Days are getting longer, and while the chilly mornings are with us still, warmer temperatures will soon be here marking the start of spring. With the “to do” list mushrooming as we get ready for the growing season ahead, now perhaps is a good time to check out the latest machines available to make light of some chores. This month we take a peek at compact tractors – offering solutions for those with larger outdoor spaces to manage (see page 24). And as the spring grass begins to flourish, mowers start to emerge from the sheds – our mowers feature on page 26 and 28 introduces some groundbreaking battery and electric powered ride ons to help achieve the perfect cut.

Marst Agri joins Corvus dealer network

Layham based Marst Agri has been appointed Corvus Off-Road main dealer for Suffolk. Boss ORV, is the sole UK distributor of the Corvus Terrain range of 4x4 utility vehicles.

GIMA bids farewell to membership ambassador

Colin Wetherley-Mein, GIMA Membership Ambassador, has decided to officially call it a day and retire from GIMA, the leading garden retail supplier organisation.  Colin has been a familiar face within the garden retail industry for 48 years, during his time having worked for Tufflink, Hurn Bros., and more recently, Vitax,

where Colin spent 27 years. During this time Colin also played an integral role on the GIMA Council, eventually becoming President in 2015.

Following his first retirement from Vitax in 2017 Colin wanted to keep supporting the industry he loves by working closely with the team at GIMA through his role as GIMA Membership Ambassador; a role originally created specifically with Colin in mind.  During his time with the association, Colin has been a fantastic support to so many GIMA members starting out in the sector, providing invaluable advice and information about how to succeed.

Vicky Nuttall, GIMA Director says: “Colin has been a great support to our members and also to me personally during my time at GIMA. There is no question that we’ll miss his energy and enthusiasm for our industry.  I know that everyone who Colin has worked with over the years will want to wish him a very long, happy and heathy retirement.”

Although Colin is retiring from GIMA, he continues his work as Greenfingers Charity Trustee. He also hopes to spend more time on his other passion as a cricket umpire.

YouTube sensation, best-selling author, garden presenter and regenerative food enthusiast, Huw Richards and expert eco-designer, interiors TV presenter and warrior on waste, Lynne Lambourne will be supporting the gardening brand, GARDENA, as ambassadors for 2023.

Huw and Lynne will work closely with GARDENA on a wide range of marketing campaigns and activities throughout the year. The Green-tech team are proud to be supporting the Gair Wood project in Leeds, run by the Leeds Ecosystem, Atmosphere and Forest (LEAF) Centre.

Gair Wood is one of the most ambitious and significant woodland creation projects in the North of England, with the primary aim to enhance biodiversity in the area through large scale tree planting.

Named after former University of Leeds Secretary Roger Gair, who retired in 2021 after more than 40 years’ service, Gair Wood is a part of the wider community forest for North and West Yorkshire, named White Rose Forest.

Spanning across a 36-hectare site, Gair Wood will feature 15 hectares of new tree planting to add to the existing four hectares of trees. The remaining space will feature a mixture of open grass, unplanted land and scrubland. This mixture of habitats and biomes aims to further increase biodiversity in the area.

Green-tech is proud to have supplied a large amount of tree protection and canes to the LEAF team which will ensure that the newly planted trees are sufficiently protected from the elements and roaming wildlife. In addition to the materials provided, several of the Green-tech team volunteered their time and planted and secured trees alongside the LEAF team, over a twoday period.

Green-tech supports woodland project in Leeds Quartix launches vehicle check app

Quartix, a global leader in fleet telematics solutions has launched a new app for fleets looking to improve safety and support compliance requirements around vehicle checks and driver safety.

The ‘Quartix Check’ app enables drivers to report vehicle health checks to the fleet manager, as well as incidents and accidents. It is available initially in the UK market, before launching in the US and Europe in the near future.

The app covers all the standard vehicle walkaround checks to ensure a vehicle is safe to drive. Phase 2 of the app will also allow fleet managers to customise the items to be inspected to tailor the checklist to their specific needs.

Initially the app is available with a 50% introductory offer discount to both new and existing Quartix customers at £1 per month per vehicle.

Plants for Perennial launches in stores this spring

Plants for Perennial will be widely available to buy from garden centres and stores across the UK from March. The collaborative scheme between Perennial, the charity for people in horticulture and four major wholesale nurseries in Hereford and Worcester is raising awareness and funds to support all those who work with plants, flowers, grass, and trees.

Supporting retailers include select Waitrose stores and many leading garden centres.

The collaboration is an example of how businesses can work together to support the charity to build better futures for people in horticulture. An on-label charity message will appear on all the plants and a proportion of all sales will be donated to Perennial.

Perennial Corporate Partnership Manager Phil Swainston comments: “Plants for Perennial is an exciting and worthy collaboration between four renowned nurseries to highlight the services we provide to the commercial horticultural sector and spread the message that we’re here for all those working in horticulture who need help. GroundsFest support growing

The new trade event GroundsFest is gaining momentum as it prepares to launch at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on 20 and 21 September 2023.

It recently announced a new partnership with the Association of Play Industries (API), the trade association for the UK play sector. Its member companies are the UK’s leading providers of indoor and outdoor playground equipment.

The API will promote membership services and many of its members will be exhibiting. GroundsFest’s free educational seminar programme will also feature APIbadged sessions.

API Chair Mark Hardy, says: “We are looking forward to seeing how this new event will promote the play industry and in particular, provide an opportunity for API members to showcase their offerings.

A former greenkeeper and spray technician at Brough Golf Club, East Yorkshire Greg has worked in the sports turf industry for more than 15 years predominantly on golf courses and racecourses. private and proprietary clubs including the Royal Automobile Club and Lingfield Park Resort in Surrey. He has volunteered and worked at many national and international tournaments including the AMEX World Golf Championships at The Grove and the All-Weather Championships at Lingfield Park Racecourse.

Agrovista Amenity has announced the appointment of Stewart Carbray and Sam Sweetzer to its team of amenity specialists.

Stewart joins the agronomy supplier from Bothwell Castle Golf Club where he worked for twenty-three years after initially joining as an apprentice.

“I achieved what I set out to do at Bothwell Castle and I saw so many improvements at the course. I wanted to stay within the industry and always had an interest in the other side of the business, so the Agrovista opportunity was just too big to ignore,” explains Stewart.

Stewart will be covering the areas of west and central Scotland and further down into Dumfries and Galloway borders, believes he has the perfect mentor at Agrovista Amenity.

“Ramsay MacGregor, my line manager, is the guy everyone goes to for technical advice and problem solving. I want to learn from him and pick up the reigns and become trusted and recognised just like him.”

Sam Sweetzer, also from a greenkeeping background, previously worked at Buckinghamshire Golf Club as the Deputy Course Manager. Throughout his career he has relied on several products from Agrovista Amenity and is looking forward to learning more about the science behind them.

Proposed peat ban does not raise major concerns for businesses says report

The Office for the Internal Market has recently published its first report, which found that the UK Government’s proposal to ban the sale of horticultural peat in England from 2024 would not have a major impact on intra-UK trade

Horticultural peat is mainly used in multi-purpose compost. The market for compost is worth around £400m in the UK.

A report to examine the effects of a peat ban followed a request in August 2022 from the Secretary of State for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for the Office for the Internal Market (OIM) to examine how the proposed ban may impact the effective operation of the internal market. The proposed ban is intended to tackle climate change by protecting peat bogs that are an important store of carbon.

The report concludes that, while the ban on horticultural peat sales in England may lead to some changes in patterns of buying and selling of peatcontaining compost within the UK that could have an impact on individual businesses, these are likely to be modest in the context of the overall market. The OIM does not expect there to be a significant impact on wider competition within the compost market. More specifically, the report finds that the likely effect on intra-UK trade will be modest because:

• only one in 10 consumers is ‘strongly motivated’ to buy a peat-containing compost

• many large retailers have already made commitments to stock only peat-free compost by the time the ban is introduced

• most manufacturers have already invested in research and development and new facilities necessary to make peat-free compost. Many will switch from producing peat-containing compost to peat-free compost rather than exit the market

• the Scottish and Welsh Governments have also signalled their intention to ban the sale of horticultural peat

Nevertheless, the report also notes that there may be some sales of peat-containing compost after the introduction of the ban, most likely through a small group of retailers who will still be willing to stock it. In addition, the report finds that shortages of the necessary inputs, especially if they persist, will increase the incentives for manufacturers and retailers to bring peat-containing compost into England from elsewhere in the UK. Northern Ireland is the most likely source of peat-containing compost to be brought into England after the ban is implemented.

The use of horticultural peat across the UK has been in decline for the last 10 years. The Scottish and Welsh Governments have also signalled their intention to ban the sale of horticultural peat. The UK has been successful in producing peat-free alternatives – almost doubling its peat-free production in the past decade – but significant additional peat-free material will be needed in the coming years to replace the peat that is currently used.

Commenting on this latest report Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Public Affairs at the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) says: “The horticulture sector has been working hard to develop alternative professional solutions to using peat in growing media and is committed to becoming 100% peat free. Our members have already made great strides in transitioning away from the use of peat and the proportion of peat used in growing media is at an historic low for the industry (30% in bagged compost at retail and 51.7% in professional use).

“Defra has confirmed to the HTA that it is yet to determine the final policy and that the OIM’s use of 2028 was for the purposes of the report, and is not official policy. Government’s original ambition was for England to be peat free by 2030.

“We welcome the OIM’s conclusions around the importance of, and challenges associated with, ensuring access to sufficient alternatives to peat, and its acknowledgement that professional growers need to take an incremental approach to transitioning.

“The OIM report’s reference to a 2028 ban for the professional use of peat is based on Defra’s specified policy objective in its December 2021 consultation, and we await an announcement or decision on the final policy, which will be used for drafting the necessary legislation.

“We therefore reiterate that any government considering legislation to ban peat use should ensure they are ready to support the horticultural sector to develop and access responsibly-sourced alternatives which do not jeopardise the sustainability or price of the growing media, nor affect the quality of the crop produced. Facilitating research and development and knowledge exchange on best practice for growing peatfree is an absolutely essential part of this process. We need the Government’s support to ensure the transition away from peat enables the horticulture sector to play its vital role in contributing to environmental ambitions, while remaining competitive and sustainable as a business sector.”

Breathing space: a groundbreaker for tree roots

Several factors can stress trees, whatever their setting - parks, gardens, estates or streetscapes.

Nutrient shortage, surface compaction from footfall and waterlogging, created when water drains off hard surfaces and pathways, can all take their toll on tree health and ability to thrive. Popular measures to ease soil compaction include machines that loosen the ground around roots and beyond, then backfill the spaces created with nutrients and other materials.

Decompaction specialists, Terrain Aeration offer several solutions and work across various settings from back gardens, large estates to royal parks. Using its Terralift, the company can penetrate down to one metre depth, below the root system except major tap roots.

Breaking up soil around roots and beyond allows excess water to drain away to help stop anaerobic conditions and root rot. With its probe the Terralift injects dried seaweed, which helps keep fissures open. Backfilling probe holes with aggregate then provides a semi-permanent aeration/ventilation shaft.

“We aerate around roots using two-metre spacings,” Terrain Aeration managing director David Green explains, “mostly a metre inside and the same outside the canopy drip line, as this is where growing roots lie. Decompacting around roots and injecting air into the soil increases the percentage of oxygen uptake into the root system.”

Visitor attraction Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) found they had a need to call in the compaction experts post pandemic. The park showcases work by British and international artists including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Damien Hirst, some of which have stood there since the 18th-century parkland at Bretton Hall, Wakefield opened in 1977.

Popular with visitors and curators, especially in recent years, the Lower Park area of the 500-acre estate began to suffer from compaction due to footfall and the weight of sculptures, resulting in build-up of standing water. Hydrology consultants asked Terrain Aeration to inspect the waterlogged area with their deep aeration treatment system.

Mark Chesman, YSP head of estates and parks explains what happened next. “It is unusual for the area to be cleared, but the sculptures there were removed for conservation work and we seized the opportunity as part of a wider project. In all, it took two-and-a-half days and 4,000m 2 of land was treated.”

On site, Terralift kit hammers a hollow probe 1 m into the soil using a JCB road breaker gun.

“At depth, the ground is usually so compacted it needs the hammer to break through,” explains David at Terrain Aeration. “Compressed air is then released up to 20Bar (280psi) to fracture and fissure the soil, with the process repeated in 2 m spacings, to ensure fissures interlink.”

On the end of the air blast, dried seaweed is injected, which sticks to the fissure walls, expanding and contracting with moisture content in the soil and keeping the area ‘breathing’, he adds.

The 3.8 cm probe holes the machine created were backfilled with aggregate to provide a semi-permanent aeration/ventilation shaft and help keep aeration working. The YSP grounds team then overseeded the area to finish.

Limes, beeches and Atlas cedars received aeration treatment at the Yorkshire estate too. Breaking up soil around roots and beyond means excess water drains away from the roots to help stop anaerobic conditions and root rot. Other areas are due for treatment following this first round of work.

Like the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, parks and estates across Britain include historic and champion trees within their boundaries – decompaction can prove a deciding factor in future proofing their livelihood.

Darlington South Park, for example, is home to two of what are believed to be the largest giant Redwoods or multi-stemmed Sequoiadendron giganteum in England. They were planted in March 1863 to commemorate the marriage of the future King Edward VII to Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

Compaction had affected one of the specimens, with top roots visible and unilaterally reaching a long way from the tree and a steep hill down to a river on the other.

The tree was over-compensating to get all its energy. Darlington Council called in Terrain Aeration’s Tree Division to provide deep aeration of the area using Terralift machines.

“The key to successful treatment is usually to work along the dripline, one metre inside and one metre outside, where the rainwater drips from the canopy,” says David.

“Working either side of the dripline reaches beyond the growing roots, increases the percentage of oxygen intake and allows maximum drainage. Rainwater can penetrate deeper, resulting in a stronger root growth and a healthier canopy spread with an aerated soil structure and relief of compaction panning,” he adds. “On receiving significant rainfall, they pick up as they receive more water and nutrients.”

At South Park, the surrounding lawn was aerated with mycorrhizal funghi, which attach themselves to the tips of the tree roots, helping them break through hard soil and leaving the tree more energy to grow and further develop foliage.

“The soil was very hard and dry around the base,” explains David, “so some fractures were done near the tree. Water-storing polymer was injected into the area to help roots retain available water from rainfall.”

Compaction can impede growth of young trees too, says Dr Jon Banks, research lab manager for Bartlett Tree Experts, adding: “It limits root spread, as can old pathways. Over time, compaction pushes vital air out

of the soil space. Waterlogging prevents roots from respiring, creating drought-like symptoms as water cannot reach roots.

“About 90% of tree roots lie within the top 60 cm of soil. If that depth suffers compaction, water can collect in the layer above and rot roots. There could be problems deeper down as well, causing wider drainage problems.”

Soil types can also determine levels of compaction adds Jon, “sandy soils have large particles that can maintain air spaces, whereas clay, with its smaller particles, is more prone to compacting.

“Retaining healthy soils after treating decompaction relies on keeping the area free of footfall or heavy machinery if at all possible,” he continues.

“Maintenance really depends on biological activity within the soil. Earthworms and other soil organisms play a key role and if they are absent you may have major problems.”

Symptoms of compaction can be clear enough. “First signs are that the tree canopy is not as healthy as you’d hope for. Surrounding grass may be struggling and digging a hole in the ground near the tree may be difficult. You shouldn’t be getting a workout just to penetrate the ground,” he says.

Cases of deep compaction are not that common, Jon maintains. “Some systems go down several metres, which is not really necessary as only tap roots reach lower levels.

Bartlett use and recommend the Airspade machine for decompaction work. Originally developed by the military for excavating land mines, it has found ready application in the landscaping sector.

Any decompaction process will result in some root damage, however, he contends. “When we need to decompact, the major issue which needs alleviating is compaction.

“Obviously we never want to damage the tree but decompaction removes soil from small roots so we don’t recommend undertaking the process regularly or without good reason.

Prevention is preferable, perhaps applying mulch around trees and deterring people from walking over nearby ground. Mycorrhizae are important postdecompaction. “These can be applied or encouraged by careful soil management but our primary focus is the tree itself,” says Jon.

water into soil creates a slurry, which is more damaging to tree roots than air excavation.

Trees have the ability to recover quickly from invasive decompaction. “We measure tree health before and after Airspading to gauge the response to it. Turnover of fine roots can be as little as three days so a healthy tree will rejuvenate them quickly – anything up to three weeks, although some species tolerate the process more than others below.”

Timing is key, Jon notes. “Avoid the worst of drought times. Winter is better, when roots are dormant and the tree will suffer only a little negative impact. We always water well 24 hours before Airspading as it eases soil penetration.”

Ancient trees merit special consideration, Jon urges. A major current project is underway in Liverpool, where Bartlett are working with the local council and community on a national living monument - the 700year old Allerton Oak Tree.

“Take it slowly is our advice. Study the scale of the problem carefully, then apply procedures that are appropriate to what they are struggling with. “Slower is widely considered better when dealing with tree time, however, it is only appropriate when compaction has also occurred slowly.”

Decompaction can be a complex issue. On one project, Terrain Aeration discovered magnesium deficiency, coupled with low overall soil fertility around trees in a park.

“New technology allowed us to measure light transmission through the leaves to read chlorophyll levels,” David recalls. “The likely cause of the problem was that leaf litter always had been removed going back a century, taking with it natural nutrients from decaying leaves.

“Severe compaction of the surface around the tree had also set in. We injected a tree feed mix containing slow-release general nutrients and magnesium using the Terralift’s ability to inject granular material via its seaweed carrier, forcing it upwards into the rootzone.”

This also avoids losing the nutrients to the grass, which would occur with surface treatment. Two Terralift machines were used to complete the process. Advice from Terrain Aeration for those stress testing their trees is to send root samples from healthy and affected trees, as well as tip samples, in separate, labelled plastic bags to the Forestry Commission or an arboricultural advisor for full analysis. But ensure that a “a complete story” of the trees' circumstances and location, including relevant photographs is given to enable a thorough investigation.

Supporting career development in the sector

With UK unemployment at its lowest level since 1974 and businesses across many sectors desperately competing to attract the staff they need, leading landbased and environmental skills charity Lantra has taken on the challenge to help attract new talent, and retain existing expertise in the sector, with the launch of its NEW website.

Lantra wound down the provision of a careers information service in 2014, when central Government funding was cut, but now it’s using its own cash flow to re-establish its position as a trusted source for career information across a wide range of land-based industries.

The new website aims to help visitors navigate easily by answering three key questions…

1. What jobs could I do and what do they involve?

2. What training, qualifications and experience will I need?

3. Where can I get the training and qualifications I need?

The website offers details of more than 250 job roles across 12 industries with a selection of videos and case studies explaining what each job involves.

One misconception the sector faces is the view that the majority of jobs available are low-skilled, low paid and offer little opportunity to progress. Lantra will highlight the amazing new technologies and innovative working practices that are springing up in many industries, from GPS and drones to robotics and precision farming. All require higher levels of technical skills as well as the ability to understand data, solve complex problems and lead increasingly diverse teams.

Yorkshire School of Garden Design is awarded educator status

The Yorkshire School of Garden Design is celebrating the award of Educator Status by the prestigious Society of Garden Designers (SGD), less than a year after opening its doors to students.

The school, which launched in the summer of 2022 specifically to train designers for northern landscapes, has been awarded Educator Status in recognition of its high standards of garden design education and ‘best practice’ teaching. It is one of only two educational providers in the north of England to hold SGD accreditation. It offers a wide range of short courses as well as its flagship professional Diploma in Garden Design.

The school was founded by Alistair Baldwin who has an international reputation in garden design. Leading a garden design and landscape architecture practice in North Yorkshire he has spent 12 years delivering courses and lectures throughout the UK and the world, including at Leeds Beckett University. He has built a reputation for nurturing the talent of the future and believes that

the key to nurturing eminent designers of the future is providing them with access to educators who are professionals within their field and who can deliver practical experience and insight in not only garden design but also running a business.

Based at Harewood House near Leeds the school sits in more than 100 acres of parkland that were designed by the renowned 18th century landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

Launched in September 2022 and run by a carefully assembled team of tutors and contributors who are specialists in their field – from leading designers, show-garden aficionados and landscape contractors to horticulturists and head gardeners – the School equips students with all the design, technical, business and communication skills needed to design gardens to the highest standard. The courses are open to amateurs and professionals alike.

Tools at the ready

Spring is here and clients are calling upon your services. Now is the time to take stock of your tools. Paula Warman helps choose the best tools for your business and offers advice on whether to hire or buy

From a landscaping perspective deciding what equipment to buy is a minefield. In my experience the first question to ask yourself is what tools will make the job easier, saving on labour time.

Firstly identify the tools you need for your business based on what areas of landscaping you work in the most. Then take time to do a little online research to find the best product at the best price with reviews. Dare I say, You Tube and Tik Tok videos can offer good examples of tools in action! Then create a shortlist of the manufacturers that appeal and best places to buy, of course including local suppliers. Finally, ask for recommendations from your own industry network.

Demonstrations at events are great, too for seeing equipment in action. But bear in mind demos will probably showcase the item in a non-typical work environment. Hence looking at reviews and recommendations of people using it in a real-world example is a much better gauge of how the tool will fare.

In our landscaping business we often contact other contractors and manufacturers that we have good relationships with to get their take on the tools we are buying – particularly if it is a large, costly purchase. As an example, on buying a digger, we researched online and relied heavily on peer recommendations and reviews. Then we looked at the budget and considered whether to hire was a possible option.

Ultimately when looking at a costly item like a digger, the conundrum of whether to hire or buy will arise. I would urge you to run the figures for your business via your cashflow forecast. Work out how many times you hire a

digger – for us it was a case of almost every job, which was a cost to the business of around £180 + VAT per week (plus delivery in some cases). To purchase a digger, it would cost us £200 + VAT per month which worked out £50 + VAT a week. It was an easy decision as it would save us money, increase profit and we would have another asset in the business. Then I looked at the cashflow forecast to further check that we could cover the monthly cost and see the point where it would begin to make a profit.

But don't forget that when you own power tools and plant you need to budget for upkeep and maintenance. A digger needs servicing, repairs and tracking devices, as well as additional insurance costs for transporting it around. Ultimately you need to run the figures for any purchase you make to ensure they stack up positively for the business. The cashflow will also help you to identify when the right time is to invest in new equipment.

Don't forget there are some added benefits to investing in tools and plant for your business, such as less corporation tax – the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) allows a business to claim tax relief on purchases of certain assets up to a specified limit. Plus, the VAT you pay on the purchase will be offset against your next VAT bill. Speak to your accountant or tax advisor for more information and guidance on this.

The other tools of your trade to consider is business software and systems. When it comes to project management software, social media schedulers, CRM’s, and team management tools everything available online comes with free trial. My advice, take advantage of the free trials and block out a few days to test the ones that you have identified will make your business easier and are on your shortlist.

Managing landscapes through dry periods

Fears are growing that we will witness another drought this year after England saw its driest February in 30 years. The National Drought Group, which advises government on policy, are suggesting another hosepipe ban may need to be put in place, saying, “members are planning for the worst case scenario of another hot, dry summer and are managing water resources to reduce the risk of drought measures being required.’

According to reports, 63 per cent of rivers were below their normal levels for February and some reservoirs were considerably lower than anticipated. As landscape professionals and end users alike, we have to identify that water is not a limitless resource and should make every attempt to reduce our consumption as an individual and an organisation. We have to learn to adapt and water more efficiently to keep our planted environments bright, healthy and lush, we have to water more efficiently.

Irrigation manufacturers are stepping up to the challenge of climate change and are releasing new innovative products to help designers, installers and users achieve this possibility of efficient watering. From intelligent sprinkler nozzle design to non-blockage, sub-surface driplines and from cloud accessible controls to improvements in moisture sensing and interaction, the world of landscape irrigation has leapt forward.

When irrigation is essential, we should be clear on our efficient best practice with these considerations:

Water source – The majority of UK irrigation systems are supplied from mains water or ground water (boreholes, lakes etc) but does the project have any other untapped sources? Rainwater from roofs or hard surfaces can be used

if filtered and treated correctly but ‘it never rains when you need it!’ so consideration needs to be paid to correct sizing of any collection vessel or tank for rainwater.

Control – The less manual watering the better, efficient watering is better achieved by automatic control. The majority of modern irrigation controllers have the ability to monitor water flow and detect leaks, interact with sensors and permit remote access by Wi-Fi, 4G or LAN so they can be checked and managed remotely.

Moisture sensors – Technology in sensing the level of moisture within the soil has much improved. Sensors will interact directly with the irrigation controller, adjusting cycle time to achieve the optimum water applications – only replacing the moisture lost through evapotranspiration and plant use, instead of blanket watering.

Spray and drip Irrigation – Spray irrigation technology has moved forward leaps and bounds with highly efficient nozzles from a range of manufacturers but ultimately the most efficient way to water any plant is directly to the roots. Sub-surface dripline (where appropriate) now represents the most efficient method of applying water but has its drawbacks. As a contractor it is susceptible to damage at installation stage and also post completion when the client or landscaper needs to dig.

For landscapers and groundscare teams keeping outdoor spaces in full bloom against the tide of a constantly changing climate is challenging at the best of times. So now, more than ever, it’s time to learn to adapt to the changes and equip ourselves with the latest tools and study the technologies that will assist in our cause to keep landscapes maintained for all to enjoy.
