Because of the cost-cutting measures being imposed by the government the BBC has announced that it is to put its weather-forecasting contract out to tender after 93 years of Met Office bulletins.

The Met Office is the world’s best forecaster, it tells local authorities and the people responsible for keeping our roads and footpaths safe when and where to lay down grit or salt.

Like the BBC itself, The Met Office is a valuable national treasure, instead of being attacked they both should be encouraged and protected.

Forty nine BALI members out of 108 entries received have won awards in this year’s prestigious BALI National Landscape Awards in association with Horticulture Week and headline sponsors

The Principal Award, Special Award and the coveted Grand Award will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London on Friday 4th December - tickets for the ceremony are going fast.

The recession may be officially over but councils are still having their budgets cut leaving little left for our public parks, gardens, and open spaces, yet public awareness of the importance of green space especially in our cities has never been greater. Carol Dutton asks is our green infrastructure at risk (p24).

Just in case you have not noticed it’s getting colder and many are planning now for the arrival of winter (p43). Despite the arrival of colder nights looking out over my own garden there are still some very healthy plants in the wrong place (p46).

Last weekend I visited Devonshire Road Market in Chiswick London and discovered that artificial grass company Lazy Lawn had turned the road green.

“We use the SISIS SSS1000 – a tractor mounted sweeper which can be pulled by any machine. There are no tools required for the adjustment of the brush or the angle of the draw bar and to make storage easy the draw bar lifts to an upright position. With an aluminium hopper with stainless steel mesh, any infill that is collected when using the machine is returned back down to the surface leaving it free from contamination of debris.

“We get a lot of debris on the pitch after concerts and because we have so many children playing on the pitch we find a lot of bottle tops and other things like that which contaminate the pitch. We use the SSS1000 twice a week to keep the surface nice and clean and it stops the actual crumb from getting contaminated.”

As well as the SISIS SSS1000, Joe uses the SISIS Twinplay tractor mounted implement frame, which can be fitted with several implements for the maintenance of synthetic surfaces.

He attaches the SISIS straight brush and the SISIS Zig Zag brush to even out the rubber crumb before attaching the SISIS Flexicomb. The Flexicomb maintains infill levels at a constant depth to give a consistent playing characteristic and Joe believes it is perfect for the surface at the Falkirk Stadium.

National Conifer Week Low maintenance, attractive forms and all year round colour are just a few of the benefits that the conifer can bring to the garden.

Such is its popularity across the nation, the conifer has been attributed its own week as well as being the Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) Plant of the Month for October.

National Conifer Week, organised by the British Conifer Group (BCG), takes place on Saturday 26 September running until Saturday 3 October. Retailers are encouraged to inspire their customers upon the many benefits of growing conifers in the garden.

If not already a feature of a garden, a conifer can regularly be found to be one’s neighbour. Whether planted in a container on a balcony, in a domestic garden or featured in acres of grounds, conifers can work as a backdrop, standalone, or in a border with other plants. They are extremely versatile, coming in an amazingly diverse range of shades, textures, shapes and sizes.
