One of the things most Ph.D. students worry about is how long will it take them to finish everything – from doing their research and writing their dissertation to defend it and graduating. While others finish everything on time or shortly after the expected, there are those who struggle for several months, or even years, longer. Many others even choose to quit due to frustration.

This is what this article is all about. Outlined here are some of the common pitfalls that prolong a Ph.D.’s completion years, including the difficulties. In this article, steps and ways to avoid delays and graduate faster is outlined.

Before we move forward to the tips to graduating faster, let us first tackle the three stages of a Ph.D. Early Stage This is considered to be the first twelve to eighteen months. This is where research-re-

Middle Stage This refers to the second, third, and, in some cases, part of the fourth years. Mostly, these years involve data collection. On the other hand, the supervisors can also make the first step and introduce their students to their faculty colleagues. Gain knowledge, advice, and feedback from every possible person who you think are capable of providing one.

For the resourceful ones, it is important to note that they usually create their Ph.D. dissertation committees as early as possible.

This usually takes place after deciding on the general aims or scope of their research. To make it clearer and to jumpstart the process, it is best that everything is a written proposal and has it evaluated by the committee, including, but not limited to, a supervisor.

Be always on top of your game and do not expect anyone else to do it on your behalf or take over. In fact, it is advisable that one should set up a regular progress-report meeting with the Ph.D. committee. When many people are involved, it is less likely the student will fall behind without anyone noticing.

Write Every Day Even when you don’t’ feel like it or if you’re in the somehow experiencing a “mental block” or a “writer’s block” it is crucial that you write every day. This cannot be empha-

sized enough as it is one of the most important habits you need to develop. One does not become a good writer overnight; it takes a lot of practice. On the other hand, every student knows you can always find something to write about; there is always something in need of being written up.

Practicing and developing some good writing habits will come in handy as you go your way up the doctoral program. It will smoothen too as you progress year by year.

As Dave G. Mumby, Ph.D. would say, “Writing frequently will reveal gaps in one’s knowledge or understanding. Vague and disorganized writing often reflects vague and disorganized thinking. Writing about complex arguments or concepts helps most people understand them more deeply.”

Don’t Be Passive The degree of self-reliance is one of the striking difference that can be noticed between undergraduate and graduate. They should realize that it is totally up to them to teach and train themselves. The sooner they get this, the sooner they start with working their way up and getting things done. They should keep in mind that the graduate supervisor’s primary role is just to track and facilitate their self-education. Again, no one will do it for you. You

might also consider seeking knowledge and advice from a professor. It’s all up to you.

Do not waste much of your time – whether weeks or months – waiting for your supervisor to make the first step. Do not dilly dally and procrastinate, hoping that your supervisor will come to you and dictate your steps.

Make the initiative to make things happen and avoid losing so much time. For instance, arrange the necessary meetings with your supervisor and members of your Ph.D. committee as early as possible.

The point here is that you should take matters into your own hands and give a good impression to others. People will see this as a positive value and they might just put out good words for you in the future.

To sum it up, spoon-feeding is not a thing for this stage in your life. A slow start, even though a start, is still equal to the time lost.

So avoid this at all cost.

Know Who Your Potential Supervisors Are Before Making a Commitment This is much more applicable for those who are just entering the graduate school as compared to those who are already in the Ph.D. program.

Believe it or not, but interpersonal problems that arise between a student and a supervisor usually account for a large percent of drop-

outs in the program. A graduate student and supervising professor cannot continue to work together if they can’t have mutual respect, let alone have the patience to face and talk with each other.

The best alternative to avoiding this is to check your potential supervisors and learn as much as you can about them. It is not necessary (and advisable) that you go up to them and ask them yourselves. This might just give off a negative impression. Looking for clues and maybe observing from afar will help.

You can ask around too, but make it subtle.

Doing this will avoid the inevitable and will save you from losing more of your precious time.

These are just four of the strategies you can do to avoid delays. Remember, in this path you are taking, eyes will be on you. They will watch you every step of the way and will notice just how you handle difficult situations and challenges. Just always have that positive mindset and continue to do your best at all times. Also, learn to be patient with yourself and allow yourself to grow. There will be stumbling blocks along the way; use them for your own good. Work closely and diligently with your supervisor and other professors.

Just put in mind that you might be needing letters of recommendation from them in the future.

Top 10 Suggestions To Defend Your PhD Successfully One of the most common concerns raised by those who are pursuing a Ph.D. is, how they can prepare themselves for their defense?

True enough, how does really one keep the stress levels low and still make sure that everything is on order and that they get the highest chance of success?

One thing is for sure: No two defenses are the same. Every person’s journey is different, especially when we’re talking about a defense done by a Ph.D. student. It is unique and unpredictable, and everything is depending on your talk or presentation. To add, no matter how prepared you think you are, there is still that pool of endless questions, and sometimes, you’re left dumbfounded with no answer in mind. You just have to feel some bit of comfort in the fact that you did your best and gave it your best shot.

Nonetheless, here are ten ways on making sure you ace that defense and it is a success.

Note however that this comes after making sure that you wrote a good quality Ph.D. thesis. No defense will happen if your thesis is not good enough. Only you can write that awesome thesis because you are the expert in that field and that chosen topic.

Never underestimate the time spend on preparing your talk/presentation.

Do not fall into the last-minute trap and the mentality that you can prepare better when under pressure. So don’t even consider doing this. Give enough time to prepare and practice your presentation and talk. You just can’t let your guard down when it comes to this very important milestone. Even if you think you have everything ready, don’t be so complacent. Review a few days before your Ph.D. presentation and double check everything. As much as you can, make sure it slide is relevant and that it contains vital information and that that information is accurate. Do not let even the tiniest detail be obtained at the last minute.

On the other hand, if you are looking forward to a perfect talk (or at least close to perfect), practice multiple times. There’s no room for cramming it all in a day or two. You’ve really got to commit at least a couple of days, if not weeks, for it. The best way to rehearse is to gather your friends and give your talks. But this too is not enough. Practicing is not equal to memorizing your presentation word per word. You just need to familiarize every itsy-bitsy part of it, no awkwardness and no unusual dead air in-between. Give them the practice talk and then also allow them to ask as many questions as they can be related to your presentation. NEWS IITs, IIsc Likely to Centralize GATE Ph.D. & M.tech Admissions GATE Exam is conducted by IIT and IIsc on a rotational basis every year. In a meeting likely to be held on 21st August 2018 decision is supposed to be taken on centralizing the Mtech & Ph.D. admission & counseling procedure for GATE exams in line with that of Joint Entrance Examination – JEE (advanced). A centralized admission procedure is followed for undergraduate courses at IIT’s and IIsc, Bangalore. The committee will take a call if the MTech & Ph.D. admissions should also be done via the same procedure.

As per the current admission protocol, there are multiple layers of screening process. After the GATE results are declared, Successful Candidates need to attend an interview/ test by individual institutions. It becomes a cumbersome process for the candidates

and they end up running from one institute to another. Many times candidates end up giving up their choice of seats too. In order to resolve this issue and give a fair chance to all qualified candidates with a Good GATE rank, the proposal of a centralized admission system has been forwarded.

In the meeting, another proposal of setting up a committee for proper execution & planning of recruitment process as per the admission/ academic schedule of the IITs will be put forth on the table for discussion. As per the forwarded proposal, many students post admissions in IIT’s are being taken up by some PSUs for placement on the basis of their GATE score. Thus they end up leaving the course midway and the seats remain vacant.

The proposal also consists of a demand to form a committee at IITs and IIsc who will be responsible for suggestion reformatory measures of the JEE advanced exam. Truth Behind Kerala Floods & Devastation Revealed It has been a stated fact that too much stone quarrying and mushrooming doubled with illegal forestry and land acquisition are some of the reasons for floods in different parts of the world.

Because of the aim to boost the tourism industry and make sure that tourist keeps flocking in, the government as well as the private companies and individuals ignored the basics of science and continue to push through with development regardless of the stakes at hand.

Madhav Gadgil, an ecologist who also is the founder of the Centre for Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, stated that the Kerala floods and devastation were not due to nature. In fact, he said that it was a disaster made by humans. Nature simply reacted to the illegal excavations and stone quarrying that has been happening for more than ten years.

During his interview with Hindustan Times, Gadgil explained, “Irresponsible environmental policy is to be blamed for the recent floods and landslides in Kerala. Extensive stone quarrying and mushrooming of high-rises as part of tourism, and illegal forest land acquisition by private parties are the major reasons for the recent floods in the state.”

To explain further and give the readers a picture, the Kerala floods and devastation mostly affected the zones marked as ecologically sensitive by no less than the

Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel. This panel is also known the Gadgil Committee.

Gadgil accused successive Kerala governments’ inaction as the culprits behind the kerala flood disasters. According to him, the committee first submitted a report in 2011. However, he had a feeling that the government officials boycotted them, especially as the committee’s recommendation involved the stopping of illegal activities.

In the report, the need for the stone quarrying to be stopped was specifically pointed, stating that it might eventually lead to natural calamities “like the one happening in the state today.”

But unfortunately, most of the establishments decided to turn a deaf ear and not give any weight to the recommendations.

Gadgi stated that a total of 1,650 excavators had been deployed for stone quarrying and mining. However, only 150 of these were given permissions to do the activity.

With much grief, especially with the present condition in Kerala due to the floods, Gadgil said, “The government should at least now stop all the illegal stone quarrying activities after having faced the consequences. Although it is late, the government must act on the recommendation. . .”

It is important to note that the politicians with different backgrounds, together with the Christian church, have made it their promise to oppose the proposed decision of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

Their goal? To stop the possibility, no matter how small the percentage might be, of the implementation of the report of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP),

which is headed by no other than Gadgil.

Many have criticized such report.

For instance, CPI(M) said the implementation of such a report would stall all the proposed power projects in the state. In effect, a severe power crisis would soon take place in Kerala.

It is instrumental to note here that CPI(M) was particularly annoyed by the WGEEP’s objections to the proposed Athirappalli Hydroelectric project.

This move by MoEF came shortly after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) gave November 12 as the deadline for the MoEF to give some clarification on whether or not they would accept the WGEEP report. The deadline set by NGTwas October 8, this followed the passing of the orders to implement NGEEP last April.

The NGEEP report envisages declaration of 37 percent of the Ghats as “Ecologically Fragile”.

“We will physically beat back anyone who comes to our area to implement this report” threatened PC George, MLA and chief whip of the ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front government.

The Syro Malabar Catholic Church, which is considered as the state’s largest church, has also strongly opposed the report due to its effect on the residents’ livelihood.

They recommended that an international conspiracy should be done behind the WGEEP. “If the report is implemented thousands of people living in at least 100 villages would lose their livelihood for they all fall in the socalled ecologically most fragile zone according to WGEEP,” said a church spokesperson.
