Hello Everyone,
I’m excited to share some big news — Core Life and Tripping Magazine are expanding to Townsville!
After nearly 15 years of publishing magazines in the Mackay and Whitsunday region, we ventured into weekly newspapers five years ago — right when regional papers were disappearing. Our mission was clear: to revive a strong, local voice in print and reconnect communities once anchored by their local news. From that vision, Mackay and Whitsunday Life was born — and in 2024, it was named Best Free Newspaper in Queensland.
Our momentum quickly grew. Within a year of opening our first paper, we were invited to launch a second newspaper in the Burdekin. Another year later, the Mayor of Hinchinbrook personally called and invited us to do the same in his community. It’s been an incredible journey — and today, we’re proud to deliver four free weekly newspapers to our

regional communities.
As our newspaper footprint grew, it made perfect sense to bring Core Life and Tripping Magazine along for the ride. Tripping had already gained a strong following across the Townsville region, stocked at major tourist destinations. Meanwhile, Core Life—though included—was more of a bonus read than a headline publication.
But that’s about to change.
Over the past year, we’ve been gradually introducing Core Life and Tripping to the Hinchinbrook and Burdekin regions — and you’ll notice plenty of local stories in this issue. With Townsville perfectly positioned between the two, we knew it was time to extend the love and offer Townsville a bold new voice in print as well.
We can’t wait to connect with the local business community and share the incredible stories happening in your backyard. If you’d like to work with us, partner, or simply say hi — please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d truly love to hear from you.

his first-ever triathlon. Since his debut event in 2017 on Hamilton Island, he has become a local legend, competing in the World Ironman Championships twice, the World Half Ironman Championships three times, and other World Triathlon events. He’s also become President of the Whitsunday Triathlon Club and Event Director of the Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival.
Michael and his wife Val moved to Airlie Beach from Melbourne in 2016 to escape the chilly, wet winters and trade them for glorious blue skies and stunning scenery.
Desiring a challenge and after chatting with a friend, Michael was introduced to the Airlie Beach Parkrun, a five-kilometre run starting at Coral Sea Marina and along the boardwalk.
Michael recalls saying, “Five kilometres! That will kill me, mate! I’m lucky to run across the road.”
But after six months of training and a few inju-
“I should cross-train with something else.” A former surfer, Michael already had strong swimming skills. He picked up a pushbike, and soon he was training across all three disciplines. None of this came easily. At 23, Michael was commuting home from his desk job in the city Melbourne when he was involved in a serious motorbike accident. He suffered permanent nerve damage to his left leg (requiring skin grafts) and lost a large portion of his left calf muscle. He also developed kidney failure and spent six weeks on dialysis. Left with broken bones and severe nerve damage, he had to learn to walk again. He spent over six months in hospital and rehabilitation.
In November 2017, the Hamilton Island Triathlon was coming up. Now experienced in swimming, cycling and running, Michael signed up. The course may have been short, but its steep hills made it brutal. From that moment on, he was hooked. The following year, he completed Olym-
in Mackay, Townsville, and Melbourne.
An Olympic distance triathlon includes a 1.5-kilometre swim, 40-kilometre bike ride and a 10-kilometre run.
In 2019, his next challenge came calling: his first half Ironman. He completed the 1.9-kilometre swim, 90-kilometre cycle and 21.1-kilometre run, having trained for most of 2017 and all of 2018. Just months later, he competed again in Cairns, this time winning his age group (65-69) and earning a spot at the 2019 World Championships in Nice, France.
In 2021, he stepped up to the ultimate endurance test: the full Ironman, comprising a 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-kilometre ride and 42.2-kilometre marathon. Over the next few years, he completed six Ironmans, including events in Cairns, South Africa and Kona, Hawaii. His
performance in South Africa in 2025 qualified him for the prestigious Ironman World Championships in Nice, France, this September.
Michael Kimpton’s personal achievements are exceptional, but what he’s done for the Airlie Beach community is even more far-reaching.
In 2022, he was appointed President of the Whitsunday Triathlon Club. That same year, the future of the Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival was in doubt, but Michael and Val saved it from dying. Since then, the festival has grown into a thriving Event and one of the most unique and popular triathlons on Australia’s sporting calendar. Looking ahead to September, Michael is proud and excited to have been invited to the Ironman World Championship in Nice, France.
Michael Kimpton turned a five-kilometre parkrun into a passport to the world’s toughest races.

BLOOD, GRIT AND THE WILL TO LIVE
Dane Campbell On The Day Everything Changed
Dane Campbell has never been one to back down from a challenge. A former rugby league player and now the North Queensland Cowboys’ Head of Recruitment, Dane has faced many battles on the field, but none quite like the one he’s tackling now: stage four bowel cancer.
Fit, active and only 42, Dane said the diagnosis came out of nowhere.
“I felt a sudden urge to go to the bathroom and thought I just had an upset stomach,” he recalled.
“But I randomly happened to look down and it was all blood. That was a massive concern –so unusual – especially given I’d had no other symptoms and was feeling otherwise fit and healthy.”
What could have been brushed off as something minor — as his GP initially suspected haemorrhoids — turned out to be far more serious. Fortunately, that same GP chose to err on the side of caution, referring Dane for a colonoscopy that ultimately changed the course of his life.
“I came out of the colonoscopy and was asked to stick around – that’s when I started to realise something was wrong,” Dane said.
“I was told that I had a cancer in my rectum –the news smashed me in the face pretty hard.”
Dane underwent minimally invasive robotic surgery at Mater Private Hospital
Townsville, led by colorectal surgeon Associate Professor Shin Sakata, who performed an ultra-low anterior resection using cutting-edge
technology.
“The location of the cancer meant that the entire rectum had to be removed and, traditionally, that would require patients to have a large incision and a temporary stoma bag,” Prof Sakata explained.
“In Dane’s case, I used the DaVinci Xi robot, a great example of the state-of-the-art surgical technology we have at Mater Private Hospital Townsville. The operation was smooth sailing, and I was able to avoid giving Dane a stoma bag.”
However, Dane’s cancer journey didn’t end there. Follow-up scans revealed a suspicious spot on his liver. What followed was a liver lobectomy and six months of chemotherapy. It confirmed the cancer had reached stage four.

“So, that means I have stage four cancer, but we’re having a red-hot crack at eliminating it,” Dane said.
“At the end of the day, I was fortunate I just happened to look down that day. If I hadn’t –or if I had and dismissed it as haemorrhoids or fissures – the outcome could have been incredibly different.”
Prof Sakata emphasised the importance of early detection and integrated care.
“At Mater Private Hospital Townsville, the close collaboration of colorectal surgeons, liver surgeons, gastroenterologists and oncologists produces patient care of the highest standard,” he said.
“At Mater Private Townsville, the needs of our patients always come first.”
His message is timely.
Around 15,000 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year, and more than 5,000 die from the disease, making it the nation’s seconddeadliest cancer. Australia also has the highest rate of bowel cancer in the world in people under 50, with one in nine cases now occurring in younger adults.
Prof Sakata is urging the public not to be complacent.
“We are seeing a recent rise in bowel cancer cases among young people like Dane,” he said.
Red flags include a change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, fatigue and, as in Dane’s case, blood in the stool.
“In hindsight, I probably had some discomfort in my abdomen and what I thought was reflux,
which I put down to other sickness at the time, when really, it was the cancer,” Dane admitted.
“So, I’d really advocate for early checks and screening, even if you think it’s not necessary.
“I also hadn’t realised at the time, but after being diagnosed, I did a deep dive into my family history and found we have six or seven generations deep of stomach-related cancers, so it’s worth knowing your family history too.”
Now well into treatment, the former footy player is focusing on optimism and health, and living life with even more purpose.
“I joke about it, but the reality is that all the things you know to be true – like eating well, exercising regularly, mindfulness – I think all of those things I’m doing more habitually and as a result I have a pretty positive outlook on beating this,” Dane said.

AUSTRALIA’S INDUSTRIAL FUTURE HAS A NEW VOICE ANDREW WILLCOX MP
In a time when global supply chains wobble and energy debates rage louder than ever, one of Canberra’s rising regional voices is helping shape the blueprint for Australia’s industrial backbone — and he’s doing it with the grounded pragmatism of someone who prefers welders and workshop floors to whiteboards and buzzwords.
From exploring advanced manufacturing hubs in Paget to backing sovereign rocket launches in Bowen, the Federal Member for Dawson is stepping into a national spotlight with two heavyweight roles: Shadow Assistant Minister for Manufacturing and Sovereign Capabilities, and now a key appointment to the Coalition’s Energy Policy Development Group.
Andrew Willcox is using his new portfolio to champion both national resilience and regional industry. And while his appointment was welcomed as a political elevation, the member himself sees it as a practical opportunity to make a tangible difference.
“This isn’t just about policy on paper, it’s about getting out and listening to manufacturers and industry stakeholders across the country,” he said.
“We need to find out what their limiting factors are and develop policy that helps them grow, innovate and employ.”
For Mr Willcox, the brief goes far beyond traditional manufacturing. His portfolio intersects with critical national challenges, from fuel security to agricultural inputs, from aerospace engineering to defence applications.
“One of the most urgent things I want to tackle is fuel security,” he said.
“As a country, we should have at least a three-month supply of fuel onshore. I don’t believe we currently do. That has major implications for everything, transport, emergency response, and food supply.
“If we’re talking about sovereign capability, this has to be top of the list.”
Equally pressing is Australia’s ability to produce key agricultural inputs like fertilisers and crop protection chemicals.
“We rely heavily on overseas sources for these essentials,” he said.
“If international supply chains are disrupted, we’re in serious trouble. I want to see us develop the capacity to manufacture more of these products domestically, and not just at a pilot scale, but at commercial volumes.”
Mr Willcox is also passionate about the potential of space and precision manufacturing. His electorate includes Gilmore Space Technologies in Bowen, which (at the time of print) is preparing to launch Australia’s first locally-built orbital rocket.
“Most of the satellite components are already being made here in Australia,” he said.
“If we can manufacture more of the precision parts as well, then we control the process from the factory floor to low Earth orbit. That’s not just great for jobs, it’s essential for national security and data sovereignty.”
The overlap between space technology and defence is another area Mr Willcox intends to explore.
“We’re seeing real crossover between propulsion systems used for rockets and the kind of technology our defence forces need. Supporting these industries is not just smart, it’s strategic.”
But while his eyes are on national outcomes, his feet remain firmly planted in his electorate.
“I’m encouraging manufacturers in Dawson, from Mackay to Townsville, from Paget to Wulguru, to get in touch,” he said.
“If you’ve got an idea, a bottleneck, or a project you think could contribute to our economy or Australia’s sovereign capability, I want to hear from you.”
Mr Willcox’s influence on national policy has grown in parallel with his manufacturing brief, with a recent appointment to the Coalition’s energy policy development group marking another significant step in his federal portfolio.
“This is about developing practical, forward-thinking energy policy that supports economic growth, energy reliability, and environmental responsibility,” he said.
“We need to listen to voices from industry, agriculture, and the scientific community to ensure the path forward is balanced.”
For Mr Willcox, energy and manufacturing are deeply intertwined.
“Without reliable and affordable power, our industries suffer. That’s why I’m committed to shaping policy that strengthens our energy independence and supports sovereign production.”
This dual responsibility, championing both manufacturing and energy, places Willcox at the centre of two of the most pressing policy challenges of the next decade. It’s a role he doesn’t take lightly, but one he’s embracing with characteristic pragmatism.
“It all comes back to self-reliance,” he said.
“That’s what sovereign capability means, and that’s the future I want to help deliver.
“We’re in a complex geopolitical moment,” he added.
“We need to be able to take care of ourselves as a country, to keep the wheels turning even in uncertain times.
“Sovereign capability means being able to make what we need, when we need it, right here at home.”
And while the work is just beginning, the potential, like the rocket about to launch in his electorate, is sky high.

A MAN ON A MISSION
Ren Pedersen never planned to be involved in medicine. He never went to medical school. He never paid too much attention in science class.
But when he tragically lost his nine-year-old daughter Amy to Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) in 2009, he dove head-first into the medical world—not as a doctor, but as a father with a promise to keep.
"I promised my daughter that I would cure this,” says Ren.
“I just happened to pick the toughest fight in all of medicine.”
DIPG—also known as the deadliest childhood cancer—is an aggressive brain tumour that forms in the brainstem, affecting vital functions like breathing, movement, and heart rate. Most children diagnosed with DIPG survive only months.
No effective treatment exists. In fact, up until Amy’s death 16 years ago, no research into a cure for DIPG had ever been undertaken in Australia.
But where most saw an insurmountable challenge, Ren chose to fight tooth and nail for a cure that could save thousands.
A crane operator by trade and a Burdekin boy at heart, Ren grew up surrounded by small-town values—honesty, hard work, and doing what needed to be done. After losing Amy, those same values fuelled his leap into a world he never imagined stepping into. “I approached this with a blue-collar, crane driver’s mentality,” he says.
With an absence of fundamental DIPG research, it was up to him to get the ball rolling.
“We were really starting from scratch,” says Ren.
“They said, ‘We can’t do any research without autopsy samples.
“So the first thing I did was, with my contacts, I delicately approached the parents, and we consented to getting the children’s tumours debulked when the kids passed away.
“And so, for the first time ever in Australia, scientists had actual tumour samples to analyse.”
Thanks largely to Pedersen’s groundwork, Australia’s first DIPG tumour bank was created in 2011 at the Children’s Cancer Institute, under the leadership of Associate Professor David Ziegler.
Since then, the path has been all but linear, but made entirely possible thanks to Ren’s undying determination.
“I would literally go to the institutions and challenge the leading professors there,” says Ren.
“If the doctors said, ‘we can't do this or this’, I’d say, ‘well, what do you need to get this done?’”
Fast-forward to today, and Australian researchers have led the charge in DIPG research, with recent breakthroughs demonstrating that an accessible cure may be just over the horizon.
Despite promising updates, Ren knows the journey is far from complete.
“The next step is making sure these discoveries
actually reach the kids who need them.”
His fundraising endeavour, ‘Ren’s Million Dollar Mission’, was born from this understanding. The charity aims to raise $1 million to support vital DIPG research at the Children’s Cancer Institute, focusing on apoptosis-targeting treatments and tumour microenvironment studies to develop new therapies.
“Once we get this million dollars up, we hope to gain momentum across Australia… and get this drug delivered into the mouths of these children, because helping parents save their children is what this is all about.”
Unfortunately, Ren couldn’t quite save Amy, but the OAM recipient says the journey for a cure has kept him connected to her, helping to fill the devastating void she left behind a decade and a half ago.
“This is like my child now,” says Ren.
“(I’ve watched) it grow and mature. We’ve nursed the baby up till it's about to walk, and now it's walking. We've just got to get the treatments that we've discovered to the bedside and watch the child blossom.”
And that’s the mission. Ren’s mission. Not an obligation, but a decision—to not only uphold his promise to Amy, but to ensure that children with DIPG can grow up to decide their own destiny, too.

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE JUST ANOTHER STATISTIC
With Pastor Andy Wilson From Whitsunday Baptist Church
Are we looking at the right statistics in the right way? For decades, society has rightly fought for women’s rights. But in the process, have some men been left behind? In the 1960s and ’70s, Australia introduced no-fault divorce laws, initially to protect women— especially those abandoned by husbands. These laws allowed women to retain the family home and often full custody of the children. At the time, it was a necessary reform. But five decades on, some are asking: do these laws now unfairly disadvantage men?
Whitsunday Pastor Andy Wilson married his high school sweetheart when he was just 21 years old. The couple went on to have four children together, bought a house in Brisbane and Andy ran his own business while his wife opted to be a stay at home mother. For many years life was idyllic, but then the marriage started to become strained.
Desperate to rekindle the spark Andy tried to woo his wife again, buying her flowers, leaving little notes for her to find and reading ‘Seven Ways To Be A Hero’ about how to win your wife back. He also sold their boat to renovate the kitchen and invested time improving the house so she could be happy.
Sadly, none of his efforts worked and he was asked to move out of the family home.
Andy rented a small room nearby to stay close to the children. Without a suitable home for overnight stays, and while continuing to
financially support the family, he found himself paying over $500 per week in child support.
Meanwhile, his wife left for France on a holiday. During this time, Andy had access to the house while he was looking after the children. It was on one of these days that he saw a handwritten letter from France and curiosity got the better of him. The letter confirmed his suspicions: it was a love note to his wife.
Later that same day he looked on the family computer and discovered multiple images of his wife wearing different outfits. On each of them she had a black eye. He recalled her receiving this injury when their son accidentally swung his head into her. But here, it looked like a set-up. He realised, she was using this to try and incriminate him into a domestic violence allegation.
Andy took the hard drive and when his wife returned home she phoned him up rattled, trying to get him to admit to destroying the evidence. Andy recalls feeling like the police were listening in.
Though ultimately Andy wasn’t charged, the experience left him shaken. After speaking with a lawyer friend, Andy was told the legal battle would be lengthy and costly— his wife likely to receive up to 80% of the assets. Rather than fight, he chose to walk away and start over. Sadly, Andy’s story isn’t uncommon. Many men report losing their homes, finances, and access to their children following divorce.
While domestic violence laws are vital for protecting victims, some allege they are misused during custody disputes. Research suggests that separation and family court issues are contributing factors in male suicide. According to Dads In Distress, a national support group, separated men are six times more likely to die by suicide than their married counterparts.
Fortunately, Andy was one of the lucky ones. He may have walked away without any money, but he was able to see his children. He also met and fell in love with a beautiful woman and was able to become a caring stepfather to her two children.
Andy also discovered his true calling which is ministry – to build God’s church right here in the Whitsundays. Since December last year Andy has been the Pastor at Whitsundays Baptist Church, where his candid and uplifting sermons have grown the congregation.
His journey, however, could have ended very differently.
“I honestly believe after losing everything that without my faith in Jesus I would have been another suicide statistic,” shared Andy.
“After what happened I had every reason to hate but hate but hate locks you in a prison of bitterness. The sun will rise again - hang in there and don’t give up, because I am testament to how life does get better.”

CANVAS, SOUL AND STAGE
Matteo Charles To Headline Enchanted Garden Charity Fundraiser
World-renowned artist Matteo Charles is set to bring his unique brand of “Inspirational Artistry” to the Whitsundays this October, headlining the Life Publishing Charity Event, The Enchanted Garden at Elementa on October 25.
For an event already rich with wonder, Charles’ live performance art promises to be a centrepiece — quite literally — as the Sydneyborn creative prepares to paint before a live audience under the stars.
Best known for his explosive stage portraits of A-list celebrities and global figures, Matteo has painted everything from Hollywood royalty to world leaders. But his art is about far more than likeness — it’s about story.
“Each painting I produce has a piece of my heart and soul that leaves with it,” Matteo says.
“I’m connected to each canvas in a different way during creation. It’s like a child leaving home — and at the same time it lights me up knowing that piece will hang proudly in someone’s home or office somewhere in the world.”
This connection — to the canvas, to people, to the moment — is what makes his work so compelling. Diagnosed with a chronic illness at a young age, Matteo turned inward and upward, drawing strength through martial arts and expressing pain through art, music and writing. His performances have since become part theatre, part therapy — deeply moving, undeniably powerful, and joyously unpredictable.
“There’s definitely a system and signature style I’ve created,” he explains of his live painting.
“But I allow the creativity of the moment to flow. You never quite know what will happen. You might just have to purchase a ticket and come see for yourself.”
That spontaneity has made him a favourite with audiences from Sydney to the USA. But despite global travels — including
Hong Kong — the Whitsundays has remained on his bucket list.
“I’ve always wanted to visit,” he says.
“I’m excited to touch down and see what art will reveal itself to me… and also work on my tan.”
As part of the charity event, Charles will also debut a brand-new digital artwork — a specially commissioned piece with limited-edition prints available exclusively at The Enchanted Garden.
“It will be super exclusive, super limited,
A-lister screaming from backstage: “Make sure you make me look skinny!” Unfazed, Matteo finished the piece and had a happy celebrity by the end.
While one of Matteo’s greatest aspirations is to see his portrait of Jesus hanging in the Vatican, showcasing his work in the Whitsundays feels like a heavenly chapter in that journey.
With only one performance planned for the evening, this is a rare chance for guests to witness a master at work, blending movement,
A LEGACY OF PURPOSE AND PLAY
M&P Services – Key Solutions Group Charity Golf Day Tees Off A Decade Of Giving
There are golf days — and then there is the golf day.
Now in its 10th year, the M&P Services–Key Solutions Group Charity Golf Day has carved out a singular place in Queensland’s philanthropic landscape, becoming a flagship event where community spirit and generosity meet the green in full swing.
This annual affair, held at the Mackay Golf Club, has grown from a modest charity event into the largest fundraiser of its kind in Central and North Queensland. And at the heart of it all is a man whose passion for golf is only rivalled by his commitment to his community — Max Lamb Jr.
What began as a creative response to economic hardship has evolved into an enduring tradition.
“The annual golf day was born in the downturn,” Max reflects.
“Businesses were really feeling the pinch in 2012 and 2013, and by 2015, charities were truly suffering.”
It was then that Max — Director of M&P Services and an avid golfer —
recognised that while his usual supplier events were losing momentum, there was an opportunity to transform a beloved pastime into something far more impactful.
“I thought of a golf day, which linked a personal passion of mine with something I could make truly special,” he explains.
Special is an understatement. In its inaugural year, the event raised a respectable $6,000. By year nine, that figure had skyrocketed to over $61,000. This year, organisers are aiming to surpass $75,000 — a milestone that would push the total funds raised across a decade to more than $350,000.
And true to its guiding motto, “the funds stay local,” every cent supports grassroots charities doing essential work across the Mackay region.
What makes this event so magnetic isn’t just the cause — it’s the culture. From team prizes and a memorabilia auction to a high-energy raffle brimming with luxe prizes (a cyclone-rated modular “Club House” complete with a Smart TV and fridge, anyone?), the day strikes the perfect balance
between purpose and play. There’s even a quirky lineup of charity challenges — “Hit and Hope,” “Putt for Dough,” and the fan-favourite “Dry Village” hole, where pledges go toward tents for Mackay’s homeless community through Chances House.
And while networking among business leaders remains a core feature, this is not a boys’ club. The event draws an increasingly diverse crowd, including many all-female teams that are just as competitive on the course — and arguably, even more stylish.
“It’s a day for everyone,” Max notes.
“There’s nothing better than seeing a workplace group of women out there on the green, showing the blokes how it’s done.”
For Max, the event’s success is also a testament to the power of partnerships.
“We couldn’t do this without the incredible support of our sponsors and enthusiastic participants,” he says.
“I want to specifically thank Frank Attard from Key Solutions Group, our joint naming rights sponsor, along with all our major and minor sponsors. Their commitment is what allows us to ensure that 100 per cent of the funds raised go directly to those in need in our region.”
With all player spots and sponsorships already sold out for 2025, demand for the event has never been stronger.
“We continue to look at ways to include more participants each year,” Max adds.
It’s rare to find an event that marries fun, philanthropy, and inclusivity quite so seamlessly — rarer still to find one that does it for ten years straight.
As this milestone year tees off, one thing is clear: whether you’re here for the birdies or just to avoid the bunkers, every swing is helping build something far more meaningful than a scorecard.
After all, in Max Lamb Jr’s world, a golf day isn’t just a round — it’s a rallying cry for community, compassion, and doing good in style.

In 2025, St Catherine’s Catholic College celebrates a remarkable milestone—100 years of Catholic education in Proserpine. Founded in 1925 as ‘Our Lady’s Convent School,’ it began as a modest timber classroom beside the Convent on Marathon Street, welcoming 60 students under the care of four devoted Sisters of Mercy. Life was simple—electricity wasn’t connected until the 1930s, and students played marbles, hopscotch, and built cubby houses in the grass.
Through storms and triumphs, the school steadily grew. A brick building replaced the original in 1961, and by the 1980s and ’90s, new facilities such as libraries, shelter sheds, and a school bus signalled a vibrant, expanding community. The transition from religious to lay staff began in 1962 and was
completed by 1988, marking a new era while holding fast to the school’s founding values.
A new chapter began in 2012 with the opening of the Renwick Road campus, followed by the introduction of secondary education in 2013. By 2017, the College proudly celebrated its first Year 12 graduating class and welcomed kindergarten students, completing its evolution into a Prep to Year 12 college.
Today, St Catherine’s is home to 728 students, still guided by the Mercy tradition of faith, hope and love. As it honours the past and looks to the future, the heart of St Catherine’s remains unchanged—a community where every student is nurtured, valued, and inspired to flourish.
In Years 3–6, students at St Catherine’s Catholic College continue to grow academically, personally, and emotionally in a nurturing, values-led environment. Guided by the philosophy of educating the whole child—head, heart and hands—teachers support students with care and high expectations.
Literacy and numeracy remain central, while specialist subjects such as music, visual arts, Indonesian, drama, and physical education enrich the curriculum. Early intervention programs ensure each child receives the support they need to thrive.
Technology is embedded through the 1:1 laptop program and hands-on learning in robotics and coding, helping students develop confidence and digital literacy.
Beyond the classroom, students embrace leadership opportunities, inter-school sport, arts and literacy festivals, and social justice projects. Camps, retreats, and homework support further enhance the experience.
With a focus on excellence and a caring culture, St Catherine’s prepares students to become capable, confident learners, ready to embrace the challenges of secondary school.
At St Catherine’s Catholic College, students from Prep to Year 12 are nurtured academically, spiritually, socially and emotionally in a supportive and inclusive environment. The Mercy Precinct, dedicated to Prep–Year 2, features spacious classrooms and engaging outdoor spaces that encourage creativity and exploration.
Early learning focuses on building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy through structured lessons in a warm, welcoming setting. Teachers use the Visible Learning Framework and regular diagnostic assessments to tailor learning for every child.
Technology is seamlessly integrated, with 1:1
devices and Google Apps for Education fostering collaboration and responsible digital engagement. A Chromebook program for Years 4–6 further supports independent learning.
St Catherine’s values strong family partnerships. Parents are actively involved through classroom support, assemblies, newsletters, and expert-led information sessions. Physical development is also a priority, with weekly gross motor programs complementing academic growth.
With a proud heritage rooted in the Sisters of Mercy, St Catherine’s is a place where every child is seen, heard and supported to thrive—in the classroom, on the playground, and beyond.
Secondary (Years 7–12) offers a vibrant, supportive environment where students are empowered to thrive academically, socially, and spiritually.
In Years 7–9, students explore a broad curriculum including English, Maths, Science, Humanities, and enriching electives like drama, music, media, visual arts, and digital technologies. A rotating schedule allows them to discover interests and build a diverse skill set. Meanwhile the Inclusive Education team provides personalised support for those needing additional assistance.
The innovative 9@StCaths program supports Year 9 students through themed, hands-on learning experiences. From confidence-building and
entrepreneurship to leadership and global awareness, this program bridges the juniorsenior transition with purpose.
In Years 10–12, students choose from general, applied, and VET subjects, with opportunities for work experience and school-based apprenticeships. A dedicated Careers Coordinator helps students plan pathways to university, further study, or the workforce.
Grounded in gospel values and committed to pastoral care, St Catherine’s fosters strong partnerships with families. With individualised support and diverse opportunities, students are prepared not just for academic success—but for a purposeful and fulfilling future.

BREAKING GROUND, BUILDING TRUST
With Rob Miller From Pentacon
Rob Miller, Managing Director of Pentacon, is a civil engineer by trade, but more importantly, he’s a builder of culture, community, and trust.
After moving to Mackay over a decade ago from Ireland, Rob carved out his early career working with local authorities and private clients in engineering consultancy. Whilst that gave him valuable technical expertise, he quickly realised his true passion lay in the field – the contracting side of things – where he could see results rise from the dirt and into the infrastructure that shapes communities.
“Civil contracting is where I found the energy, the challenges, and the opportunity to deliver real, tangible outcomes,” Rob explains.
“I transitioned into contracting roles and worked my way up from Project Engineer through to Operations and General Manager positions in the Bowen Basin.”
His breakthrough came in 2017 when he joined Pentacon as a Project Manager and then transitioned to Operations Manager. At that time, Pentacon was a smaller business, primarily focusing on projects in South East Queensland and Chinchilla, with a few jobs sprinkled in the Bowen Basin.
“Living here in Mackay with my wife Jaimee and our three kids, I saw a chance to reshape the business and focus it more regionally –specifically in Mackay and the Bowen Basin,” he says.
“I wanted Pentacon to be a business that was truly local: employing local people and building infrastructure that benefits our communities.” Rob’s vision took off. In 2021, he bought into the business, and within 18 months, he secured full ownership, turning the key on Pentacon’s next chapter.
Since then, the business has quadrupled in size. With over 110 staff, not including subcontractors, Pentacon now operates from two main offices — one in Mackay’s Paget industrial area and another in Brisbane — plus a presence in Gladstone.
“When I took over, Pentacon was a small civil construction company,” Rob reflects.
“Today, we deliver large-scale bulk earthworks and medium to large scale civil infrastructure projects throughout the state.
“We’ve grown from a handful of staff to a team that handles diverse projects, from bridges and roads to mining infrastructure.”
Modern Thinking, Old-School Values
Underpinning Pentacon’s growth is a set of core values Rob describes as non-negotiable.
“What drives me is a passion for building things that last…most importantly doing it safely, doing it well, and doing it with a team I
genuinely believe in,” he says.
“One of our guiding principles is transparencywhat we set out to do is what we do”.
“That’s a commitment we make to clients and one we follow through on every day.”
In an industry sometimes criticised for missed deadlines or cutting corners, Pentacon stands apart. The company has cultivated a reputation for honesty, transparency, and unmatched quality.
“We don’t just say we’ll do something…we deliver it…and that honesty and trust is what has brought us repeat clients and ongoing projects.”
The motto “Home Safe. Every Day.” isn’t just on the wall — it’s embedded in the business. Every decision is made with this core promise in mind.
“Safety isn’t a slogan. It’s the foundation of how we operate from the boardroom to the job site.”
Rooted In Community
Rob credits much of Pentacon’s success to its culture – one that feels more like family than a business.
“Our team is the heart of everything we do,” he says.
“We’re a fresh, modern company focused on quality, culture, and continual improvement. Everyone knows everyone here and the sense of community is real.”
Pentacon hosts regular Friday barbecues in Mackay and fun days for families, where the children of staff get their own branded shirts and feel part of the larger Pentacon family.
Rob and Jaimee have also supported a range of local causes:
• Bowen Basin Mining Club (QLD Mining Awards)
• Easts Tigers Rugby Union
• St.Johns Catholic Primary School
• Harps Gaelic Football Club
• Chinchila Netball
• Carlton Senior Rugby League Club
• GEA Gladstone
• Souths Sharks Cricket Club
• Mackay Mayors Charity Ball
• Children’s Hospital Foundation
• Mackay Community Foundation
• Eastern Swans Sponsorship
• Civil Contractors Federation
Growing Leaders From Within
Pentacon’s growth strategy includes a strong focus on internal development. Rob takes pride in promoting from within, nurturing staff to rise through the ranks.
“I love seeing our people grow,” he says.
“We’re bringing staff up rather than constantly hiring new leaders from outside.
“Nathan went from engineering manager to precontracts manager, and Ronan moved from project manager to operations manager…It’s been rewarding to watch them flourish.”
Unlike many firms that stick to one sector, Pentacon works across mining, civil, roads, and bridges, offering flexibility and variety to its people.
“We’ve got eggs in different baskets,” Rob says.
“Staff can switch between mine sites and local projects, which adds flexibility and keeps the work engaging.”
The Man Behind The Business
When asked about his leadership style, Rob credits his father, who ran a business while Rob was growing up, as a major influence.
“It’s kind of all I knew from a young boy to now,” he reflects.
“I also rely on an advisory board of trusted mentors who challenge and support the management team and I.”
Jaimee notes Rob’s openness, claiming that “His office door is always open – whether it’s for the cleaner or the general manager.”
“I want every staff member to feel heard, and that’s part of building trust,” Rob shares.
Outside work, Rob finds balance on his acreage in Mackay, where he spends time with Jaimee, their three kids, their dog, and a small flock of chickens.
“On weekends, it’s all about family…we’re either maintaining the lawn together or watching the kids ride bikes and swim.”
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on Pentacon’s journey from a small regional contractor to a powerhouse with an expanding footprint, Rob’s pride in his business is clear, but so is his hunger for what lies ahead.
“The future is bright,” he says with confidence.
“We’re grateful to our team, clients, and partners who’ve supported this journey, and there’s so much more to come!”
Q: Advice for the next generation?
A: Be patient, level-headed, and listen to the people around you. Don’t think you can do it alone. Set targets and be clear on your goals. Listen to all advice but always trust your gut.
Q: Hobbies or interests?
A: Most definitely golfing and fishing when I can find the time.

RAISING THE ROOF, AND THE STANDARDS
With Geiger Solutions
When it comes to plumbing, roofing and cooling in Mackay, few local businesses hit the mark like Geiger Solutions. From rooftops in the city to remote jobs in Clermont and Moranbah, this crew has built its reputation on quality, reliability and good old-fashioned grit.
“Geiger Solutions is a company I originally founded in 2014 after my grandfather retired” says CEO Brad Geiger.
“I moved overseas for before COVID struck and ended up in a 2-year lockdown in Europe, but when I returned to Australia, I saw a real demand and decided to re-open.”
What began as a response to Mackay’s need for reliable roofing quickly took off.
“The vision was to meet Mackay’s demand for roofing initially, and we were very busy, very quickly.”
Everything Under One Roof
Geiger Solutions is built differently. With fully licensed builders, plumbers, roofers, airconditioning and refrigeration mechanics all in-house, they offer everything under one roof, eliminating outsourcing dramas and handover headaches.
“We can offer every service to our community and surrounds.
“We are licensed builders, air-con and refrigeration mechanics, plumbers and roofers. Every tradesman specializes in their own division.”
That means whether it’s a leaking tap, a busted air-con, or a complete re-roof in cyclone country,
Geiger Solutions gets it done.
“Our quality of work—we have no call backs to our jobs, and our roofs don’t leak. We only have qualified people on site, and the culture in our business is customer service.”
And when it comes to that culture? It’s serious.
“Everyone that works here is invested in the business emotionally, and financially, we all work with the same urgency and pride.”
Real People, Regional Focus
They don’t just work in the regions—they live and breathe them. Geiger Solutions services Mackay, Emerald, Clermont, Moranbah, and the Bowen Basin, bringing big-city capability with small-town honesty.
“Honesty and integrity are essential to us, and regional customers demand a high level of that.
“Most of our team grew up in regional areas and understand what it takes to be a member of those communities.
“We sponsor local sports teams; we purchase our food, building materials and fuel in those local communities to support local. Every town we go to, we engage in all activities and purchase real estate to ensure we always remain a part of the community.”
And when a truck crash recently happened in Clermont, it wasn’t about business—it was about being there.
“Recently, there was a cattle truck rollover crash in Clermont near one of our sites, and the whole
team downed tools and got involved in helping free cattle from the wreckage with what tools we had available for the entire day even after emergency responders finally arrived.”
Services That Cover It All
While roofing remains core, the company’s service offering continues to grow:
• Roof Maintenance & Replacement
• Guttering Installation & Repairs
• Hot Water System Installation & Service
• Residential & Commercial Plumbing
• Emergency Plumbing Callouts
• Air Conditioning Installation & Repairs
• Refrigeration Services
• Cool Room Installations & Maintenance
From complex projects to everyday jobs, the workload is as diverse as the region they serve.
“We recently replaced a roof in Eungella that was extremely articulated, and it was a real challenge for all of us, when we finished, we quite literally celebrated the completion. Celebrating these small events belongs to our team culture.”
“Our most common jobs are roof leaks, re-roofs, plumbing emergencies (leaking taps, pipework in yards), cleaning or air-con units and refrigeration servicing/repairs.”
And there’s no cutting corners across that variety. “All of our supervising tradesmen have at least 30
years of experience in commercial, residential or industrial work.
“We have the expertise behind us to not even think about it—it has become second nature to us.”
The Team That Makes It Tick
At the heart of Geiger Solutions is a crew that feels more like family.
“Here we have myself as CEO, my brother Chris Geiger as Chief of Operation (the man on the ground), Shannon Woods in the office who is our admin manager – running day-to-day business, Stephen Wales is our coordinator for everything Plumbing, Russell Cunington as our Chief Estimator who makes sure the wheel keeps turning, and Jordan Cunington our head of Airconditioning and refrigeration.”
Brad says employing a strong administration team has been a game-changer.
“Following the return of my brother Chris to the family business to lead the troops, hiring a
competent administrator was the next game changer for my business, it gave us the ability to take the expansion to the next level.
“It felt like it escalated our capabilities 10-fold overnight.”
And when Brad steps away from the tools, it’s his family that keeps him grounded.
“I’m thankful for my beautiful wife, my son and my daughter.
She’s been my number one support through every crazy idea and ambition for more than 20 years. We are a very tight knit family. I get nothing but every support.”
Eyes On Expansion
Growth is on the horizon – and Geiger Solutions is ready for it.
“We are expanding into refrigeration and commercial building, roofing and demolition. We see the sky as the limit, and we are not waiting for anybody.”
It’s not just ambition – it’s passion.
“Working for our typically becomes a way of life for our crews. We celebrate everything together outside of work, fishing trips, golf days etc. it is a real family environment.”
“We all love what we do, and as the saying goes: ‘Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.’”
The Geiger Guarantee
At the end of the day, it’s not about slogans or sales pitches – it’s about showing up and doing the job right.
“Always be smiling, always talk straight and always guarantee your work.”
That’s the Geiger way. From the rooftops to the pipework, the cold rooms to the callouts, this is a business built on reputation, reliability, and realdeal results.
And they’re just getting started. www.geigersolutions.au

effectively and tackle challenges head-on.”

REDEFINING CANE WASTE AS WE KNOW IT
With Sky Renewables CEO and Founder, Simon Yim
For Simon Yim, SKY Renewables is much more than a passion project. It’s a mission.
Make no mistake—there’s plenty of passion involved. But for Simon, it’s not just about personal fulfilment. It’s about creating something that matters—and, in turn, transforming the lives of cane farmers across Australia.
After growing up in Hong Kong, Simon studied in Canada and the UK, qualifying as a solicitor in the late 1980s. Over the next three decades, he held senior roles across Asia in law, corporate strategy, and private equity, working on major infrastructure projects and leading mergers and acquisitions for global firms like General Electric.
But after more than 30 years of delivering results for some of the world’s leading corporations, Simon felt it was time to build something of his own.
With that, in 2018, SKY Renewables was born.
“I spent a couple of years looking around, trying to figure out the best sector and region to focus (my start-up) on—then I stumbled into the Burdekin,” says Yim. “I was introduced by a friend who said, ‘these guys are burning their cane
waste’. Coming from Asia, I knew there had to be value in it—that’s how it all started.”
SKY Renewables—the brainchild of Yim’s extensive research—represents a true trailblazer in renewable energy. Its flagship initiative, Project Lion, aims to commodify sugar cane waste that would otherwise be burned by transforming it into renewable gas and exporting it to energyhungry markets across Asia.
“On one side, you have places burning waste they think is useless. On the other side, you have countries like Japan and Singapore crying out for clean, renewable energy,” says Yim.
Yim identified the Burdekin region as the perfect launchpad of his world-first project.
“The Burdekin made the most sense,” he says. “Once we can prove it works (in the Burdekin), there’s no reason it can’t work in other cane regions like Mackay and Cairns and Bundaberg.”
Simon understands that, as with all pioneering endeavours, the path is challenging and not quite clear-cut—but that has not deterred him and his team of 10 dedicated experts on their pursuit of an unprecedented breakthrough that would
forever shift Queensland’s farming industry.
“It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon,” says Yim.
“You’ve got to spend the time and diligence on day one to figure out if this is worth doing. If you decide it is, you just keep doing it.”
“There are distractions and discouragements—If it were easy, others would have done it. But, if we are successful, we’ll be the first in the world to do it.”
With the recent backing of more than 70 per cent of Burdekin growers at a town hall meeting in May this year, SKY Renewables is building a formidable force, powering straight toward an untapped gold mine for Australian cane farmers.
The only missing piece of the puzzle is the opportunity to prove the potential.
“All we’re asking is to give us a chance. We’re not tyre-kickers. We’ve invested nearly $5 million of our own money and plenty of sweat equity. We’ve put in the time—seven years of work. So to growers, our government, and investors—give us a chance.”

REINVENTING THE LOCAL ICON
With Paul Fitzsimmons, Regional Manager Of Australian Venue Co.
When Paul stepped back into the fold at Australian Venue Co., it was a homecoming of sorts, and it just happened to coincide with one of the biggest transformations in Airlie Beach hospitality.
As the regional manager for Australian Venue Co., Paul oversees several venues in the region, but none quite like the Airlie Beach Hotel, a local landmark that has recently undergone a major transformation. Under Paul’s watch, the beloved pub has been reimagined with a $3.5 million renovation to its sports bar, tripling its capacity and creating a fresh energy that pulses through the heart of town.
“It’s the place to be,” he says.
“We’ve now added food service and dining to the Sports Bar, which wasn’t really there before.”
The Sports Bar has become a popular spot for major sporting events, regularly drawing full crowds for occasions like State of Origin, NRL, UFC, and the British and Irish Lions matches. Tripling the capacity has allowed them to accommodate the demand.
The venue’s transformation wasn’t just about expanding space; it was about embracing the spirit of the Whitsundays. With open-air dining, panoramic ocean views, and a sound system ranked among the best in Queensland, the Airlie Beach Hotel now offers an experience that rivals a meal or a drink.
Paul has had a deep and expansive career that has seen him travel the country.
He was formerly Chief Operating Officer for Morris Hospitality, was involved in the opening of Ardo Hotel in Townsville and oversaw The Ville Resort-Casino in Townsville.
Prior to this, he worked with Australian Venue Co., and now he is back. As Regional Manager he’s managing not just the hospitality side of Airlie Beach Hotel but the accommodation and the entire regional footprint that includes bottle shops, other pubs like Reef Gateway and Jubilee Tavern, and the growing corporate sales operation.
Weekdays are never routine, and that’s part of the fun.
“Every day’s different, and that’s the enjoyable part,” said Paul.
“There’s no normal day at The Pub.
“Cruise ship days are busy, and sometimes I’ll jump out, and it’s great to get back on the floor and see the people.”
The hotel is also adding vibrancy with weekly tribute acts, live music, musical bingo, poker nights and more.
“We’re bringing in more midweek options to give people more reasons to come, not just on weekends or game nights,” he says.
Looking ahead, Paul said Australian Venue Co. are looking at expanding their current 80-room hotel, launching comedy nights and continuing to invest in entertainment that keeps Airlie Beach Hotel a true destination.
Airlie Beach Hotel is a venue that caters to everyone. It’s all about elevating that experience for locals, tourists, and everyone in between, and Paul is at the heart of it. airliebeachhotel.com.au
DRIVING GROWTH, INNOVATION AND OPPORTUNITY IN THE WHITSUNDAYS
With Craig Turner, Director Commercial Businesses, Whitsunday Regional Council
Someone who knows the Whitsundays like the back of his hand is Craig Turner. With more than 30 years of experience across tourism, aviation, development, and local government, Craig has worn many hats — each one driven by the same passion: helping the region grow and flourish for generations to come.
Originally from the Sunshine Coast, Craig first discovered the Whitsundays three decades ago.
“I landed a job on Hamilton Island,” he recalls, “and from there it all just unfolded.” His journey took him from Fantasea Cruises to Tourism Whitsundays, and later to the Bowen Shire Council as Tourism Manager. He returned to Fantasea Cruises as Director of Sales and Marketing, managed the Big4 Airlie Cove Resort, and even owned several Subway and Red Rooster stores in the region.
Today, Craig is the Director of Commercial Businesses for Whitsunday Regional Council — a role that places him at the heart of shaping the region’s economic future. He oversees a diverse portfolio: Whitsunday Coast Airport, Shute Harbour Marine Terminal, Foxdale Quarry, three holiday parks, and the economic development team.
“Our focus is on creating opportunities that make a real difference,” Craig shares. “We’re not just managing assets; we’re building the foundations for a stronger, more connected Whitsundays. From the airport to our holiday parks, every project is about
supporting local jobs, attracting new investment, and enhancing the quality of life for our community.”
Under his leadership, the Whitsunday Coast Airport has just celebrated its best year on record.
“We’ve reached a new milestone with passenger numbers,” he says. “But it’s not only about how many people come through — it’s about the experience, the economic ripple effect, and what that means for local families and businesses. The airport isn’t just a gateway for tourists. It’s a lifeline supporting agriculture, mining, and helping locals stay connected to loved ones.”
Craig is equally proud of the shift in the region’s approach to economic development.
“We’re no longer waiting for opportunities to come to us,” he says. “We’re out there actively seeking them, building partnerships, and driving growth that sets us up for the future.”
Despite overseeing such a dynamic and wide-ranging portfolio, Craig is quick to acknowledge the team behind the scenes.
“I couldn’t do any of this without them,” he says. “They’re dedicated, passionate, and every one of them shows up with the Whitsundays in mind. Their commitment is what brings these projects to life.”
While it’s a big job, Craig takes it all in his stride. When asked how he keeps so many moving parts
in motion, he simply smiles and says, “I’ve always been able to juggle a few balls at once and stay focused on where each one’s going — it just comes naturally.”
When he does find time to slow down, you’ll find Craig enjoying the region he’s worked so hard to nurture — perhaps fishing, paddleboarding, or simply taking in the view from his beachfront unit at Cannonvale.
“That’s the magic of the Whitsundays,” he smiles. “There’s nowhere else quite like it.”
What keeps him going is knowing that every new idea — big or small — weaves into the region’s story.
“Something as simple as activating a Ferris wheel might seem like a small addition,” he reflects, “but it brings families together, sparks joy, and strengthens our sense of community. That’s what it’s all about.”
With two years as Director of Commercial Businesses and four years before that as Chief Operating Officer of Aviation and Tourism, Craig’s track record speaks volumes. He’s helped shape the Whitsundays not just through bold visions, but by rolling up his sleeves and delivering results that locals and visitors can see, feel, and enjoy — today and long into the future.

LIFTING LOCAL INDUSTRY, ONE CRANE AT A TIME
With Jack Loft ‘Lofty’ From Whitsunday Crane Hire
Jack ‘Lofty’ Loft is raising more than just cranes; he’s lifting the standard for reliable, community-focused heavy lifting solutions with his business, Whitsunday Crane Hire.
A local through and through, Lofty was born and bred in the Whitsundays, and after years of working away in the mining industry, he found his way back home with a dream to build something solid—and be there every night to tuck his two daughters into bed.
“My wife, Casey, and I took over the business three and a half years ago. We started with one crane, and now we have four cranes, a crane truck, scissor lifts and more,” said Lofty. Lofty’s path into crane work wasn’t straight. Originally a chippy by trade, he began dabbling in mechanical rigging and shutdowns at mine sites before transitioning into crane operations.
“About three years before we bought the business, I started stepping into cranes, just jumping in, being supervised by operators,” he added.
“You have to learn the outside work before you understand and start the inside work.
“A lot of people can get a crane ticket, but that doesn’t mean they know how to operate.”
Safety is front and centre, every crane hire from Whitsunday Crane Hire includes a qualified operator and dogman (directors/navigators).
The business has evolved to cover a wide range of sectors, supplying everything from boat masts and building materials to trusses, roofing, blocks and concrete. They also support key local industries such as tourism and infrastructure by providing lifts for culverts, buildings, and various construction needs throughout the region.
“Anything that can be lifted. We can get it done.”
Beyond Whitsunday Crane Hire, Lofty and Casey also operate a lightweight pool business, utilising their crane capabilities to deliver and install above-ground and semi-inground pools throughout the region.
Casey manages all administration and sales for the pool business and admin work for Whitsunday Crane Hire, while Lofty handles on-site inspections, logistics, operating and rigging.
Operating out of their Cannonvale yard, the business is truly a local affair. Lofty is passionate about employing skilled workers and providing consistent service that keeps people in town as happy, returning customers.
That local focus extends well beyond the job site, with Lofty and Casey proudly supporting a range of community initiatives through both businesses. They’ve backed local sporting organisations like the Brahmans, netball and motorsports clubs, as well as not-forprofits, mental health services, local festivals, and emergency services including the fire department, police and ambulance.
“When you do a good job, they want to keep coming back to you. We’re not the cheapest, but we do quality work and have built a good customer base from the work and team that we have.”
Looking ahead, Lofty’s goal is to continue growing sustainably while keeping their feet firmly on the ground—literally and figuratively. Whether it’s lifting a mast, installing a pool on a tricky block, or helping locals get the job done safely, Lofty and his team are proving that hard work, local knowledge and genuine service still go a long way in the Whitsundays.

BUILT ON TRUST, BACKED BY TEAMWORK
Reef Security Whitsundays
From humble beginnings to a leading security provider, Reef Security Whitsundays has built a strong reputation based on trust, teamwork and genuine care for both clients and crew.
The business was founded by Tom Rimene and Andrew Sheedy, who recognised a clear need for something better in the local security industry. “I saw a clear gap in the market, and I started up the business,” he says.
What began with Tom and Andrew as a solo team soon had to grow due to contract obligations. “We hired three more, and then we actually got a break from another company asking if we could supply guards and said, ‘Yes, we can.’ We had 72 hours to find 15 guards!”
Reef Security is now overseen by two owners, Tom himself and Andrew, and supports up to 65 regular staff, with numbers reaching 120 when including casual and on-call guards. The team provides security for venues, private functions, outdoor entertainment, gaming and more. “We are fitted out with four-wheel drives; we can go deep into the bush if needed. No pitch too big, no jobs too small.”
Tom says some of the most memorable moments in his career have come from proving people wrong. “The most memorable moments for me are when we can fulfill big jobs when doubted.”
While names are kept confidential, Reef Security has provided services for some very high-profile clients. “Look, I won’t mention any celebrities, obviously, because of privacy and confidentiality, but we’ve worked for some very big names from the States.”
“We’ve done security on Daydream Island for Jimmy Barnes and Diesel, for example.”
Andrew is a qualified trainer and assessor, which allows the business to offer in-house certification. “We can actually put people through their first aid licenses, as well as their security licenses,” Tom explained.
When asked what makes his team different, Tom says, “We work as a brother-sisterhood. We don’t work individually. We work as a big team… we’re all family.”
On the topic of conflict resolution, Tom explains, “Protocols that we have to take... obviously
you’ve got to talk to people nicely. If that doesn’t work, then you call for backup… everything just refers to QPS.”
Technology also sets Reef Security apart. “We’re the only company in the area that uses QR codes for digital reporting and rostering etc.”
“Companies can also access their own portal through this, so they can see their day-to-day guards on a regular basis.”
And why should people book with Reef Security? “We’re an honest company. We’re compliant. The communication is obviously the best all-around and we are reliable.”
At the end of the day, Tom says it best: “Security… it’s not about being big, buff, muscly, or strong. It is about being welcoming. Greeting people is an important one. That’s part of the full training that we do. Customer service is huge for us.”

COMMUNITY AT THE CORE
WITH RICH BATES, OWNER OF NEWS WHITSUNDAY
IFn the heart of Cannonvale, one business owner is proving that good old-fashioned community spirit is still a powerful recipe for success.
When Rich Bates took over News Whitsunday as part of his retirement plan, slowing down was the last thing on his mind. Instead, he transformed the newsagency into a thriving hub— where laughs are shared, names are known, and locals feel at home.
Rich’s career has been as colourful as it is impressive. He began as the youngest wildlife ranger on Phillip Island, reporting directly to the Minister for Tourism. Later, he moved into corporate leadership, expanding Apple’s Queensland operations from one to three stores, and managing multiple Specsavers locations.
But when it came time for a sea change, the Whitsundays were an easy choice. With family ties and fond boating memories, Cannonvale called him back—and News Whitsunday gave him the local connection he craved.
“It’s a locally driven business, and I wanted to stay local,” Rich says.
“Between lotto tickets, newspapers, magazines, and gifts—I knew I’d get to meet people quickly.”
He wasn’t wrong. Today, the store draws visitors from as far as Bloomsbury and has grown from supporting three regional schools with back-to-school orders to eight.
But it’s the vibrant culture he’s fostered that sets the business apart.
“We’re called ‘Scallywag Lane’ by locals,” he laughs. “We do AFL dressups when our teams lose a bet. Everyone wants to be here!”
Beyond the counter, Rich serves as a Justice of the Peace, adding another layer of community support.
Though the Whitsundays began as a retirement dream, Rich’s newsagency has become something more—a local cornerstone built on connection, humour, and heart.
“Out of the six thousand locals that live here, I think I could name four and a half thousand,” he says proudly.
“It’s always been about locals supporting locals. If we don’t look after each other, we’ll never survive.”
rom sugar mills and ports to draglines, shovels, and CHPP shutdowns, Boremetrics Maintenance & Engineering is fast becoming a name synonymous with quality, speed, and reliability in Queensland’s industrial sector.
Based in Mackay and proudly owned and operated by Luke Temple, Boremetrics has grown into a 30-strong permanent team, with a wider pool of 50-plus professionals deployed during peak shutdown periods.
“We’re a medium-sized company focused on mining and agricultural industries – we work on everything from sugar mills to heavy industrial,” Luke says.
“We’ve built our name on quality workmanship, quick turnarounds, and having the right people on the job.”
Boremetrics delivers mechanical fitting, boilermaking, and trade support across fixed plant, hydraulic systems, conveyors, pumps, and ports. Their niche lies in supplying skilled mechanical fitters and turners with strong hydraulic backgrounds to industries including ports, sugar, coal, and even gold.
“We’re big on quality, and I believe what sets us apart is not just supplying 100 people, but supplying the right people –people who care about their work, want to do it safely, and look out for each other.”
One standout service is their OEMcompatible pump rebuilds, which use
high-spec components designed for durability, delivering improved reliability without aftermarket compromise.
“We’re seeing better reliability because we don’t use aftermarket parts – we use gear that’s made properly, and made to last.”
Luke entered the industry in 2018 as a solo contractor in WA, but it was during his return home amid COVID that the vision for a larger business took shape. The company officially launched in 2022, quickly gaining momentum as a growing team operation.
“It was tough at the start, but I stayed passionate and persistent,” he says.
“I think small companies have an advantage… we can mobilise fast and do the job right.”
Together with wife Annalise, who supports operations and logistics, the business remains grounded in values.
With expansion underway in Townsville and larger workshops on the horizon, Boremetrics continues to scale with purpose.
“It’s about saying what you’re going to do, and doing it. To under-promise and over-deliver every time, is something we strive for.”
Ready to experience quality service? Contact Boremetrics today and let them drive your success with precision and reliability.

Leads Chemical Safety Innovation From Mackay YOUNG ACHIEVER NOMINEE
Wa game-changing initiative transforming chemical safety practices across the country.
Tristan Turnbull, a 23-year-old Mackay-based rising star, has been named a finalist for the 2025 Channel 7 Young Achiever Awards for his pioneering work in hazardous chemical management. With a sharp focus on compliance, safety, and digital transformation, he has become one of the go-to experts in the mining and construction sectors for chemical handling, storage, and register systems.
His success comes after just three years of involvement in the family business, ALT Industries—initially brought on board to assist with weekend data entry tasks. However, his natural aptitude for technology and problemsolving quickly led him to develop streamlined systems now used by major national chemical management firms.
“I’ve pretty much used computers all my life. I used them a lot in my previous job too, so doing this kind of work just made sense, and I enjoy doing it,” Tristan said.
His father, John Turnbull, Assessor Area Manager of ALT Industries, said, “He’s always been someone
takes something and tries to make it better.
“We’re very proud, and he should be incredibly proud of the work he’s achieved.”
These innovations, including a custom-built app designed to replace outdated spreadsheets, have revolutionised how companies manage Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventories. Through a 12-month traineeship and extensive qualifications in hazardous material handling, Tristan quickly expanded his skill set.
His hands-on approach is centred on support, not audits. Rather than conducting formal inspections like a typical auditor, Tristan focuses on providing practical, on-the-ground assistance. He offers gap analyses, on-site education, and easy-to-use tools that empower staff and simplify compliance, making it easier for businesses to meet safety and regulatory standards without feeling overwhelmed.
As a consultant, Tristan is known for his dedication and reliability, often regarded by clients as an extension of their own teams. In an industry where safety managers juggle multiple roles, having someone who can provide consistent, expert support has proven invaluable – particularly
throughout regional Queensland.
Based in Mackay, Tristan’s work is placing regional Queensland on the map for innovation. His recognition as a Young Achiever highlights the high-calibre talent emerging from North Queensland and the significance of homegrown solutions in industries that typically look externally for expertise.
One of his most impressive accomplishments is the continual refinement of his custom chemical management app. Over the past three years, Tristan has revised the app multiple times to ensure it meets evolving industry regulations and the specific needs of each client.
His attention to detail and adaptability have set him apart, catching the eye of international firms. Discussions are now underway to expand his services globally.
Now a finalist for the 2025 Channel 7 Young Achiever Awards, Tristan is also in the running for the People’s Choice Award – an opportunity for the public to support and recognise the incredible work he is doing right here in the region.

UNLOCKING ANCIENT WISDOM: BEYOND THE NEEDLE
In a world increasingly looking for holistic approaches to well-being, the ancient art of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) continues to prickle the interest of many. And at the forefront of this resurgence, bringing a healthy dose of straight talk and remarkable results to Queensland, is Dr. Scott Martin. Far from your average practitioner, Dr. Martin blends deep expertise with a refreshingly candid approach, ensuring that when it comes to your health, he gets “To The Point.”
Dr. Martin’s journey into TCM is as captivating as it is dedicated. Twenty-five years into what he anticipates will be a fifty-year career, his path began under the tutelage of a legendary Sydney master. What started as university basics blossomed into an obsession, leading him to uncover the “secret style” of Master Tung’s acupuncture, a lineage he now continues through training with five direct descendants of the style. This rigorous pursuit culminated in his Master’s degrees in both Acupuncture and TCM in 2011 from the University of Western Sydney. His early
manual, “Gone in 60 seconds,” even became a practitioner’s bible, embodying his core philosophy: “Make a person pain free by the end of the appointment, and you will have a client.”
While acupuncture might seem like a “magic trick” to first-timers, Dr. Martin assures it’s simply “real acupuncture,” an ancient art directing the body’s own healing mechanisms. He jovially quips to clients, “Make hand hurt, rest of body feel better,” acknowledging the initial bewilderment before the undeniable relief sets in. Beyond the needles, Dr. Martin’s true ardour lies in Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM). A selfconfessed “herb nerd,” he once painstakingly rewrote the two bibles of Chinese herbal medicine the Materia Medica and Formulas & Strategies into his computer, a feat that left the original author, Dan Bensky, “in disbelief.” This dedication ensures he sources “AAA rated quality Chinese medicinal plants products, the best quality the world has to offer,” blending them into custom concoctions for his clients.
Scott Martin
Dr. Martin is also keen to bust pervasive myths, particularly around the safety of Chinese herbs. “In the last 50 years ZERO people have died in Australia using Chinese Medicine! Same in the USA, same in the UK. Google it,” he states unequivocally, challenging the “dodgy, unsafe” perception. He also points to the burgeoning scientific validation, with “3000 studies... published in the last 7 years for Chinese Medicine just for Integrative Cancer care.” His own credentials include being one of only 700 people globally qualified in the post-graduate course of Integrated Oncology by the TCM Academy.
Operating from established clinics in Mackay, Proserpine, and Cannonvale, Dr. Martin’s commitment to his calling is evident. His direct communication style, peppered with the occasional expletive - he claims “people who use swear words are more likely to tell you the truth”fosters a refreshing honesty.

SIXTY YEARS OF STRONG VALUES & COMMUNITY HEART
Nutrien Harcourts McCathies, Ayr
Six decades of rich foundational history, strong values, and success will see Nutrien Harcourts McCathies in Ayr celebrate a momentous, 60th anniversary this year.
Founded in 1965 by Jack and Milly McCathie, Nutrien Harcourts McCathies, formally McCathies Real Estate, has seen waves of change, innovation and modernisation, yet continues to operate with the same values set by the pair all those years ago. Jack and Milly were a busy entrepreneurial couple, establishing businesses across the district specialising in transportation, retail, and of course, real estate.
As the years progressed, the business moved premisses from 132 Queen Street to 131 Queen Street to where it stands today at 262 Queen Street in Ayr and was passed exclusively through the McCathie family for 49 years before Paula and John Mottin joined as partners in 2014. Jack and Milly’s daughter, Janice and her husband Garry, alongside her brother John and his wife Lyndy, operated the family business for many years, adapting to the ever-changing real estate market and landscape.
In 2014, McCathies Real Estate joined the Landmark franchise, inviting John and Paula into the business and renaming the establishment to what it’s known as today, Nutrien Harcourts McCathies.
Seeing the business evolve from the days of hand printed for sale signs, to what it has now become, Lyndy stayed as partners alongside John and Paula for many years up until Lyndy officially retired at the end of 2021.
“I think the best memories are all the people that we connected with during the time, whether they be salespeople or owners’ tenants,” Lyndy reminisced.
In recent years, Paula and John have helped grow the business exponentially, welcoming in the sale of rural properties, and building upon the business’s history with past clients – an aspect of the job Paula loves the most.
“The best thing about real estate in a small town is you actually get a history of people and property, and especially over 60 years, you get to know the whole generations, it’s lovely,” shared Paula.
Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, Rural Specialist, Auctioneer, and Clearing Sale Specialist John Mottin was born and raised in the Burdekin Shire, where he has spent his life deeply involved in the cane farming industry. Known for his strong work ethic, John prides himself on his honesty, transparency, and unwavering commitment to providing reliable, professional service. His dedication to his clients sets him apart in the competitive real estate market.
Originally from Mackay, Paula Mottin has called the Burdekin home since 1998, developing a deep connection with the town and its people. As a passionate real estate professional and coowner of Nutrien Harcourts McCathies, Paula believes real estate is about more than just property - it’s about people. She is committed to delivering exceptional personal and professional service, grounded in honesty, open communication, and a genuine desire to achieve the best possible outcomes for her clients.
Continued . . .
THE AWARD WINNING LEGACY CONTINUES
Over the years, the real estate agency has attracted plenty of praise and received an array of prestigious awards and titles including an Australian National Award, and 25 Nutrien Harcourts Awards. More recently, the Mottin’s proudly shared Nutrien Harcourts McCathies are the leading Nutrien Harcourts business in office revenue across the entire franchise, a title the pair wear with the upmost pride. John himself has been recognised as the fifth Sales Consultant in all of Australia, leading the way in a league of over 1,000 Harcourts offices, and has been ranked 27th internationally.
“When you get recognition it’s really lovely, and it’s very nice to have somebody say you’ve done a good job, and the awards; they’re not about the money, and they’re not about how well you’re doing, it’s about the way you approach people and do your job,” added Paula.
Still managing residential properties, body corporates, commercial properties, storage units and now rural and farming properties, the team at Nutrien Harcourts McCathies are dedicated to
serving their clients with the highest levels or professionalism, knowledge and expertise. Over the years, many people have had instrumental roles in the growth of the business including of course Jack and Milly McCathie, Garry and Janice Jones, John and Lyndy McCathie, John and Paula Mottin, Alan Davidson, Martin Poots, Geoff and Judith Keyse, Lyn Stenning, Neil Jensen, Rose Spelta, Sharon Hawkins, Louise Butler, Lisa Zabel, Delvene Di Bella and Sue Perry.
Although times have changed and the days of endless pages of handwritten documents and records have passed, the business still continues to observe the values of putting people first, doing the right thing, being courageous and operating with fun and laughter in every professional endeavour. Locally owned and operated for 60 years, John, Paula and the team at Nutrien Harcourts McCathies look forward to what the future holds and hope to continue celebrating many more prestigious awards and meeting outstanding business milestones.

GUIDED BY MANY HANDS A SNAPSHOT THROUGH TIME
1965
After 22 years of marriage and numerous business ventures, Jack and Milly McCathie founded McCathies Real Estate at 132 Queen Street, Ayr. Although the building needed some TLC and essential renovations, the pair were far too busy to notice its flaws!
1966
Jack and Milly invited their daughter Janice and son-in-law Garry Jones to join the growing family business. As McCathies expanded, they relocated across the road to 131 Queen Street, Ayr.
Late 1960s – 1970s
McCathies diversified beyond real estate - taking on the TAA travel agency, becoming Elna sewing machine agents, and importing cane furniture. During this period, Jack and Milly’s son John and his wife Lyndy joined the family business. John managed Ayr Secondhand Dealers, while Lyndy supported the growing rental and property management side alongside Janice.
1978
Jack and Milly purchased the prominent corner building at 262 Queen Street, seeing its potential for expansion.
1979
McCathies Real Estate and Ayr Secondhand Dealers moved to 262 Queen Street, Ayr. The business also launched Jan & Lyndy’s Sewing World, adding a fabric and haberdashery shop to the thriving premises.
1980s
With no computers, all admin and bookkeeping were done manually including long nights writing cheques at the dining table. Despite retiring, Jack and Milly remained close by to lend a hand when needed.
1987
Jack and Milly officially retired, leaving the business in the capable hands of Janice, Garry, John, and Lyndy.
1991
McCathies purchased the rent roll from Burdekin Real Estate. With the rent roll growing rapidly, the business entered the computer age - marking a significant (and challenging) step forward in administration.
2002–2009
The Burdekin experienced a property boom. Out-of-town buyers started snapping up multiple properties, and the demand for rentals surged. McCathies launched its first website - mccathiesrealestate.com.auleading to a flood of enquiries. The rent roll expanded rapidly, and prices began to rise after years of stagnation.
2014
John and Paula Mottin became partners with John and Lyndy McCathie. The business began trading as Landmark Harcourts McCathies, and Janice officially retired.
2015
Janice sold her shares to Paula and Johnnie and officially retired from the business.
2017
The company acquired the rental portfolio from Sugar Realty, expanding the rent roll significantly.
2018
Further growth came with the acquisition of Brandons Real Estate’s rental portfolio.
2019
The Landmark franchise rebranded as Nutrien, and the business adopted the name Nutrien Harcourts McCathies.
2021
John and Lyndy McCathie retired and sold their shares to Paula and Johnnie Mottin, officially passing the baton to the next generation of leadership.
Today
McCathies has grown from a small family-run real estate office to a full-service property agency, offering: residential, farm, and commercial sales, residential and commercial property management, storage unit management, body corporate management, property and chattel auctions and Airbnb management.

MEET YOUR REAL ESTATE AGENT
GRACE AND GRIT IN A CHANGING MARKET
Robyn Faa Real Estate continues to redefine service in Mackay’s property landscape
With decades of experience and a boutique agency built on integrity and insight, Robyn Faa Real Estate remains one of Mackay’s most trusted names. Amidst interstate migration, first-home fervour and low stock, Robyn offers clients calm, steady guidance in a fast-moving market.
Robyn reflects, “It’s very much a seller’s market, and for buyers to be competitive, they need to come in preapproved, organised, and ready to act.”
It’s advice that sounds simple, but in an emotional, fastmoving landscape, decisiveness can mean the difference between success and a missed opportunity.
“I always say to buyers, don’t be put off by multiple offers. You’ve got to be in it to win it. Make an offer where you see value and be prepared to walk away if needed.”
For first-home buyers, or parents preparing their adult children for the leap into ownership, Robyn encourages starting early.
“My best advice? Speak to a bank or broker at least 12 months before you plan to buy. That way, you’ve got time to sort your finances and know exactly what you’re working with.”
What truly sets Robyn Faa apart is her approach. Robyn herself personally manages every listing; there’s no handballing between departments or assistants. Her agency may be boutique, but her reach is substantial.
“I don’t treat clients like numbers. Every person who walks through my door receives genuine, one-on-one service. From marketing strategy to negotiation, they deal directly with me.”
Robyn also takes a refreshingly pragmatic approach to property marketing.
“I don’t mark up my marketing campaigns or insist on costly extras. I customise each campaign to suit the client, not the other way around. I’m not here to profit from flashy gimmicks—I’m here to deliver results.”
Her nuanced understanding of Mackay’s diverse neighbourhoods is one of her greatest strengths. Whether it’s the leafy streets of Northview, the laid-back lifestyle of the Northern Beaches, or the heritage charm close to the CBD, Robyn knows that each pocket of the region appeals to a different buyer.
“Investors are often drawn to areas close to town, while families want safe neighbourhoods in good school catchments. And we’ve seen a huge surge in interest from interstate buyers, particularly in beachside suburbs where the lifestyle speaks for itself.”
While her professional polish is unmistakable, Robyn’s journey is marked equally by resilience. After the loss of her husband in 2019, she has raised her four children while growing her business — proof that strength and softness can coexist beautifully. That warmth is felt in every interaction, every listing, every settlement.
Robyn Faa Real Estate isn’t simply selling homes, it’s shaping futures, one considered decision at a time. In a market constantly in motion, Robyn remains the quiet confidence in the room, helping clients move forward with clarity and care.
After all, real estate isn’t just about location. It’s about trust — and Robyn Faa has earned it.

KEYS TO A COMEBACK Lukas Vaid Returns To Real Estate
After three years away from the local property scene, familiar face and real estate agent Lukas Vaid has returned, bringing with him not just experience but a renewed passion shaped by family, community, and a desire to make a difference.
Although Lukas never truly left the Whitsundays, it was the pull of family life that ultimately brought him back to real estate full-time, after a period of working fly-in, fly-out.
“Starting a family and having a daughter made me want to be more present,” he shared. “I wanted to enjoy watching her grow up.”
He’s returned to Taylors Property Specialists, where he previously worked closely with Brad Sobott. “I worked at Taylors for about three years, and I learned a lot under Brad’s guidance. He’s a very professional agent and auctioneer.”
His path into real estate was unexpected. With a background in engineering and a methodical mindset, it was actually his wife, who was already in the industry, who first suggested he consider it. A casual chat with Rob Taylor quickly snowballed, and within two weeks, he was in the office and starting his new career.
From the outset, it was clear real estate was more than just listings and sales.
“It’s the people,” he says.
always easy, but it’s very satisfying.”
Now stepping out solo as a sales agent, he’s determined to make his mark. “I can’t afford to make mistakes, everything I do matters, down to the last detail.
“I don’t have the luxury of thinking things will just come to me. I have to work for it, and I’m prepared to do that.”
His approach to real estate is a mix of precision and relatability. “I’ve got that methodical, engineering side, but I’m also just a normal person.
“I don’t want to be seen as someone that’s scary or unapproachable or too, you know, stuck up or caught up in the world. I’m just another person, I’m just another local.”
While the market has shifted since the COVID boom, Lukas sees that change as a healthy one.
“Things are more sustainable now. There are fewer listings, and the level of activity has settled. But that’s not a bad thing, it’s more balanced, and it’s giving first home buyers confidence again.”
“I think we are back at a healthy level.”
homes all the time. You could fly in on Friday and be back at work Monday.”
Professionally, the next 12 months are about rebuilding momentum and connections. “Real estate is such a fast-paced and relationshipbased industry.
“Real estate is such a fast-paced and relationship-based industry. Returning to it feels like jumping on a running treadmill.
“I’ve got the background, people remember me, but I am ready to get back out there and really build those relationships again. It is a small town, and you build relationships quickly, and they matter.”
In an industry often plagued by stigma, Lukas is keen to break the mould.
“Taylor’s is a very family-oriented office. My wife works here, so does Rob and his wife. It’s closeknit. We all have the same values.
“We’re not corporate, we’re a community.”
For those thinking of making the move to the Whitsundays, his advice is to do it:
“It’s a beautiful place to live. I used to drive back over the hill after being away and think, wow, this view never gets old. I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else.”
“Seeing people’s faces, understanding the emotional side of a transaction; it’s incredibly fulfilling to join the dots between a buyer and seller. You see the joy of a young couple stepping into their first home, or the relief of a seller navigating a difficult situation. It’s not
That confidence was evident in the recent buzz over a unique listing he handled: a half-share in Temple Island, off the coast of Cape Palmerston. The island, listed at offers over $599,000, drew media attention for its affordability and the lifestyle opportunity it offered.
“There was no catch. It was just a 50 per cent share, and we were trying to show that it is possible, people do this with yachts and holiday

FROM MACKAY, FOR MACKAY – 25 YEARS OF GARDIAN
From humble beginnings as a mortgage broking venture, Gardian has grown into one of Mackay’s most respected and dynamic organisations — and in 2025, it proudly celebrates 25 years of being with you, at every step.
Co-founded by Denise and her late husband Peter Phillips in 2000, Gardian began as a small, family-run mortgage business built on trust, hard work, and heart. In the years that followed, Peter’s brothers Ben and Luke Phillips, along with long-time business partner Ben Kerrisk, joined the fold, helping shape the business into the powerhouse it is today.
What began with a single service offering has since evolved into a fully integrated business, with specialised teams across Finance, Insurance, Financial Planning, Real Estate, Property Management, and Commercial Sales and Leasing. Proudly Mackay-owned and operated, Gardian continues to set the standard for what it means to be a people-first business.
At the core of Gardian is a culture of care — a belief that when you look after your people and community, success naturally follows. Their guiding philosophy, captured in their ‘Just Cause’, is simple but powerful:
Exceeding expectations together, uniting our family and community, leaving eternal footprints for all to follow.
That culture has carried them through immense challenges, including the devastating loss of staff members Trudy and Fin, and founding director Peter’s passing in May 2023. Yet the Gardian tribe, supported by a loyal leadership team, continues to lead with resilience, generosity and purpose.
As Gardian celebrates 25 years, its legacy is clear — a business built on values, driven by community, and always with you, at every step.

PASSION MEETS PRECISION
With Ohana Pools
Ohana Pools may be new to the Whitsundays scene, but its foundations are anything but inexperienced. Behind the business is creative craftsman Aaron Lemanski, whose long history in pool building, design and detail-driven work sets him apart.
Aaron first entered the pool industry in 1997, starting an apprenticeship with Nevada Pools under the supervision of Warren Hearn. Over the years, he worked with several respected pool companies and even ran a pebble crew in Mackay. Like many tradespeople with creative skills, his career branched into other industries, including tattooing and visual design. These experiences now influence his distinctive approach to construction, where he prioritises quality over quantity.
“We’re not trying to take on every job. We prefer to work closely with one or two clients at a time, really putting in the effort to make each project special.”
Despite his broad experience, it was a friend’s backyard project that pulled him back into the pool industry.
“Helping Isaac with his pool really took me back to when I was younger. It was something I swore I’d never return to, but here I am, back building pools and I absolutely love it,” Aaron explained.
Ohana Pools offers both fibreglass and custom concrete pools. Fibreglass options are economical and faster to install, while concrete allows for fully tailored designs that suit sloping blocks or one-of-a-kind visions. The team works closely with each client to guide them through the best choice for their space, style and lifestyle.
“Some people want something simple. Others want something unique that works with the land. We help them figure out what fits best.”
“We do everything from custom concrete builds to fibreglass pools, and we can even customise fibreglass designs to suit the space.”
While fibreglass pools are a popular choice, Ohana Pools takes a case-bycase approach.
“We’re always focused on finding the best option for the client. For example, if I think concrete is the better fit, I’ll suggest we form and engineer it that way, so it also supports the ground behind it.”
Beyond construction, Aaron’s artistic background shines through in his design process.
“The things I can see now compared to when I was in construction before are totally different. Tattooing has improved my eye for detail and given me a ‘do it once, do it right’ level of precision!”
The name Ohana was inspired by his young daughter’s love of Lilo and Stitch. With ohana meaning “family”, it reflects the values at the core of the business.
“We’re a family building pools for other families.”
Post-installation, Ohana Pools continues to support clients. They partner with trusted local pool shops and offer guidance on water care, cyclone preparation and ongoing maintenance. One popular feature is the Vantage in-floor cleaning system, which makes pool upkeep effortless.
“It makes a huge difference. You can leave your pool for weeks and it still looks great.”
With three projects currently underway, a home build in Hideaway Bay, and a commitment to staying boutique, Aaron is focused on quality, creativity and connection. Looking ahead, he also hopes to give back.
“My old boss helped me find my path when school didn’t work out. I’d love to give someone else that same chance one day.”
With a passion for craft, a heart for community and a keen eye for detail, Ohana Pools is quickly becoming one of the Whitsundays’ most exciting and thoughtful pool specialists.

What began as a practical solution has grown into a local success story, transforming backyards across the Whitsundays, one plunge pool at a time.
Spotting a clear gap in the market, Instant Pools Whitsundays stepped in to deliver high-quality, Australian-made plunge pools to properties previously considered too difficult for installation.
Jack ‘Lofty’ Loft and Casey Loft, founders of Instant Pools Whitsundays and also the team behind Whitsunday Crane Hire, shared the story of how their pool business first came to life.
“There wasn’t anything out there for above ground or freestanding pools, especially for sloping blocks,” Lofty said.
“We were constantly installing pools for other companies through our crane hire business and kept running into the same problems, that’s where we saw a gap in the market.”
Now, three years in, the company exclusively services the Whitsundays, offering little fibreglass pools that are durable, stylish, and surprisingly simple to install.
“If your site’s ready, we lift it into place, fill it with water, and you can be swimming that afternoon.”
The pools weigh just over a tonne, which is a featherweight compared to 12-tonne precast concrete alternatives.
“From a crane perspective, that makes a huge difference. We can place them up to 46 meters out with our current fleet, and that just opens up a whole range of sites.”
Weight isn’t the only difference. Unlike shipping container pools, which struggle with salt and chlorine corrosion, Instant Pools’ fibreglass pools are made to last.
“They’re framed in glass-reinforced plastic, not steel, so they don’t rust. They’re strong, clean, and perfect for our coastal climate.”
Made by Compass Pools, the range includes freestanding fibreglass pools in “Plunge” “Relax”, “Refresh”, and “Play” models, all of which are completely customisable.
“They’re all Australian-made, too. We need to support quality local suppliers, and our customers appreciate knowing they’re getting a product built for Aussie conditions.”
On the note of supporting locally, Lofty added that giving back is a big part of the business’s DNA. Over the years, they’ve proudly thrown their support behind a diverse mix of local and regional causes, from grassroots footy teams like the Brahmans and high-octane motorsports to netball clubs, mental health initiatives, not-forprofits and community festivals.
The team isn’t afraid to innovate either.
“One customer wanted an infinity-style window at the end of their plunge pool,” he says.
“We worked with the manufacturer, and 12 months later, we delivered the first of its kind. It gives the illusion of a negative edge but keeps all the water contained.”
Despite juggling Instant Pools alongside Whitsunday Crane Hire, the founders maintain a sharp focus on customer service.
“We’re not the cheapest out there, and we’re upfront about that. But what we offer is service and quality. If something’s not right, we’ll fix it. That’s how we run both businesses.”
At its core, Instant Pools is about bringing luxury pool experiences to people who never thought it possible.
“A lot of people have easements or tricky sites and think they can’t have a pool. We show them they can, without the cost and complexity of concrete construction.”
“We just love seeing the customer’s reaction when it’s finished. There’s nothing better than knowing we helped turn a backyard into a space for fun, connection, and relaxation.”

PROSERPINE VET SURGERY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS YOUNG
With Owner Faye McPherson & Vet Nicole Frohlich
Since 1975, Whitsundays locals have trusted the tried-and-tested veterinary stalwart that is Proserpine Vet Surgery (PVS)—and the good news is, they won’t have to stop any time soon.
“We’re 50 years young,” says owner Faye McPherson, reflecting on the clinic’s proud legacy and ongoing commitment to the Whitsundays community.
Faye’s journey to PVS was one of a caring, resilient and community-focused nature—three key elements that make up the core values of PVS today.
After years of locum work, Faye was drawn to Proserpine by its warm climate, tight-knit community and the sense of professionalism she encountered at the clinic.
“It was an enjoyable clinic to work in... the mainstay nurse, Billye-Jean Stevens, ran a tight, tidy ship. She was just a pleasure to work with,” Faye says. “Bill Bowman, the then owner, and Billye-Jean were trustworthy, genuine people with high standards.”
What began as temporary work soon turned into a long-term commitment. In 2003, Faye became a partner in the business and, after seven years, took the reins entirely, growing the clinic steadily year by year, all while juggling the demands of raising two young children, including her
daughter with Cystic Fibrosis.
“My second child has a chronic illness. This meant a lot of work; physiotherapy on the chest, morning and night, lots of supplementary medication… so I thought, ‘I need to help the surgery to grow, so I can take time off to be with her when I needed to’.”
And boy, did the business grow.
The clinic expanded by about 25 % annually. Faye balanced hands-on veterinary work with more managerial responsibilities, balancing growth while maintaining the clinic’s familyoriented, friendly atmosphere.
“We pride ourselves on providing a friendly country service you can rely on,” she says.
“It’s about supporting each other, caring for the community, and delivering the best possible care for our patients. I tell my team we are here to serve people the way they wish to be served.”
Technological advancements have played a big part in PVS’s evolution. From traditional X-rays to state-of-the-art ultrasound machines, dental units, and rapid blood analysis equipment, the clinic keeps pace with the latest tools to ensure prompt, accurate diagnoses.
“We used to wait days for blood test results— now, it takes 12 minutes,” Faye explains.
“And computerisation has revolutionised how
we manage patient records and day-to-day operations.”
Already a household name in the local veterinary industry, PVS continues to grow, and its latest hire, Nicole, is helping lead the charge.
Nicole brings with her 10 years of full-time experience–the last 8 years in emergency medicine on the Gold Coast, but also a modern approach to veterinary care that’s set to refresh the clinic’s direction, while staying true to the roots that made them so successful.
In just 10 weeks, she’s already prompted new investments in state-of-the-art equipment and is expected to step into a partnership role as the clinic continues to evolve.
“She’s bringing the latest and greatest care,” says Faye.
“I think the clinic’s in good hands going forward, long past my tenure.”
Q: What would you say is the most important lesson you’ve learned over the years?
A: Communication. If you’re not communicating clearly, you might do great work, and still end up with an unhappy client. You’ve got to explain, listen, and guide people. Also— to care. I’m a mum, so that comes naturally to me. In this job, you might work all day and then be on call all night. You have to genuinely care.

Guiding Eclipse Into The Future
With Owner and Business Financial Adviser, Justin Butler
For more than two decades, Justin Butler has been at the helm of Eclipse, steering the business with purpose and adaptability through changing economic tides and shifting local dynamics.
A seasoned financial adviser with over 30 years of experience, Justin established Eclipse in 2003. His professional focus has long been on navigating complex financial landscapes for self-employed individuals and high-net-worth clients.
These days, Justin plays more of a consultative role within the business. His wealth of experience remains a valuable asset, often called upon when
strategic insight or clarity on intricate matters is needed.
This approach allows him to dedicate time to the more challenging aspects of financial planning, while also looking ahead to new opportunities and growth for Eclipse.
A proud Whitsundays local since 1992, Justin lives in the region with his wife Susan and their three children. He is also an active contributor to the community, serving as a long-time committee member of the Whitsunday Sportspark and Club Whitsunday in Airlie Beach, where he’s committed to enhancing the facility for the benefit of the wider community.
Community Connections and Financial Know-How
With Senior Financial Adviser Steve Obst
As a key figure in Eclipse’s future direction, Steve Obst brings a wealth of experience and reliability to the team. He’s taken on much of Justin’s client base, giving Justin room to focus on the firm’s long-term growth. In doing so, Steve has gradually built relationships with many local clients and enjoyed becoming part of the broader Whitsundays community.
“We have a really lovely client base, which makes my job easy!” said Steve.
With a particular interest in working with retirees, Steve says it’s rewarding to help them navigate complex superannuation and pension matters.
“I find working with our retired clients really satisfying because I can help them negotiate fairly complex Superannuation and pension
Personalised Planning with Purpose With Eclipse’s Financial Adviser Jake Flaherty
Jake Flaherty takes a highly personal approach to financial planning. He’s driven by a desire to give clients the kind of support he once wished he’d had. He believes every financial journey is unique, and he’s committed to helping individuals map out a future that aligns with their goals, lifestyle, and personal values.
“Managing finances can be quite a confusing area for a lot of people,” explains Jake.
“Often, people come into money very quickly through something like inheritance or they’ve finally got their super pension, and working out how to best use it can be quite confronting. It’s definitely not one size fits all. Some people are coming into retirement and want to sit in the shade and read books, others want to travel the world!”
Jake takes the time to get to know each client’s priorities, helping them gain clarity and confidence in their financial future.
“When you tell them that they will have 20 years of comfortable retirement and see the relief on their faces, it’s very rewarding.”
Since joining Eclipse in 2019, Jake has combined a sharp analytical mind with a strong passion for helping others.
Away from the office, Jake is equally dedicated to his family and community. A father to three energetic boys, he juggles work and home life with enthusiasm. He’s also heavily involved with Whitsunday United Football Club, where he’s both a seasoned player and respected senior member.
issues. Getting positive outcomes is very rewarding, and I love that every week is different.”
Having known each other for more than three decades, Steve and Justin share both a professional history and a solid friendship. So, when Steve decided it was time for a lifestyle change, it was a natural fit when an opportunity at Eclipse came up.
While Steve once imagined life in the police force, he says helping people take control of their financial futures has proven just as meaningful and just as rewarding.
Outside of the office, Steve is often found out on the water with the Whitsunday Game Fishing Club or at the range with the Bowen Sporting Shooters Association.
The Real Cost Of Not Getting Financial Advice With Zoe Kennedy
Australians today are navigating an increasingly complex financial terrain — from managing mortgages, superannuation, and insurance to preparing for retirement and developing effective tax strategies. The financial decisions people face are significant and often overwhelming. Add the weight of a cost-of-living crisis, and it’s no surprise that many feel stretched, uncertain, and unsure where to start.
Yet, financial advice is still widely seen as a luxury — something reserved for the wealthy or retired, something to deal with later in life. But the truth is, the greatest cost may come from not seeking advice at all.
At its core, financial advice is about helping you make informed, strategic decisions that support your goals and improve your long-term wellbeing. This may involve setting clear priorities, structuring your cash flow and debt, building investment portfolios, optimising superannuation and tax strategies, protecting your income through insurance, and planning for life’s transitions — whether that’s buying a home, changing careers, or retiring.
But the technical side is just the beginning. Where quality financial advice really proves its worth is in helping people stay on track when emotions rise. Because let’s face it — we’re not always rational with money. We tend to panic in downturns, overspend when confidence is high, delay important decisions out of fear, and underestimate the future costs of inaction. An adviser’s real value often reveals itself not in calm times, but in moments of uncertainty — when clarity, structure, and an unbiased view are most needed.
Research by Vanguard and Russell Investments show financial advisers can add around 3–4 per cent in annual value, not by picking the perfect stock, but by helping clients avoid emotionally driven decisions. That value compounds significantly over time. Financial advisers are here to ask the right questions, challenge knee-jerk reactions, and help you stay focused on the big picture, not the headlines or hype.
Still, many Australians attempt to manage their finances alone — and understandably so. We’ve all tried a bit of DIY in the hope of saving money. But much like fixing plumbing or rewiring a house, what seems simple on the surface often reveals unexpected complexity. In hindsight, many realise the time, risk, and stress could have been avoided by engaging a professional from the outset.
Financial advice isn’t about complexity. It’s about creating a strategy tailored to your life, with someone in your corner to keep you accountable and confident, especially when life throws you off track.
In a world full of noise and competing priorities, advice offers something rare: clarity, control, and peace of mind.
And when you consider what’s really at stake — your lifestyle, your security, your future — the real question isn’t can you afford to get advice?
It’s can you afford not to?

Inspirational Quote: “You cant do everything, but you can do something – and to someone, that something is everything”
Andrea is a fifth generation coal miner and it’s where she started her career also.
She started underground in 2001 and was one of the first few female underground coal miners in Australia, and it delighted her grandfather in the UK.
These days, Andrea has swapped the mine site for changing peoples lives through meaningful employment. As a Business Development Consultant with Aimbig Employment, she’s the powerhouse behind connecting employers with the right people.
“We’re genuinely people-driven and solutions-focused. We care— about people, about outcomes, and about making a difference.”
“I feel lucky every day, because, who wouldn’t want to be part of something that changes lives?”
When she’s not creating employment magic, Andrea is all heart. On Wednesdays she volunteers to buy, cook, and serve hot meals for people sleeping rough in Mackay. She loves helping in any way possible, big or small. From paying for somebody’s groceries, offering a lift to a mum and her kids caught walking in the rain, or writing plans to help someone bring their small business idea to life.
She finds great purpose in those moments.
And at home you’ll see her with her tight-knit family, including stepkids, grandkids and a very needy Maltese Shih Tzu.

Occupational Therapist and Owner at Empowering Kids Therapy, and Owner of Bright Patch Café
Inspirational Quote: “To create is to step into wonder, and to thrive is to invite others in.”
Jameela Walker is equal parts Occupational Therapist and business owner. She is the imaginative force behind the upcoming Empowering Kids Therapy clinic and the Bright Patch Café. Both will be vibrant spaces that celebrate inclusion, creativity and connection in the heart of the Whitsundays.
As a child, Jameela loved to act and dance, she performed with the SBS Children’s Choir and Orchestra, studied cello and drama, and dove headfirst into the world of performance with boundless enthusiasm. That love of the stage never really left; it simply transformed. These days, instead of centre stage, she shines behind the scenes, creating environments where kids and families can find their own spotlight.
“Empowering Kids Therapy is about supporting kids and families to be their best authentic selves through functional skill development by using an Occupational Therapy Lens,” Jameela said.
Empowering Kids Therapy clinic was born from Jameela’s personal passion and deep desire to make a difference. She wanted to empower children and families to celebrate their differences.
Empowering Kids Therapy will boast an indoor and outdoor sensory gym where children can explore, play, and thrive, rain or shine.
But her creativity didn’t stop there.
If Empowering Kids is the heart, Bright Patch Café is the soul. Inspired by the playful spirit of Alice in Wonderland, the café is a family-friendly haven where good food meets feel-good vibes.
“I wanted to create an inclusive space for the community to eat, play and thrive whilst enjoying a fun and bright atmosphere,” Jameela added.
She’s also no stranger to giving back, supporting causes close to her heart, including MND and cancer foundations, and lending a hand in the community whenever possible.
“I think of life as a bit of an adventure,” she reflects.
“Building Empowering Kids Therapy and Bright Patch Café has been the most life-changing adventure of all.
“I wanted to craft a place where every family could step out of the ordinary and into a world where curiosity is celebrated, difference is beautiful, and everyone belongs.”
Bright Patch Café will open end of July / early August 2025 at 22 Main Street, Proserpine and Empowering Kids Therapy clinic will open early next year or late 2025 at Bright Patch Café as an ‘extra’ in the back yard.
What’s your go-to coffee order?
“My coffee order is a barista’s nightmare: Cappuccino, warm, coconut milk, half strength and honey.”
What’s next for Bright Patch Café, and how does it align with your future and values?
“We will be hosting events and already have a number of prearranged bookings. We aim to connect Empowering Kids Therapy and Bright Patch Café as one for our junior hospitality program we may launch in 2026.”

Escape the ordinary and dive into your next ultimate music holiday. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Whitsunday Islands, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music offers more than just world-class performances; it’s a three-day, town-wide celebration.
This November 7th-9th, prepare to immerse in three days of world-class live music across a variety of venues throughout the vibrant seaside town of Airlie Beach, Whitsundays.
Forget massive queues, at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music the music is all around, the buses are free, and the vibes are relaxed.
From the Main Stage on the water at Whitsunday Sailing Club to intimate gigs in cafes and rock ‘n’ roll bands in bars, the entire town becomes one giant stage. This isn’t just about setlists and schedules, it’s about discovering incredible music in intimate settings, enjoying fresh seafood with ocean views, and letting the laid-back atmosphere wash over you.
With a lineup so stacked it should come with a baggage limit, this year’s event brings together iconic Aussie legends including Pete Murray, Jessica Mauboy, The Screaming Jets, Diesel, Choirboys, The Black Sorrows, Tex Perkins and Matt Walker, Bachelor Girl and Jayne Denham, and that’s just a taste.
In total over 60 acts covering all genres will play over the weekend with the final lineup to include finalists from the Passport to Airlie national original talent search which is held in nine regions across the country.
This powerful platform offers emerging artists careerdefining prizes and the chance to perform at one of the country’s most iconic destination festivals.
Since 2013, over 3,000 acts have entered for their chance to win a spot on the Festival Main Stage. In 2025, 13 previous Passport to Airlie contenders join the line up, proving that winning isn’t the only road to success in this epic original live music showcase!
Due to the festival’s popularity and the demand for accommodation, attendees are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.

NOSTALGIA: A Theatrical Time Machine Ignites Airlie Beach
Step aside, ordinary nights out — NOSTALGIA is rewriting the rulebook on entertainment in the Whitsundays.
Launching Friday 1 August at 7pm at Magnums Hotel, this immersive new theatre experience is set to transform Airlie Beach into a portal of pure retro decadence. Part nightclub, part high-end theatre show, NOSTALGIA takes audiences on a glittering journey through the decades — from the Motown magic of the swinging ’60s to the club-bumping anthems of the early 2000s.
But don’t expect sticky floors and thumping bass. The iconic Magnums is undergoing a theatrical glow-up — think velvet vibes, plush seating and a full sensory immersion into music, fashion and freedom. The venue is being reimagined as a pop-up palace of performance, offering a seated, cabaret-style experience unlike anything currently on offer in the region.
The show itself is a kaleidoscope of eras — dripping in disco lights, packed with powerhouse vocals, jaw-dropping acrobatics, high-octane choreography, and costumes that would make Bowie blush. Whether you lived through bell bottoms and boomboxes or discovered the decades via TikTok, NOSTALGIA is your backstage pass to the best of every era.
“We’re reimagining the classic night out — with a theatrical twist,” say creative directors Angela and Emmalene, the powerhouse duo behind the production. “Whether you lived through the disco days or just love the music, NOSTALGIA brings those unforgettable eras to life in a totally new way.”
Adding to the excitement, the cast of NOSTALGIA will also be strutting their stuff beyond the theatre. As part of the Whitsundays Reef Festival on Saturday 2 August, performers will don full costume for the street parade before taking over the main stage in a show-stopping evening set — a free taster for festivalgoers who want a glimpse of the spectacle before booking tickets.
Catch NOSTALGIA weekly from August 1, with performances every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night at 7pm. Whether you’re a local craving something new or a holidaymaker chasing unforgettable memories, this is your chance to time-travel in style — cocktail in hand.
Velvet, vocals, vintage glamour — it’s not just a theatre show. It’s a party through time.
Book early. Dress fabulously. Dance responsibly.

WHERE SUNDAY NEVER ENDS
The
Sundays Debuts at Hamilton Island Race Week’s 40th Anniversary
Long lunches, luxury yachts, and legendary chefs—welcome to Race Week reimagined.
For its debut at Hamilton Island Race Week, boutique hotel The Sundays is setting a new standard in seaside sophistication. Inspired by the spirit of a long, lazy Sunday, the hotel made waves when it opened in April 2025, drawing praise for its elevated coastal style and island-cool energy.
This August, The Sundays brings its signature blend of laidback luxury to the 40th anniversary of Hamilton Island Race Week—a regatta that’s as much a social event as it is a sporting one.
Front and centre of the festivities? A three-day escape designed to indulge the senses, starting with a waterside long lunch at Catseye Pool Club. Curated by acclaimed chef Josh Niland and presented by MECCA COSMETICA, guests will enjoy a multi-course, Champagne-paired menu alongside a sun-drenched skincare moment.
As the sun sets, an exclusive beachfront dinner under the stars—led by chef Alanna Sapwell-
Stone and paired with WHIPBIRD Wines— promises storytelling, connection, and culinary magic. The experience wraps with VIP access aboard Impulsive Superyacht, offering frontrow views of the on-water action, bubbles in hand.
On the water, Race Week celebrates its competitive edge with the debut of the Palm Beach Motor Yachts Trans-Tasman 49er Series—bringing Olympic-class sailing to the Whitsundays. Elite Australian and New Zealand crews will battle it out in what’s playfully dubbed the Wetisloe Cup, in a thrilling lead-up to Brisbane 2032.
And for thrill-sellers? Wingfoiling debuts at Race Week on Saturday, August 16. Visitors are invited to bring along their foils and show off their speed, agility, and freestyle tricks on the water, with epic views for spectators from Bommie Deck.
Whether you’re a foodie, a sailor, or just here for the vibes, The Sundays at Race Week is where summer lives—no matter the season.

MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SMILE
DR DANICA O’BRIEN FROM HANLY DENTAL STUDIO
Don’t just skim the surface, dive deep and unearth the buried root cause.
"Sophie is extremely passionate about bringing success and happiness to others’ lives, and I highly recommend her to anyone looking for clarity, direction, achieving goals, and creating a life you have always dreamed of." Haley, North Queensland
“I have been to many psychologists throughout my life, and I’ve told my story many times. In only three sessions with Sophie, I finally got the clarity and peace I have been longing for. “ Patrick, Melbourne
Favourite place to unwind: On the cattle property in Habana
Out of scrubs: Riding horses or walking the dogs
Daily habit for focus: Planning the day ahead in the morning – both clinically and personally
Advice to clients: “You’re not alone… It’s okay to feel anxious. What matters most is that you’ve taken the first step.”
Dental myth debunked: “If nothing hurts, nothing is wrong.” Pain is often a late-stage sign, which is why routine check-ups and cleans matter.
Say hello to Dr Danica O’Brien, the newest smiling face at Hanly Dental Studio, bringing a mix of clinical excellence, country charm, and down-toearth compassion to the Mackay region.
From a young age, Danica knew dentistry was more than fillings and flossing.
“Early on, I realised dentists don’t just fix teeth, they can ease pain, restore confidence and build lasting relationships with patients,” she said.
Seeing patients walk away smiling is one of the most rewarding parts of her role.
“It warms my heart to make patients feel comfortable seeing the dentist and encouraging a safe and pleasant experience in the dental chair.”
While her hands are steady with a scaler, her feet are more at home in boots. Outside the clinic, you’ll find her on horseback, walking the dogs, or relaxing on her family’s cattle property in Habana.
Danica believes great dentistry starts with trust. From the moment a patient walks through the door, she prioritises comfort, communication, and care that goes beyond the gums.
“We are here to listen and make you feel comfortable in the chair.”
What keeps you passionate about the industry?
A: The cases where the transformation goes beyond just teeth and truly impacts someone’s life and opinion on dentists in general.

BYE-BYE MUM BOD!
One Woman’s Journey To Reclaim Her Body
BY RACHAEL SMITH
At 43, I was sliding into middle age with the grace of a woman kicking and screaming, desperately trying to hang on to my oncefirm, perkily reliable body, despite the inevitable. But my body was betraying me. My thighs: wobbling with cellulite. My bottom: sagging and and spreading like a comfy old couch. And my one loyal companion — my slim waist — had developed a soft, squishy paunch.
In my 20’s I had been a pert size 8, in my thirties I had been a tight size 10 and now in my 40’s I was finding myself an overly comfortable size 12. So, what now? Embrace the “mum bod” and continue to bulge in ill-fitting clothes or quietly disappear under an oversized shirt? Or fight back — possibly fail — and risk another spiral of disappointment?
I chose to fight. Again.
For two solid years, I was a regular at my local gym. High-intensity cardio, boxing, weight training, body combat, step class — you name it, I did it. And I loved it! But the results? Nothing. My bottom still drooped. The stubborn saddlebag weight clung on. And my tummy bump? A permanent plus-one.
Then, a friend introduced me to something different: a metabolic diet. This wasn’t some cookie-cutter meal plan or cabbage soup nonsense. This was precision nutrition, based entirely on my body’s unique needs.
At my first consult, I weighed 73kg. My goal? Under 65kg — ideally 62kg. Whitsunday-based Nutritionist Bec Tarver assured me it was absolutely achievable. First step? A blood test sent off to Germany to be scientifically analysed with some top-secret formula that matches your metabolism with your ideal foods.
We locked in a start date for a quieter time in life, and my husband and I jumped in together. The program kicked off in June with Phase 1: a weekend of nothing but veggies. Then came Phase 2, and things got serious. Every ingredient was weighed to the gram. Meals were spaced precisely five hours apart. No snacks. No sugar. No carbs. No joy. Just water. And food cooked without oil, butter, or flavouring.
Let me tell you — the detox hit hard. We were foggy-brained, moody, and exhausted. Food was joy, and now joy had ghosted me. I also discovered how often I used food as a reward. After long workdays, after events, after anything. Without it, life felt flat, my spark was gone.
Two weeks in, I dragged myself back to Bec. “Why didn’t you tell me you were struggling earlier?” she asked, clearly concerned.
I told her I thought I had to just battle through it. But she listened and we made some gamechanging tweaks: milk in my tea, a little fat in my cooking, vitamin B supplements.
And just like that, everything shifted, a new life began. I felt energised, clear-headed, and no longer bloated or gassy. I was still eating small portions and following the five-hour rule, but I was finally thriving.
Four weeks in, and we were both feeling the best we had in years. My husband’s belly had vanished — and he was literally dancing around the house. His snoring? Gone. He felt agile and alive. In total, he’d lost nearly 10kg — 7.5kg of that in just four weeks of the diet.
As for me? I’d dropped 7kg in two months — 5.5kg of that in the most recent four weeks. Clothes that had been suffocating me now fit like a dream. Love handles? Smoothed out. Cellulite? Almost vanished. My thighs? Shapely, not shaky.
But most of all, I felt well. Food really is fuel and I was pumping myself full of premium energy, that set me up for success! I felt like I’d cracked the code!
Now comes the next phase: making this my forever lifestyle. But for now? I’m strutting around like the sassiest version of myself — firm, fit, and full of food-fuelled joy.
Stay tuned for the next update. This mum bod is gone, and she’s not coming back!
