WHY STUDY AT AcSIR? The aim of AcSIR is the pursuit of excellence in addition to doing something applicable. We promote the culture of being singularly dynamic and innovative. The Academy was established by a Resolution of the Parliament in 2010 and received recognition as an”Institution of National Importance” by the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) Act 2011. The Academy intends to maximize the number of qualified professionals and researchers of high-quality in the domain of science and engineering; and also to equip them with the skills to innovate and conduct seamless interdisciplinary research.

ABOUT PROGRAMS: The programs equip students to undertake interdisciplinary research by providing a broad-based practical training at the best in the class national laboratories of CSIR. The Programs are structured around academic coursework (according to program requirement) and compulsory courses viz. One Project Proposal & one Review Article writing; and Societal Program; and research in frontier areas of Science, Technology and Engineering leading to a PhD degree.

He introduced the Amrita University and shared the extensive list of courses offered by them.

The session also portrayed feedback of their alumni, so that all the participants could have first-hand information about the experience. After a descriptive and informative talk, ‘Biotecnika Prime’, a novel venture by Biotecnika, was introduced and the attendees visualized how Prime could help them in procuring research aides under one roof. Teri University, represented by Ms. Udita Sony came up next. She began with a brief introduc-

tion about the institute and informed about the various courses offered by them along with the eligibility criteria for each. Up next was our special guest for the day ‘Dr. Cletus D’Souza’, Chairman of the Committee for Development of science in schools, from the University of Mysore. He gave an insightful talk about the various career options in the field of science . Once the session resumed after a short break, Reva University, represented by Dr. Ramachandran, introduced the University and informed about the opportunities awaiting students. Mr. Shekhar Suman went ahead and introduced The Institute of Patent Attorneys, India (IPAI) and informed about the Patent Agent Examination that would allow a student to pursue a career in filing patents.

The next University to be presented was ‘Padmashree Institute of Management and Sciences’, represented by ‘Dr. Anuradha’, Principal of the respected institute.

She provided a brief idea about their institutes, courses and the placements offered by them. The last talk for the day was from Biotecnika’s Academic specialist ‘Dr. Pallavi Rungta’, who gave a knowledgeable idea to all the attendees on ‘Careers for Life Science students in pharmaceuticals & chemical industry’, which answered many of the attendee’s dilemma. Wellcome Trust / DBT India Alliance Grants & Training Programmes 2019

T

he Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance launches new financing programmes to tackle India’s health issues through collaborative research and also by building clinical research capacity.

The Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance (henceforth, India Alliance), a public charity that funds health research in India, announces the launching of new financing schemes that aim to address major health issues for India and the entire world. Three new initiatives will fund collaborative research projects, clinical research centres, and clinical research training, as ways to promote innovation and excellence and improve India’s health research ecosystem.

Together with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India and Wellcome Trust, UK, renewing this partnership for another 5 years, India Alliance has entered a fresh phase of financing from April 2019. This enables India Alliance to amplify its efforts beyond providing individual fellowships at different career stages to basic biomedical, clinical, and public health researchers, which it’s done for ten years. We now bring three new initiatives: Team Sci-

ence Grants, Clinical/Public Health Research Centres, and Clinical Research Training Programme.

Team Science Grants (TSG) Team Science Grants (TSG) will finance teams that bring together high tech scientists from multiple institutions with complementary skills, knowledge, and resources to tackle a significant health challenge for India.

High-risk, high-reward suggestions may also find funding under this program.

Clinical/Public Health Research Centres (CRC) Clinical/Public Health Research Centres (CRC) are envisioned as ‘research-oriented centres’, which preferably involve numerous institutions that focus on significant biomedical research problems and develop physician-scientists. The CRCs will be virtual centres that may have either crosscutting or vertical research topics, together with the training of early career physician-researcher as an essential component. Beyond the funding period, the CRCs are expected to evolve as sustainable centres that strengthen India’s clinical and public

health research ecosystem.

Clinical Research Training Programme (CRTP).

Physician-scientists link the clinic to research, for which the CRCs could have an embedded Clinical Research Training Programme (CRTP). These can finance 3-year mentored research training fellowships for medical graduates (MBBS) and post-graduates (MD/MS). These fellowships are intended to incorporate basic and clinical/public health research and equip trainees with skills required for a career in health research.

itiatives. Having financed very high tech human researchers for the last ten years, the next phase has to focus on the coming together with teams to make more than the sum of components. This program implemented by the Indo French Centre for Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/ CEFIPRA) aims at enhancing the doctoral skills of French and Indian students by offering them an opportunity to carry out part of the research work in a University / Research & Development Institute established in France or India respectively.

This program is currently open to French Master Students, who want to

devote some time in India in accordance with their own curriculum. It aims at enhancing the Master’s abilities of French pupils by offering them a chance to perform an internship job at a University / Research Institute established in India.

The strategy also gives exposure and expertise about the present research procedures and trends in France/India, while detecting each other’s cultural context.

Interested and eligible candidates are eligible to apply online for Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds – PhD Fellowships as per the details below: PhD Fellowships: The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards PhD fellowships into outstanding junior scientists who want to pursue an ambitious PhD project of about 3 years in basic biomedical research within a global leading laboratory. For additional details please refer to “Who can apply ?“. The peerreview-based selection procedure is extremely competitive. Applicants must consequently be exceptional in all three selection criteria.

Purpose: To promote basic research in biomedicine by providing the best young, up-and-coming scientists with comprehensive support during their PhD phase.

More than a monthly stipend: The fellowship includes a competitive monthly stipend that’s initially granted for two years and that may be extended for up to another 12 months.

Participation in international scientific conferences can be supported. Additionally, fellowship holders have been offered personal support, seminars to discuss their projects, communicating training and alumni meetings, and consequently can become a part of a global network. Read below personal support and conditions.

Conditions for PhD Fellowships: Grantees can take up their Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) fellowship by sending us their signed fellowship conditions, desired start date, and details of their bank account. The fellowship expires if not taken up within 6 months of the date of the letter of approval.

Amount: The basic monthly stipend amounts to 1,550 euros. In most countries, fel-

lows are paid an additional flat rate of 150 euros per month to cover minor research-related costs (books, travel expenses, etc.). To adjust e.g. for differences in living costs, country-related premiums of up to 1,700 euros may be added (in the United Kingdom currently 700 euros, in the USA and Denmark 800 euros, in Australia, Israel, and Canada 500 euros, in Switzerland 1,700 euros, and in Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden 200 euros). Depending on the cost of living, all other countries are grouped into one of these categories. For example, an unmarried fellow working in Germany currently receives 1,900 euros, in the USA 2,500 euros, in the United Kingdom 2,400 euros, and in Switzerland 3,400 euros.

Furthermore, a spouse allowance of 200 euros, a child allowance of 200 euros per child and/or childcare allowance of up to 500 euros may be added depending on the personal situation.

The initially awarded stipend sum is based on the information provided in the application. The fellowship holder is obligated to inform BIF about any changes in his/her personal or financial circumstances (change of marital status, income of spouse, etc.) so that BIF can adjust the amount of the stipend. The stipend is transferred in euros by the middle of each month.

In addition, fellowship holders can apply for travel allowances to present their research projects at international scientific conferences, to participate in methods courses, or to perform research in cooperating laboratories.

Besides, BIF offers its fellows and alumni exclusive meetings, seminars, and trainings.

Duration: PhD fellowships are granted for 24 months and can be extended once for a maximum of 12 months. However, if the fellow began work on his/her PhD before taking up the fellowship, that period will be deducted from the maximum extension period. The beginning of the PhD work is considered by BIF to be the date of the final examination on the official certificate (e.g. BSc, MSc, Diploma, DEA, Licenciatura, Laurea) if the fellow continued to work in the same research group, or the date of arrival at the PhD laboratory if the fellow changed

In the event of illness, BIF usually continues payments for 2 months, after which time assistance would cease. Upon recovery, the fellowship may be extended by the period of absence due to illness.

Who Can Apply?

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards PhD fellowships to European citizens working in Europe or overseas, and to non-European citizens pursuing their PhD project in Europe. At the respective deadline (1 February, 1 June, 1 October) the university entrance qualification (secondary school leaving certificate/A-levels/university entrance test that permits to pursue first university studies after finishing school) must not have been achieved more than 8 years ago.

The PhD project must be experimental, in the field of basic biomedical research and aimed at elucidating basic biological phenomena of human life and acquiring new scientific knowledge. For a survey on the range of topics, please refer to the results of finished projects in FUTURA, the international journal of the foundation.

Natural scientists should have been awarded their ultimate university degree (diploma, MSc, BSc, or equivalent). Students who have not yet finished their MSc studies, i.e. who cannot provide their MSc certificate at the deadline, can only apply when they are able to hand in their certificate within 4 months after the deadline. Physicians, veterinary surgeons and pharmacists should have passed their state examinations.

At the deadline, the applicant should not have been working on his/her project for more than 6 months. BIF encourages applicants to apply for a fellowship when they are about to

begin their PhD work; preliminary project results are not expected from applicants. The beginning of the PhD project is considered by BIF to be: • the date of the final degree examination (e.g. BSc, MSc, Diploma, Licenciatura, Laurea) on the official certificate if the applicant continues to work in the same research group; or • the month of arrival at the laboratory in which the PhD project is pursued if the applicant changes his/her research group, irrespective of the project he/she starts to work on.

If a laboratory presents 2 candidates for a PhD fellowship at the same application deadline, only one of them can receive a fellowship. This is why we would highly recommend that candidates from the same laboratory apply at different deadlines.

The Scholarship is open to all commencing Indian students enrolled full time in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree.

he Faculty of Doctoral Studies and Research is the co-ordinating faculty for the PhD programmes run by the constituent institutes of the University. The University offers Full-time and Part-Time PhD programmes. The Admissions in various PhD programmes is scheduled annually and the Announcement in the Newspapers/Website is also published.

Introduction: Nirma University started Doctoral Programmes in the year 2003. The PhD Programmes in the University are offered by the Faculty of Technology & Engineering, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Architecture.

Eligibility Criteria: For Ph.D. (Full-Time & Part-Time Programme) Candidates for admission to the. programme shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions..

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Procedure for Admission The University will decide on an annual basis through Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Research a predetermined and manageable number of Ph.D. scholars to be admitted depending on the number of available Research Supervisors and other academic and physical facilities available, keeping in mind the norms regarding the scholar- teacher ratio The University will notify well in advance in the institutional website and through advertisement in at least two (2) national newspapers, of which at least one (1) shall be in the regional language, the number of seats for admission, subject/discipline-wise distribution of available seats, criteria for admission, procedure for admission and all other relevant information.

• Candidates, who intend to take admission for Ph.D. have to apply in a prescribed proforma. On the receipt of applications, an entrance test will be conducted for the eligible candidates irrespective of number of applications received, which will be followed by an interview by a Departmental Research Committee consisting of the 1) Dean of the faculty concerned, 2) Head of the Department(s)/ Area 3) probable Research Supervisor , 4) domain external expert. The domain expert will be decided by the Dean concerned. The selection criterion for the admission in Ph.D programme are as under • • An Entrance Test shall be qualifying with qualifying marks as 50%. The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

• The list of candidates clearing the entrance test shall be declared on the notice board/ website of the University.

• An interview/viva-voce to be organized by the University when the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/ area through a presentation before Department Research Committee specified under R.Ph.D 2.3.

• The candidates who qualify the UGC-NET (Including JRF)

UGC-CSIR NET (Including JRF) SLET/ GATE/GPAT with a valid score in terms of cutoff marks and duration, teacher fellowship holder or who have passed M.Phil programme shall be exempted from appearing in the entrance test and deemed to be qualified for personal interview.

The interview/viva-voce shall also consider the following aspects, viz. whether: • the candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research; • the research work can be suitably undertaken at the Institution; • the proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge. Final merit shall be based on the merit of interview/ viva-voce * Provided that for selection of candidates a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30% to the performance in the interview/ viva-voce shall be given. (*Likely to be implemented this year subject to approval of competent authority of the University) On the recommendation of the Departmental Research Committee and on the approval of Dean, Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Research the list of selected candidates will be displayed on the notice board / website of the University.

The allocation of Research Supervisor for a selected research scholar shall be decided by the Department Research Committee depending on

the number of scholars per Research Supervisor, the available specialization among the Supervisors and research interests of the scholars as indicated by them at the time of interview/viva voce The University shall maintain the list of all the Ph.D. registered students on its website on year-wise basis. The list shall include the name of the registered candidate, topic of his research, name of his supervisor/co-supervisor, date of enrolment/registration.

Attendance Requirement : A research scholar, who is pursuing course-work as a part of his Ph. D. Programme, is expected to have full (100%) attendance in each course.

However, a maximum of 30% attendance may be condoned by the Dean, Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Research for genuine reasons Course work Requirement : The course work shall be treated as prerequisite for Ph.D. preparation. A minimum of four credits shall be assigned to one or more courses on Research Methodology, which could cover areas such as quantitative methods, computer applications, research ethics and review of published research in the relevant field, training, fieldwork, etc.

Other courses shall be advanced level courses preparing the students for Ph.D. degree.

The Department where the scholar pursues his research shall prescribe the course(s) to him based on the recommendations of the Research Advisory Committee.

All candidates admitted to the Ph.D. programmes shall be required to complete the course work prescribed by

the Department within initial two semesters.

However, if the student is not in a position to complete the course work in the prescribed time limit as above, due to genuine reasons, may file an appeal and on the recommendation of the RAC, the Director General may grant extension up to additional one semester. Failing to complete the course work in the extended period will lead to cancellation of admission.

The course work result including Research methodology course/s shall be finalized after a combined assessment by the Research Advisory Committee and the Area/ Department and the final marks shall be sent to the Ph.D Section for preparing the result within reasonable time but not beyond one month after submission of course work by the student at the department.

A Ph.D. scholar has to obtain a minimum of 55% of marks or its equivalent grade in the UGC 7-point scale in the course work in order to be eligible to continue in the programme and submit the thesis.

A Ph.D scholar has to obtain a minimum of C+ grade in each course and minimum CPI 6.00 in order to be eligible to continue in the programme.

After successfully completing the course work, within three months, the Research scholar will be required to develop a comprehensive research proposal under the guidance of his/ her Research Supervisor and will be examined by Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and on the recommendation of the committee, the final shape of the research proposal along with tentative title of the topic of research shall be decided.

The wide interdisciplinary research areas are genomics and molecular medicine, genome informatics and structural biology, systems and chemical biology, respiratory disease biology and environmental biotechnology.
