become
pressing.
Investment
in
this
kind
of
infrastructure
serves
t w o p u r p o s e s : t o
minimise
the
risk
posed
to
communities
through
flood
prevention,
and
to
ensure
the
quality
of
life
of
people
living
in
these
a r e a s b y p r o v i d i n g
b e t t e r a c c e s s t o
essential
services.
T h e m o s t c o m m o n
strategies
employed
to
c o m b a t t h e i m p a c t o f
floods
in
Africa
are
the
c o n s t r u c t i o n o f
retention
dams,
such
as
t h e K i a m b e r e D a m i n
Kenya,
and
levees,
as
s e e n i n N a w a l ,
S e n e g a l T h e s e
i r r i g a t i o n s y s t e m s
c a p t u r e , s t o r e , a n d
utilise
water ,
while
also
providing
food,
protection,
and
access
to
sanitation
s y s t e m s . W h i l e t h e s e
p h y s i c a l s t r u c t u r a l
c h a n g e s h a v e b e e n
effective
in
some
cases,
they
have
not
been
able
to
keep
up
with
the
influx
of
p e o p l e , w h o s e d e m a n d
tr a d i ti o n a l m a te r i a l s a n d
p r o v i d e a s a f e a n d
c o m f o r t a b l e l i v i n g
e n v i r o n m e n t f o r
c o m m u n i t i e s .
I n v e s t m e n t s i n t h e s e
a r e a s c a n a l s o h e l p t o
r e d u c e w a t e r b o r n e
diseases,
as
well
as
food
in
place.
This
should
be
t a i l o r e d t o m e e t c u r r e n t
and
future
needs,
taking
i n t o a c c o u n t l o c a l
d e m o g r a p h i c s , w e a t h e r
p a t t e r n s , a n d o t h e r
environmental
factors.
In
addition,
there
should
be
systemwide
analyses
of
the
causes
and
effects

contaminants

water
can
be
removed
before

a r e a b l e t o w i t h s t a n d
fl o o d i n g b e t t e r t h a n
insecurity
caused

the

Additionally ,

infrastructure
projects
can
be
linked
to
larger
goals
of
e c o n o m i c d e v e l o p m e n t ,
s u c h a s c r e a t i n g
industries
in
rural
areas,

storage
capabilities,
