Lectio continua—Reader: from Psalm 20
May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion!
May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacriKices!
May he grant you your heart's desire and fulKill all your plans!
May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners!
May the LORD fulKill all your petitions! Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.
O LORD, save the king! May he answer us when we call.

Reflection
Centering Prayer: humility from Matthew 20
The chief priests and the elders of the people came to him, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" Jesus answered, "I will ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?" And they argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'Of human origin,' we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet." So they answered Jesus, We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. "What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the Kirst and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' He answered, 'I will not'; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, 'I go, sir'; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The Kirst." Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.
• The Priests are direct descendants of Aaron and are in place because of their birthright; they challenge Jesus based on his lack of priestly lineage (or even legitimacy). Jesus points them to John the Baptizer—who was of the priestly class and rejected his rights to be a wilderness prophet. John had publicly named Jesus as “The Lamb of God.” Thus giving him prophetic & priestly legitimacy.
- How does their answer further erode their credibility?
- What does their answer show us about their devotion to God, and their call to lead his People?
- Are there ways we’ve similarly placed our need for control ahead of true devotion to God?
• Jesus tells them a parable about a man with 2 sons…The deKiant son “repents” and goes to do the work/ while the younger son pays lip service but doesn’t actually follow through:
- The “sinners” are presented as the older son…how do you suppose this made the priests feel?
- The “willing” son is presented as a liar—whose entrance into the Kingdom of God is in question; how do you suppose the priests take having their “salvation” challenged?
- Where do we ;it into this parable?
Final verse of “Lead Me, Guide Me”
