MILKING SPEED (MSPD)

Now Available For Holstein Males and Females

42% HERITABILITY

58% RELIABILITY (YOUNG GENOMIC BULLS)

67% RELIABILITY (PROGENY-TESTED BULLS)

The Milking Speed selection trait, abbreviated MSPD, is available for Holstein males and females starting in August 2025. The MSPD predicted transmitting ability (PTA) represents the average pounds of milk per minute expected of an animal’s offspring in a herd with average management conditions using a conventional milking system.

That means a bull or cow’s PTA value is the actual pounds of milk per minute their offspring is expected to produce, averaged over a 305-day record. At 42% heritability, MSPD is the most heritable trait of any of the 50 that the CDCB publishes.

The approximate average is 7 pounds per minute in U.S. Holsteins. For example, daughters of a Holstein bull with a MSPD PTA of 8 lbs/min would be expected to milk faster than the average cow in the population. Conversely, daughters of a Holstein bull with a MSPD PTA of 6 lbs/min would be expected to milk slower than average.

MSPD evaluations are developed using milking time and yield information reported from inline milk meters in traditional parlor systems. This differs from MSP evaluations produced by CDCB for the Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorn breeds and several international milking speed evaluations, which are calculated based on producer-reported perceptions of milking speed that are collected during type classification.

To eliminate the human factor of milking speed reporting and improve the accuracy of results, USDA’s Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory (AGIL) and the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) performed a study on how data from in-line milk meters could be used to calculate reliable genetic evaluations for milking speed.

It is important to note that the trait does not apply to automatic milking systems (AMS) at this time.

In addition to moving more cows through the parlor, selecting for faster-milking cows (or selecting against slower-milking cows) will create a more consistent herd and limit the disruptions that cows requiring special attention in the parlor can create.

BENEFITS OF THE TRAIT:

1. Faster-milking cows can be selected for, allowing more cows to be milked through the parlor in the same period of time.

2. Slower-milking cows can be selected against, improving herd consistency and limiting disruptions to the milking routine.

3. Greater parlor throughput is a more efficient use of labor and facilities.

WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE:

1. Objective measurement

2. Utilitzes in-line sensor technology

3. Standardized across data sources

4. Expressed in pounds-per-minute

CALVING TRAIT UPDATES EXPLAINED

On August 12, 2025, calving traits calculated by CDCB for Holstein and Brown Swiss will undergo both a phenotypic and genetic base change. This comes after the routine five-year base change was delayed for the April 2025 evaluations following unanticipated results. Further investigation has validated the initial calculations.

In the calving ease and stillbirth evaluations a sire-maternal grandsire threshold model is used, where outputs are expressed in terms of probabilities or frequencies of difficult calvings (or stillbirth). In this model, the observed calving difficulty (or stillbirth) is understood as a combination of two factors: genetics (which we aim to improve through selection) and environment (management factors such as feeding and gestation practices). Environmental effects are incorporated into the final PTA because, for example, sires’ daughters calving in a“poor” environment will generally experience more difficult calvings, while daughters calving in a “good”environment will tend to have easier births.

As this average approaches zero, PTA variability has decreased as a consequence. The low incidence of reported dystocic calvings naturally constrains PTAs since values below 0% are biologically impossible. Now is not the time to become lax in selection criteria for SCE, but producers should not be alarmed if minimal variability is seen across bulls in the population.

The calving traits differ from most other traits that CDCB evaluates because they are categorical and not continuous –a cow either experiences dystocia or not; there is nothing in between.

Sire Calving Ease (SCE)

Predicts the tendency of service sires to produce offspring that are delivered easily, expressed as the percentage of births of bull calves coded “difficult” for first calf (primiparous) heifers compared to other A.I. bulls born in the reference year. Beginning in August 2025, this is set to 2020.

Daughter Calving Ease (DCE)

Predicts the tendency of the daughters of sires to have offspring that are delivered easily, expressed as the percentage of births of bull calves that are “difficult” in first calf (primiparous) heifers compared to other A.I. bulls born in the reference year. Beginning in August 2025, this is set to 2015.

The Data That Supports Calving Traits

Sire Stillbirth (SSB)

Predicts the tendency of service sires to produce offspring that are stillborn (dead at birth or within 48 hours of birth), expressed as percent compared to other A.I. bulls born in the reference period. Beginning in August 2025, this is set to 2020.

Daughter Stillbirth (DSB)

Predicts the tendency of the daughters of sires to have offspring that are stillborn (dead at birth or within 48 hours of birth), expressed as percent compared to other A.I. bulls born in the reference period. Beginning in August 2025, this is set to 2015.

Calving traits are calculated using producer-recorded data stored in farm software, processed at a Dairy Records Processing Center, and shared with the National Cooperator Database.

Current (old) phenotypic base

From April 2020 to April 2025, the old phenotypic base consisted of the average calving difficulty on first parity cows for bulls born in 2015 (SCE, 2.29%) and maternal grandsires born in 2010 (DCE, 2.71%)

August 2025 (new) phenotypic base update

The upcoming phenotypic mean (the new phenotypic base) will shift to the average calving difficulty of first-parity cows for bulls born in 2020 and maternal grandsires born in 2015, which will be approximately 1.36% and 1.76%, respectively.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE STRATEGY

RobotPRO identifies sires that transmit the desired traits for robotic milking systems. These sires are selected by focusing on components and milk yield, udder health, longevity and durability, as well as functional udder traits.

“Select Sires is continually reviewing designation criteria to meet the evolving needs of dairy farmers. In August 2024, the formula was updated to include Canadian evaluations for Udder Floor and Milking Temperament. Cows with extreme reverse tilt make it difficult for robot sensors to locate rear teats. We’ve also heard the concerns from dairy farmers regarding nervous cows. They require more time for the robot to attach the units and more time for re-attachments. Adding consideration for these traits will improve the usefulness of this designation in dairies around the world.”

Offspring will be robot-reliable Geared toward critical robot management factors Formulated with an emphasis on health and wellness RobotPRO assures correct Rear Teat Placement and Teat Length for your robots.

CCR CE

CCR (Cow Conception Rate)

Lactating cow’s ability to conceive defined as a percentage of inseminated cows that become pregnant at each service; a CCR of 1 implies that daughters of this bull are 1% more likely to conceive when inseminated than daughters of a bull with an evaluation of 0.

SCE (Sire Calving Ease)

Sires that can be used with confidence for easier calvings, the lower the calving ease score the easier the expected calving. Currently 2.3 SCE is considered breed average. Listed below are some of our most elite SCE bulls, with plenty more identified within the directory.

SCR

SCR (Sire Conception Rate)

Sire Conception Rate is not a genetic trait. SCR measures the semen fertility of a bull. An SCR of +1.0 indicates a 1% increase in conception rate when compared to the average sire.

SUPPLEMENTARY BULLS

Working with WWS Advisors has certainly helped with correction of traits. The two main ones we started with were Mastitis and Feet & Legs, and we have seen a lot of improvement in these areas.

The cows have to do a fair bit of walking, and we are seeing a lot less lameness.

Working with WWS has been very good and they have some bulls that are working very, very well in the herd.

Showbox Sires’

The Showcase program is anchored by tremendous maternal lines and delivers a sire lineup that will drive the genetic advancement of your herd for multiple generations while supporting your goals of creating Excellent cows. The lineup was built on the concept of balanced sires that excel in not only high PTAT values but are complete in all categories.

We value sires that have the right conformation but also improve health and fitness, add production and create the kind of cow that can thrive in any environment around the world. In our experiences, these attributes define a “crossover” sire. The term we use to decribe Showcase sires like 250HO12961 DOC who created the crossover standard nearly a decade ago.
