Ding dong!! The doorbell rings.
¡¡Ding dong!! Suena el timbre.
Who’s there?
—¿Quién está ahí?
“It’s me, Emilio.”
—Soy yo, Emilio.
“Buenos días, Emilio. And remember, we only speak Spanish in this house.”
—Buenos días, Emilio. Recuerda que en esta casa solo se habla español.
“Sorry, Abuela. Buenos días to you, too.”
—Lo siento, Abuela. Buenos días para ti también.
“Great job, Emilio. Now, wave goodbye to your dad.”
—¡Muy bien, Emilio! Ahora, despídete de tu padre.
“Abuela! ¡Abuela! Can we make cookies today?”
—¡Abuela! ¡Abuela! ¿Podemos hacer galletas hoy?
“Anything for my Emilio. But first, we must do some gardening.”
—Lo que sea por mi Emilio. Pero primero, tenemos que trabajar en el jardín.
Abuela’s garden is along her fence in her backyard, and she grows all kinds of vegetables. She grows peas, onions, tomatoes, carrots, spinach, and even kiwi. Abuela planted the kiwi because Emilio loves kiwi.
El jardín de la abuela se encuentra a lo largo de la cerca, en su patio trasero, donde cultiva todo tipo de verduras. Tiene guisantes, cebollas, tomates, zanahorias, espinacas e incluso kiwis. La abuela plantó el kiwi porque a Emilio le encanta el kiwi.
In the garden, Abuela and Emilio pull weeds, add minerals to the soil, and cut dead leaves that might harm the vegetables as they grow. While they work, Abuela explains what she’s doing so that Emilio can grow a garden of his own someday.
En el jardín, Abuela y Emilio se dedican a arrancar la maleza, agregar abono a la tierra y cortar todas las hojas muertas que podrían dañar las verduras en crecimiento. Mientras trabajan, Abuela le explica a Emilio cada tarea que realiza para que algún día él también pueda tener su propio jardín.
Abuela also tells Emilio that it’s best to put tall veggies toward the back of the bed. Midsized ones go in the middle. And smaller plants go in the front or as a border.
“Do you understand?”
Abuela le explica a Emilio que es mejor colocar las verduras más altas detrás de la cama del cultivo. Las de tamaño mediano deben ir en el centro, y las más pequeñas se colocan al frente o como borde.
—¿Entendiste?
“No entiendo.” Emilio doesn’t understand some of the Spanish words that his grandmother says.
—No entiendo. —Emilio no comprende algunas de las palabras en español que su abuela dice.
When this happens, Abuela stops what she’s doing to explain what she said. Emilio does his best to remember everything his grandmother teaches him.
Cuando esto sucede, la abuela deja de hacer lo que está haciendo para explicar lo que dijo. Emilio hace lo posible por recordar todo lo que le enseña su abuela.
“What’s next, Abuela?” Emilio excitedly asks, happy to be helping.
—¿Qué sigue, Abuela? —pregunta Emilio, emocionado por ayudar.
“Next, I’ll put the sprinkler on the ground to water all the plants. Can you please go turn the water on for me?”
—A continuación, pondré el aspersor en el suelo para regar todas las plantas. ¿Puedes por favor abrir el agua por mí?
“All done!” Emilio exclaims, hugging his grandmother’s waist. “And it’s always fun helping you, Abuela.”
—¡Listo! —exclama Emilio, abrazando la cintura de su abuela —. Siempre es divertido ayudarte, Abuela.
“How about we go and make those cookies?”
—¿Qué te parece si ahora vamos a hacer esas galletas?
In the kitchen, the two of them put the cookie dough on a baking sheet and place it in the oven.
En la cocina, ambos colocan la masa para galletas en una bandeja de hornear y las meten en el horno.
“Mmm … Cinnamon cookies are my favorite.” “I know, grandson. Anything for my Emilio.” Abuela turns the timer on.
—Mmm …las galletas de canela son mis favoritas. —Lo sé, nieto. Haré lo que sea por mi Emilio— dice Abuela mientras enciende el temporizador.
“Abuela, how am I doing with my Spanish today?”
—Abuela, ¿cómo hablé español hoy?
“You’re doing a lot better, Emilio. And I only speak to you in Spanish so that you will always know the language of your ancestors. I want you to always be able to speak to your family and pass it on to your new baby sister.”
—Estás mucho mejor, Emilio. Y solo te hablo en español para que siempre sepas el idioma de tus antepasados. Quiero que siempre puedas hablar con tu familia y transmitírselo a tu nueva hermanita.
“That’s what mom and dad tell me. You make it fun to speak Spanish, Abuela.”
—Eso es lo que me dicen mamá y papá. Haces que hablar español sea divertido, Abuela.
Abuela enjoys spending time with her grandson and looks forward to meeting her new baby granddaughter in a few weeks.
A la abuela le gusta pasar tiempo con su nieto y espera conocer a su nueva nieta en unas semanas.
“Come, let’s go call your parents and invite them over for some cookies.”
—Ven, vamos a llamar a tus padres e invitarlos a comer unas galletas.
“Yes ma’am! I can’t wait to eat those cinnamon cookies!”
—¡Sí, señora! ¡No puedo esperar a probar esas galletas de canela!
