Beste muziekliefhebbers, Wees welkom op onze 70ste editie van het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd, Neerpelt (EMJ). Het is alweer drie jaar geleden dat wij dirigenten en koren mochten ontvangen op dit muzikaal evenement. De cultuur- en evenementensector heeft het hard te verduren gehad tijdens de afgelopen tijd, jeugdorkesten en -koren staan daarom voor een uitdagende periode. Velen hebben hun interne werking helemaal zien stilvallen, hebben leden verloren en misten de nodige instroom die een belangrijke basis is voor continuïteit. Jonge zangers en muzikanten motiveren om te blijven doen wat ze zo graag doen, is een belangrijke missie van ons festival.

Daarom zij wij blij dat we met onze koreneditie in 2022 opnieuw een platform kunnen bieden voor deze jeugdige zangers.

Naast een muzikaal platform, zijn wij de afgelopen 70 jaren ook een baken geweest van wederzijds respect, verbroedering en samenhorigheid. Met de toenemende onzekerheden op het Europees continent moet onze positieve boodschap van “Alle Menschen werden Brüder” ver over onze landsgrenzen weerklinken. Laten we er samen werk van maken dat onze huidige Europese jeugd geen generatie wordt van haatdragende mensen. Samen op een podium staan kan daarin een belangrijk element zijn. Ons festival wil daar alvast veel aan doen en deze editie van het EMJ zal meer dan anders benadrukken waar de “E” in EMJ voor staat.

Dear music lovers, Welcome at our 70th edition of the European Music Festival for Young People, Neerpelt (EMJ). It has been three years since we welcomed conductors and choirs at this musical event. The cultural and event sector has had much to endure, youth orchestras and choirs are facing a challenging period. Many have seen their internal working stop completely, lost members and missed the necessary inflow of singers that forms the basis for continuity. Motivating young singers and musicians to keep doing what they love to do is an important mission of our festival. That is why we are happy that with this choral edition of 2022 we can once again provide a platform for these youthful singers.

Next to a musical platform, the past 70 years have also been a beacon of mutual respect, fraternisation, and togetherness. With the increasing uncertainties on the European continent, our positive message of “Alle Menschen werden Brüder” must sound far across our country borders. Let’s make sure that the current European youth will not become a generation of hateful people. Being together on-stage can be an important element in this. Our festival is prepared to support this and this edition of the EMJ will emphasize what the “E” in EMJ stands for, more than ever.

JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Kari Ala-Pöllänen Espoo – Finland Kari Ala-Pöllänen is een gediplomeerd docent en studeerde musicologie en orkestrale en chorale directie. Hij is een veelzijdig muzikant en nam reeds de rol op zich van leerkracht, muzikant, dirigent, componist en auteur van muziekboeken. Hij is artistiek directeur, jurylid, gastdirigent en docent in Finland en het buitenland. Hij ook voorzitter van het “artistic committee of the IFCM Songbridge”.

Kari Ala-Pöllänen graduated as a school teacher and studied musicology and orchestral and choral conducting. He is a versatile musician and conductor and has acted as music teacher, musician, conductor, chorister, composer and writer of music books. He is artistic director, jury member, guest conductor and lecturer in Finland and abroad. Timothy Brown Cambridge – Verenigd Koninkrijk/United Kingdom Tim Brown is in zijn 50-jarige muziekcarrière betrokken geweest bij zowel optredens als opleidingen. Als koorzanger in Westminster Abbey, werd hij later lid van het King’s College Choir, Cambridge als contratenor en koorgeleerde. Hij was stichtend lid van The Scholars vocal ensemble voordat hij les begon te geven, wat uiteindelijk leidde in 1979 tot het directeurschap in muziek aan Clare College, Cambridge University in opvolging van John Rutter.

Tot zijn pensioen in 2010 heeft hij het opbouwen van Clare Choir tot een internationaal gerenommeerd koor gecombineerd met vele opnames en concerten en gaf hij les aan de faculteit muziek aan Cambridge University. Tim Brown richtte het professioneel kamerkoor English Voices op als een uitbreiding van zijn leiderschap van het Cambridge University Chamber Choir. Hij werkt als therapeut en workshop docent. Hij reisde naar Israël en de Verenigde Staten en Europa, trad op in kerken, scholen en universiteiten en dirigeerde koren in Oostenrijk en Griekenland. Hij is life Fellow aan Clare College waar hij nog steeds muziek geeft aan Cambridge University in combinatie met zijn job als componist en freelance dirigent.

In a musical career spanning fifty years, Tim Brown has been equally involved in both, performance and musical education. A chorister at Westminster Abbey, he was later a member of King’s College Choir, Cambridge, as a countertenor choral scholar. He was a founding member of The Scholars vocal ensemble, before taking up teaching positions that eventually led, in 1979, to the Directorship of Music at Clare College, Cambridge University, in succession to John Rutter.

Until he retired from this position in 2010 Tim Brown combined the building up of the Clare Choir into an internationally renowned ensemble, with many recordings and concert appearances to its credit, with a teaching position in the music faculty of Cambridge University. Tim Brown founded the professional chamber choir English Voices as an extension of his leadership of Cambridge University Chamber Choir. He works extensively as a clinician and workshop leader, travelling to Israel and the United States as well as Europe, working in churches, schools and universities, and directing choral courses in Austria and Greece. He is a life Fellow of Clare College, where he continues to teach music at Cambridge University, combining this with work as a freelance conductor and composer.

JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Erika Budai* Leuven – België/Belgium Erika Budai studeerde voor beroepsmusicus aan het Lemmensinstituut in Leuven en aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussel. Zij is docente harmonieleer en muziekcompositie aan het Conservatorium in Leuven en actief als componiste. Ze wordt als jurylid regelmatig gevraagd op nationale en internationale muziek- en compositiewedstrijden. Sinds 2012 is zij actief bestuurslid van het Béla Bartók Archief in Brussel.

Erika Budai studied to become a professional musician at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels and the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. Here, she teaches harmony and composition.

Ludo Claesen Hasselt – België/ Belgium Ludo Claesen studeerde percussie, muziekschriftuur, compositie en koor- en orkestdirectie aan het Lemmensinstituut van Leuven en het Vlaams Muziekconservatorium van Antwerpen.

Hij doceerde 36 jaar lang polyfonie en orkestspel aan LUCA-ARTS Leuven. Momenteel doceert hij koordirectie aan de Hogeschool Zuyd - Conservatorium Maastricht en aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium Hasselt. Hij heeft de artistieke leiding over koren in Hasselt, Borgloon, Leuven en Maastricht.

Ludo Claesen studied Percussion, musical writing, composition and choir and orchestral conducting at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven and the Vlaams Muziekconservatorium in Antwerp. He taught polyfonia and orchestral play at LUCA-ARTS Leuven for 36 years. At the moment he teaches choral conducting at the Hogeschool Zuyd - Conservatorium Maastricht and the Stedelijk Conservatorium Hasselt. He is the artistic leader of choirs in Hasselt, Borgloon, Leuven and Maastricht.

John Damsma* Groningen - Nederland/The Netherlands John Damsma studeerde cello, schoolmuziek en orkestdirectie aan het Conservatorium te Groningen. Hij is internationaal actief als arrangeur en dirigent en heeft zich toegelegd op lichte muziek en het opleiden van koordirigenten. Hij is medeauteur over de ontwikkeling van het muziekonderwijs, gastdocent en jurylid tijdens binnen- en buitenlandse festivals en wedstrijden. John is artistiek leider en landelijk juryvoorzitter van het Nederlands Koor Festival.

John Damsma studied the cello, school music and orchestra conducting at the Conservatory of Groningen. He is internationally active as arranger and conductor and concentrates on light music and educating choir conductors. He is a co-author for the development of school music, a guest lecturer and a jury member at festivals in the Netherlands and abroad. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Johannes Dewilde Gent – België/Belgium Johannes Dewilde profileert zich in de muziekwereld als pedagoog, docent, trompettist en koordirigent. Hij behaalde een master in de muziektheorie, een bachelor als uitvoerend muzikant (trompet/cornet) en een master in de koordirectie aan de conservatoria van Gent en Antwerpen. Hij volgde masterclasses bij uiteenlopende docenten in binnen- en buitenland.

Hij geeft les aan de GO! Kunstenacademie in Gent en het conservatorium van Brugge. Hij gaf les aan de Universiteit van Joensuu (Finland), het conservatorium van Antwerpen en de Arteveldehogeschool Gent. Hij wordt regelmatig geëngageerd als jurylid en dirigent op festivals en in de conservatoria in Vlaanderen. Sinds 2012 is hij dirigent van het internationaal bekroond jong dameskoor Amaranthe. Onlangs werd hij met Amaranthe tweemaal Champion of the World Choir Games. Ook met zijn gemengd vocaal ensemble Saevus viel hij reeds in de prijzen. Sinds 2021 dirigeert hij het Brussels Young Adults Choir. In 2017 ontving hij in Rome de ‘conductor price for outstanding achievements’. Tijdens CantaRode Kerkrade 2018 ontving hij de prijs voor beste dirigent.

Johannes Dewilde is a pedagogue, teacher, trumpetist and choir director. He obtained a master’s degree in music theory and choral conducting and a bachelor’s degree as a practicing musician (trumpet/cornet)and master in choir direction at the conservatory of Ghent and Antwerp. He took masterclasses with different teachers abroad and in his home country. He teaches at the GO! Kunstenacademie in Ghent and Bruges. He taught at the University of Joensuu (Finland), the conservatory of Antwerp and the Arteveldehogeschool in Ghent. He is often asked to be jury member and conductor at festivals and in conservatories in Flanders. Since 2012 he is the conductor of the internationally renowned women’s choir Amaranthe. Recently, Amaranthe became Champion twice at the World Choir Games. He also won prizes with his vocal ensemble Saevus. Margrethe Ek Moss - Noorwegen/Norway Margrethe Ek begon met dirigeren toen ze 14 jaar oud was. Ze behaalde een masterdiploma zang, muziekpresentatie en dirigeren aan de Norwegian Academy of Music. Ze werkt momenteel als het hoofd en docent van de afdeling muziek-dans-drama op de Kikreparken Upper Secondary School in Moss. Ze werkte 11 jaar aan de universiteit van Oslo rond zang en dirigeren. Ze heeft over de jaren heen verscheidene internationaal gerenommeerde vocale en instrumentale ensembles gedirigeerd. Vandaag dirigeert ze het in 2010 opgerichte koor “Moss Ensemble Consensus”.

Margrethe Ek started conducting at the age of 14, studied master in singing, music performance and presentation and received a diploma in conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

She currently works as head of the Music-Dance-Drama department and as professor at “Kikreparken Upper Secondary School” in Moss. She worked for 11 years at the University of Oslo within the subjects of song and conducting and has conducted several internationally awarded and highly valued vocal and instrumental ensembles. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Masis Aram Gözbek Istanbul – Turkije/Turkey Eerst studeerde Masis Aram Gözbek wiskunde aan Boğaziçi University. Daarna studeerde hij compositie aan Yildiz Technical University en MSFAU State Conservatory waar hij zijn dirigent-studies verder zette. Hij woonde talloze competities, festivals en masterclasses bij over de hele wereld en studeerde bij dirigenten en componisten met veel aanzien. Verder leidde hij workshops en concerten met wereldbekende koren. Hij won vele internationale prijzen zoals twee ‘World Championship’ awards, de ‘Young Conductor Special Award’ in Varna,de 2021 European Video Award’ van ECA ‘The Most Successful Young Person’ award an ‘The Music Entrepreneur of the Year’ in Turkije. Hij was één van de twaalf finalisten in het ‘World Choral Conducting Competition’ in Hong Kong. Hij richtte de ‘Voice of Cultures’ en ‘KOROHANE’ (Choir-House) projecten op in heel Turkije. Hij werd op de meest prestigieuze festivals uitgenodigd met het Boğaziçi i Jazz Choir and MAGMA Choirs. Hij is ook docent aan Haliç University Conservatory, Istanbul.

First Masis Aram Gözbek studied mathematics at Boğaziçi University, then composition at Yıldız Technical University and MSFAU State Conservatory where he continues his conducting studies.

He attended countless competitions, festivals and master classes all over the world and studied with highly regarded conductors and composers and also led workshops and concerts with some world-renowned choirs. He won many international prizes including two ‘World Championship’ awards and many first prizes, the ‘Young Conductor Special Award’ in Varna, the ‘2021 European Video Award’ of ECA, ‘The Most Successful Young Person’ and ‘The Music Entrepreneur of the Year’ awards in Turkey. He was one of the 12 finalists in the World Choral Conducting Competition in Hong Kong. He initiated the ‘Voice of Cultures’ and ‘KOROHANE’ (Choir-House) projects all over Turkey. Sabine Haenebalcke* Vloesberg – België/Belgium Sabine Haenebalcke heeft er een carrière als pianodocente aan MUDA-Gent opzitten.

Daarnaast dirigeert zij sedert tientallen jaren diverse koren en ensembles en is ze een veelgevraagd stemmen directiecoach. Zij is jurylid van binnen- en buitenlandse koorwedstrijden en –tornooien.

Sabine Haenebalcke has had a career as a piano teacher at MUDA-Ghent. Furthermore, she has been conducting multiple choirs and ensembles for decades. She is also a popular vocal coach.

JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Lukáš Matoušek Tehov Hačálka – Tsjechische Republiek/Czech Republic Lukáš Matoušek studeerde klarinet, directie en compositie aan het Conservatorium van Praag en de “Janácek Academy of Performing Arts”. Hij was muzikaal directeur en redacteur van de Nationale Radio in Praag en programmadirecteur van het Praagse Symfonieorkest. Hij is componist, artistiek directeur en lector aan de “Academy of Performing Arts” in Praag en is gastlector en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

Lukáš Matoušek studied the clarinet, conducting and composition at the Prague Conservatory and Janácek Academy of Performing Arts. He was musical director and editor of the Czech Radio in Prague and program director of the Prague symphony orchestra. He is composer, artistic director and prelector at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Fabio Pecci Misano – Italië/Italy Fabio Pecci studeerde cello aan de “G. Verdi” Music School in Ravenna met geweldige resultaten.

Als cellist heeft hij opgetreden in theaters en concertzalen in Italië en in het buitenland.

Hij dirigeert en richtte het koor “Le Allegre Note” en jeugdkoor “Note in Crescendo” op, met wie hij in prestigieuze theaters optrad. Met deze twee koren heeft hij al meer dan 500 optredens, audio- en televisieopnames en 14 eerste prijzen in koorwedstrijden op zijn naam staan. Hij nam met deze koren ook al vier albums op waarop zijn eigen composities te horen zijn. Sinds 2013 is hij lid van het “Artistic Committee of A.E.R.CO – The Regional Choirs Association”. Hij is ook jurylid in vele koorwedstrijden en artistiek directeur van de “City of Riccione” koorwedstrijd. Sinds 2021 geeft hij les in koorzang en muzikale theorie aan het G.Lettimi Institute of Higher Musical Education in Rimini.

Fabio Pecci studied violoncello at Ravenna’s “G. Verdi” Music School graduating with brilliant results.

As a cellist his busy concert activity has led him to perform in theatres and concert halls in Italy and abroad. He has been awarded prizes in many competitions and has recorded seven CDs for Tactus, Bongiovanni and other labels. He founded and directs “Le Allegre Note” treble voice choir and “Note in Crescendo” youth choir, with which he has also performed in prestigious theatres and won.

With these two choirs he has over 500 performances, audio and television recordings and 14 first prize in Choral Competition to his credit. With them he also recorded four albums which include his own choral arrangements. Since 2013 to 20221 he has been a member of the Artistic Committee of A.E.R.CO – The Regional Choirs Association. Member of the Jury in many Choral Competition, he is the Artistic Director of the “City of Riccione” Choral Competition.

JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS PierAngelo Pelucchi Bergamo – Italië/Italy PierAngelo Pelucchi studeerde af in piano, compositie, zangdidactiek, klavecimbel, lyrische zang, koormuziek en orkestdirectie aan de conservatoria van Verona, Bologna, Bari, Salzburg en Wenen. Als professor aan het conservatorium van Brescia is hij een opera en symfonisch dirigent. Hij is gastdocent Italiaanse opera voor zowel zangers als dirigenten bij verscheidene conservatoria en universiteiten. Daarnaast is hij hoofddirigent van het jeugdorkest “Academia Symphonica of Udine” en jurylid op Europese wedstrijden en festivals.

PierAngelo Pelucchi graduated in piano, composition, didactic of singing, harpsichord, lyrical singing, choral music and orchestral conducting at the Conservatories of Verona, Bologna, Bari, Salzburg and Vienna. Professor at the Conservatory of Brescia, he is an opera and symphonic conductor. Aarne Saluveer Arjumaa – Estland/Estonia Aarne Saluveer studeerde directie en muziekpedagogie aan de Tallinn State Conservatory maar ook in het buitenland aan het “Mozarteum” te Salzburg. Hij is één van de meest actieve lesgevers, dirigenten en producenten van nationale en internationale koren. Hij won reeds verschillende prijzen en heeft opgetreden op prestigieuze (inter)nationale wedstrijden en festivals. Daarnaast is hij ook actief in de koorwereld als bestuurlid van de “International Federation for Choral Music”, “Europa Cantat” en de “World Choir Games”. Tevens is hij ook voorzitter van de Estonian Choral Association en de “International Society for Music Education”. Hij werkte al samen met vele artiesten en componisten waaronder Micheal Jackson en Arvo Pärt.

He is one of most active educators, conductors and producers in national and international choirs. He won prizes and performed in prestigious international choral contests and festivals, served the choral world as Board member of the “International Federation for Choral Music”, “Europa Cantat” and the “World Choir Games”, as President of the Estonian Choral Association and at the “International Society for Music Education” and worked with many artists and composers, incl. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Bernie Sherlock Dunboye – Ierland/Ireland Bernie Sherlock is een vooraanstaande koordirigente. Ze is stichtend dirigent van het internationaal bekroonde kamerkoor New Dublin Voices, Artiestiek directeur van de Irish Youth Choirs and was co-dirigent van het EurChoir 2021. Bernie heeft internationale directieprijzen gewonnen in Finland, Hongarije, België, Italië, Slovenië en Ierland. Haar werk als internationaal jurylid van koor- en directiewedstrijden en workshopdocent heeft haar al naar heel Europa, de Verenigde Staten, Canada en China gebracht. Ze is stichtend bestuurslid van de International Choral Conductors Federation en vertegenwoordiger van Ierland in de World Choir Council.Naast hun vele optredens in Ierland, hebben de New Dublin Voices elitaire Europese wedstrijden gewonnen in onder meer Hongarije, Letland, Italië, België, Noord-Ierland en Ierland en traden ze op tijdens het driejaarlijkse World Symposium on Choral Music in 2017. Bernie geeft les aan de TU Dublin Conservatoire. Twaalf jaar lang dirigeerde ze en gaf ze les aan de jaarlijkse Sing Ireland International Choral Conducting Summer School. Ze behaalde masterdiploma’s en doctoraten in directie aan respectievelijk de National University of Ireland, Maynooth, en de Royal Irish Academy of Music/DCU. Bernie Sherlock is a leading choral conductor. She is the founder-conductor of the international award-winning chamber choir New Dublin Voices, Artistic Director of the Irish Youth Choirs, and was co-conductor of EuroChoir 2021. Bernie has won international conducting prizes in Finland, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, Slovenia and Ireland. Her ongoing work as an international adjudicator of choral and conducting competitions and director of choral workshops has taken her around Europe and to the US, Canada and China. She is a founding board member of the International Choral Conductors Federation, and the representative for Ireland on the World Choir Council.

As well as its strong presence in performance at home in Ireland, New Dublin Voices has come first at elite European competitions including in Hungary, Latvia, Italy, Belgium, Northern Ireland and Ireland, and performed at the triennial World Symposium on Choral Music in 2017.

Bernie is a Lecturer in Music at the TU Dublin Conservatoire. For twelve years she directed and taught on the annual Sing Ireland International Choral Conducting Summer School. Dieter Staelens Leuven – België/Belgium Dieter Staelens behaalde aan het Leuvense Lemmensitituut de diploma’s muzikale opvoeding, muziektheorie, koorleiding, notenleer, harmonie en polyfonie. Hij volgde eveneens de voortgezette opleiding koordirectie bij Kurt Bikkembergs. Hij is oprichter, dirigent en gastdirigent van menig koor, waaronder Cantabile (Kampenhout), Canzonetta (Kessel-Lo) en de Camerata Aetas Nova (Leuven) waarmee hij de titel ‘Koor van het Jaar’ behaalde. Dieter Staelens graduated from the Lemmens institute in music education, music theory, choral conducting, harmony and polyfony. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Robert Sund Uppsala – Zweden/ Sweden Rober Sund zingt, speelt, arrangeert, componeert en dirigeert. Zijn multitalent heeft hem een prominente positie gegeven op het Zweedse en internationale podium. Voor vele jaren was hij zanger, artistiek directeur en dirigent van verschillende koren en doceert hij dirigeren aan de Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Hij wordt veel gevraagd als gastdirigent en om cursussen te geven voor zowel koorzangers als dirigenten. Hij gaf reeds workshops tijdens verschillende symposia en hij is docent en jurylid op meerdere koorwedstrijden en festivals over heel de wereld. Zijn talrijke arrangementen en composities hebben het repertoire van koren over de hele wereld verrijkt.

Robert Sund sings, plays, arranges, composes and conducts. This multi-faceted gift has given him a prominent position both on the Swedish and the international scene. For many years he was singer, artistic director and conductor of several choirs and has been teaching conducting and ensemble leadership at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. His numerous arrangements and compositions has enriched the repertoire for choirs all over the world. www.robertsund.se Krzysztof Szydzisz Poznan – Polen/Poland Krzysztof Szydzisz is een koormeester, musicoloog, specialist in stemproductie, spraaktherapeut en cultureel manager. Daarnaast is hij professor en departementshoofd stemproductie aan het Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz en dirigent van het Adam Mickiewicz Chamber koor in Poznan. Hij is tevens artistiek directeur van het Festival of University Choirs ‘Universitas Cantat’ en jurylid tijdens koorwedstrijden en -festivals.

Krzysztof Szydzisz is choirmaster, musicologist, specialist in voice production, speech therapist and cultural manager. Professor and head of the department of voice production at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz and conductor of the Adam Mickiewicz University Chamber Choir in Poznań. He is the artistic director of the International Festival of University Choirs ‘Universitas Cantat’ and jury member at choral competitions and festivals.

Kaie Tanner Tallinn – Estland/Estonia Kaie Tanner beëindigde haar koor- en muziekopleiding aan de Georg Ots Tallinn Music School en de Estonian Academy of Music. Ze werkt als de algemeen secretaris van de Estonian Choral Association en dirigeert het voorbereidend-, (jonge) kinder- en meisjeskoor en het Estlands radiokoor. Ze is bestuurslid van de Estonian Choral Association, European Music Council en European Choral Association – Europa Cantat. Daarnaast is ze voorzitster van het Choral Festival Network. Ze organiseert (inter)nationale koorevenementen, gaf presentaties op (inter) nationale conferenties en publiceerde artikels in (inter)nationale magazines en kranten, leidde (inter)nationale workshops en was jurylid in internationale korenfestivals.

Kaie Tanner finished choral and music education at Georg Ots Tallinn Music School and the Estonian Academy of Music. She is working as general secretary of the Estonian Choral Association and conducts the preparatory-, young children’s-, children’s- and girls’ choirs of the Estonian Radio. She is board member of the Estonian Choral Association and president of Choral Festival Network; and has also been board member of European Music Council and European Choral Association – Europa Cantat. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Hans van den Brand Berkel-Enschot – Nederland/ The Netherlands Hans van den Brand studeerde schoolmuziek, orgel, piano en koordirectie aan het Fontys Conservatorium en volgde meesterscursussen orkestdirectie en arrangeren. Tot 2021 was hij verbonden als hogeschooldocent muziekdidactiek en ensembleleiding aan de Fontys Academie voor Muziekeducatie Tilburg. Hans doceert koordirectie aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Daarnaast is hij koordirigent en -coach, componist/ arrangeur, veelgevraagd gastdocent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland.

Hans van den Brand studied music education, organ, piano and choral conducting at the Fontys Conservatorium and took master courses on orchestra direction and arrangements. Until 2021 he taught music didactics and ensemble accompaniment at the Fontys Academie voor Muziekeducatie Tilburg. Hans teaches choir conducting at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

Furthermore, Hans is a popular choir conductor and coach, composer-arranger, guest lecturer and jury member in The Netherlands and abroad.

Maarten Van Ingelgem Aalst - België/Belgium Maarten Van Ingelgem (°1976) studeerde piano en compositie aan de conservatoria van Brussel en Antwerpen. Zijn passie voor het creatieve deelt hij als docent Compositie aan LUCA School of Arts - Campus Lemmens en als leraar Compositie en Muziektheorie aan de Academie voor Podiumkunsten in Aalst. Daarnaast is hij pianobegeleider aan de academies van Ninove en Dilbeek. Sinds 2001 dirigeert hij het kamerkoor voor hedendaagse muziek De 2de Adem uit Gent waarmee hij intussen al ruim veertig creaties bracht. Als zanger deed hij jarenlang ervaring op bij o.a. Aquarius en het Vlaams Radiokoor. Maarten was Artistiek Leider van de World Choir Games 2021 Vlaanderen.Zijn compositorisch oeuvre gaat van solowerk over strijkkwartetten en een kameropera tot een pianoconcerto. Sabam reikte hem de Gouden Klaproos uit voor koorcompositie en hij werd driemaal laureaat van de European Award for Choral Composers. Zijn composities zijn uitgegeven bij Euprint en Schott Music.

While studying piano and composition at the conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp, Maarten Van Ingelgem (b. 1976) caught the choir bug. He shares his passion for creativity in his role as Professor of Composition at LUCA School of Arts, Leuven and teaches composition and music theory at the Academie voor Podiumkunsten in Aalst. Furhtermore, he is accompanying pianist at the academies of Ninove and Dilbeek. In 2001, he started conducting the Ghent-based chamber choir for contemporary music De 2de Adem (The Second Wind). So far, he has performed almost 40 premieres with them. As a singer, he gained many years of experience with Aquarius and the Flemish Radio Choir.

Maarten was the Artistic Director of the World Choir Games 2021 Flanders. His oeuvre as a composer ranges from solo work to string quartets, from a chamber opera to a piano concerto. The Belgian author society Sabam honored him with a Golden Poppy for his choral oeuvre, and, he became laureate of the European Award for Choral Composers three times. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Marijke van Klaveren Voorburg – Nederland/ The Netherlands Marijke van Klaveren studeerde koordirectie, schoolmuziek, orgel en kerkmuziek aan de Conservatoria van Den Haag en Rotterdam. Ze is als locatiemanager, docent en dirigent verbonden aan de Academy of Vocal Arts (ACVA) in Den Haag. Van deze instelling, die zich richt op de vocale training en muzikale opleiding van kinderen, was zij ruim dertig jaar geleden initiatiefnemer. Ook is zij hoofdvakdocent van de opleiding voor kinderkoordirigenten, die verbonden is aan de ACVA. Naast haar taken bij de ACVA is zij dirigent van het Voorburgs Vocaal Ensemble, Dagkoor Voorburg en Dagkoor Wassenaar. Zij heeft een brede ervaring in het dirigeren van diverse types koren. Ook doceerde zij jarenlang aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Momenteel werkt zij aan een nieuwe methode voor muziektheorie: Muziektheorie Basis.

Deze methode laat zich goed combineren met de solfègemethode Jongleren. Zij geeft workshops op het gebied van (kinder)koordirectie en is regelmatig jurylid in binnen- en buitenlandse koorwedstrijden en –festivals.

Marijke van Klaveren studied choral conducting, organ, school and church music at the Conservatoria of The Hague and Rotterdam. She is as venue manager, teacher and conductor connected to the Academy of Vocal Arts (ACVA) in The Hague. At ACVA she focusses on the vocal training and musical education of children. She founded ACVA over 30 years ago. She also teaches the children choirs conductors at ACVA. Besides her activities at ACVA, she directs the Voorburgs Vocaal Ensemble, Dagkoor Voorburg and Dagkoor Wassenaar. She is experienced in conducting different types of choirs. She also taught at the Koninklijk Conservatorium The Hague for years. At the moment, she works on a new method for music theory: Music theory basic. This method combines well with the solfègemethod “Jongleren”. Silvère van Lieshout Voorburg – Nederland Silvère van Lieshout was tot voor kort directeur van de Academy of Vocal Arts in Den Haag.

Daar dirigeert hij het Vocaal Ensemble Cantamare, het Young Men’s Chorus en Kamerkoor ACVA VOCES. Hij is auteur van de methode voor kinderkoor, ‘Jongleren’, om kinderen en volwassenen van blad te leren zingen en is tevens oprichter van het Nationaal Kinder- en Jeugdkoor.

Patrick Windmolders Deurne - België/Belgium Patrick Windmolders studeerde aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven en aan de Conservatoria van Antwerpen en Tilburg. Hij behaalde er de diploma’s regentaat muziekopvoeding, bachelor schriftuur en master koordirectie. Hij doceert AML, creatief musiceren en koorzang aan de!Kunsthumaniora te Antwerpen. Daarnaast is hij gastdocent in de koorklassen van het Antwerps en Brussels Conservatorium. Hij is dirigent van het “A-koor Antwerpen” en het vocaal ensemble “Reflection” en jurylid bij verschillende provinciale, nationale en internationale wedstrijden en festivals.

HET EUROPEES PROJECT “WEBEUNITED” Het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd wil koren die op zoek zijn naar een extra uitdaging de kans geven om een werk in te studeren dat speciaal werd geschreven voor het Europees samenwerkingsproject “West-Balkan and Europe United, musical synergies for young artists”.

Voor dit project werkt het EMJ samen met partners uit drie andere landen van de Europese Unie (Italië, Polen en Hongarije) en zes landen uit de West-Balkan (Albanië, Montenegro, Kosovo, Noord-Macedonië, Servië en Bosnië). Het doel van dit project is om jongeren kennis te laten maken met de typische koormuziek uit een andere regio. Zo hebben wij en onze partners muziek laten componeren door koorcomponisten uit de WestBalkan en willen we deze in onze contreien laten uitvoeren door koren afkomstig uit landen van de Europese Unie. Gelijktijdig worden composities geschreven door Belgische, Poolse, Italiaanse en Hongaarse componisten die zullen uitgevoerd worden in de West-Balkan. Op deze manier willen we deze voor velen vaak nog onbekende regio voorstellen aan de Europese jeugd en een culturele uitwisseling tot stand brengen.

THE EUROPEAN PROJECT “WEBEUNITED” The European Music Festival for Young People wants to give choirs who are looking for an extra challenge the opportunity to study a song written especially for the European cooperation project “West-Balkan and Europe United, musical synergies for young artists”.

For this project the EMJ cooperates with partners from three countries in the European Union (Italy, Poland and Hungary) and six countries from the West-Balkan region (Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia). The aim of this project is to introduce youngsters to choir music typical for a different region than their own.

We and our partners have asked choir composers from the West-Balkan to compose songs and we want to let them be performed by choirs based in the European Union.

Simultaneously, compositions written by Belgian, Polish, Italian and Hungarian composers will be performed in the West-Balkan. This way we want to introduce a, for many, lesser known region to the European youth and achieve cultural exchange.

HET EMJ WANDELPAD THE EMJ TOUR OF NEERPELT Voortgaand op het succes van vorig jaar zal het EMJ Wandelpad dit jaar opnieuw te verkennen zijn in de periode rond het festival. Deze tocht doorheen de straten van Neerpelt gidst de wandelaar langs verschillende EMJ-relevante plaatsen. Op ieder van deze plekken ontdekt de deelnemer de historische achtergrond, alsook een leuk weetje. Tijdens het festivalweekend zullen naast het parcours ook verschillende locaties zijn waar je muziek kan beluisteren. Hoe kan het anders? ’t Is toch Muziekfestival! De route is te downloaden via de app izi.travel, waar de wandeling zowel in het Nederlands als in het Engels zal te volgen zijn. Geen nood, je hoeft echt geen topsporter te zijn om van deze wandeling te genieten.

Het EMJ Wandelpad is ongeveer 4,5 km lang. Het start- en eindpunt van de wandeling zijn voorzien aan zaal de Dommelgalm (Jaak Tassetstraat 20, 3910 Pelt). Tijdens het festivalweekend zullen de enige echte EMJ hosts en hostessen de wandelaars verwelkomen en hen op een gepaste wijze op het EMJ-pad helpen. De wandeling zal vanaf zondag 24 april 2022 opengesteld worden voor het publiek.

Continuing the success of last year, you will be able to enjoy the EMJ Tour of Neerpelt once again in the weeks around the festival. This walk will guide you through the streets of Neerpelt, past many different locations that share a history with the EMJ. At each stop, the participant gets to know the historical background, but also a fun fact. During the festival weekend, there will be several locations where you will be able to listen to musicians. How could it be any other way? It’s the Music Festival! The route will be accessible through the app izi.travel, where you can find the tour in both Dutch and English.

No worries, you don’t have to be a top athlete to be able to complete the walk.

It will be around 4,5 km in length. The start and finish will be located at de Dommelgalm (Jaak Tassetstraat 20, 3910 Pelt). During the festival weekend, the iconic EMJ hosts and hostesses will welcome the participants and get them going on the walk. The tour will be publicly available from Sunday 24th of April 2022 onwards.

Daarnaast zorgen zangeres Jolien Thijs en de muzikanten van het Harmonieorkest van de Kunstacademie Noord-Limburg voor het muzikale entertainment. Iedereen is alvast van harte welkom.

The Kick-off is the official start of the European Music Festival for Young People in Neerpelt. By singing the song "Kusimama", 200 pupils of Neerpelt’s elementary schools will welcome the many international participants to enjoy a sparkling musical show. Furthermore, singer Jolien Thijs and the musicians of the orchestra of the Kunstacademie Noord-Limburg will provide some musical entertainment. You are all very welcome.

19.00 – 00.30 uur Openingsfeest “A Taste of Neerpelt” Kerkplein, Neerpelt Ook dit jaar zorgt het EMJ, in samenwerking met regionale traiteurs, handelaars, verenigingen, culturele partners en het gemeentebestuur van Pelt, voor een compleet totaalspektakel en topcatering. Naast het smullen van allerlei lekkernijen, hapjes en drankjes, kunnen de aanwezigen ook genieten van sfeervolle muziek verzorgd door de bands “Benzton” en “The Mysterious 4”. Benzton is een 3-mans formatie die de pop, rock en dance hits van vroeger en nu, van binnen- en buitenland brengen. Om 22.30 uur wordt naar jaarlijkse traditie het Festival opgevrolijkt met een spectaculaire vuurwerkshow, eveneens begeleid door meeslepende muziek. We sluiten af met The Mysterious 4. Een swingende covergroep bestaande uit topmuzikanten. Ze brengen covers die reiken van de jaren 60 tot nu.

Dit alles gebracht met hart en ziel en die doet denken aan de hoogdagen van de Stax Roots, Rock & Soul! Kortom, we kijken er alvast naar uit jullie allemaal te kunnen verwelkomen!

This year again, the EMJ, in cooperation with regional caterers, traders, associations, cultural partners and the Neerpelt city council, provides a complete show and top catering. Next to tasting all kinds of delicacies, snacks and drinks, you can enjoy atmospheric music of the bands “Benzton” and “The Mysterious 4”. WORKSHOPS Naar analogie met de vorige vocale festivaledities zal het EMJ, met de steun van Koor & Stem, diverse vocale en teambuilding gerelateerde workshops organiseren. Jongeren kunnen er met veel enthousiasme kennis maken met nieuwe muzikale uitdagingen en zullen er samen zingen met kinder- en jeugdkoren van diverse nationaliteiten. Zo leren deelnemers kennis maken met allerhande muzikale technieken en composities.

Op zaterdag 30 april en zondag 1 mei zullen 16 koren deelnemen aan vier workshops onder de deskundige leiding van binnen- en buitenlandse docenten.

As in the previous vocal editions? The EMJ organizes a range of choral workshops supported by Koor & Stem. Youngsters are offered the opportunity to enthusiastically get to know new musical challenges and to perform together with children’s and youth choirs from various nationalities. This way participants get acquainted with different kind of music techniques and compositions.

On Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1, 16 choirs will participate in four workshops presided over by Belgian and foreign lecturers.

FESTIVALAMBASSADEURS FESTIVAL AMBASSADORS Sedert 2007 heeft het EMJ deze eretitel ingebracht. Het wil een persoon of een vereniging aanstellen als vertegenwoordiger van het festival in binnen­en buitenland, een persoon of vereniging die erg loyaal is aan het EMJ en dit met enthousiasme overdraagt aan anderen. Aanvankelijk werden voornamelijk buitenlandse juryleden met deze eretitel vereerd maar sedert enkele jaren worden ook "groepsambassadeurs" in het leven geroepen. Anno 2022 willen we met erg veel enthousiasme het Showkoor Rise Up Pelt hieraan toevoegen.

Deze, zoals ze zichzelf noemen, toffe meidengroep heeft voor het EMJ al erg veel betekend, niet alleen in het promoten van het EMJ maar zeker hebben zij een zeer sterke bijdrage geleverd aan de introductie van nieuwe en populaire trends in de G reeks van ons festival zoals showkoren. Onze gezamenlijke bedoeling is om nog meer jongeren aan het zingen te krijgen en ook onze Vlaamse culturele klassieke waarden mee te geven. Met Rise Up zullen we daarin zeker een mooie balans vinden. Tijdens de Kick-off op vrijdagavond in de sporthall Provinciaal Dommelhof zullen wij dit ambassadeurschap met veel enthousiasme verwelkomen.

Since 2007 the EMJ has created this honorary title. It is meant to appoint an association as representative of the festival at home and abroad, a person or association that is very loyal to the EMJ and who conveys this enthusiasm to others. Initially, primarily foreign jury members were awarded this title but since several years “group ambassadors” can also be awarded this title. In 2022 we would like to add the show choir Rise Up to this list. This, as they call themselves, fun group of girls has already meant a lot to the EMJ. Not only do they promote the EMJ but they also played a big role in the introduction of new and popular trends in the category G of our festival. Our mutual goal is to encourage more youngsters to sing and to show them our Flemish classical cultural values. Rise Up will help us find a good balance in this. During the Kick-off on Friday evening, we will welcome this ambassadorship with excitement.

Deze koorwedstrijd vindt tweejaarlijks plaats en vanaf dit jaar in Genk.

Voor deze wedstrijd worden ongeveer de 15 topkoren uit de hele wereld geselecteerd voor twee optredens: op zaterdag het verplichte programma en op zondag een keuze uit de profane koorliteratuur.

This International Choir-contest of Flanders is a bi-annual contest to which some 15 high-standard choirs from around the world are selected to perform in two concerts: on Saturday there is the compulsory programme and on Sunday a selection from the profane choral literature.

From 2019 onwards the contest will take place in Genk.

Future of Europe Association Kecskemét, Hongarije (HU) Dit festival zonder wedstrijdgehalte is een van Europa’s grootste culturele festivals waar een variëteit aan kunsten voor kinderen en jongeren aan bod komt. De jeugd van Europa wordt geholpen om “kleine ambassadeurs” van een verenigd Europa te worden met een beter begrip voor elkaars culturen en levenswijzen, tradities, volkskunde en kunsten en dit door deel te nemen en op te treden tijdens het festival.

This meeting, which is not a contest, is one of the biggest European cultural festivals of various arts for children and youth. The International Festival of University Choirs UNIVERSITAS CANTAT promotes academic culture in the field of musical arts. More than ten university choirs and orchestral ensembles from all around the world are invited for the event to Poznań. Participants have the opportunity to present music of their countries in its full diversity. All of these activities create a space for an inspiring cultural and artistic exchange.

Harmonia Gentium Lecco, Italië (IT) Harmonie Gentium heeft als doel om muzikale cultuur te helpen creëren voor de hele bevolking, dit kosteloos en zonder te discrimineren. Ook wensen ze kansen te creëren voor nuttige uitwisselingen van ervaringen en samenwerking binnen Europa en met uitbreiding de hele wereld. Het is dan ook de belofte van Harmonia Gentium om door middel van de muzikale kunst de vriendschap tussen mensen te bevorderen. Ze richten zich hierbij specifiek op jongeren met hun Europees festival G. Zeliolo for “Youth Cantores”. Dit festival heeft als doel om jongeren dichter bij elkaar te brengen via sacrale muziek.
