Benefits from Urban Trees The forthcoming Trees, People and the Built Environment 3 (TPBE3) conference will explore the benefits of urban trees with a focus on health and transport. The advantages of trees within urban spaces has been proven, by research, to produce a positive impact and has become an important subject for a diverse group of professionals.

A highly respected UK based architect, Sue James, explains: “If we are to have more urban trees and properly benefit from them, it’s vital that we embrace a cross-sector, cross-disciplinary approach for all built environment professionals including health professionals, civil engineers, architects and landscapers.”

How we design and manage our towns and cities can have a major impact on individuals’ mental and physical health.

There is strong evidence to support the value of green infrastructure especially trees and green space in delivering measurable benefits to human health.

Responsibility for many health issues now lies with local authorities. Dr Ann Marie Connolly, Public Health England’s (PHE) Deputy Director, Health Equity & Mental Health, Health & Wellbeing, is leading a session which will illustrate significant issues relating to health benefits from urban trees.

Explaining the importance of her session at TPBE3, Dr Connolly said: “Last autumn I attended an event at University College London called The Big Meet. It was organised by one of TPBE3’s Conference Partners, the Place Alliance, and the delegates were all interested in urban tree development that focused on health. A forester gave such creative examples of tree use in cities that he inspired us all. So, it is fitting that I should now play a part in inspiring others in Birmingham.”

Dr Matilda van den Bosch, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia, Canada, will be exploring ‘Healthy Trees, Healthy People’ and explains: “With a changing disease scenario and increased prevalence of chronic, lifestylerelated disorders, structural, environmental and healthpromoting investments are required. From this perspective, trees and urban green spaces can be considered as efficient tools for promoting healthy behaviours, encouraging physical activity and cross cultural social interactions” There are huge inequalities that exist between place quality and health outcomes with implications for how well and how long people live. Eagles number one choice Bruce Elliot, head of grounds and estates at Crystal Palace FC, has revealed that Limagrain’s MM60 is his preferred choice of winter sports grass seed.

It is safe to say that Crystal Palace have acquired an extremely experienced groundsman in Bruce. Having started his professional career at Fulham FC, Bruce went on to work for Tottenham FC, Millwall FC and Reading FC before returning for a second spell as head groundsman at Fulham.

Proud to play their part

Green-tech has supplied the landscaping materials used in a memorial to honour the many servicemen of World War II who passed through the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Burscough, known as HMS Ringtail.

HMS Ringtail is an old World War Two airfield in Lancashire. It was a busy military base that was closed for flying in 1946 but kept under the military status of care and maintenance and used as an engine holding and repair unit.

In 2004 a sandstone memorial was unveiled at the side of the town’s Tollgate Road and Pippin Street roundabout to honour the servicemen. An Armistice Day ceremony was held at this location each year on 11th November.

Recently a new Ringtail retail park has been built on land that was formerly HMS Ringtail. A new Booths Supermarket has been built on the Park and has been designed to resemble a WW2 aircraft hangar.

The location of the original memorial was deemed to be an unsafe venue due to this development and outside the supermarket a new memorial garden has been created. The existing monument has been moved into this, along with a new and unique life size bronze sculpture of a WW2 Navy Air Man. Cheshire based Hulton Landscapes secured the contract to construct the new memorial garden and ensure the existing memorial was removed and placed at its new location.

Historical churches - heart of the community Historical churches around the country are being given a new lease of life, thanks to a restoration process called “re-ordering”.

One of the south east’s largest and most respected firms of Architects, Clague, is re-ordering historical and listed churches, giving them a new sustainable use, allowing them to remain or even return to the heart of the community.

The process of re-ordering involves renovations and restorations of varying degrees – from major structural repairs, to removing pews and replacing with seats which are more accessible, updating interiors and installing heating and kitchen facilities. Disabled access is also added in some cases - giving the churches not only a new lease of life but new sustainable uses for the benefit of the local community.

One church benefitting from Clague’s expertise is a medieval Grade I listed building in Kingsnorth, near Ashford in Kent. St. Michael and All Angels Church dates from the late fourteenth century, and Clague delivered a sympathetic repair and restoration of the tower masonry, turret roofs window stonework. The team designed and built a new extension to provide much needed modern facilities as well as carrying out the essential reordering of the interior of the church itself.

Design graduate set to compete A former Writtle University College student is leading one of five hopeful teams whose design will be judged in the APL (Association of Professional Landscapers) Show Garden competition at the 50th anniversary of BBC Gardeners’ World Live event in June.

James Lanwarne, Director of Lanwarne Landscapes (Garden Design & Construction of the Finest Quality) studied Garden Design at Writtle to expand the repertoire of his business.

Commenting on his learning experience, James said: “Studying at Writtle completely transformed my business, my career and my life.”

In June 2016, just five years after graduating, James and his team, including Landscaping Designer Martin Lines, entered their design ‘Fire and Ice’ into the Beautiful Borders category at BBC Gardeners’ World Live. The garden was a huge success and made a big impression on visitors and judges, and BBC Gardeners World celebrities including Monty Don, Joe Swift, Carol Klein, James Alexander Sinclair, Jim Buttress (The Queens Gardener) and Matt Biggs (BBC Gardeners World Question Time, Radio 4) On winning ‘Gold’ and ‘Best Border in Show’, James commented: “We really weren’t expecting the design to attract so much attention. We were a highlight of the show, the impact was immense and way more than I ever expected.”

The win gave the team the confidence and inspiration to enter this year’s APL Show Garden competition which asked designers to create inspirational, aspirational and achievable gardens within a space up to 50 metres square.

said: “This garden is designed for a couple in their early thirties, they work long hours in the City and have an active social life. A relaxing space is essential after a hard day’s work, including an outdoor dining area, and the garden must have a clean and contemporary feel.”

A hexagonal shape runs throughout the design, including the paving tiles and fire pit, and subtly makes reference to honeycomb. Materials such as black slate cladding and blue black granite complement timber painted in shades of black ash, raspberry and stone grey.

The design also incorporates the clients’ passion for the conservation of bees and butterflies, as Martin explains: “We chose plants specifically to attract bees, butterflies and other insects in shades of pinks, whites and blues, and the living picture is planted with specially grown moss. Some of the timber posts also have bee and insect houses drilled into them and the bubble fountains are more than just a water feature, they are safe places for the bees and insects to drink from.” www.writtle.ac.uk/courses for more information.

Equitable representation, and major opportunities – is this how landscaping grows?

Ffion Llwyd-Jones reports The United Kingdom rates only 20th in the world (GGGR, 2016) in gender equality, yet opportunities for women in the landscaping industry are worlds away from any preconceived images of ‘ladies who lunch’. In the month that saw global celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), we chatted with female landscapers, designers and educators to find out about the challenges, suggested pathways and opportunities, and the rewards of the industry.

FROM TAPE MEASURES TO VERBAL ABUSE ‘I remember measuring a 22-acre site with sixty-metre tape measures and an ordnance map – my toes still curl with embarrassment at the thought,’ admits Louisa Bell of The Lovely Garden Services and winner of a BALI National Landscape Award 2016, describing a basic skill challenge in the early part of her career. She continues: ‘I went to a lecture

a wet shrub with a tape measure… from that day on, I employed a professional surveyor for every site – however small the garden.’

For Maria Montague (Montague Landscaping) her biggest challenge came after completing design at university. She needed construction knowledge ‘to be able to design gardens that could be built’, and worked as a landscape labourer with Ian Gray Landscapes, and soon became team leader. ’Men worked under my instruction – probably the biggest challenge I faced through the years,’ says Maria.

‘Men in their 40’s, doing the same job as when they started out their working life and now having a female, younger than them, giving them instructions. I had tools and materials thrown at me, verbal abuse on site and even men walking off when asked to do something. It took a few years to gain the confidence and not take things so personally, and with the encouragement and support from Ian, I eventually learned to just not worry about it.’ Maria adds that it’s hard to say if those challenges are still in the industry in 2017, adding: ‘There probably will still be employees that could try to intimidate and bully a young female in the construction work place, but hopefully their bosses would be as supportive as Ian was to me and make sure they learnt their value and worth just as much as the male employees.’ That confidence in abilities and worth was a challenge for Lizzie Tulip, owner of her eponymous garden design company in Yorkshire. As she points out: ‘I had to have confidence in my ideas and not be afraid to take risks. Over the years, I realised that these risks often create far more original designs, but keeping true to basic design principles is also key. We are privileged to be working with some wonderful clients who respect our views and are looking for original designs.’

While the industry is far less gender specific than others, some preconceptions are still around – such as women designers are all ‘ladies that lunch’ comments Louisa. She adds: ‘Like all professions, there are fully clued-up women – ones who understand the civil engineering of a project – and

the ones who think design is about plants and are good at drawing nice pictures.’ Louisa notes that contractors have little respect for a designer who marks up a plan with ‘might be one step here – perhaps two…’ She adds: ‘The job is cold and muddy at times. You need to work harder to gain respect from builders and have to stand your ground when the clients want their ‘builders’ to lay patios and landscape sites. Most landscapers are helpful and realise we all need to work together. I would advise any woman wanting a career change to undertake a professional landscape course with an accredited college.’

PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS While a love of plants and of being outdoors may be initial attractors to the landscape industry, many women echo Louisa’s advice about formal courses, recognising that education can open up the myriad possibilities in the industry.

Maria, who loves being outside and didn’t want to work solely in an office environment, chose the university path. She explains: ‘I’d been interested in construction as a youngster, and when I was very young wanted to be a bricklayer or carpenter. When I finished college, I visited

universities that dealt with outdoor and indoor studies.

As soon as I walked into the grounds of Writtle University College in Essex, I knew it was the place for me. I completed a BSc (Hons) in Landscape and Garden Design. The course covered everything from law, to design, science, construction, and horticulture, and gave me such an insight into many areas I could pursue.’

Never crawl underneath a wet shrub with a tape measure While a love of plants, working for herself, and fitting in work around a young family attracted Hannah to the landscape industry, she also believes in education, suggesting ‘doing one of the top courses in Landscape design or Landscape architecture, and then working with a well known studio for experience.’

twenty years.’ However, that idea changed: ‘I soon found out that plants weren’t the guiding principle in landscape design. Civil engineering was a far more important factor!’

There has always been a strong representation of women in Landscape Architecture from the earliest days, confirms Bridget Snaith, Senior Lecturer Landscape Architecture at University of East London (UEL). ‘Leading figures such as Dame Sylvia Crowe and Brenda Colvin were instrumental in establishing the profession in the UK, ‘ she says. ‘At UEL, women are just over half of applicants and students on the programme.’

And Caroline Wright who is Senior lecturer in Horticulture at Nottingham Trent University, confirms that although the ratio of women taking horticultural courses at both Further education and Higher education levels does fluctuate each year, there is, on average, a fairly even split between male and female students.

Landscape’s impact on a more exciting urban environment is attracting younger woman, comments Sarah Seery, Horticulture and Landscaping Head of School at Capel Manor. ‘We encourage young women to be ‘hands-on’. If you learn how to lay a patio, lay a deck,

it gives credibility whether design or planning. If you’ve learned hard landscaping skills, you’re in better position to understand what your landscaper is going to do. If someone is technically trained, they understand the principles, and provide good design plans.’

Sarah also notes that while Level 1 and Level 2 courses have a wide difference in male/female ratio (20 men versus 3 women), the Level 3 courses (more advanced, more technical) have a proportion is nearer 50/50. She adds: ‘Many of those women are career changers – police officers, lawyers, stay-at-home mums. Women see that urban green spaces need people: how you engage people, deal with public and community groups. Women can see such roles use transferable skills.’ Caroline agrees that ‘horticulture attracts a high percentage of mature learners and at least 75% of the female learners are mature students.’ She adds: ‘Consistently, female learners achieve higher grades on average than male learners, particularly at Further Education level. In my opinion, female learners are extremely highly motivated and in particular the mature female students are very skilled in time management, which enables them to achieve.’

The mature student route was one taken

by Jill Walmsley of Walmsley Designs. As she explains: ‘After moving (downsizing) to Winchester, I completed an RHS course at Sparsholt College, started a creative gardening maintenance business, then did a foundation degree in garden design, followed by a BSc (Hons) that took five years.’

The degree was part-time, so she could work while completing it. Jill says: ‘The science side was brilliant, being about sustainability and organics, while the environmental information was the most awakening. And Louisa Bell that is hard to get across to clients, but that’s our mission. We always design in a compost bin, or look for sustainable materials in landscaping. That’s the influence of the education.’

Noting the need within the industry to raise the pay for what is highly skilled work, Jill adds: ‘The only way that people are going to get better paid in horticulture and gardening is if they’re better qualified, and can prove the benefit to the client of a better education.’ Caroline’s advice is that anyone considering horticulture as a career should do it as soon as possible. She says: ‘So many mature students ask why they didn’t it when they were younger… there are many exciting and challenging opportunities, many of which can be done part time to fit around family life. For anyone

considering a career change, don’t forget that all of your previous career experience has valuable transferable skills that will give you a boost in your new direction.’

Louisa adds that continuous improvement is important, together with being recognised for industry awards. She says: ‘The awards are important to clients – they like to tell their friends – and I think new clients are always happy their designer has been recognised. The BALI awards seem to recognise build and design excellence – the judges visit the sites and they have the expertise to recognise the problems a designer has overcome.’ She adds that the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) is a continuous presence in her professional life, with conferences, awards, publications and Designer Development Days.

MANY AND DIVERSE OPPORTUNITIES Female graduates go on to diverse occupations within the industry.

Caroline notes internships at Kew gardens, running community gardens, working for the NHS in social and therapeutic settings, becoming garden designers, working for historic gardens open to the public, doing nursery work, and horticultural science and technology.

She adds: ‘Landscape architecture is a wide-ranging practice, and offers many different opportunities for women interested in the design and construction sector. It is a profession where women are usually equitably represented in the workplace, and women are recognised as leaders. get a lot of nice feedback. That’s the best thing – how it makes people feel.’’ Lizzie agrees the industry is a rewarding one: ‘The best opportunities come with good clients. Listening to the client and the client listening to you – a two-way mutual respect creates the strongest designs. And she adds: ‘Don’t let gender be an issue and don’t hide behind men to make decisions for you.’ For women entering the industry, Hannah’s advice is simple: ‘Go for it’. She adds: ‘You will work with a lot of men and get wet and cold, but it’s a fabulous career. I still can’t think of anything I would rather do.’ And Maria believes the industry is open to any individual determined to succeed: ‘I would say to any woman thinking of going into this industry, never give up when you find it hard. Because you will find it hard at times and there will be days when you wonder why you ever started down this road, but do persevere as the rewards will always outweigh the struggles.’

She adds: ‘The stereotypical image for females would be as horticulturists or garden designers, but I see no reason why woman can’t enter every area of landscaping and achieve just as much as a man. The world is more aware of sexism in the workplace, and the younger generations are brought up with a greater acceptance of different groups of people doing different types of work, which is a great thing and can only help build a more diverse future for all.’

Storm Doris was named on the 21 February, as yellow and amber warnings for wind, snow and rain were issued by the Met Office.

There’s a new truck in town The new Volkswagen Amarok, with its new 3-litre V6 engine is the most powerful, torquey and fastest pickup on the market. The Landscaper’s Liam Campbell tested the new top-of-the-range Aventura spec Amarok at the UK launch event

LIAM CAMPBELL AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR Volkswagen has taken the mid-life fresh to introduce a number of new technologies but, most importantly, to replace the 2-litre unit which received criticism for its poor performance under heavy loads. One tonne pickups around the world require large displacements for strenuous work, and the new V6 fits the bill perfectly.

INTERIOR The dashboard has been completely redesigned and, as well as being more stylish, is also more ergonomic and functional, with a large lidded central cubby and glovebox, and number of useful storage spaces for loose change, wallets and phones. Visibility is slightly restricted, however, due to the relatively low seating position and high windscreen and windows.

The Volkswagen Amarok is seen very much as a ‘luxury pickup’, so it’s no surprise then that even the entry-level Startline models are fitted with a lot of equipment. The Aventura is the Amarok’s flagship trim level, and sits above the Startline, Trendline and Highline.

Volkswagen has fitted the Amarok with what is easily the sector’s most comfortable seating. The eight-way electrically adjustable ‘ergocomfort’ seats for the driver and front-seat passenger has even been accredited by the German ‘Healthy Back Campaign’.

Other standard features include dual-zone climate control, cruise control, ‘ParkPilot’ automatic parking system, featuring front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.

Infotainment is provided by Volkswagen’s MIB infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen display, radio and new technology including the option of navigation, Guide & Inform, Car-Net and App-Connect

systems. Bluetooth and DAB digital radio are also now standard features.

LOADING AND TOWING The Amarok has always performed fairly well at the business end. The load area measures 1,555mm long by 1,620mm wide (1,220mm between the wheelarches) and has high 508mm side walls, making it one of the largest load beds in its class.

The standard tailgate sits just 780mm from the ground.

When folded flat, it’s able to support weights of up to 200kg and serve as a load bed extension. In terms of weights, the Amarok is capable of carrying up to around 1,090kg and there is a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes.

There is a durable load compartment protective covering, four lashing rings and a 12v power socket to charge tools and equipment included as standard.

PERFORMANCE, RIDE AND HANDLING Of course, the big news for the Volkswagen Amarok’s 2016 update is the new 3.0-litre TDi V6 engine. It’s surprisingly quiet and refined when idling but, as expected, has a deep

roar during heavy acceleration.

It’s unbelievably quick and, on the highest power rating, reaches 62mph from standstill in just 7.9 seconds – making it almost three seconds quicker than the Ford Ranger Wildtrak. There are three power ratings of 160hp, 201hp and 221hp, with the latter having a maximum torque output of 550Nm. As with the previous generation, there is a choice between a six-speed manual and an eight-speed DSG automatic transmission.

The Volkswagen Amarok is also comfortable to drive, with very little body roll in the corners, a quiet and refined cab and light but responsive steering. The new engine does have its down sides, however, returning just 37.2mpg on the combined cycles at a time when some pickups are offering mid-40’s.

OFF-ROAD While the Volkswagen Amarok has always been a smooth and capable performer on the road, the same cannot be said for its off-road handling. With a kerb weight of over 2.1 tonnes, it’s one of the heaviest vehicles in its class and it has a very poor ground clearance of just 192mm, 500mm wading depth and approach and departure angles of just 28 and 24-degrees.

Volkswagen’s 4Motion is available as a permanent or selectable system. The selectable has three settings (2Hi, 4Hi and 4Low) and both systems have an electronic diff-lock and are complemented by the electronic stability programme (ESP), hill hold assist (HHA) and hill descent control (HDC) to ease Amarok down steep descents.

New team for East Midlands Complete Weed Control has announced Conor Flynn as its newest franchisee to operate in the East Midlands.

Conor is the latest to join Complete Weed Control and after working with cars for the majority of his working career, he decided that it was time for a change of direction. When the opportunity arose to join Complete Weed Control he decided to learn more about the company, which ultimately played a major factor in his decision to alter his career path.

Conference plans announced The Amenity Forum conference and associated exhibition has become a must attend event for all involved or with an interest in weed, pest and disease management. The Forum has announced that in 2017, it will take place on Thursday, October 12th, at the Pirelli Stadium, Burton on Trent.

The conference will be entitled ‘Keeping Britain Moving’ and speakers will address the key issues in the sector.

Speakers include John Parker, who works for Transport for London, who will address the issue of keeping our cities moving. Colin Mumford from Bayer will speak on the ‘appliance of science’ and Professor Alan Gange will take a specific look at biological control linked to his research programme at Royal Holloway University of London.

More targeted spray All bottles of the barrier acting, total herbicide, Pistol from Bayer, will now be supplied with two low drift sprayer nozzles and a stewardship checklist attached.

The addition of the low drift nozzles forms part of the new authorisation for Pistol which was officially reregistered by the Chemicals Regulation Division (CRD) under the new registration MAPP17451 in 2016.

The new authorisation confirms that Pistol is registered through to 2020. Bayer is already in the process of relabelling bottles and distributors have until the end of February 2017 to sell any remaining ‘old label’ stock.

However, any individuals purchasing these products will have until February 2018 to use their stocks.

“The new nozzles will mean that amenity professionals using Pistol will have a more targeted spray pattern and chemical drift will be minimised, so the product only affects the target area and there is less wastage,” says Dr Colin Mumford of the Bayer Turf Solutions Team.

“As an independent organisation, the Amenity Forum fully supports product stewardship and the importance of choosing the correct nozzle so that the product is applied exactly where needed for effective and economic impact,” adds independent chairman of the Amenity Forum, Professor John Moverley OBE. “Pistol is an essential product for the control of annual and perennial weeds and grasses on soft and gravel surfaces. And without such updates to the packaging, we could see even more products removed from the market, so we aim to ensure that our products are stewarded correctly and we always encourage best

practice,” says Colin.

A key benefit of Pistol is that it has a long lasting, systemic and residual mode of action. Once it is applied, its effectiveness will continue, as a barrier is created on the upper profile of the soil that will remain throughout the season, controlling germinating weeds and preventing their establishment.

Grey squirrel control “top priority” An oral contraceptive for grey squirrels could be the only chance future generations of people will have to enjoy the benefits of fully mature English oaks and other broadleaved trees in our UK towns and countryside, says the Royal Forestry Society (RFS).

The education charity warns that current populations of grey squirrel are reaching proportions which threaten the survival of some of our most loved species of trees. While the new contraceptive offers a very real opportunity to reverse the tide of damage, it needs the government and forestry sector to get behind a long term commitment to fund the five-year research programme required.

RFS Chief Executive Simon Lloyd explains grey squirrels represent the greatest threat to the health of broadleaved trees but currently, woodland owners can only trap and shoot the pest, methods which are not always wholly effective.

“Without more effective controls, grey squirrels will continue to strip bark of many broadleaves, including the iconic English oak, when they are young,” he says. “This exposes trees to stress and disease, causes irretrievable damage and can kill them.

The cost of damage by grey squirrels to trees is conservatively estimated at £14 million a year.

“Prior to the introduction of the grey squirrels by the Victorians, broadleaved trees were able to grow to a size and girth that delivered the timber that built our historic Navies, created some of our oldest buildings and continue to live on in much prized furniture and craftsmanship.

“If more recently planted trees no longer reach their full potential it will have a measurable impact, both of the UK’s ability to grow hardwood timber, but also on the landscape for generations to come.”

News that research into a grey squirrel oral contraceptive by the government’s Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) in York has received an initial £39,000 investment from Defra, is therefore welcome, says Mr Lloyd.

A long lasting species-specific oral contraceptive would be far easier to administer than single-dose injectable immuno-contraceptives. However, a longer term commitment to a five-year test programme is required to look at dosage, at longevity of the dose and at how to administer the oral contraceptive to be species specific via bait-lacing in feeders or hoppers which only the grey squirrel will be clever enough to access. Funding for a pilot progamme will also be required.

Simon Lloyd says: “ It is pointless to plant oak and other

broadleaved species where they are vulnerable to grey squirrel damage without a rigorous and sustained control programme. There is a high risk they will never take their place as a thing of beauty in the landscape or a valued source of high quality timber.

“We believe that oral contraceptives will be most effective when combined with trapping and shooting. Funding research into fertility control must become a top priority for government and the forestry sector.”

There are an estimated 3.5million grey squirrels in the UK. Scientists estimate around £1m will be needed to carry out a five-year oral contraceptive test programme and believe the oral contraceptive would cause populations to fall by around 90% over a few years. As a concept, it has received the backing of Prince of Wales. £100,000 has already been raised by members of the Squirrel Accord, of which the RFS is a leading member, towards further research.

Chipping the Christmas trees A Christmas tree ‘chipping’ scheme raised over £6K for a worthy cause, helped by a GreenMech QuadChip 160.

Dorothy House, a charity providing care and support to people with life-limiting illnesses, recently teamed up with horticultural students from Wiltshire College in a Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme. In return for a donation, 131 trees were picked up by volunteers and delivered to the college in Lackham near Chippenham, where students studying landbased courses made light work of chipping the trees with a GreenMech QuadChip 160 woodchipper.

Bill Johnston, wood chipping specialist from local GreenMech dealer T H White, brought the QuadChip 160 to the campus to aid with the processing and recycling of the collected trees. Commenting on the day, Bill said, “I thoroughly enjoyed demonstrating the safe use of the chipper and providing the students with information and hands-on experience so that they were able to recycle the trees. The students all enjoyed the opportunity to use the chipper, giving them the chance to enhance their skills and increase their employability.” The chippings produced were then used on the rhododendrons and azaleas around the college grounds.

£1.7billion, 43,000 rural jobs The Royal Forestry Society (RFS) was among organisations which gave written and oral evidence to the Efra Forestry in England Inquiry into the role of Defra in supporting a thriving forest economy and

environment. The Inquiry is due to report this spring.

The forestry sector already contributes around £1.7billion a year to the economy and supports around 43,000 rural jobs, as well as delivering substantial environmental and social benefits. If government woodland creation and management targets are met, the impact of forestry on the rural economy and environment could be much greater. Brexit creates a unique opportunity to meet this challenge. The RFS are hoping that the inquiry will recommend a radical rethink on woodland creation to encourage a significantly higher rate of new planting for timber and amenity woodlands plus a simplification for the Countryside Stewardship/grant process to encourage engagement among foresters.

Tree team bridges the gap A team from national tree relocation, supply and planting specialist Glendale Civic Trees was called upon when three large trees needed relocating to enable a new railway bridge to be installed.

Using the largest tractor mounted tree spade in the UK, three Sequoiadendron gigantium Wellingtonia were moved so infrastructure specialist J.Murphy & Sons Limited (Murphy) could replace the bridge near Mauldeth Road Station in Manchester.

The trees were situated in Ladybarn Park in the exact spot where a crane needed to be positioned to remove the old bridge and install its replacement.

Glendale’s new North West-based arboriculture enterprise was originally approached to relocate the trees, estimated to be between 15 – 20 years in age, but due to their size, semimature tree specialist Civic Treeswas brought on-board to move them to the other side of the park.

Once the relocation was complete the crane was able to lift out the old bridge, which had reached the end of its useable life, and replace it with a new one.

Civic Trees, told The Landscaper, “The time constraints of the project meant we needed to act quickly to relocate the trees, which combined with wet ground and rather tight site access meant somewhat challenging conditions. In the end it took our team just two days to relocate the three trees.

“Tree pads were placed around the relocation site by the Murphy team to prevent the tree spade churning up the ground, and the team also ensured surrounding paths were cleared and the ground was reinstated.

“It was important to take good care of the trees throughout the process, particularly as they’re an interesting species with a lot of history having first been brought into the UK from California in the 1850s by plant collector William Lobb.”

Grafter chassis has been specified with a purpose designed tipping body that incorporates a wood chipper and tooling pod, as well as a range of working lights at both the rear of the truck and above the tooling pod for night-time work.

Wonky, lopsided, corroded bollard lights are a blot on the landscape and can often be seen around the best resort hotels and public spaces. By Martin Bennett The cost to replace them with new bollards utilising the latest LED technology need not be expensive.

Not so long ago the only bollard lights available were crazy-expensive, often over £500 each, and were made to order with a wait of 6 weeks or more. Today many are available from reputable companies, stocked in depth and with a next day delivery option.

Bollard lighting Guide: Mounting methods: Flange Base, Root Mount, In Ground “Flange” – The base has an integral flange with 4 holes for bolting to a flat, hard secure surface. Unsuitable for grassed areas or gravel drives; easily damaged and prone to vandalism or theft.

“Root Mount” – Often confused with “in ground”; the bollard is supplied with “L” shaped threaded rods. The rods are inserted into wet concrete and threaded through the flange or internal base mount holes. When the concrete is set, nuts are tightened on the threaded part to secure the bollard.

“In Ground” – The best and most secure option but a little more expensive. Simply, the Bollard is 40cm longer than the required surface height and is concreted or secured with stones into a prepared hole. Ideal for lawns, gravel areas, and pathways, especially at the construction stage of a new development.

Much stronger and more vandal and thief resistant than the other mounting methods.

For many years, Son & Metal Halide were the only choices for a strong light source for Bollard illumination. Normal halogen lamps simply did not provide sufficient light output. Today LED lamps

have been developed that have equivalent or more lumen output. For example a 20 watt “COB” LED lamp has a light output equivalent to 200 watts (Halogen) with the advantages of either a warm white or daylight white colour. There is no expensive control gear to replace and in the unlikely event of a lamp failure it is just a simple replacement, no electrician required!

LED lights are also suitable for use with remote PIRs as there is no warm up time plus they also work well with Photocell control.

Running costs are also very low; a 20 watt lamp on all night for a year (approx. 5000 hours) will only cost £15.00 (based on 15p per kilowatt hour) To sum up, if you want to smarten up and be environmentally friendly, install new Bollard lights using LED lamps! Those “wonky” bollards are hurting your reputation!

Reintroducing Victorian splendour

Firestone Buildings Products’ PondGard EPDM lining has been used to refurbish the ‘Horseshoe Pond’ at Gunnersbury Park in West London as part of a significant improvement programme at the 75 hectare, Grade II listed landscape.

Purchased for the nation from the Rothschild family, Gunnersbury Park is now jointly managed by Ealing and Hounslow borough councils. Thanks to two Lottery Heritage Fund grants, the councils have embarked on a major scheme to overhaul the museum on site and make significant improvements to the Park, which includes restoration of some of its historic buildings and its two ponds.

Located in front of the Park’s historic orangery, the Victorian Horseshoe Pond was partially infilled in the 1960s, at which time the remaining portion was modified with concrete additions to create a modern water feature. This had subsequently fallen out of use and out of fashion and the restoration project has involved de-silting, draining and excavating the pond, removing the 1960s additions and reprofiling the pond to return it to its original appearance.

New footings and a new blockwork wall have been introduced in addition to the existing Victorian wall and contractor, Ivel Aquatics, excavated the pond to the required depth, compacting the clay soil at the base. The Ivel Aquatics team then laid a 300g separation and filter geotextile before installing the Firestone PondGard EPDM

lining membrane. The 1mm thick membrane was cut into sections and laid into the pond cavity with a 150mm overlap on each section, which was joined using Firestone’s QuickSeam self-adhesive tape. The lining was taken up the sides of the pond and secured in place by coping stones placed around the perimeter.

An additional layer of geotextile was then laid onto the PondGard membrane followed by a surcharge of clay soil, which both anchored the lining in place and obscured it from view. The pond area was then landscaped and filled with water.

The project has now been completed and the boating pond located near the main entrance to the Park has also been upgraded, with a new clay bund installed as a temporary measure to reinforce the surrounding concrete and pond edge to stabilise the structure and prevent water loss.

Councillor Corinna Smart, Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for public health and leisure said: “The transformation of Gunnersbury Park will provide a vital local resource for leisure, culture and relaxation. Cleaning for Patios, Paving and Outdoor Wooden Structures The changeable British climate means that patio and paving slabs are subjected to a wide range of tough conditions. During the cold winter months, freeze / thaw cycles can cause physical damage to porous stone slabs and mortar joints. As the weather stays wet but continues to warm up during the spring, mould and algae growth becomes a problem.

Wood can suffer even more damage. Softwoods can be affected by the same mould and algae issues as patio and paving slabs. The absorbent nature of most woods can lead to warping if exposed to too much moisture.

They can also be at further risk from rot, fungal attack and woodworm infestation. These problems not only make wood look tired and dirty but can cause wooden structures to become unstable.

When patios or wooden structures become dirty or degraded, there are a couple of common cleaning methods most people resort to. The first is to use a pressure washer and the second is to use an acidic cleaner.

Pressure washing can produce visually impressive results in a short space of time but can be very destructive in the long term. Every time a patio is pressure washed, the surface of the stone or concrete is eroded and the joints between the slabs can be completely destroyed in a single wash. Wood can also be irreparably damaged by aggressive high-pressure spraying that can cause splits and open up the surface, making it even more porous.

Acidic cleaners work by aggressively attacking and dissolving the top surface of the underlying material that they are applied to. If left for long enough, they can successfully remove surface mould and algae from patio slabs but can leave rust coloured marks or stains on certain patio materials. Wood can also be severely affected by repeated acid washes. The acid strips the top layer of the wood. This not only creates a patchy and rough look but can also make the wood more porous.

Despite their aggressive nature, neither pressure washing nor acidic cleaners can deal with the penetrative lichen growth that occurs over time on patio slabs. The roots of lichens are ingrained in the pores of the slab and >

hardscaper very little can be done to remove them once they are there.

These cleaning methods also do nothing to protect wood and patios from the effects of moisture penetration, such as freeze / thaw damage and warping.

The best way to keep wood and patio materials looking good for a long period of time is to prevent degradation and mould growth from occurring in the first place.

Treating them with a long lasting silicone cream emulsion, such as Safeguard Europe’s Roxil Patio Cream and Roxil Wood Protection Cream, will weatherproof the materials without changing their natural appearance. This will stop moisture penetration and drastically reduce mould, algae and ingrained lichen growth. Freeze / thaw damage will be reduced on patio slabs and warping on wood will be minimised.

The only mould or algae growth that is likely to occur is a small amount of surface growth due to pooling water. This can be easily shifted using a non-destructive cleaner, such as Safeguard Europe’s Roxil Wood & Patio Cleaner. It will allow for effective but gentle cleaning, which will keep the wood or patio materials clean without causing any damage. This soft-washing maintenance schedule will significantly extend

their service life.

The protection from weatherproofing creams on patio slabs and softwood structures will typically last for 10 years or more before retreatment is required, making them a good value investment over destructive power washing and acidic cleaning methods. www.roxil.com

Over 500 industry buyers attended the 2017 Europlants UK Ltd Open Days. Even storm Doris couldn’t keep customers away from this much loved, warm and sociable two-day industry event hosted by Renato Canale and his dedicated team.

Customers were able to view the nursery bursting at the seams with stunning display, including Vanucci’s new eye catching shaved Chamerops Excelsa plants. On offer over the two days were the new “Jackpot” specimen plant offers as well as the trolley deals and other opportunites available during the event.

Thanks to Europlant’s customer generosity, the event, which was compared by ITV’s Love Your Garden David Domoney, raised a whopping £2800 for “Perennial”, the horticultural benevolent society.

It was International Women’s Day last week so it was great news to read that Scotland’s Muirfield golf course will allow women to join for the first time. It only took them 273 years.

I have already sent off my application to join this enlightened group of progressive chaps.

I have never played golf in my life but I’m confident that the lads will be patient while I try and hit their balls.

Men are more likely to turn the heating off when they leave the house – even when there are other family members still inside according to a survey by warm.co.uk “Not only are chaps hitting the ‘off’ button on the thermostat as they walk out of the door, but they’re now using smartphone apps to control the heating while they’re out,” says warm.co.uk spokesperson Jonathan Ratcliffe. “And that’s taken the battle to a whole new level.”

Well there is a battle going on in these

offices. Il duce always turns off the heating when he goes out leaving the rest of us to shiver. In fact the only thing that seems to matter to him right now is what colour to choose for his new car. I’m setting up a protest movement.

Well, we Brits have been there, and done that. We built a wall that was twice as long as Grumpy Trumpy’s. The Easy India Company built a wall down the middle of India to crack down on smuggled salt. A big, beautiful wall.

The Indians would pay for it. However In large parts of India, there wasn’t the rock needed to build it. So they created ‘The Great Hedge of India’ it was around 2.400 miles of thorny trees and bushes. There is absolutely nothing left of it today.

I’m hoping that this year I will get invited to the Chelsea and Hampton Court shows. In order to strengthen my case and get some attention I have purchased some fantastic boots from the Muck Boot Company. They cost £100, they are comfortable, decorative, and selling like hot cakes .
