Company Corner

A

Message from our President

Dear W.W. Gay Family,

I’m thrilled to be writing this update for the 1st issue of our company newsletter, “The Pipeline”. This was an important project for our new Marketing Manager Emily Vurnakes, and she has been hard at work to get this out. Not only is this a great communication tool to keep us all connected, but it is also a fantastic way to spotlight our hardworking employees! Be on the lookout for a new issue in your inboxes the first Friday of each month.

Next, I have to say a big “thank you” for your participation in Mr. Bill Gay Day on October 15. It was wonderful to see everyone come together across the offices (and via live stream) to make the day special for family, friends and employees. I could not have asked for a better celebration to honor Mr. Gay. For a wrap-up of that special event, please refer to pages 8-10.

I would also like to take this time to celebrate the great accomplishments of two employees in the Jacksonville office, Troy Lambert and Jorge Cardona. They both have been recognized for their efforts in the workforce, proving that we really do have the best employees in the business. To read more on their recognitions, please refer to page 5.

In project news, the Baptist NICU project is beginning to ramp up. Before this project officially kicked off, I had the opportunity to visit two different NICU’s in the area and I can say that each of them amazed me. I feel honored that we as a company are involved in this exciting project, as the purpose of the finished space is to provide families a safe, comfortable environment to spend time with their babies fighting for life. The FIS Headquarters job is also getting started and we are honored to add another high-profile project to the Jacksonville skyline. Be sure to flip through the newsletter as each office will continue to provide updates on their exciting projects.

In closing, we as a company have overcome many challenges in 2020. To say that I am proud of how we all charged forward is an understatement. We are all a part of something special and the overwhelming support regarding our recovery from the fire is a result of our founder being so generous to our communities. We have an incredible legacy to honor and carry forward for generations to come. This year requires us to accept change and persevere. These are exciting times at W. W. Gay and I cannot wait to see what the future holds. We are grateful you are a part of all to come!

Thank you for always being the best in the business!

Employee News & Updates

In Memoriam

We are saddened to announce the passing of long-time employee Douglas "Doug" Montgomery who passed away Friday morning, November 6. Doug was a loyal and valued employee for 35 years in Jacksonville's Carpenter Shop. The W. W. Gay Family sends their thoughts and prayers to Doug's family.

Employee News

As many of you know, our company has been the beneficiary of 48 years of dedicated service from Mr. Terry Shepard. He has shown us the value of ambition, dependability and a strong work ethic and for that we are eternally grateful. He has served as a mentor, leader and friend to hundreds here at W. W. Gay who sincerely appreciate his guidance and support. Terry's impact on the company is deep and his signature is on numerous high profile projects throughout the city of Jacksonville’s skyline. He has either been on the install team, sketching a solution, checking his charts, or diagnosing a manufacturer’s chiller issue before they could send out a factory trained technician. His reach exceeds our company as he has been an instrumental part of Local 234’s growth as a member and faithfully served on the apprenticeship committee. He’s a trusted resource to our engineering community and his expertise is sought by team members, industry partners, and clients alike. Retirement awaits and Terry has selected December 1st to begin his next chapter. Please join us in wishing him the very best.

Terry’s involvement in almost every aspect of our Jacksonville operation has left some big shoes to fill and Tom Smith has agreed to accept the challenge. Our Gainesville operation has thrived under Tom’s leadership since 2012 and we are excited to announce that he will rejoin the Jacksonville leadership team to serve as Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations. Tom has been with W. W. Gay for 29 years and has been instrumental in developing the talented team, client relationships and business processes necessary to build our strong presence in Gainesville. Please join us in welcoming Tom Smith back to Jacksonville as a key member of our leadership team!

"The Pipeline" Information

Watch your inboxes for a new issue of "The Pipeline" the first Friday of each month! We hope this company newsletter not only keeps us all connected, but helps relay important and fun information to each of you. Do you have information or photos of your project you would like included in a future newsletter? Do you have an employee who has gone above and beyond that deserves to be recognized? If so, please forward any recent employee success stories, project updates or photos to Marketing Manager Emily Vurnakes at evurnakes@wwgmc.com. Thank you!

Staff Shout-Outs

Great Jobs & Accolades

Congratulations are in order for two of our hardworking employees in the Jacksonville office!

Troy Lambert (right) from the Engineering group in Jacksonville passed his LEED AP Building + Construction exam and became LEED certified in late October. In order to even sit for this exam, Troy was required to receive another certification first. Including studying and both exams, the entire process took over a year to complete.

This is a huge deal as the exam only has a 30% pass rate! Troy is also the only LEED certified employee in Jacksonville at the moment.

Congratulations and great job Troy!

In September, Safety Specialist Jorge Cardona was recognized by Construction Safety Week magazine for his safety efforts in the construction industry. Jorge was just one of four people selected out of many Safety Specialists from across the country.

Jorge was nominated by Johnson & Johnson, which is a great honor in itself as they have some of the strictest safety standards in the country. He was able to share his story about what it means to be "Built on Safety":

"This year has not been easy for anyone. On every project, we must take steps to protect our workers during COVID-19. Wearing face masks while working outside for 8 or more hours is difficult, and added heat stress dangers can be overhelming. We take our time to thank personnel for doing a good job, to show how important they are, and that their contributions are noted. Every step we take is to keep the jobsite family safe so we can return home to our families safe".

Great job, Jorge!

Hot Diggity Dog

A Birthday Bash to Celebrate and Remember Mr. Gay

As many of you were aware, Thursday, October 15 would have been Mr. Gay’s 94th birthday. To celebrate his special day, it was important for the company to dedicate a day that allowed employees to come together and honor him. This vision began as a small event where everyone could share their favorite stories about Mr. Gay over cobbler (his favorite dessert). Little did we know that this would quickly morph into a much bigger event. In the Jacksonville location alone, there were over 200 guests that included family, friends, employees and other special guests. Gainesville and Orlando gathered at their own locations and tuned in to the festivities via live stream.

While the main focus was on celebrating Mr. Gay, it was also important for us to look back with gratitude. Members of the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department (JFRD) and Miller Electric, who were instrumental in our road to recovery from the fire, were presented with special plaques. As you can see from the photos on the next page, each of their plaques were made of wood from Mr. Gay's office, charred from the fire.

We also had many special guest speakers in attendance to remind us of the impact Mr. Gay had on the Jacksonville community. Michael Biagini from Scherer Construction spoke on behalf of the local YMCA about a special "W. W. Bill Gay Community Impact Award". The goal of this award is to honor the life of Mr. Gay and raise funds for the Winston YMCA to further his impact in the community. This will be met by hosting an annual event to recognize an individual who best personifies the characteristics of Mr. Gay. Ike Sherlock of the West Jacksonville Rotary Club also presented an award to the family from the Boy Scouts of America. Current Duval County Clerk of the Circuit & County Courts, Ronnie Fussell was also in attendance to officially declare October 15 as Mr. Bill Gay Day in the city of Jacksonville!

Kimberly Hansen & Laura Collins (Baptist Health) with Paul Jones

In all of this, we knew the best way to honor Mr. Gay was to give back. When this event was announced to our employees, we began collecting children's books to be donated in his name to a local Jacksonville hospital. Long-time friend of Mr. Gay, Kimberly Hansen was overjoyed to receive hundreds of books for Baptist Health!

What a special day it was! Thank you to each and every one of you for your help in making this 1st annual event so successful. We know Mr. Gay would have been proud and echoed us in saying, "You really are the best in the business!"

Employee Spotlight

Our first Employee Spotlight, Tom Smith, began his career with W. W. Gay back in 1991. Much of those 29 years have been spent between the Jacksonville and Gainesville offices, heavily involved in all aspects of the business. During his 5-year apprenticeship, Tom worked in many divisions including A/C, Controls, Plumbing and Test & Balance. After his apprenticeship, he began in Project Management and was then relocated to the Gainesville office in 1997. He was promoted to Vice President in 2002 and Director of Operations in 2012, where he oversaw all aspects of the business. As many of you are aware, Tom now finds himself back in Jacksonville to head up Operations. “I’m really excited to be back where I started”, says Tom. “The most important thing to me has always been to continue Mr. Gay’s legacy. My sole purpose is to be of service to this company in any way that I can. I appreciate the past and look forward to the future, too”.

Tom is a true Florida native, born and raised in Jacksonville. He gets most of his values from his mother, a Godly woman, who is also a Jacksonville native. After graduating high school, Tom served our country in the United States Army Aviation for 4 years. During his service in Europe, he also received his Associates Degree from the University of Maryland. Upon returning home, he began studies at Southern Illinois University for a business degree in Workforce Management. Tom is also a state-certified Mechanical, Plumbing and Underground Utility Contractor.

Tom and his wife Nora have been married for 35 years and met in Holland while they were both serving in the military. The couple have two daughters, Danielle and Kayla, but Danielle tragically lost her life in a car accident in 2008. Danielle was always extremely passionate about the game of golf, which had become an important past-time of the family. Before her passing, she played collegiately at the University of West Florida. When it was time for her sister Kayla to attend college, she wanted nothing more than to play golf at the same university so she could finish what her sister started. That dream came true as she, too, played collegiately at the University of West Florida. She just recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction and now works in the industry in Pensacola. She is getting married this month and the proud parents are looking forward to the big day on November 14.

Tom is heavily involved with his church and teaches men’s Bible study classes in his spare time. Besides church, some of his passions include reading, motor sports and running. He and his wife are currently working on their biggest “bucket list” item, which is to run a 5k race in every state. As of now, they have 19 states checked off the list, with their sights set on the next. Their goal is to visit Alaska for the 25th and Hawaii for their 50th and final state. Alaska and the North Pole are already on the books for June 2021, with six states in between now and then.

Simply put, Tom loves working for W. W. Gay. He credits the success of the company to those working tirelessly out in the field and in the offices across the state. “Mr. Gay always taught me that leadership isn’t the power you have over people, it’s the power in which you serve them”, says Tom. “If you want to succeed, you have to serve people and make your life about serving others”.

Jacksonville Office Update

A big job for the Jacksonville Industrial team has been a 20-story mixed-used building on Water Street in Tampa. The photos below show the crew setting 3 dimensional architectural panels on the building. Pre-cast is scheduled to be completed next month. Stay tuned for more updates on this project in the months to come!

The Pipeline 12

Gainesville Office Updates

Our Gainesville crew is making moves! The exciting news across the office is that everyone will finally be under one roof! Since the office opened, all facets of the business have been in separate locations, making it difficult for continuity and communication. Construction began on the new building earlier this year and while COVID-19 has presented difficulties, the team have been slowly making the transition. The new space will make room for Construction, Industrial and Service departments. Not only does this move help with collaboration across projects, but it is also presenting the team with more space to be used for meeting facilities and conference rooms.

In other big news, we are so excited to have Chris Stalnecker stepping up as the new Director of Gainesville Operations. With Tom Smith's move back to the Jacksonville team, Chris was thrilled for the opportunity to fill his shoes in Gainesville. Chris is from Lake Butler, FL and has been with the company since 1998. He graduated from UA 234 Apprenticeship school in 2003. Shortly after finishing his apprenticeship, he became a Superintendent and held that position from 2003-2012. From there, he was a Field Operations Manager for 8 years before being asked to take over the Director position this past October. Chris looks forward to adding value to others and hopes to build the Gainesville operation into an even stronger foundation for generations to come. His motto is "Love God, Love People & Serve Others".

We are so thrilled for Chris and can't wait to see how he grows the Gainesville operations! Congratulations!

Orlando Office Update

The Orlando team has a big project on their hands! They were recently awarded both the Mechanical and Plumbing for the SunTrax facility in Auburndale, FL. For our end of the project, John Songer will be the Project Manager with Delbert Jones as the project Foreman. The project, headed up by Alston Construction, sits on 475 Acres inside a 2.25 mile oval track for highspeed testing of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV’s) . CAV’s will be tested, advanced and readied for full-scale public deployment at this facility starting in the Winter of 2021. Located off I-4 between Orlando and Tampa, SunTrax is a large-scale, cutting-edge facility being developed by the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, dedicated to the research, development and testing of emerging transportation technologies in safe and controlled environments. The jobsite consists of five large buildings. This includes the Arrival and Conference Center (20,00 sq ft), Administration Building, Maintenance Building (27,000 sq ft), two large workshops (56,000 sq ft each) and a Central Utilities Building. There are also seven smaller support buildings, a Guard Shack, Fueling and Car Wash stations and a 70 foot high Observation Tower.

The CEP consists of two 485 ton chillers, two cooling towers and four chilled water pumps supplying 12” Chilled Water Mains. The Pipe Fabrication Shop in Jacksonville will be prefabbing all the mechanical pipe for this building. The Arrival and Conferencing building has three air handlers, exposed double wall spiral ductwork, linear grills and a kitchen area. The Administration building has two air handlers, Liebert CRAC units, a kitchen area and two large gang bathrooms. This building also has exposed double wall spiral round and oval ductwork.

The Maintenance Building consists of five large bays with numerous bathrooms, Fan Coil Units and a large Outside Air Unit. There are two large workshop buildings that are mirror images of each other. Each Workshop Building has nine service bays with bathrooms and Fan Coil Units. Each building also has an Outside Air Unit and numerous trench drains and oil interceptors. The Car Wash and Fueling Stations also have large oil interceptors and trench drains. The Observation Tower has one roof top unit, one Air Handler and four DX Split Systems. The Drafting Department in Jacksonville and Orlando are preparing the shopdrawings.

We can't wait for updates on this exciting project with the Orlando team!

Office Update

Exciting news with our newest office location in Pensacola! Graham McGeorge, who was based out of the Jacksonville office for years, will be heading up the operation in the Panhandle. He and his wife made the move to Pensacola at the beginning of July. As of now, Graham is a team of one until Justin Manley joins him in early December.

While he begins to build up the area, Graham will be calling and bidding work in the following facilities: Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, Destin Rehabilitation Center, North Okaloosa Medical Center and Pensacola State College. He is also answering service calls for accounts already in the area including BBVA and Dornoch Medical Systems. Some of these calls take him as far as Alabama!

Graham already has a good-sized project remodeling the ER Department at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola. However, the three-year project that was slated to start earlier this year, has now been pushed back to March 2021 due to COVID-19. He also hopes to establish a military market and is currently bidding a project at Eglin Air Force Base. Other opportunities in the area include NAS Pensacola, Correy Station and Hurlburt Field, just to name a few.

Graham is excited about the opportunity for the company to be in Pensacola and welcomes the challenges ahead. His goal is to build this new division from the ground up and help make W. W. Gay a recognized contractor in the Panhandle.

Great job, Graham! We can't wait to see updates and photos from Pensacola!

Florida Mechanical Company Update

It's no surprise that 2020 has had a major impact on our lives. Business at Florida Mechanical was not immune! Jobs were delayed, work was cancelled, budgets were cut and any new construction came to a screeching halt. However, new relationships and repurposed equipment paved the way for new opportunities. Florida Mechanical set out to keep their equipment moving despite crane service being set to idle. In the past, their extensive fleet of semi-trucks and trailers have primarily served their internal needs of mobilizing and demobilizing Florida Mechanical's cranes. Well, not anymore! They now offer full-service crane transport to include complete assembly and disassembly, as well as, heavy equipment transport. Experience and knowledge has quickly gained Florida Mechanical a distinguished reputation among heavy equipment dealers and customers throughout the Southeast.
