NCL Pune Scientists Discover Mosquito Repelling Molecule Indian scientists at National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune have synthesized a new aromatic molecule which claims to help repel and kill mature female of Aedes aegypti mosquito which is a carrier of viruses causing several deadly diseases.

MOSQUITO BITES THAT CAUSE DISEASES SUCH AS MALARIA AND DENGUE ARE A MAJOR HEALTH CONCERN IN COUNTRIES WHERE THE RISE IN TEMPERATURE ENABLES TRANSMISSION AND THEIR EASY BREEDING.

Dengue tops the charts with 390 million illnesses reported per year globally. Usage of Mosquito nets and Mosquito repellents can to some extent help decrease the occurrence & spread of mosquito-borne diseases, But, mosquitoes are becoming resistant to pyrethroid-based insect repellents.

National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune Scientists, has synthesized several molecules from two aromatic substances — noreremophilanes and nardoaristolone B. The chemicals are structurally related to nootkatone, which is a natural product and has previously been shown to be effective against ticks and mites.

Based on structural similarities, NCL scientists reasoned that repellent and insecticidal property may be shown by the molecule against mosquitoes also. They analyzed their efficacy against adult females of Aedes aegypti and discovered that one of those molecules exhibited higher repellence.

In lab experiments, NCL researchers analyzed this molecule by applying a small quantity of the chemical

on muslin cloth placed on the gloves (that was worn by a volunteer). It had been observed that mosquitoes didn’t bite when 0.25 milligram of the molecule was applied a square cm of the surface. Detailed Toxicity studies are yet to be performed.

The researchers are in conversation with some firms for commercialization of this molecule. The study’s results have been published in the jour-

nal ACS Omega.

Astronauts May Soon Grow & Eat SPACE Tomatoes University of California – Riverside has developed tiny tomato plants that could solve the food issue for astronauts in Space. The plants stalks and have leaves but generate a normal quantity of fruit, which makes them a harvest for cultivation anywhere with limited soil and natural resources.

Robert Jinkerson, an assistant professor of chemical and environmental engineering in the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering and Martha Orozco-Cárdenas, director of the Plant Transformation Research Center in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, will use the two-year $800,000 grant to continue to lower the size of the tiny plants, engineer them to get improved photosynthesis, develop them in a container that mimics conditions on the International Space Station, examine the fruit’s nutritional content, and conduct taste tests.

Eligibility: Candidates with Master’s Degree (M.Sc. /M.Tech/M.Pharm) with minimal aggregate of 55% marks or equivalent in CGPA in almost any branch of Life sciences / Biotechnology / Physics / Chemistry / Computer Sciences or allied subject with particular interest in Biology OR B.Tech (in Information Technology/Computer Sciences/ Biological Sciences or other branches with particular interest in Biology) / B.Pharm / B.E. / MBBS applicants with at least 55 percent (or equal in CGPA) may apply. B.Tech/B. Pharm/BE students who meet the condition for GATE-JRF fellowship (http://csirhrdg.res.in/jrfgate.pdf) will also be eligible. The minimum aggregate of marks in the event of SC/ ST/Differently-abled applicants is 50 percent.

Candidates also have to have some of the valid research fellowships like CSIR/UGC NET or DBT JRF examination (‘A’ Category) or DST INSPIRE Fellowship or ICMR JRF evaluation or alternative equal fellowship. Please be aware that valid proofs, of Fellowship examinations, and Masters’/ Bachelor’s degree or those awaiting for their final results, are compulsory for appearing in the interview. Those coming for the interview must be prepared to be present in Chandigarh for 2 days, that is the approximate time necessary to finalize the admission. No TA/DA or any other expenses will be compensated

for appearing in the interview. Candidates should also state their present occupation, if any, prior to the interview; any concealment may result in cancellation of admission at any stage.

Selection: The qualified candidates will be called for interview at IMTECH, Chandigarh. The interview is going to be targeted at assessing the candidate’s comprehension, critical analysis, logical reasoning and aptitude for scientific research. The result of the chosen candidates will be announced on the AcSIR website. The fee for the PhD program is according to the AcSIR fee arrangement. Presently, per semester fee is Rs. 7,000/- and – thesis submission fees are Rs. 5,000/-.
