Editor’s letter Also in this issue, Adrian Langmead of Kubota UK gives us a timely insight on what the future holds for the groundscare industry on page 36. Will robotics and AI take eventually take over, or will there always be a place for the human touch? Battery power is becoming more prevalent, but at what cost? Fundamentally the biggest challenge to the manufacturing world is alternative fuel sources, says Adrian. Sustainable development in engine and fuel development is crucial, so that our groundsman aren’t priced out of the equipment they need to fulfil their roles. Enjoy the read this month and for those that are visiting SALTEX don’t forget to pop by and say hello.

British and International Golf Greenkeeping Association appoints new Vice President Former St Andrews Links Trust Director of Greenkeeping, Gordon Moir, has accepted the nomination to become vice president of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) in 2020, with a view to becoming president in 2021. Gordon, 60, retired from his position at St Andrews Links in 2018 following a career that saw him host more than 37 championships, including five Opens. Gordon was just the eighth person to hold the title of Director of Greenkeeping at St Andrews since the first, Old Tom Morris, retired in 1904. A farmer's son from Fraserburgh, northern Scotland, Gordon began his career at the town's golf club in 1976. He trained at Elmwood College and very quickly moved through the ranks to become head greenkeeper. After 10 years in charge at Fraserburgh, he became head greenkeeper at St Andrews’ Eden Course in 1991, later becoming the Director of Greenkeeping. He has previously served on the BIGGA National Board and is a former chairman of the association's Scottish Region. In 1995, while Chairman, Gordon met American pro, Arnold Palmer, while presenting him with a crystal vase in recognition of his efforts for the greenkeeping industry. Throughout his time at St Andrews, Gordon recognised that the club had a duty as torchbearers for the greenkeeping industry. As such, he was a great supporter of the Golf Environment Organisation and the Golf Environment Awards and would often speak at the annual BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition. As vice president, Gordon will support current president Colin Webber. Colin, 60, founded Portmore Golf Park in Devon in 1993 and is also heavily committed to ecology and sustainability, winning a Golf Environment Award at the facility in 2010. Gordon says: “I was absolutely delighted to be asked to be president of BIGGA. To be honest, it was something that I really hoped would happen and I'm glad that my retirement has enabled me to accept this opportunity. I've tried to stay involved with the greenkeeping industry since retiring and so I'm really proud to be offered the chance to represent the association in this way and meet people from all over the country who I haven't seen for a year or who I

Gordon Moir

wouldn't have met otherwise. “There is so much available to members of BIGGA, such as getting involved with the various support teams or the numerous networking opportunities, and it can open up so many doors in your career. The association has done so much for me and I look forward to being the one talking to members and spreading that message.” Colin adds: “When I was asked to become president, my first thought was ‘why aren't they asking Gordon?’ He's the perfect candidate because of what he’s done throughout his career and the level that he’s worked at. “His nomination just shows the scale of BIGGA as Portmore couldn't be further from St Andrews, both geographically and in terms of its place in the golfing industry. It shows the breadth and scale of the association and how it brings together people from across the greenkeeping industry together. I’m delighted that Gordon will be bringing all that experience to the role, which can only be a huge benefit to the association.” Gordon will be appointed Vice President of BIGGA during the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition, which takes place in Harrogate, North Yorkshire during January 2020. He will then become President at the same event the following year. BIGGA Chairman Scott Reeves said: “Each of BIGGA's presidents have brought a new dimension to the role. I'm sure Gordon will add to this increasingly-respected position in his own unique way. I look forward to working with him when he becomes vice president and onwards in his year as president.”

HTA appoints new President

HTA President Boyd Douglas-Davies with Immediate Past President Adam Taylor

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), which took place at Glee on 11 September, saw the appointment of Boyd DouglasDavies as HTA President. Boyd Douglas-Davies, CEO of Hillview Garden Centres, has taken over the Presidency from Adam Taylor of Taylors Bulbs who has come to the end of his two-year tenure in the role and moves to the role of Immediate Past President. Boyd has more than 30 years of experience in garden retail. After training at Pershore College, Boyd spent 20 years at Webbs of Wychbold during which time the business continuously grew and was recognised as one of the UK’s best garden centres. As CEO of Hillview Garden Centres he operates eight garden centres across middle England. A well-known figure in the industry Boyd is a trustee of the Greenfingers Charity and founder of Garden Re-Leaf Day. The AGM also saw the following appointments: • The ratification of James Barnes as Chairman. • The ratification of the re-appointment of Bob Hewitt as a Director of the Board. Immediate HTA Past President, Adam Taylor, comments, “I feel extremely proud and privileged to have been able to serve the association over the last two years which has seen great change, both internally and externally. It has been an exciting, occasionally challenging, but always immensely rewarding experience and I would like to thank the HTA Board and Committees for their support, along with the team at Horticulture House. I would like to welcome Boyd to

the President’s position and wish him all the best for his term of office.” The AGM also pointed to the Annual Review which outlined the many accomplishments throughout the year. Mostly notably, three key areas include: • Plant health and biosecurity – leading the plant health agenda by launching the Plant Health Management Standard and ‘Plant Healthy’ toolkit. • Recyclable plant pots – driving forward the introduction of recyclable plant pots potentially saving 8,000 tonnes of plastic going to landfill. • Industry value – for the first time quantifying the value and contribution of the industry to enable us to raise our profile with Government and decision makers. HTA President, Boyd Douglas-Davies, comments, “I feel that this is a very exciting time for the industry – yes there are lots of challenges but with this also comes lots of opportunity. Sustainability is a key area that the industry is working hard on which is hugely important. Let’s not forget we are producing a great product in the shape of plants or ‘clean air machines’. We need to shout about this from the roof tops to ensure that the buyers of the future continue to come to us for great products that have a positive impact on the environment.” He adds, “I look forward to taking the association through the next two years and encourage all members to play an active role in helping to shape the organisation for the future – ensuring the needs of the industry evolve with the challenges and opportunities that come our way.”

Environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional plastic tree spirals Green-tech returns to SALTEX this year to showcase bio spirals, part of their Treebio biodegradable tree planting range, which includes the spirals, pegs and mulch mats. These products provide a choice for landscape contractors and designers, whose clients are focusing on their own green credentials. Green-tech is the largest supplier of tree planting materials to the industry. With more than two million tree shelters in stock at any one time they are the ‘go-to’ supplier for anything tree related. In just one year they anticipate suppling tree shelters and sundry items to protect around 12 million trees. The focus on reducing the amount of plastic used in landscaping remains high and while there is no quick fix to reducing plastic in tree planting, this Yorkshire based company continually researches viable alternatives. The TreeBio range is an environmentally friendly, weed and erosion control range of planting essentials. The material used in its manufacture has been tested at an independent laboratory to be classified as fully compostable. It has also gained the DIN CERTO certificate. The TreeBio spiral will be attacked initially by UV degradation to start the break-up process. Biodegradable stabilisers are added to the material before the manufacturing process to stabilise the spiral sufficiently to withstand this UV degradation for 4 – 5 years in the place of use, but after this period it will compost down to become a soil nutrient. SCH (Supplies) Ltd sponsor an industry award at SALTEX For the second consecutive year, SCH (Supplies) Ltd will be sponsoring the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Best Managed Artificial Surface Industry Award instead of keeping stand space. The choice of award was easy to make, as SCH manufacture a large range of artificial maintenance equipment for sports venues of all sizes and budgets. This year’s most popular products have been the DCR Decompaction Rake and HSTS98 Artificial Surface Towed Sweeper. The DCR Decompaction Rake and optional DCRCA Chemical Applicator are designed to apply chemicals to long-fibre synthetic sports surfaces, most commonly 3G. The chemical is applied by a dribble/drip bar mounted in front of a row of spring-coiled scarifying tines. The tines tease and open up the surface to allow the chemical to penetrate deep into the fibres. The tines also help to remove surface compaction and aid drainage. The autumn and winter months are ideal for the Artificial Surface Towed Sweeper (Ref: HSTS98), as debris on outdoor courts can quickly deteriorate the playing conditions. When the unit is towed, the high-grip polymer wheels turn solid metal drive gears, transmitting rotational energy to the units 4 rows of brushes. The gear ratio creates fast spinning brushes, at a relatively low towing speed. The Sweeper can be used on many different surfaces due to the brushes height adjustment feature, this also greatly extends the life of the brushes, as they can be lowered as they wear. For the past two years, SCH have sponsored the IOG Industry Award to give back to the organisation that has helped keep them as one of the UK’s leading grounds care manufacturers, and they are delighted to sponsor this prestigious award. Turf product to boost root growth Learn about unique turf recovery product, Double Edge® by UPL UK & IE at SALTEX this year. Launched this year, Double Edge® combines two complementary biostimulants with the aim of boosting root growth, improving stress relief and supporting recovery in managed turf. The product features 18 different vegetable amino acids along with oligosaccharides, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.

Stephen Olive

Says Business Development Manager, Stephen Olive, “Double Edge® combines two modes of action, in which oligosaccharides accelerate the transfer of protein-building amino acids. “It’s this dual action that makes Double Edge® an ideal product for turf recovery, providing the plant with stressbusting protein in the most efficient means possible. “Groundscare professionals may already be familiar with traditional biostimulant type products, but we’re excited to showcase Double Edge® at SALTEX because it’s at the cutting edge of innovation. Not one, but two modes of action.” UPL’s biostimulant products are highly concentrated following the development of a refined cold-press extraction process at company’s manufacturing plant in St. Malo, France. Stephen added: “The extraction process means the application rate for Double Edge® is just 1L/ha, saving on precious chemical store space as well as physical man-hours.” For more information on Double Edge, join Stephen Olive and the team at stand F101. www.upl-ltd.com/uk

The high-torque gear drives are the strongest in the industry, so the challenges of reclaimed water use or poor water quality are mitigated. An extra-large, fastaccess flange compartment comfortably accommodates wire connections and other components. The new 800 series also feature Hunter’s patented TTS (Total-TopService) technology, which allows for every serviceable element of the rotor to be accessed through the top. Mechanical and electrical, big and small, you can get to every component without disturbing the playing surface. That means there’s no more digging, no more unsightly scars, and more importantly, one less item on a busy turf manager’s schedule. KAR UK to launch new Hunter TTS Another highlight on the KAR UK rotors stand will be the recently launched ST-1700V rotor which offers unrivalled high-performance irrigation for synthetic turf. Simplicity is the key to the ST1700V as it integrates Valve-in-Head (VIH) capabilities and a TTS design to simplify installation and maintenance. SALTEX visitors may well be pleased to see the Rega Rainking on display – which is an ideal sprinkler for watering sports turf and can water the complete pitch in just 2 runs. The unit is suitable for night operation which will help with water usage as less water is evaporated in the early hours. The Rainking covers up to 38m width and with 135m cable will cover up to 175m length. A trip to the KAR UK stand will also enable visitors to find out more about the innovative Kasco product portfolio which includes fountains and aerators for projects of all sizes. www.karuk.com or www.hunterindustries.com.

SALTEX PREVIEW

Chipper with aggressive torque Woodchipper manufacturer GreenMech is returning to SALTEX to showcase their brand new woodchipper series, the EVO 165. Launched earlier in the year, the EVO will be on display on stand J052 in Petrol, Diesel and - for the very first time – in tracked form. The culmination of three years in design, testing and production, the EVO responds to industry demands for a machine that delivers more aggressive torque, more powerful bite and more throughput. It combines a wealth of new features, together with some of GreenMech’s proven innovations such as disc blade chipping technology, twin horizontal hydraulic rollers and ‘No-Stress’ controls. Its large in-feed chute makes it quick and simple to input large quantities of brash and branches, with reduced snagging and increased productivity. Its new heavy-duty flywheel delivers unparalleled processing power, optimised from a 25hp Kubota diesel or 37hp Vanguard petrol engine option. A new one-piece fabricated chassis has also increased the

EVO’s durability making it suitable for even the most demanding of operational conditions. Together with improved performance, the aspects of safety and ease of maintenance have also come under the spotlight. GreenMech have fitted the EVO with a new safety bar system to minimise nuisance tripping, while a new centralised greasing point and more accessible vertical and horizontal shear bars makes routine maintenance easier to carry out. www.greenmech.co.uk Tel: 01789 400044

GROUNDCARE

The future of groundcare isn’t automated robots, it’s in alternative fuel sources by Adrian Langmead, Business Development Manager, Kubota UK Celebrating Kubota’s 40th anniversary earlier this year was a brilliant milestone for our staff, but I’d also hope for our dealers and customers too. For any business to have been successful across four decades is impressive, but it does spur opinion about what the next four decades will have in store for us and our industry. The groundcare sector is big business for us, and will continue to be right through to 2060 and beyond. As part of our continued commitment to our dealers and customers it’s important to future-gaze and think about what could be in store for the sector, which could directly impact customers, positively or negatively. It’s important we are able to offer advice and consultancy on the pertinent issues affecting the industry, and to help our dealers and customers make the right decisions for their business’s needs. The future groundsman will be human, not robot When we think 40 years ahead in the future, it’s easy to get caught up in Blade Runner-esq visions of flying vehicles, dark days, a heavy polluted world and hydroponic farms. We’re constantly bombarded with stories from the media about robots threatening jobs, whilst at the same time telling us we should be thrilled about a future of automation as it’ll make our economies more productive, as reported by professionsal services firm Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) fairly recently. However, the good news is that many futurologists believe that, although AI is incredibly smart, it will never match human creativity and problem-solving. When we consider the future of the groundcare industry, not necessarily as far ahead as 40 years’ time but in the near future, the World Economic Forum reports on battery powered equipment and how this will be the future of industries, taking over from diesel and petrol engines. This is certainly something worth discussing in our sector, which goes beyond just compliance and emissions targets but really how our industry will be powered. The days of using scythes and sheep to keep grass short are may be in the past, but there are very few robotic machines that can fulfil the demands of a groundsman

36

www.landscapermagazine.com

in today’s world. The industry will always require human intervention – by way of machine and chemical management and ultimately that problem-solving expertise that we mere mortals must cherish. While we expect to be able to manufacture even sharper blades and build machinery out of lighter and tougher materials, we will still need groundsman to maintain them. However, the future groundsman will benefit from access to big data to measure the performance of the blades and machines. They’ll be able to spot any incremental changes they can make to get their turf to within millimetres of perfection. Is the future fuel right under our noses? The obvious answer to the future for fueling our industry is electricity. We see this trend making headway already with electric cars and delivery services on our streets as we speak. Recently, The Guardian newspaper reported that the UK Government handed Jaguar Land rover a contract worth £500m to guarantee to help accelerate its progress in the global electric vehicle race. The same article also stated that the government has plans for all new properties built to have EV charging points installed. While this new policy is an interesting development for the domestic market, will we go the same way in the ground keeping industry? Battery technology currently has a long way to go. Groundsman need to use machinery for long periods of time before they would have the opportunity to recharge them and by current standards going electric would be cumbersome to put it mildly. Battery power is also expensive, and it could get even more costly. With the rise of electric fuel, we should also expect to see a rise in the cost of raw materials that go into batteries like lithium, nickel and aluminum. It is estimated that by 2025, lithium prices will climb by a least 20% according to digital platform Interesting Engineering and this isn’t a cost that groundsman have the budget to swallow. Furthermore, the main issue for sustainable innovation in this area is that there’s no way to dispose of Lithium – it can’t currently be recycled and there are huge costs involved in mining for Lithium, which is ironically still powered by diesel machines! Groundcare engines are subject to similar restrictions, as car manufacturers are having to adhere to ‘Stage V’ regulations which will doubtless be followed by Stage VI,

GROUNDCARE to improve efficiency. In fact, we have already started the ball rolling in France with the introduction of an autonomous product range of mowers and tractors. With Brexit looming and the possible impact that this may have on staff availability in the UK, it is crucial to consider methods of improving productivity through the use of automated machinery, co-existing with groundsmen. Within the next 40 years, I think we should expect to see a dramatic increase in automation in the groundcare sector. Not necessarily automation that sees robots tending

Stage VII and so on. This means manufacturers will have to continue to adapt and put more technological innovation into engines to meet the ever-changing regulations. These changes are extremely costly to manufacturers, so the challenge is to innovate, remain compliant and sustainable whilst not inflating the end cost to the customer beyond what they can afford. Autonomous vehicles are something which we will be examining in the UK, not with a view to replace humans, but

to turf across Britain, however! The evidence suggests the creativity and expertise of our groundsman will survive the technological revolution, but the equipment and tools of the future will become more adept and help groundsman to become more efficient. Fundamentally, the current industry focus is on alternative fuel sources in our near future, and rightly so, this is the biggest challenge of our time in the manufacturing business. This may well be viewed as a nuisance to the customer, but it’s a very real threat to the future of our industry. Sustainable development in engine and fuel development is crucial, so that our groundsman aren’t priced out of the equipment they need to fulfil their roles.

ISEKI UK & Ireland Throughout the Chesham Town Council district in Buckinghamshire there are a large number of highly manicured grassed areas that need dedicated upkeep. Having previously used pedestrian mowers with collector boxes, council Parks and Premises manager Paul Isom decided they needed to become more efficient, so he turned to the ISEKI SXG326. He says: “The SXG326 ride on mower collected with the same striped finish as the pedestrian mower with the added benefit of completing it in a fraction of the time. Its powerful 21hp engine means the mower easily tackles varied terrain whilst completing the jobs quickly with its generous 54” width of cut. The large 600litre hopper saves us valuable hours by limiting the amount of times you need to stop mowing in order to empty the collector. “Collection of autumn leaves by the SXG326 has been a God send, we are all relieved we no longer have to do all the tiresome work of raking. We couldn’t believe how well the collector picks these up, especially when it’s been raining and everything is sodden and heavy.” For more information visit: www.iseki.co.uk

BALI AWARDS

Winners announced for the BALI National Landscape Awards 2019 Late August saw an adjudication panel of industry experts gather at the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) Stoneleigh headquarters to decided on the winners of the BALI 2019 Awards. Out of 145 entries submitted, 91 National Landscape Awards have been bestowed on 63 BALI members with several members winning an award in multiple categories. Records were also set this year as the awards achieved the most entries received in the past 10 years, as well as the highest number of entries from first time entrants. There was also an astounding 34 international entries. Led by John Melmoe, the panel of judges individually visited and scrutinised every construction and design project in the UK. They then joined BALI Chief Executive Wayne Grills, Operations Manager Kirsty Wood and Events Project Manager

Leah Brookes to confirm the deserving winners. Strong domestic category Reflecting on this year’s tough deliberations, John Melmore says: “The meeting was extremely heated at times, with in-depth discussion on each and every scheme submitted. This is a very healthy process with a blend of good humour thrown in. The complexity of some projects entered is always interesting and shows the diverse nature of the industry in which we are involved. The majority of categories were well supported, but we noted a very strong presence from the domestic categories. The quality of both the presentation and precision of execution within this sector were extremely high. The commercial sectors have some serious competition coming through.

VIEWPOINT

Peat harvesting and environmental consequences‌ By Greg Bedson The programme ITV Tonight recently caught my attention, as consumer editor Chis Choi was investigating the green credentials of UK garden centres. One focus was on the use of peat in gardens and its affects on the environment. Footage showed peat harvesting in the bogs of Ireland, for compost destined for the UK. The peat was being dug up and transported away at an alarming rate, leaving the once thriving eco systems desolate and baron. Evidence has found that if all the peat bogs in the world to disappear, this would increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by two-thirds. Although the peat bogs cover just three percent of the earth’s surface, they store around 500 billion tonnes of carbon, which metre for metre, is more than any other terrestrial ecosystem. This of course begs the questions, is it really necessary to still be using peat? And as an industry, should we be doing more to eradicate it? Peat certainly has its benefits in the garden - its waterretaining properties and consistency allows for easy cultivation of garden flowers and fruit and vegetables, and provides the perfect medium in which to pot plants and create hanging basket displays. In fact millions of pounds are spent every year in the UK across the industry on compost containing peat. As of 2010, nearly three million cubic metres of peat are sold for horticultural use every year in the UK. Although the majority is sold to amateur gardeners, around a third is used by the horticultural industry. In 2011 the UK Government published in its natural environment white paper a series of voluntary milestones to reduce the horticultural use of peat by to zero. The target for amateur gardeners is by 2020, and a move out of peat for professional growers by 2030. However there is so far little in the way of evidence to suggest that this target will be met. Various campaigners and horticultural groups have been longing for more to be done, with some suggesting that peat containing products should adopt the cigarette packet

style warning labels, highlighting the damaging effects of using peat, arguing that this would finally spread the message and encourage people to try alternative methods. Others, including environmental organisation Friends of the Earth, say that this should go even further and that the UK should end peat use immediately, through an outright ban if necessary. The good news is that peat free alternatives are improving and brands such as Pro-Grow, which is produced using green waste collected from household gardens and public parks, help to benefit UK industries, as well as to reduce the environmental impact of transport from foreign peat extraction. Of course every plant responds in their own way to different composts, with lime hating varieties perhaps providing the greatest challenges to peat free alternatives, as many of these are alkaline based. However as the demand for peat free products grows, so hopefully will the research and development into these products, which can only be a positive for those within the industry and the amateur garden enthusiast. But for now, those of working within the industry should take some responsibility and do what they can to limit the amount of peat used and perhaps even more importantly, help to spread the word and educate the general public on its harmful effects.

Landscape Show 2019 hailed as great success

So thats it, LANDSCAPE 2019 has been and gone. Professionals from across the industry descended on Battersea Park to see the extensive range of exhibitors and their industry-leading products. LANDSCAPE’s Best in Show Competition proved its continuing popularity as thousands of visitors cast their vote on their favourite product from a selection of 12 shortlisted by a discerning industry panel. Congratulations to London Stone who’s high-performance porcelain wall cladding, DesignClad, won this year’s competition. This year, LANDSCAPE collaborated with Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to introduce a Pet Friendly Garden Competition. Overseen by TV presenter Adam Frost, Volunteer Head Gardener at Battersea, Katie Morgan and

Deputy Chief Executive of Battersea Peter Laurie, the competition was judged under three categories. Jack Sullivan won the Under 16s category to earn himself an exclusive VIP family tour of Battersea, while Dominic Butler and Simone Kirkland won the non-professional and professional categories respectively to gain £500 worth of HTA Garden Centre vouchers. Visitors of LANDSCAPE 2019 also had the opportunity to pick the brains of garden designers at the Meet the Designer sessions, which included details of career highlights from Jonathan Snow, Charlotte Rowe, Kate Gould and James Alexander Sinclair.
