meat department, he was ready for a real challenge, and Master Butchers Whitsunday delivered—helping him improve his skills as a third-year apprentice and eventually complete his trade in 2017.

“They taught me how to properly bone beef, pigs, lambs, and process bacon, hams—all that stuff. There’s a big difference in what you learn here,” said Waylon.

His passion for the craft goes beyond the basics. For Waylon, there’s something rewarding about preparing a whole animal into chops, roasts, or steaks.

“It’s really satisfying when someone wants a specific size roast or steak, and I cut it bang on.”

While the satisfaction of mastering his trade is a big part of the job,

Waylon finds just as much joy in the interactions he has with his customers.

“I love this small community, it’s nice and quiet, which makes it a great place to raise a family,” Waylon said.

“Plus, it’s the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Where else would you want to live?”

But Waylon’s talents don’t stop at butchering. Since picking up the alto saxophone in grade five, music has been a major part of his life. Today, he plays in two local bands—the Whitsunday Big Band and Proserpine Citizens Band— where he gets to experiment with different genres and just enjoy making music.

When he’s not behind the butcher’s block or playing his sax, you’ll likely find Waylon camping with his wife and two-year-old daughter, soaking up the serenity of the Whitsundays.

Having been in their current store at the Whitsunday Shopping Centre for 10 years, owners Ken and Myrna, started out selling in markets and are proud of their shop, which they opened back in 2014. They love their location as people often stop by to check out their unique selection of items before heading to Coles.

Asian Products on the Go sells food, beauty, cooking utensils, woks and chopsticks. However, one product that stands out from the rest is their fermented bean paste called NATTO which gets snapped-up quickly…very good for digestive health.

In addition to offering a fantastic selection of Asian products, the store also provides money transfer services for those looking to send funds abroad, distinguishing them from other stores in the area.

According to Myrna, when people

head into the store, they normally pick up the delicious “noodles and rice”, thanks to the store’s wide selection of brands that aren’t typically found in larger supermarkets. Another store favourite is the renowned MSG, which delivers irresistible flavour to any dish, reminiscent of takeaways or restaurant dishes.

REEF BEATS OPENS ITS MUSICAL DOORS! WELCOME TO FAY’S GARDEN

Uniting their passion for property and gardening, Whitsundays Property Services has expanded, opening a new store at the Whitsunday Shopping Centre that caters to the region’s plant lovers.

The idea began when owners of Whitsunday Property Services, Rhys and Karly realised they had too many plants at home and wanted to share them with fellow enthusiasts. This planted the seed of an idea to launch a side-business and Fay’s Garden grew into the flourishing wonderland of greenery customers enjoy today.

Fay’s Garden is an indoor plant store, named after Rhys’s grandmother, Fay, who inspired Rhys and created the love he has for plants today.

Fay’s Garden differs from other plant shops as they offer a unique level of service to all their customers.

“I think what makes us different is that everything is already done for you,” said Karly.

“We mix the soil to suit the plant, we offer repotting after 12 months, and have 1 on 1 contact with customers after they leave.”

Karly and Rhys maintain contact with you once you have left the shop, they email a plant specific care sheet to customers which includes all types of information, such as fertiliser information, ideal temperature information, pet safety, light and positioning information and watering needs.

Expanding on the store’s distinctive charm, each plant has been given a name. The couple say this has been proven to make people more likely to look after them properly. Karly and Rhys say the named plants have a calling to some people, with some customers letting the name choose their next plant.

Indoor plants don’t just look cute and provide a home with bright colours, they are also effective at clearing the air. They draw in carbon dioxide and other pollutants and break them down. Having them in an indoor space can also reduce stress, increase productivity and boost moods.

Recently opened Reef Beats is set to make its musical mark in Airlie Beach. Bringing a unique vibe to the Whitsunday Shopping Centre, owner Steve Payne says he is excited to be back.

After leaving Perth in 2001, Steve moved to Airlie Beach and set up a record shop, after stumbling across the place on a tour up the east coast of Australia back when he was a youngster. Steve retold his time in Airlie Beach over 16 years and emphasised how the town was “Rockin’ 24/7.” Due to Cyclone Debbie, however, Steve was devastatingly forced to shut his beloved record store and decided to head to South Australia.

Steve returned to Airlie Beach in July this year and with him came the idea for Reef Beats, a record store with a huge range of over 5000 vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, T-shirts, guitars, drums accessories, strings and collectables. At his opening, Steve emphasised that it was great to see all his old friends, and the word had got around that he was back in town.

Reef Beats has a deep catalogue of mainly retro items, although he added that he does not neglect the newer

music like Taylor Swift when stocking his store. His best sellers are oldschool vinyl’s which make around 40% of the turnover. You can also get your hands on some custom orders at Reef Beats, and Steve is always open to hear any requests you may have.

Steve mentioned that his time at Whitsunday Plaza has been fantastic, especially in terms of relaxation. He values the area’s great vibe and praised the excellent management. He also highlighted the beautiful location and appreciated the added benefit of easy parking.

Steve encourages all to come in and take a look at his diverse range of stock and enjoy the vibe of a retro music store whilst being greeted with a smile. He ensures that you will “walk out with a smile and feeling great.”

Back in the day, Steve would compete with bigger stores who were stocking vinyls, now he is a unique force in the Whitsundays, but has maintained the same charm.

CRAFT YOUR HEART OUT!

Boomerang Bags and Craft Shop is a beloved community hub dedicated to uniting people through creativity. The shop offers a wide array of craft supplies and is adorned with charming homemade creations, from handcrafted seat covers to delightful crochet turtles. Each corner of the store reflects the spirit of local artisans, making it a vibrant space where creativity and community come together.

Founder Tina Everett, decided to start up the group after sadly losing her mum. The group started as an outlet for Tina to go out and meet new members of the community after feeling lonesome in the transient town of Airlie Beach. What started as a small group, soon transpired into a shop after the Whitsunday Shopping centre kindly offered one of their spaces to Tina for no rent.

Tina explained how the shop has been amazing for her:

“I’ve come out of my shell, and I’ve made a whole lot of great friends.”

According to Tina, people can often find coming to the shop intimidating to start with but end up loving the experience as “craft gives people their own little bubble.”

The shop is open Thursdays and Fridays for adult craft groups and Tina encourages anyone who loves craft to

come along. Most of the craft supplies in the shop are community donations and anything that can’t be used in the shop gets donated to schools, daycare centres and nursing homes.

“Bring your craft, if you haven’t got craft supplies, we have many supplies here.”

“It’s just gold coin donation which helps pay for tea, coffee and biscuits.”

Alongside her adult craft days, Tina also provides help to the boomerang bags initiative, which creates reusable fabric bags out of donated materials. The ladies at the Women’s prison in Townsville are provided with the fabric which they turn into bags for Tina to share around the community. This is a great program providing these ladies with so much more than just sewing skills.

If you are a keen crafter looking to make new friends, head into Boomerang Bags and Craft Shop Thursday or Friday at 9am-2pm.

RESILIENT ECOSYSTEMS, ENGAGED COMMUNITY

Over two decades ago, a small group of passionate individuals laid the foundation for what would become a driving force in Natural Resource Management (NRM) across the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac Region. Guided by a clear set of values, they cultivated a vision for nurturing the environment, supporting biodiversity, bolstering the economy and engaging regional communities and visitors.

Through building intimate knowledge of the region and fostering strong community connections, they worked on practical strategies and solutions to create lasting environmental impact. Today, Reef Catchments continues to thrive stronger than ever, helping to shape the future of our region.

LAYING NRM FOUNDATIONS

In the early 2000’s, both Federal and State Governments made a commitment to regionalise NRM and introduced 56 regional NRM organisations throughout Australia covering land, estuarine and coastal areas. This included the establishment of the Mackay Whitsunday Natural Resource Management Group (MWNRMG) in 2003, which would later be renamed Reef Catchments. MWNRMG comprised a small team who engaged

in a consultative process with other community stakeholders, including existing regional catchment and Landcare groups amongst others, to develop the first Mackay Whitsunday Natural Resource Management Plan. In short, the plan provided a collaborative assessment of the regional landscape and a detailed prioritisation of work actions needed to enhance or rehabilitate the landscape.

The Mackay Whitsunday Regional Water Quality Improvement Plan followed between 2006 and 2008. This was the first time funding had been received to create a regional water quality assessment, modelling and measuring program. Information from the program helped provide a foundation for the investment, programs and plans that were to follow.

2015 saw the launch of a new NRM plan and the Mackay Whitsunday Fish Barrier Prioritisation Report, published by Catchment Solutions.

In 2016, a Climate Sustainability Plan was developed and was the only complete plan of its kind in the QLD NRM regions at the time. Also unique to the Mackay NRM region was the creation of several Local Coastal Plans, developed in collaboration with Mackay Regional Council.

Strategic plans such as these have been the cornerstone for ongoing activity at Reef Catchments. They have provided clear guidance, established accountability, and enabled measurable outcomes for both the organisation and the partners they work with.

ROLLING UP THEIR SLEEVES

From the very first NRM Plan, the MWNRMG got to work sourcing investment for projects to deliver on the recommendations of the NRM Plan. Over the years, programs delivered included Caring for our Country Phase 1 and 2 which included the Reef Rescue Program, the innovative Project Catalyst, and the Reef Programme. In addition, the National Landcare Program was rolled out between 2014 and 2018.

These early programs allowed the Reef Catchments team to develop an intimate knowledge of the region, strong stakeholder relationships and gain crucial on-ground experience. Each plan and project laid the ground for the next, leading to the implementation of a host of programs over the years covering streambank remediation and maintenance, sustainable agriculture, reef resilience and biodiversity projects.

RESILIENT ECOSYSTEMS, ENGAGED COMMUNITY

TRANSFORMING NRM IN A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

In 2010 the organisation transitioned to become Reef Catchments Limited and solidified its commitment to sustainable natural resource management and accountability in the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac region.

In late 2012, Reef Catchments formed a wholly owned subsidiary, Catchments Solutions (originally named Reef Catchments Solutions) creating opportunities to work on projects not open to grants or in the geographic region.

The implementation of significant programs such as Reef Rescue saw rapid organisational growth necessitating the establishment of new premises, including a Proserpine-based office, opened in 2013.

FOSTERING CONNECTIONS: IMPACTFUL EVENTS AND ENGAGEMENT

Community engagement has always been at the heart of Reef Catchments’ values, reflecting a commitment to fostering a connected, skilled and proactive community. Signature events such as the Grazing Forum and the Soil Symposium have drawn large audiences for over a decade and have helped to build networks of informed and engaged stakeholders. Reef Catchments run a wide range of

events yearly, from water quality science forums to land and feral animal management, drone training and a host of other practical workshops.

Beyond forums and workshops, community programs such as Coastcare and the current School Waste Minimalisation Program, have engaged school-age children and families in environmental stewardship. Regular community activities like beach clean-ups and tree plantings further solidify Reef Catchments role in promoting environmental conservation and encouraging community participation. These initiatives not only enhance public awareness but also drive collective action toward a sustainable future.

TODAY AND TOMORROW

Over two decades, the evolution of Reef Catchments has been a testament to dedication and strategic foresight. From humble beginnings to its current role as a driving force in environmental stewardship, the organisation has continually adapted to meet the needs of a dynamic region, transforming challenges into opportunities.

Looking ahead, Reef Catchments remains dedicated to leveraging its rich history, deep regional knowledge and innovative thinking to drive positive change. As part of the wider NRM Regions QLD (NRMRQ), Reef Catchments contributes to the establishment and presentation of a coordinated agenda of NRM priorities to both State and Federal Governments.

At 21 years young, Reef Catchments is primed and well-positioned to navigate future challenges with a focus on ensuring a thriving, resilient environment for generations to come.

“Our strength lies in our people and our ability to observe, listen, and collaborate. We’re all-in, because we believe in the collective power of working together to improve the natural resources that support both our community and our economy”

community-driven document, guided, endorsed, and owned by the residents of Mackay, Whitsunday, and Isaac. The development of the plan involved substantial contributions and consensus from various stakeholders including landholders, Traditional Owners, industry representatives, community groups and governmental bodies. Reef Catchments collaborated closely with the community to craft this plan, aiming to forge a cohesive and forward-looking strategy for managing the region’s natural resources.

is connected to a network of 56 NRM bodies across Australia. This network, which includes 12 independent organisations in Queensland, addresses a wide range of environmental challenges from the Great Barrier Reef to rainforests and rangelands. They work collaboratively on issues such as land management, biodiversity conservation, water quality, catchment repair, sustainable farming, and climate

These collective efforts are aimed at maintaining resilience and adaptability to change, and aligning human activity with environmental conservation across regional Queensland. Through securing investments and building strong community relationships, NRM Regions QLD aspires to create landscapes that are both resilient and beneficial to local communities. This strategic commitment ensures that the natural beauty and productivity of the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac region are preserved, supporting both current residents and future generations in living in harmony with their environment.

plans, Reef Catchments has played a key role in building essential knowledge of regional and community environmental needs. Their ongoing work has been key to identifying issues such as poor water quality affecting the Great Barrier Reef, loss of natural habitats due to city and industrial growth, and invasive species harming local wildlife along with the effects of climate change. These challenges require integrated management approaches to ensure sustainable use and conservation of natural resources.

By managing these challenges through integrated approaches, Reef Catchments strives to support sustainable development and conservation, protecting the region’s diverse ecosystems and supporting its communities. With 21 years of regional knowledge and expertise, their continued commitment underscores the importance of their role in maintaining the area’s environmental health and economic vitality.

Clairview

The Biodiversity team at Reef Catchments engages in various initiatives to safeguard the biodiversity of the Mackay Whitsunday Region. Their efforts concentrate on wetlands and priority species conservation.

KOALAS

The first Reef Catchments Koala Habitat Restoration project kicked off early in 2024.

After many years working towards building recognition of the regional koala population and its needs, this project represented a significant step forward for Reef Catchments.

With a primary objective to stabilise or improve koala populations, the initiative includes managing 150 hectares for weed control to facilitate koala movement and lower fire risks, alongside planting 27 hectares with koala-friendly vegetation. The project spans from Sandy Creek to just north of Koumala, covering from Connors Range in the west to the eastern coastal areas, targeting several key zones within this range.

Regional landholders and communities have enthusiastically engaged with the project to assist with identification of koala habitat areas, weed management and habitat revegetation.

The program will provide valuable data and insights to support future regional programs in support of these endangered populations.

EASTERN CURLEW

Listed as a top 20 priority and critically endangered bird, the Eastern Curlew uses the Mackay region as a non-breeding roosting destination.

Flying more than 20,000 kilometres (round trip) from breeding grounds in China and Russia to Australia, they can lose 40-70% of their body weight. This significant loss makes it crucial for them to rebuild body muscle and fat during their stopovers in the region.

The Eastern Curlew programs, delivered by Reef Catchments, utilise habitat data to identify and prioritise sites for conservation interventions. These interventions include feral animal control, beach cleanup events, and habitat restoration. Community engagement, awareness, and education are also important in providing safe and quiet areas for birds to rest and feed.

These groundbreaking regional programs have been an important start to understanding and helping these beautiful birds in a bid to stabilise their population.

FISHWAYS

Many of our region’s fish populations are ‘Diadromous’ fish that travel between salt and freshwater as part of their life and breeding cycles. In 2015 the Mackay Whitsunday Fish Barrier Prioritisation Report investigated 3974 potential barriers that prevent, delay or obstruct their migration, impacting population numbers.

Reef Catchments and other

regional partners have used the report to guide and focus future efforts on installing and repairing existing fishways, otherwise known as fish ladders, that facilitate the natural migration of fish. Fishways monitoring programs have shown that works completed on the prioritised areas quickly achieve outstanding results in terms of increasing number of fish and numbers of species repopulating inland waterways.

WETLANDS

The Biodiversity team at Reef Catchments has a long involvement in the rehabilitation of wetland sites in the region, focusing on restoring these vital ecosystems to enhance wildlife habitats and maintain ecological balance. Their efforts contribute significantly to the conservation of biodiversity in these areas.

The team engaged in a long-term project at Sandringham Wetlands, just south of Mackay, which serves as a showcase study. This project was conducted in cooperation with the landowner to create a balance between

wetland conservation and sustainable farming practices. Restoration activities at the wetlands included weed management, installation of fishways and the integration of beneficial farm management practices.

Landholder Jason Bradford is quick to describe the benefits of protecting what he sees as a very special asset. “What I want (for my property) is to be a financially viable enterprise, as well as the best outcomes for nature”

REEF RESCUE Paving the Way for Future Initiatives

As part of the Australian Government’s Caring for Our Country Program, The Reef Rescue initiative was launched with the aim of enhancing the water quality entering the Great Barrier Reef.

HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY TO REEF CATCHMENTS

Between 2008 and 2013, Reef Catchments implemented the program in the Mackay Whitsunday region to fast-track water quality benefits associated with improved farm management practices. The project outcomes for sugarcane, grazing and horticulture exceeded original expectations and it became foundational to the design and delivery of subsequent water quality programs.

The Mackay Whitsunday Water Quality Improvement Plan was used to identify a range of specific improved land management practices , based on the best available science and information for improving on-farm economic and environmental sustainability. The delivery process focused on increased adoption of these improved land management practices across agricultural properties in the region.

In total, 1,286 projects involving 942 land managers were funded, including 718 cane farmers, 204 graziers, and 20 horticulturists. At the outset of the program, Reef Catchments established working groups that were instrumental in building foundational industry partnerships and which were critical to the program’s success.

It was noted the Reef Rescue program also contributed to additional community benefits such as social engagement, economic growth, and technological innovation. It fostered community involvement in environmental issues, supported local economies through project funding, and introduced new technologies that reduced harmful runoff, setting new standards for sustainable practices.

Following on from Reef Rescue, Reef Catchments has continued to support projects to increase knowledge and undertake on-ground works, ensuring that productive land in the region benefits while contributing to improved water quality flowing to the reef.

REEF TRUST 4

Combating Erosion for Reef Resilience

Between 2017 and 2023, the Reef Trust 4 program made significant strides in combating stream bank erosion in the Mackay Whitsunday region, particularly along the O’Connell River and St. Helens and Murray creeks.

It had been calculated approximately 2.9M m3 had been lost from stream bank erosion over nine years along 82kms of river in the O’Connell River/St Helens and Murray creeks. Streambank erosion and sediment loss directly harm water quality and threaten the resilience of coral reefs. This compromises the reef’s ability to recover from environmental stresses, affecting its overall health and sustainability.

The project was large scale, delivered over a six year project and provided significant challenges for the Reef Catchments Waterways team.

The nature and size of the project required focused strategic planning and implementation

along with strong collaboration with landholders and local businesses.

The program’s efforts included collaboration with 31 local properties to reduce sediment flow into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon by 10,356 tonnes and the planting of over 70,000 trees to strengthen 25 hectares of riparian zones.

The initiative not only helped reduce erosion but also supported local job creation, improved regional environmental assets, and provided community education on sustainable land management techniques.

The success of Reef Trust 4 in Mackay Whitsunday region shines through its innovative approach to stream bank remediation and distinguishes it as a leader in the field.

The important learnings and experiences from this and the Disaster Recovery program continue to pave the way for future environmental investments in the region.

LAND BASED INITIATIVES FOR REEF WATER QUALITY

Water flowing through the land catchment area into the Great Barrier Reef plays an important role in the health of the reef ecosystem. Water run-off carrying pollutants, sediments, and nutrients from erosion, agriculture and urban activities threatens coral health, resilience and the overall biodiversity of the reef.

The first Mackay Whitsunday Water Quality Improvement Plan, developed in 2007-2008, was a significant step in providing crucial information on water quality flowing through the catchment to the sea. This plan created a strong foundation for the programs that would follow over the next two decades.

Monitoring water quality remains an important activity for Reef Catchments. Regional data collection directly contributes vital data to long-term monitoring projects such as the Paddock to Reef Program and Healthy Rivers to Reef Partnership.

At Reef Catchments, water quality data feeds into strategic planning for project implementation and supports landholders to make informed decisions around management practices.

Ultimately, understanding regional water quality issues, allows for better targeted land based initiatives to improve water quality flowing to the

REPAIRING THE LANDSCAPE

Cyclone Debbie’s impact in 2017 was severe, causing widespread damage across the region and significantly impacting local communities and ecosystems. Reef Catchments responded rapidly and proactively to provide a comprehensive assessment of regional environmental damage. The speed with which the assessment was compiled and submitted lead to the receipt of significant funding toward regional landscape remediation. The Disaster Recovery program received $6.2 million over 2 years across 33 sites. Work

included streambank remediation, riparian vegetation planting and works to rebuild landscape resilience and protect valuable productive agricultural landscapes.

The project was executed swiftly, engaging local businesses to ensure timely delivery across the region. This efficiency not only led to the successful completion of the initial project but also paved the way for subsequent work and projects, establishing Reef Catchments as an efficient delivery vehicle, outstanding for a not-for-profit organisation.

WHITSUNDAY REEF ISLANDS INITIATIVE: Strengthening Reef and Community After Cyclone Debbie

Tropical Cyclone Debbie caused extensive damage not only to the regional landscape, it also heavily impacted underwater ecosystems. This disaster was a key factor underpinning the formation of a Great Barrier Reef Foundation project - the Whitsundays Reef Islands Initiative (WRII). Managed by Reef Catchments, this groundbreaking project focuses on positioning the Whitsundays as a global hub for inshore fringing reef stewardship.

Local stewardship benefits both the community and the reef by fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership over environmental conservation. Over time this leads to better outcomes for reef health, while also strengthening community ties, promoting sustainable practices and supporting regional tourism.

The WRII coral and seagrass restoration

projects were Reef Catchments’ first venture into ‘in-water’ projects, marking a significant shift in its conservation strategy.

As 2022 unfolded, while continuing to deliver the Whitsunday Reef Islands Initiative, Reef Catchments recognised the need to formalise its efforts towards preserving the Great Barrier Reef. This led to the establishment of a dedicated Reef Team. Since then, the team has expanded, adding a Senior Project Officer and developing a strategic plan . This plan not only outlines potential Reef research partnerships but also pinpoints critical marine ecosystems to prioritise moving forward. The addition of the Reef Team and strategic planning underscored Reef Catchments’ ongoing commitment to enhancing reef resilience and conservation efforts.

THE LEGACY CONTINUES WITH DEALER PRINCIPAL ROBERT FILBY

Two of the pioneering families of Proserpine and the broader region were joined as one with the union of the Filby family and the Abell family in the mid 1950’s. This union set in motion a love story that has lasted through the decades and a legacy that has spanned generations. Robert Filby Senior married Thelma Abell, their love bringing together two powerful local families and a wealth of industry within the transport sector. This established the legacy of Filby’s Motors which opened its doors in 1964 and now lives on with their children and grandchildren to this day.

In 1981, the love story continued when Dealer Principal of Filby’s Motors, Robert Filby, married his high-school sweetheart Sue. The couple were blessed with four children and, after more than 40 years together, now enjoy watching their four grandchildren blossom as well. Robert feels very grateful to share such a long life with Sue and considers family the most important success in his life.

Leaving school at 15, Robert pursued an apprenticeship as a butcher, completing the trade before moving into the family business in 1978. Over the years Robert has gained experience in almost every aspect of the business, working in every department to gather an

understanding of how each section operates and drives the business as a whole. This experience led Robert Filby to become Dealer Principal, a position he still holds to this day after 35 years of successfully leading the business.

Wearing the test of time, Robert Filby has experienced many challenges over the years, but on each occasion has been able to pivot and prevail, safely guiding the business to move with the times and adapt to changing markets. It is now a proud moment when Robert is beginning to see the next generation come forward, as his daughter Rebecca Filby steps into more of a leadership role. This cements the succession plan that will see Filby’s Motors become a three-generation business.

A family man, a man of industry and a man of community, Robert Filby prides himself on his compassion and connection with others. He loves supporting events and charities, participating in local sporting groups and watching his local community thrive. When he was in his twenties, Robert travelled the world and has fond memories of his time oversees. These days he enjoys being at home with family and loves art, model building, golf and gardening. He also loves watching both the cricket and NRL with the Cowboys being his favourite team.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FILBY FAMILY ON A SUCCESSFUL 60 YEARS OF BUSINESS IN OUR COMMUNITY

CONNECTING THE PARTS WITH DIRECTOR BRIAN FILBY

At the heart of every successful business is the person who connects the departments and brings operations together to ensure seamless flow, quality workmanship and precision delivery. At Filby’s Motors, that person is Brian Filby, who not only unites the team but also connects the business with the broader community when opportunity arises.

As a Director of the company and Parts Manager, Brian is a qualified Mechanic and Parts Interpreter. He is the fountain of knowledge for every pipe, fitting, screw and engine part any of their vehicles may need when it’s time for a service. Wherever possible, he engages with the local community, opting to spend money within the region and keep the dollars flowing within the Whitsundays.

It is this community spirit that makes him a well-respected individual and he is well-known for supporting the local causes that can often fly under the radar. He is a strong proponent of supporting aged care and support related services, as he feels these community groups are often overlooked.

Born in Proserpine, Brian has lived in Cannonvale for the last 58 years. In his youth, he was a keen sportsperson, even travelling overseas to play sport. He has three adult children and two lively dogs that keep him entertained. When he enjoys a moment of relaxation, Brian can be found out in the garden or taking the dogs down to the beach.

Describing himself as quiet, patient and fair, Brian recalls one of the most significant times of his life as

the day each of his three children were born. He dreams of one day going on holiday to a location he has never been to before and says his favourite movie is ‘The Choice’.

DRIVING THE FUTURE WITH GENERAL MANAGER REBECCA

FILBY

Born in Proserpine in December 1982 and raised in Cannonvale, Rebecca Filby’s roots run deep in the Whitsundays Region. After a brief stint in Townsville at 18, she returned home and has lived across the region—from Cannonvale to Jubilee Pocket, Airlie Beach to Bowen—before settling in Proserpine for the past eight years.

Family is at the heart of Rebecca’s life. Married to Joel Altmann for five years and together for nine, they share two boys, Eric, 7, and Dylan, 4. Their family wouldn’t be complete without their two dogs, Callie, 13, and Benji, 10, who were Rebecca’s ‘first children’. Weekends are often spent travelling, enjoying family vacations at caravan parks, and creating lasting memories with their sons.

Rebecca’s career journey is marked by diversity and success. She began in the Jewellery Industry in 2002, where she quickly distinguished herself, owning a jewellery business and becoming a Diamond Broker by age 24. After nine years in the industry, she transitioned to banking, starting as a Teller with Westpac in Proserpine before advancing

to Personal Banker in 2012. Her career continued to rise when she became the Bank Manager in Bowen in 2014, a role she held for four years.

Celebrating 20 years in business last year, Eclipse Financial Planning is thrilled to announce the beginning of a new and exciting era, one that sees this iconic local business move into a modern setting and a brand-new office space on Carlo Drive in Cannonvale. Here, the dedicated team can spread their wings and extend a heartfelt welcome to new and existing clients. The office space boasts stylish design touches, atmospheric greenery and comfortable hightech meeting rooms.

Established in 2003 and originating in Airlie Beach, Eclipse Financial Planning is dedicated to providing a tailored approach to helping their clients achieve their financial goals. The highly experienced team of three Financial Advisors, two Client Service Managers and three Support Staff is led by their fearless leader, Justin Butler who has been a Financial Planner for the past 33 years.

After two decades located at their modest office space on Island Drive, the Eclipse team decided it was time to expand. The move to this larger, modern space enables Eclipse to offer a more comfortable setting for their clients and is conveniently located just two minutes from Whitsunday Plaza on the new industrial estate complex.

The all-new office is open-plan and has vaulted-ceilings which add to an uplifting sense of space and light. The thoughtfully designed interview rooms and spacious board room maintain the privacy to deal with personal financial matters, leaving plenty of scope for all three advisors to see different clients at the same time. Managing Director & Financial Adviser, Justin Butler, says that the new space prevents any clashes, and opens up availability for their clients:

“We are all available to see clients pretty much at any time because there are three interview offices,” he explains.

The primary driver for the move was to improve the client’s experience with Eclipse, and to keep up with the changing trends of Cannonvale:

“Our previous office was quite old and dated and the business hub at Cannonvale is effectively moving out towards Whitsunday Plaza, with the post office and the banks, so it was time to make a move and we’re very happy with how it’s all worked out.”

In addition to its more convenient location and all-new office spacing, having new subtenants’ positions Eclipse for potential future expansion in 10 or 15 years if desired, allowing their new workplace to continue to transition in the future with their ever-growing business. Alongside the new workplace Managing Director, Justin Butler, is extremely happy with the solid and seasoned team he has now at Eclipse. Offering a seamless and professional service, each advisor shares the same mentality and integrity which makes their expert advice united and beneficial for all their clients.

Eclipse’s main value has always been exceptional customer service for their clients. While the government has mandated customer service in the financial planning field since the global financial crisis in the last five or six years, Eclipse has already been doing it for 20.

Putting the customer front and centre is what sets them apart from the rest.

Find out how you could benefit from solid financial advice by calling into Eclipse’s brand-new office space at 4/1 Carlo Drive in Cannonvale today.

What does the future hold for Eclipse?

Eclipse is looking forward to a period of growth, and with their beautiful new workspace Eclipse has the availability to do more community-based events. The team is looking at kicking off a fantastic Christmas in July event annually, which is not just for their clients but also for the community.

8 HABITS OF THE WORLD’S BEST MANAGERS

Managers have a huge impact on business outcomes — they influence at least 70 per cent of your employees’ engagement. The majority of employees state that the quality of their manager is more important that their salary!

Teams with talented managers can realise a 48 per cent increase in profitability, a 22 per cent increase in productivity and a 30 per cent increase in employee engagement scores (Gallup, 2018).

Here are the eight habits of the world’s best managers according to Gallup:

1. Always communicate the reason WHY – most employees are at least a little unsure about how their work fits into the “big picture”, so when a change is required many employees lack motivation, as they don’t understand the WHY. Communicate the WHY and engage your employees on the journey.

2. Be open to new ideas from your team –change requires innovation. New managers often feel like they ought to be the ones with all

the answers but true leaders are open to new ideas and encourage thinking outside the box.

3. Admit and accept mistakes – continual improvement can only be achieved through honest conversation; the best managers lead with accountability.

4. Communicate well and connect frequently – check in regularly with your individual team members and use coaching conversations to motivate your team when they are flat.

5. Discover what motivates people besides money – do they enjoy meeting new people? Mastering new skills? Working in the background? To motivate your team members, figure out how to reframe projects in a way that is uniquely compelling for them.

6. Explain why your team matters and celebrate excellence – how many employees show up to work for years and never feel like they matter? The best managers give recognition, feedback and celebrate the wins – even the small ones!

7. Work Life Balance – realise that you must care about your team’s lives outside of work, as life impacts work performance in a huge way. The best managers know, at an appropriate level, what’s going on in an employee’s life.

8. Always be on the lookout for new stars to promote –identify and develop new leaders. Bad managers focus on the past and what can’t be changed. Average managers focus on the present –the issue at hand. But the best managers focus on the future – what does future success look like?

SUPPORTING FARMERS, ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME MALENY

DAIRIES

From milk that tastes ‘just like it used to when we were kids,’ Maleny Dairies is an award-winning, family-owned and operated business committed to sustainability for people, place and products.

Twenty-four years ago, Ross and Sally Hopper made the courageous decision to build their own processing and bottling plant and purchase milk from local dairy farms. At the heart of their business is the commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for Australia’s dairy industry by paying a fair price to farmers for the high-quality milk they produce.

The success of Maleny Dairies can be greatly attributed to its 12 dairy farming families who produce high-quality milk. Maleny Dairies is proud to support, purchase and process milk from local dairy farmers. When consumers purchase Maleny Dairies’ products, they know they are supporting hard-working local dairy farmers

For more than two decades, the Hoppers have supplied Queenslanders with a suite of milks, creams, custard and yoghurt.

“Our loyal followers love our Farmer’s Choice Milk,

which is pasteurised only, allowing for a delicious layer of cream on top of the milk. We endeavour to keep processing to a minimum and produce milk that is as close as possible to fresh cow’s milk. You’re going to love the taste of it!” – Ross Hopper.

Since 2021, Ross and Sally have expanded their product range now incorporating a Lactose Free Full Cream Milk and Cream.

“Lactose intolerant consumers are seeking dairy products with the least amount of processing while still tasting great. Our team worked tirelessly to create a lactose-free milk that tastes like fresh milk – which the whole household can enjoy.”

More recently, Ross and Sally were provided the opportunity to expand their reach into Far North Queensland.

“We’re delighted that more Queenslanders will now have the opportunity to enjoy our products, allowing us to support more farmers and keep Queensland’s dairy industry alive.

FIND YOUR DREAM With These Top

Getting ready to buy your first house? Does the beautiful Whitsundays or Scenic Mackay look like the right place for your next home? Here are all the tips you need to navigate what some people call the most important purchase you will make.

Evaluate your financial situation... are you ready to buy a home?

Ensuring you have the financial means to purchase your first home is crucial in the home-buying process. Start by assessing your budget: review your income, savings, and expenses to determine what you can afford. Additionally, calculate your debt-to-income ratio (DTI) to ensure it aligns with lending requirements.

In evaluating your financial situation, don’t overlook your credit score. A strong score can provide you with better mortgage rates alongside increased opportunities. Checking your score before starting the home-buying process allows you to take steps to improve it if necessary.

Mortgage Minefield

When looking at mortgage options and advisors, it is always best to shop before you buy. With a

variety of loan options available, finding one that best fits your needs is essential.

After selecting your preferred mortgage route, the next step is to get pre-approved. This process not only strengthens your position in a competitive housing market but also provides a clearer picture of your budget.

The fun part...creating a wish list!

After navigating the mortgage maze, it’s time for the exciting part – crafting your wish list for your new home!

I’m sure you have pictured or even dreamt about what your first home might look like, but now it is time to make it a reality. What are your must-haves?

Consider factors like size, location, and number of bedrooms. Is the property close to a good school? Is it easy commute to work? These are all the questions you should be asking ahead of the big buy!

Find a trusty real estate agent

Finding a good real estate agent allows for a more seamless homebuying experience. The agents

can assist with the paperwork, guide you through every step of the transaction and make sure you understand all the tricky terms and conditions.

Trusty real estate agent secured? Let the house hunting begin. Remember to write yourself a comprehensive description of each house and take photos to help them stick in the forefront of your mind when navigating numerous properties.

Dream home found?

You’ve found your dream home—congratulations! What’s next?

It’s now time to make an offer! Don’t go through this process alone; collaborate closely with your real estate agent to enhance your chances of securing the property. Approach your offers with confidence and be ready for any counter-offers that may arise.

Once you have placed your offer, ensure you schedule a professional home inspection, to uncover any issues with the property you might not have considered.

Finalise Finances and Secure your property!

Now it’s time to finalise your mortgage and sign the paperwork for your dream first home. The hard work is done, you can now start decorating!

Common pitfalls for first-time buyers to avoid:

1. Letting your emotions rule the roost: buying your first home can be a stressful and lead to impulsive decisions. While buying your first home can be exciting and overwhelming, try to stay calm to avoid making decisions based on aesthetics.

2. Overstretching your budget: While it may be easy to say ‘we can afford a little more,’ it’s a slippery slope. Your dream home within your budget is waiting for you!

3. Forgetting the hidden costs: The purchase price is just the beginning. Be sure to factor in additional expenses such as the deposit, transfer fees, mortgage registration fees, loan application fees, ongoing costs, lender’s mortgage insurance, and conveyancing legal fees. Make a comprehensive budget to avoid any financial surprises.

PUMPED HYDRO

IS UNQUESTIONABLY THE RIGHT TECHNOLOGY TO ENABLE QUEENSLAND’S

We possess a unique opportunity to shape the future of energy and regional development.

Queensland Hydro is driven by an unwavering commitment to lead and deliver positive change – not just for the energy system itself, but in how we support and partner with the communities in which we operate, how we care for the environment, how we can provide massive opportunities for businesses and industry, and how we provide employment opportunities in the developing renewable energy sector.

Queensland Hydro was established by the Queensland Government to design, deliver, operate and maintain long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets that will be the cornerstone for the

transformation of the state’s energy system.

We are progressing two pumped hydro energy storage systems – the 2,000MW Borumba Project west of the Sunshine Coast and the 5,000MW Pioneer-Burdekin Project in the Pioneer Valley west of Mackay.

WHAT IS PUMPED HYDRO?

Pumped hydro is a proven and mature technology that has been used for more than 100 years around the world to generate and store energy. Hydropower is the largest single source of renewable energy, with pumped storage hydropower providing more than 90 per cent of all stored energy in the world. It works like a large, rechargeable battery by using

water, geography and the force of gravity to store and generate energy when the grid needs it most.

Pumped hydro captures and stores energy that is generated on windy and sunny days that is in excess of the needs of the grid that would otherwise be lost. It works by having upper and lower reservoirs. It uses the surplus energy generated by solar and wind to pump the water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir. When renewable energy supply is running low and unable to meet demand, like at night time or other peak usage periods, the stored water from the upper reservoir is released through underground pipes that run through turbines to generate electricity that is then returned to the grid for Queensland homes and businesses.

HOW WILL PUMPED HYDRO ENABLE THE ENERGY TRANSITION?

Queensland Parliament has legislated emission targets to reach net zero by 2050 and to achieve this outcome we need to reliably transition our energy system away from traditional generating sources that rely on fossil fuels so there is 50% renewable energy generation by 2030, 70% by 2032 and 80% by 2035.

Queensland will need at least 6,000MW of long duration storage for a highly renewable system. It is Queensland Hydro’s job to provide the pumped hydro assets to make the shift to renewable energy a reality for Queenslanders.

WHY MACKAY AND THE PIONEER VALLEY?

Mackay is no stranger to being an Australian and Queensland powerhouse. It’s a leader in mining and sugar, and is fast becoming known for its growth in biofuels and critical minerals processing. Our projects will offer Queensland’s homes and businesses reliable and stable clean energy – a huge benefit when businesses are trying to demonstrate their green credentials to customers, investors and overseas markets.

The renewable transition can drive the next phase of significant economic growth for Mackay, the Greater Whitsundays and Isaac regions.

The proposed site for the Pioneer-Burdekin Project is an ideal location for pumped hydro due to 700m of elevation and short tunnel lengths between upper and lower reservoirs which creates the potential for huge energy storage and generation, while maintaining a compact surface area.

Compared to Snowy 2.0 which has tunnel lengths of about 27 kilometres between reservoirs, the proposed Pioneer-Burdekin Project will have tunnel lengths of about 3 kilometres.

How does pumped hydro energy storage work?

SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES, JOBS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES

These projects are history making – they’ll deliver benefits to our communities for decades to come. From job creation, cleaner energy, economic opportunities, and environmental and social improvements, there’s a world of opportunity for Queenslanders now, and well into the future.

We are developing a Community Benefits Framework that will support community initiatives to deliver positive legacy projects so regional towns can thrive and we will work with locals to co-design these benefits.

Job creation is one of the main benefits that is often outlined whenever a big new project is proposed, but the positive impacts on the surrounding communities are much broader and further reaching than that. Alongside the thousands of workers needed during the construction period, our two projects will inject hundreds of millions of dollars into the regional economy through local supply chains.

We have partnered with Resources Centre of Excellence to deliver training and skills transition to provide opportunities for workers right here in the Mackay region.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

As a renewable energy project, we are intent on being nature positive and deliver benefits to the environment over and above the long-term climate benefits of our pumped hydro projects.

We share Queenslanders’ desire to protect our natural environment. We’re committed to leaving the environment we’re operating in better off overall as a result of our proposed projects.

Climate change is one of the biggest threats to Australia’s and Queensland’s unique biodiversity. It is also now recognised as the greatest long-term threat to the Great Barrier Reef.

Decarbonising the energy system is the right thing to do. Our modelling indicates the 2,000MW Borumba Project will enable up to 4 million tonnes of CO2 to be avoided each year, and our 5,000MW PioneerBurdekin Project will enable around 7 million tonnes of CO2 to be avoided. When you think our assets can be operated for more than 50 years, and up to 100-years with good maintenance, this is really significant.

THE PATHWAY TO APPROVALS

Queenslanders would expect infrastructure of the scale of the Pioneer-Burdekin Project to undergo robust planning, and that is exactly what we are doing. We are still conducting initial investigations and compiling a Detailed Analytical Report with all the information and options for the government to make an informed decision.

If supported, we are required to obtain approvals from the federal and state governments. We have to demonstrate that pumped hydro is needed, that the impacts are acceptable, and that all of the economic, environmental and social benefits that we’ve promised will flow.

A FINAL WORD

These projects really do offer a world of opportunity – to deliver nature-positive outcomes, new jobs, new industries, regional development, local investment and community benefits.

This is our chance to build once in a generation assets that leave a valuable legacy while also creating real benefits in real-time for our industries and communities.

Queensland Hydro is privileged to take on this task for all Queenslanders.

FORGED IN THE THE RISE OF RICHGLEN

In the high-stakes arena of mining, where fortunes often rise and fall with the tides of the industry, Matt Borg’s decision to build a business during the downturn was nothing short of courageous. Instead of waiting for the boom, he chose to forge ahead when others were scaling back, betting on his vision and work ethic to carve out a place for Richglen Maintenance Services Pty Ltd.

10 years ago, at a time when the mining industry was in a severe downturn, many mining maintenance companies were downsizing. Matt saw an opportunity. While others were scaling back, he made a bold decision to gain a foothold in the industry.

At 41 years old, with many years of experience in the mines behind him, Matt decided to strike out on his own. Before making the leap, he sought advice from a trusted mentor—someone who had seen the ups and downs of the industry and could provide a grounded perspective.

“If I was going to get back into the industry, I thought I’d do it on my own, by providing what the industry needed in a cost-effective way,” Matt said.

With nothing more than a ute and some tools, he began the daunting task of building his business from the ground up.

“I went out to the mines, talked to old clients, and

before I started the business, I planted the seed,” Matt explained.

It was late 2013, and the industry was reeling from the downturn. Money was tight, and companies were looking for cost-effective solutions without the massive overheads of larger corporate outfits. Matt’s pitch was simple but effective: a small, financially viable team that could deliver maintenance and shutdown services at a reduced cost.

“Those clients were enthusiastic for the new business model,” Matt says.

“It gave me confidence to press forward and start the business.”

His first break came with a job as a planner at Peak Downs, followed by work at Saraji and Oaky Creek, where he built the company to six employees.

About ten months after starting, Richglen landed its first major contract at Curragh Mine. This was a pivotal moment for the business.

“I employed a couple of key technical experts who later became Richglen shareholders, Damien Friederichs and Guy Roberts,” Matt recalls.

“We picked up that maintenance contract, and that was our first significant stepping stone for the business.”

Around two months later, Michael Rossi joined the business. “Michael came on board as our fourth shareholder and further complemented the business’s technical strength and large-scale project planning capabilities. This began to round off the four points of the company’s structure—Mechanical, Structural, Project Management, and Business Acumen,” Matt explains.

The real turning point came with a significant project at Rolleston Mine. Richglen was tasked with the challenge of lowering and raising the boom of a dragline at Rolleston Mine. The team executed this complex operation in an impressive five-day turnaround, a timeframe that would often be scheduled for a 10-day outage. This achievement not only saved the client money by reducing production stoppages but also solidified Richglen’s reputation as a company that could deliver quality work, efficiently and safely.

As the business grew, so did Matt’s commitment to his team. He believed that the success of Richglen was intrinsically tied to the success of its people. From the beginning, Matt valued his employees as the most important asset of the company.

“You can spend a lot of money on tooling, vehicles, and other equipment, however, you can’t buy people off the shelf,” Matt says.

Matt’s philosophy is simple: “If you don’t give people what they want personally to achieve their goals,

THE DOWNTURN

you’ll lose them to somewhere else eventually.”

At the core of Matt’s entrepreneurial spirit is a deep-seated commitment to family values, which has been a driving force behind Richglen’s success. Matt’s wife, Katrina, and their three children—Jye, a plumber with his own business; Ethan, an electrician at Dalrymple Bay; and Brielle, who runs her own hair salon—are all reflections of the family-first ethos that Matt upholds.

“Work is there to supplement a successful life, not the other way around.”

This belief is evident in the way he runs the business, always ensuring that employees have the flexibility to achieve their personal goals and spend quality time with their loved ones.

This focus on people is also evident in Richglen’s approach to training and development. The company has established a strong relationship with universities, bringing in graduate mechanical and electrical engineers for six-month placements. This program has been running for around six years, and many of the graduates have gone on to become key members of the Richglen team. It’s a testament to Matt’s belief in nurturing talent and building a sustainable business that will continue to thrive long after he steps back from the day-to-day operations.

“We bring two to three engineering students in each year,” Matt explains.

Richglen specialises in mechanical, electrical, and structural repairs for the resource industry. Its expertise includes maintaining and overhauling draglines, shovels, conveyors, and CHPPs, as well as handling general maintenance and shutdown activities. The business also offers consultative support through specialised planning and supervisory personnel, ensuring high-quality project execution and asset management.

“They begin their placement as Trades Assistants and progress into project controls engineering. We maintain contact with them after they return to uni, so when they graduate, hopefully, they come back to us.”

This year, Richglen is celebrating its 10th anniversary, a milestone that marks not just a decade in business but a decade of overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities. The company has grown from a one-man operation into a major player in the Bowen Basin, with a reputation for delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective mechanical and electrical services to the resource industry.

The recent completion of a custom-built premises at Dozer Drive in Paget is a testament to how far the company has come. This new facility, which includes an office and logistics space, is just the first stage of a larger plan. Another purposebuilt workshop is staged for the future, further expanding Richglen’s capabilities and reinforcing its commitment to the industry.

“Stage one is complete,” Matt shares.

“Stage two will be a future workshop on the same block of land.”

Looking back on the past decade, Matt remains

humble and grounded. He never forgets where he started, borrowing his father’s ute and relying on the support of his family to get the business off the ground. It’s this connection to his roots that has shaped Richglen’s culture and values.

As Richglen embarks on its second decade, the company is poised for continued success through strategic diversification by expanding and enhancing its service portfolio and securing its future against industry fluctuations.

And for Matt, that legacy is built on the principles that have guided him from the beginning: hard work, resilience, and the unwavering belief that anything is possible when you back yourself and the people around you.

“If you employ good people and give them opportunity, you can’t fail,” Matt says.

“One of my roles as a business owner is to provide pathways for people to improve and grow for their own success. The business needs to be sustainable, and I won’t be here forever, so who will carry on the legacy after we’re gone?

“Those people we are developing now, they are the future of Richglen.”

A NAME WITH HEART AND HERITAGE

Ever wondered where the name “Richglen” comes from?

It’s a tale that marries tradition with ambition, bridging the world of equine grace with industrial prowess. The story begins with Matt Borg, the founder of Richglen Maintenance Services Pty Ltd. Matt was raised on the Borg family farm in Mackay, where his life revolved around horses from a young age. Riding since the age of four, Matt spent his childhood and early adulthood competing in Pony Club Gymkhanas, Bushman Carnivals, and making his mark in the campdrafting arena.

Matt’s father, George Borg, was a devoted horse breeder for over 50 years, registering the stud name “Richglen Stock Horses” with the Australian Stock Horse Society in 1972. The name was a nod to the family’s roots – their property is at the boundary of Richmond and Glenella – and became synonymous with quality and dedication in the horse breeding community.

When Matt decided to start his own maintenance business, he found himself with nothing more

than a vision and drive for success. He needed more than just a dream—he needed the means to bring it to life. Turning to his father for support, Matt borrowed George’s ute to travel to mine sites and pitch his business idea. It was during one of these conversations that his father, in a moment of profound support, said, “Mate, I have no idea what you do out there, but if you think you can do it, then I will back you.”

That simple yet powerful vote of confidence was more than just words; it was a lifeline. George loaned Matt $40,000, allowing him to purchase the first Richglen ute, RMS01, and the essential tooling he needed to start his business.

The decision to name the company after the family’s

horse stud was a tribute to the values instilled in Matt from a young age—values of hard work, dedication, and the importance of family. Today, while the days of breeding horses are mostly behind them, the legacy of Richglen lives on, not just in the paddocks of Mackay but in every project Matt and his team undertake.

The family farm, once bustling with horse breeding activity, now stands as a symbol of where it all began. The resident stallion, a stalwart of the Richglen Stock Horses name, has been retired, with a few old broodmares still grazing peacefully—a quiet yet powerful reminder of the roots that gave rise to a business grounded in family values and hard work.

FROM FARMLAND TO FRAMEWORK

MICHAEL ROSSI

From the cane fields of Far North Queensland to leading major mining projects in the Bowen Basin, Michael Rossi’s journey has been one marked by perseverance, growth, and a love for engineering. Born and raised on a cane farm just south of Cairns, Michael’s early years were spent working on the family farm, but his ambition took him further afield. After completing his Mechanical Engineering degree at James Cook University in Townsville, he ventured to Sydney, where he spent two years in high-rise air conditioning before ultimately finding his calling in mining.

“I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some great people who have helped me along the way,” Michael says, reflecting on his two decades working for local engineering businesses. His experience in the mining industry, paired with his knack for problem-solving, paved the way for him to take on increasingly complex projects, specialising in major equipment shutdowns and high-pressure situations.

As an experienced project manager, Michael’s focus is in major equipment shutdowns—short, intense maintenance projects where precision and teamwork are essential.

“Every project is challenging, but the key is

bringing people together to meet our clients’ expectations on cost, time, and quality. And, of course, our primary focus is ensuring no one gets hurt,” he said.

“It’s the work of our employees that defines our reputation. We’re lucky to have strong working relationships with our core clients, and together we’ve delivered some great outcomes.”

As Richglen moves into a new chapter with a new building, Michael is optimistic about the future.

“I’m hopeful that in five years, Richglen will still offer services that make our clients’ jobs easier, and we’ll be thought of as a partner of choice,” he says.

Outside of the demands of work, Michael enjoys fishing around Mackay, catching up with family and friends, and watching his daughter play rugby league. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance in the resource industry can be tough, but Michael has some practical advice.

“It’s important to dedicate time on the weekend to yourself, so work doesn’t become the only thing you’re known for.”

What is a personal life lesson you can share?

“Be happy with where you are at.”

"As we celebrate Richglen's 10th anniversary, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our customers, suppliers, and incredible team. Your loyalty and unwavering support have been the backbone of our success. Here’s to the next 10 years!"

A STEADY HAND BEHIND RICHGLEN’S RISE DAMIEN FRIEDERICHS

amien Friederichs has always been a man who knows how to turn the gears, both literally and figuratively.

Starting his career as a Fitter and Turner in the sugar mills, he honed his craft in the heart of the industry. But it was his 15-year tenure at a local engineering business that forged his path in the mining world, particularly his deep interest in draglines and shovels—a fascination that would later become a cornerstone of his expertise.

Damien’s commitment to excellence in these colossal machines was just the beginning of a journey that led him to Richglen Maintenance Services, where he became an integral force in its success. He was appointed as a business partner of Richglen a few years after joining the team, bringing his extensive industry experience and leadership to the company.

What truly sets Richglen apart, according to Damien, is its bedrock of strong relationships.

“From the beginning, it has been our relationships and respect for our clients and our workforce that has helped us to build great teams and culture,” Damien shares.

He’s the kind of leader who values camaraderie and a good laugh, all while fostering a work culture that thrives on positivity and mutual respect. His vision for the company’s future is rooted in growth, but with a nod to where it all began—mentoring the next generation of workers while ensuring that Richglen’s close-knit, high-spirited culture remains intact.

“My goal is to continue mentoring and passing on my knowledge to the new and existing work crews and keep the working relationships we have alive with a few jokes and laughs along the way,” he adds.

Away from the heavy machinery, Damien finds balance in his life with his partner and daughter, enjoying the serenity of their sugarcane and cattle property.

What advice do you have for a school leaver wanting to get into the resources industry?

“Always chase a trade or traineeship first, then give us a go, so we can get you a start in the maintenance

CRAFTING CONNECTIONS, BUILDING SUCCESS GUY ROBERTS

With a wealth of experience in mine maintenance across the Bowen Basin, Guy Roberts brings both grit and warmth to his role at Richglen Maintenance Services. Known for his hands-on approach, Guy has been integral to the company’s success, particularly in structural maintenance and construction, areas where his expertise shines.

Reflecting on his time at Richglen, he highlights one project as particularly rewarding.

“A recent BMA Caval Ridge Dragline ‘CD’ replacement.

“Having involvement throughout the planning and execution phases made it a memorable project.”

He became a shareholder of Richglen in 2016 and is passionate about the company’s growth and its people. He believes that what sets Richglen apart is simple yet powerful.

“It’s definitely the people that make the difference.”

For Guy, it’s this culture of respect and camaraderie that keeps him motivated, helping him drive the

business forward while maintaining the personal connections that have been the heart of Richglen’s success.

Outside of work, he unwinds by spending time with his wife, family, keeping active, and attending rodeos. His career has taken him to some fascinating places, but Guy recalls his time at Ranger, a uranium mine in Jabiru, NT, as particularly unique.

“It was the most regulated mine in the world, given it was in the middle of the Kakadu National Park,” he said.

Looking ahead, Guy envisions Richglen continuing to grow and diversify, staying true to its roots by “doing what we have always done”—delivering excellence while embracing new opportunities.

What is a life lesson you have learned throughout your career?

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a janitor or a CEO, everyone deserves to be treated with respect.”

Congratulations to Matt and the team on 10 years of business. We are delighted to have built your new facility in Dozer Drive and look forward to working together again in the future!

SEAMLESS EXECUTION IN DRE18 SHUTDOWN AT CAVAL RIDGE

Richglen Maintenance Services Pty Ltd

once again demonstrated its capability to handle complex, high-stakes projects with the DRE18 Shutdown 2021 at BMA Caval Ridge Mine. This project, centred around the intricate task of tub removal for rack and rail repairs on the Dragline Marion 8050, marked a significant milestone for Richglen as it was their first tub removal—a crucial operation in maintaining the functionality of this massive piece of equipment.

Richglen deployed a skilled team of 100 professionals, including boilermakers, fitters, riggers, trades assistants, and electricians, to ensure the project was executed with the highest level of precision and safety. The multidisciplinary team worked seamlessly together, leveraging their collective expertise to carry out the drag and swing gearbox overhauls that were essential to the project’s success.

Safety and efficiency were paramount throughout the DRE18 Shutdown, with the

project not only being completed on time but also under budget. Richglen’s commitment to safety was evident, with the project being executed without any recordable incidents—an achievement that shows the company’s rigorous safety protocols and its emphasis on creating a safe working environment.

This project further cemented Richglen’s reputation for excellence in the resource sector.

As a company with deep roots in Central Queensland, Richglen has consistently delivered high-quality, efficient, and safe maintenance services across various industries. The successful execution of the DRE18 Shutdown 2021 is a testament to their technical expertise, strong leadership, and ability to manage largescale, complex projects.

For Richglen, this project wasn’t just a routine shutdown; it was a pivotal moment that showcased their expanding capabilities in handling major overhauls and structural repairs.

PRECISION AND POWER IN SARAJI’S DRE18 REAR LEG REPLACEMENT

When the stakes are high, and the machinery is colossal, Richglen Maintenance Services Pty Ltd steps up to the challenge. At BMA Saraji Mine, the team took on a rare and technically demanding project, replacing the rear tri-structure legs on a Marion 8050 Dragline. This high-stakes operation not only tested their expertise but also highlighted their capacity to execute complex, large-scale tasks with remarkable precision.

The Saraji DRE18 Rear Leg Replacement involved the meticulous process of lowering the boom to remove and replace the rear tristructure legs on the Marion 8050 Dragline—an operation that presented unique challenges due to the uncommon nature of the repair and the size of the equipment involved.

The project required a highly skilled and coordinated workforce, with 76 employees, including boilermakers, fitters, riggers, trade

assistants, scaffolders, machinists, and crane operators, all contributing to the successful completion of this complex task. Richglen’s expertise was particularly evident in the detailed crane plan that was developed to facilitate the removal and replacement of the rear legs, a process rarely undertaken with the tri-structure still raised.

Safety, as always, was a paramount concern for Richglen, and the project was executed with an impeccable safety record—no incidents were reported throughout the duration of the work.

The Saraji DRE18 Rear Leg Replacement wasn’t merely a job well done; it was a high-stakes engineering feat that pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in dragline maintenance. This rare operation showcased Richglen’s unrivalled ability to tackle the extraordinary, reinforcing their position as trailblazers in the industry and setting a new standard for excellence in mining infrastructure repair.

ELECTRIFYING THE RESTART OF BURTON COAL MINE

Richglen Maintenance Services Pty Ltd powered up its reputation with the Burton Coal Mine Restart and LV Electrical Rectification project. This venture marked a pivotal moment for Richglen, as it sparked their entry into large-scale electrical work, highlighting their expanding skill set and dedication to delivering precise, industry-tailored solutions.

Located at Bowen Coking Coal’s Burton Downs Mine, the project began in May 2022, focusing on the electrical restoration of a site that had been dormant since 2016. After years of being closed, the mine’s infrastructure had fallen into disrepair. Richglen’s task was to breathe life back into these critical components, ensuring they were electrically repowered, tested for functionality, and repaired to meet operational standards. The project, which concluded in July 2023, still sees a small crew onsite, working on a 7/7 roster.

Richglen’s team worked on Coal Handling Preparation Plan (CHPP) modules 1 and 2, the village/camp, Train Load Out, reclaim conveyor, ROM, plant feed and product handling bins, and MIA warehouses and sheds. This required a multidisciplinary approach, with a workforce that at its peak included around 50 personnel, encompassing electricians, boilermakers, fitters, riggers, trade assistants, Franna operators, project managers, administrators, and engineers. This diversity in trades and expertise was critical to addressing the broad scope of work required to bring the mine’s operations back online.

Safety, teamwork, and technical excellence were the cornerstones of this project. Despite the challenges inherent in restoring a site that had been dormant for years, the team maintained an impeccable safety record, with no major incidents reported. The collaboration between Richglen’s crew and the

Bowen Coking Coal team was seamless, fostering a strong rapport which was essential to the project’s success. The ability to coordinate a large, multidisciplinary team across various locations and tasks was a significant achievement, demonstrating Richglen’s capability to manage complex, large-scale projects with precision and efficiency.

This project was not just another contract for Richglen—it was a landmark in the company’s history. As their first major electrical project, it showcased their ability to adapt and expand into new areas of expertise. The successful execution of the Burton Coal Mine Restart highlighted Richglen’s proficiency in providing not only mechanical and structural maintenance but also comprehensive electrical services, further solidifying its reputation as a versatile and reliable partner in the resource industry.

AN OUTDOOR MINE-SET

Sophie Clayton, who has called Mackay home since the age of four, has always had a deep connection with the outdoors so it was only natural that she pursued a career in that arena. Whether she’s boating around the islands, camping under the stars, or casting a line, Sophie finds her true joy in nature, often accompanied by her two beloved dogs and her partner.

Despite this love of the outdoors, however, it took Sophie a little time to find a career that allowed her to be out in nature. She initially explored university courses in nursing and teaching, but quickly realised neither path resonated with her. What she truly craved was a hands-on career that connected her to the outdoors. This realisation led her to pursue a trade—a decision that would prove both challenging and immensely rewarding.

Sophie began her apprenticeship in mining and then turned to Dunbar Electrical, a company she describes as incredibly supportive.

The apprenticeship has been the most significant and challenging experience of her life, pushing her

far beyond her comfort zone and testing her selfconfidence on a daily basis. Despite tough days filled with self-doubt, Sophie remains motivated by the long-term rewards and personal growth she experiences.

Through perseverance and a deep commitment to her chosen path, Sophie has embraced the many challenges that come with her trade. She takes immense pride in overcoming obstacles, both

personal and professional, and has grown into a more confident and capable individual.

Sophie’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of finding a career that truly fits, even if the path to discovery is winding and uncertain. Her story is one of resilience, determination, and the pursuit of a life that aligns with one’s passions—a journey that, while challenging, is ultimately worth every step.

FORGING A GREENER FUTURE

THE RAW METAL CORP REVOLUTION IN RECYCLING

says Todd.

trailblazer in transforming the metal recycling landscape. Founded in 2014 by Todd Wanless, Queensland’s largest scrap metal recyclers but stewardship and innovative recycling practices. With a commitment to reducing landfill waste and repurposing valuable materials, Raw Metal Corp is leading the charge in an industry that is both challenging and essential for our planet’s future.

changing the social landscape over the last 10 years, particularly the last five,” says Brett Crosby,

“The advent of bottle recycling has revitalised the concept of recycling, showing the positive impact it has and the increased relevance of it now that the world is so focused on climate change and our contribution to its impact.”

Todd Wanless, Founder and Managing Director said that Raw Metal Corp is at the forefront of developing new methods and ways of recycling.

efficiently to get the best yield from recyclable materials, thereby reducing the need for mining

“Along with repurposing and reusing, recycling plays a very important part in the environmental and social governance areas that have proven to be so important for businesses of all sizes

“The Mackay yard continues to grow as we apply the same ‘We Care’ attitude

“Our customer base has expanded councils with scrap metal recovery.

A significant milestone in their growth was the installation of the only hammer mill shredder in North Queensland, a gamechanger for metal recycling in transport material all the way back to Brisbane. We can process it right here in our Paget yard and export it out of Mackay Harbour to steel mills around the world,”

Customer interaction is not just a task; it’s a core value.

Brett said, “Our customer interaction is our key focus.”

“We are a small family business, and we like to be involved in our customers’ businesses to see how better we can serve them.”

This personal touch extends across all their operations, from dealing with large industrial customers to helping residential clients clear out a few kilos of scrap metal.

Wade Ruffin, Business Development Manager, adds, “We care about how we interact with our customers, the impression each interaction has on them, and whether this interaction is good enough for referral.”

“We strive to treat all our customers the same way, whether they are large industrial clients or residential customers with a few kilos of scrap metal.

“Small pieces of scrap metal add up, and it all helps the environment.”

Metal Markets and Machinery

Raw Metal Corp’s success is not just due to its customer service; it’s also about the advanced machinery and strategic logistics that keep the wheels turning.

“We’ve completed three direct ship exports from our Mackay yard with shiploads ranging from 12,000 to 17,000 tonnes of steel,” Wade explains.

“The organisation of ship loading is quite a feat, with the ever-changing timelines of ship availability, coordinating 15 trucks and bins, and managing the weather. These shiploads run for 24 hours over three to four days and require precise coordination across the business.”

The company’s investments in machinery, such as the Sennebogen machines and Caterpillar excavators, ensure that they can efficiently process both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, preventing them from ending up in landfills. This not only aligns with their environmental goals but also supports their growing business.

“We installed the only hammer mill shredder in North Queensland a couple of years ago and it is proving a game changer for metal recycling in North Queensland,” Wade added.

As well as mining, Raw Metal specialise in farm clean-ups.

“We are continually doing farm clean-ups for crop, cattle and sugar cane farmers from Grafton in Northern New South Wales to the North at Bowen and West to Charters Towers,” Wade explained.

“To be able to do the farm cleanups we need a minimum of tipper trailer loads of scrap metal to offset the machinery that we have to take to site. We take a 21-tonne excavator with a grab, semi-trailer tipper bin, and the machine has to be floated to and from the site.”

Beyond the Yard

The team at Raw Metal Corp isn’t just about business; they bring a wealth of personal experience and dedication to their roles with an emphasis on giving team members pathways for progression.

“One of my favourite moments was hiring a new staff member who had a tough start in life,” Wade shared.

“Over 3.5 years, he grew into his role, set and achieved small goals, and taught me as much as I taught him. His enthusiasm and hard work were truly inspiring.”

Beyond his professional commitments, Wade is known for his love of the great outdoors. Whether it’s fishing, camping, or simply enjoying a quiet moment by the water, he finds his peace in nature, often using these moments to recharge and stay grounded.

Brett Crosby also reflects on his 10 years with Raw Metal Corp, particularly the pride he takes in the company’s Paget yard.

“Scrap yards around the world are historically dirty and not family-friendly,” he said.

“When Todd purchased the lot in Paget, we developed it specifically for a scrap yard.

“I project-managed the construction and design, and we all pride ourselves on how clean it is.

“Everyone that comes into the yard comments on it, and I’m very proud of the team, as they treat it like it’s their own.”

Enjoying a cold beer and spending time with his family are simple pleasures in life Brett looks forward to outside of work. He spends weekends riding his cruiser and when he’s not chasing horizons in Queensland, he likes to explore other destinations across the globe.

Todd is passionate about fitness and staying active. When he’s not busy with work, you’ll likely find him hitting the gym. His dedication to health and wellness is something he takes seriously, inspiring those around him to lead an active lifestyle.

What’s Next for Raw Metal Corp?

As Raw Metal Corp continues to grow, the team remains focused on innovation and expansion.

“We have massive plans coming up in the yard at Paget and in Wacol, Brisbane,” Brett said.

“We continue to invest heavily in the business to ensure our processing and material handling is world-class. Attending metal recycling conferences around the world keeps us abreast of the constantly changing recycling technology,” Todd added.

As they continue to expand and refine their operations, one thing remains clear: Raw Metal Corp is not just a team recycling metal; they are forging a greener future for Queensland and beyond.

FROM MINE SITE TO

With Josh Clark From Earth Architectures & Performance Training Australia

After spending two and half decades in mining then transitioning into the civil world, Josh Clark at Earth Architectures and Performance Training Australia knows excavators very well.

Josh grew up in the small mining town of Moranbah in Central Queensland. His father was a coal miner, while his mother was a teacher. After working up and down the east coast in various roles, at 22 Josh decided that mining was the career path he wished to follow.

Josh began his career driving a truck and gradually moved through various roles before becoming an excavator operator. He fondly remembers the moment he realised he wanted to pursue this path. While working on a civil residential site at the age of 17 in the peak

of summer he was labouring intensely in a trench on a shovel when he looked up and saw someone sitting in an excavator, casually smoking a cigarette and blaring music. At that moment, he thought to himself, “that’s what I want to be when I grow up!”

Josh soon found out that the job of an excavator operator wasn’t quite as simple as that and he loved the challenges it brought, deciding to make it his full-time profession.

Now with two businesses, ran solely by himself Josh provides civil excavation, as well as excavator proficiency training for mining companies.

“When I look back at it now excavators have made my career,” Josh explained.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Josh worked

full-time in the mining industry, conducting specialist training for operators to enhance their production output. However, the onset of the pandemic and subsequent social distancing restrictions unfortunately interfered with his work in the mines. In response to these challenges, Josh decided to start his own business in 2019, Earth Architectures. He invested in several excavators and shifted his focus to localised civil projects. This new business now handles various tasks, including residential and industrial development, stone and rock wall construction, landscaping, bridge abutments, road building, creek crossings, and pipeline projects.

Since restrictions have lifted Josh now conducts periodical training in the mines again. Josh personalises this training depending on

TO BUILDING SITE

the workforce and its size. How many crew members and machines will usually determine how long he spends on your site, but typically he will spend two to four months giving specialised and seamless training.

Josh prides himself on his ability to greatly increase the client’s production output through small technique adjustments to operators alongside ensuring their upmost safety. “It’s actually quite simple, refine movements and stop doing the things you don’t need to do,” and he teaches his streamlined approach with operators in excavators of up to 700-tonne machines, which are very big and slow compared to the smaller machines he uses in his civil jobs.

Josh differentiated between his civil work and

training work in the mines:

“With the smaller machines in the civil world, you can do a lot of different things quicker, but when you get a 700-tonne machine, they’re very big and very slow, so trying to do the same manoeuvres is quite costly, so it’s about reducing the things you don’t need to do.”

“Companies can spend up to $20 million on a machine, so if they aren’t getting the production required, I can teach long term improvement techniques to operators to ensure they do.”

“Small technique adjustments can produce huge gains.”

“The metrics involved and the dollar value attached to those metrics are mind blowing.”

On the other hand, for Josh’s civil work, he

uses a 20-tonne excavator, a 5-tonne excavator, a truck and a bobcat, which are ideal for the smaller-scale projects he handles at Earth Architectures.

Josh’s expertise and longevity of career is what sets him apart from the rest. Not only has Josh been in the excavation game for 27 years, but his profession has also taken him to interesting places all over Australia, New Zealand and Africa, such as Guinea where he worked on the World’s Biggest Iron Ore project training nationals.

Whether you require training for your staff in the mines, or smaller-scale civil excavation projects, Josh has a world of experience to offer and is passionate about helping newer to industry operators learn decades of experience.

Sam Dunbar is a man who values his time both on and off the clock. When he’s not busy managing his electrical business, which he founded in 2020 after starting his apprenticeship in 2009, you might find him indulging in a round of golf or working on his property. However, the role he cherishes most is that of a father and a partner.

Sam is engaged to his “gorgeous” fiancé, Angela, and together they are raising three daughters: Dempsey, Eloise, and Bronte. Their family is rounded out by their three fur babies, a collection of goats, and plenty of chickens, all contributing to the bustling household.

Balancing the demands of running a business and being a present father to three young girls is, according to Sam, his greatest challenge yet. Despite the busyness of life, Sam maintains a positive outlook, describing himself as a chatterbox, hard-working, and a comedian. These three words capture the essence of a man who is not only dedicated to his work but also knows how to keep the mood light and enjoy the moments that matter most.

In a life full of activity and responsibility, Sam Dunbar finds joy and fulfilment in the love of his family and the satisfaction of a job well done.

THE IMPACT OF STRESS ON YOUR SKIN AND HOW TO COMBAT IT

Stress doesn’t just affect your mind; it leaves visible marks on your skin too. From breakouts to dullness, the toll of stress can be quite evident. But don’t worry—there are effective ways to manage stress and keep your skin looking its best.

When you're stressed, your body can release cortisol, a hormone that can trigger inflammation and increase oil production. This often leads to acne, eczema flare-ups, or premature ageing. So, tackling stress is crucial for maintaining healthy skin.

Here are five top tips for reducing stress and improving your skin health.

Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Incorporate mindfulness practices like meditation or deep

breathing exercises into your daily routine. Just a few minutes a day can help lower cortisol levels and reduce stress.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity is a fantastic stress-buster. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a high-intensity workout, exercise releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day.

Connect with Loved Ones: Social connections are vital for stress relief. Spend time with family and friends, or engage in activities that foster a sense of community. Talking about your stressors with a trusted person can provide emotional support and practical advice.

Prioritise Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for stress management and overall well-being. Establish a regular sleep routine, aiming for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night. Create a relaxing bedtime ritual to help you unwind.

Engage in Hobbies: Make time for activities you enjoy, whether it’s reading, painting, gardening, or cooking. Hobbies provide a creative outlet and a mental break from daily stressors.

By incorporating these stress-reducing techniques into your life, you’re not only enhancing your mental well-being but also supporting your skin’s health. Managing stress effectively is key to a more radiant, resilient you.

Why Natural Ingredients Are Taking Over

In recent years, the beauty industry has experienced a seismic shift towards products that are not only effective but also clean and green. The phrase "clean beauty" has become a buzzword in the skincare aisles, but what does it really mean? At its core, clean beauty is all about using products formulated with natural, non-toxic ingredients that are as kind to the environment as they are to your skin. But why is this trend gaining so much momentum?

Today’s consumers are more informed than ever before. Gone are the days when we blindly trusted whatever was on the label. With the rise of social media and an increasing number of documentaries shedding light on the potentially harmful chemicals lurking in our beauty products, people are now taking a more discerning approach.

The demand for transparency has never been higher, and beauty brands are responding by simplifying their ingredient lists and shouting their clean

credentials from the rooftops.

But it’s not just about avoiding the nasties; it’s about embracing the good stuff too. Natural ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and shea butter have long been celebrated for their skinloving properties. These powerhouse ingredients are making a comeback, not just because they’re effective, but because they carry the kind of wholesome, back-to-nature appeal that resonates with the modern consumer. After all, who wouldn’t prefer a touch of honey over a dash of parabens?

The clean beauty movement isn’t just a trend—it’s a reflection of broader societal changes. As more people become environmentally conscious, they’re looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, even in their beauty routines. This has led to a surge in the popularity of eco-friendly packaging, cruelty-free products, and sustainable sourcing. Brands that align with these values are not only gaining customers but also earning their loyalty.

Of course, let’s not forget the elephant in the

room—or rather, the chemicals in the bottle. Many traditional beauty products are packed with synthetic ingredients that can be irritating, especially for those with sensitive skin. Clean beauty products, on the other hand, tend to focus on gentle, soothing ingredients that nourish the skin without causing a fuss.

It’s like the difference between a fast-food meal and a home-cooked dinner: one might satisfy you in the short term, but the other nourishes you in the long run.

The rise of clean beauty is a testament to the fact that consumers are no longer just interested in looking good—they want to feel good too. And what’s better than pampering your skin with products that are as pure as your intentions?

The next time you’re perusing the beauty shelves, remember: if it’s clean, it’s likely to be seen as a cut above the rest. After all, in the world of beauty, going green is the new black!

Arj Barker

American-born Australian-favourite Arj Barker is touring Australia to perform ‘The Mind Field’.

In ‘The Mind Field’ Arj will have audiences laughing in their seat whilst also walking away thinking about life differently.

We spoke to Arj ahead of his performance and he said the show was born from the idea that “everything is a giant mind field.”

“There are some people that think consciousness is the source of everything, as opposed to matter. It's a big argument and in established science, most people assume it is matter, and everything springs from matter. However, there are really smart people that consider the possibility that consciousness is fundamental, and matter emerges from consciousness, which sounds kind of crazy.”

In the show Arj explains this concept in a concise and easy to follow way. He understands that someone reading this article may not believe this content has the makings of a great comedy show, but he encourages everyone to come along

has it all, including live music from legends like Sandi Thorn, with her hit single ‘I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker.’ The line-up continues to impress with the addition of Rose Tattoo, Southern Sons and Reece Mastin. They join a stellar array of artists including Sweet (UK), Pseudo Echo, Jebediah, Thirsty Merc, Christine Anu, Ash Grunwald, 19 Twenty, and Bondi Cigars.

The festival is expected to be jampacked with attendees from every corner of the country and stands as a celebratory treat lighting up the live music scene across the nation.

Get ready for the ultimate festival experience at the ABFOM, which has a diverse range of ticket options. Grab yourself a day pass to enjoy the highlights of the festival or immerse yourself in the music with the 3-day pass, which also provides access to all venues throughout the event.

If an elevated experience is what you are looking for, the festival also has VIP tickets, which give you exclusive perks including priority entry, VIP lounge access and opportunities to meet your favourite artists.

Are you worried about getting around? Worry no more, as ABFoM has some fantastic transport options for you. Festival ticket buyers with a wristband can hop on and off any Whitsunday Transit bus during the festival. There will also be an additional shuttle service that will run between the Sailing Club, Airlie Main Street venues and the festival’s accommodation partners.

What: Airlie Beach Festival of Music.

Where: Whitsunday Sailing Club, Airlie Beach. When: November 8th to 10th 2024.

and be proven wrong.

“I've always made that number one priority; for my shows to be funny, and number two is making people think about some interesting things that I find fascinating. Everything leads to a punchline in my show.”

Arj explained that there are some interesting topics covered in the show and one is that people assume you see with your eyes, but actually we see the world with our brain.

The brain constructs the image of the world that we see. Our eyes measure light waves, they provide the brain with that information and the brain builds the image that we see.

Although Arj discusses serious topics, he said the entire show is not filled with intense material, there are other aspects that include his dogs, his love for coffee, and a whole section dedicated to farts!
