Company Corner

A Message from our CEO

Dear W. W. Gay Family,

Let me be one of the first to wish you a Happy New Year!

December was a special month, and I could not imagine closing out the year any other way. It was so exciting to celebrate Christmas with each of you and to see our company continue to carry on long-standing traditions. The Gainesville office enjoyed a catered lunch in the afternoon and had some fun axe throwing at The Hatchetbury in the evening. Over in Orlando, they celebrated in the Azalea Lodge at the beautiful Mead Botanical Garden, complete with prizes and special awards. Jacksonville was forced to make drastic changes this year due to the fire, but everyone had an amazing time celebrating off property with two separate parties: one for families in the afternoon and an adult only party in the evening. Both parties featured a special performance from Master Illusionist Jackson Rayne, all the way from Las Vegas! The magic of Christmas and Santa Claus was certainly felt at the special family event. To see photos from each of the Christmas parties, please see page 10.

As many of you may know, Mrs. Bobbie Thompson officially retired last month after 40 years with the W. W. Gay Family. It is important for me to acknowledge the years of service and dedication she gave to not only this company, but also to Mr. Gay, who she cared deeply for. I thank her for her loyalty and wish her a very happy retirement.

With 2020 officially behind us, I am looking forward to everything that the new year will bring. From the COINS implementation to our new IT company, and the many projects on our schedule, I know 2021 will show the fruits of our hard work from this past year. Probably some of the most exciting news to come is that schematic concepts have been created for the future building in Jacksonville. We are on schedule to break ground this year and will share more information as it becomes available.

In closing, we all know that giving back to the community is a vital role of every W. W. Gay employee. I would love nothing more than to see that continue in 2021. I challenge each of you to find a charity or organization that you are passionate about and volunteer your time. This new year will be one of service and our time to give back to those who need it most.

Thank you for always being the best in the business!

In her letter she explained how the project presented many challenges, including the reality of COVID-19. Even through the many changes and difficult conditions, the team was still able to complete the project 6 weeks early. Way to go and congratulations to the following team members for going above and beyond:

Rick McManus, Project Manager

John Russell, Superintendent

Bill Childers, Superintendent

Stephen Napoli, General Foreman

A big shout-out to the Jacksonville team working with Black Knight Financial Services (pictured left). They received multiple praises from within the company for their hard work and professionalism:

"I would like to personally thank you and your guys for all of your hard work this year. The W. W. Gay team has been here throughout the pandemic and have shown true professionalism throughout all the changes and freezes we had throughout the year. Our company replaced 5 CRAC units this year, wrapping up our big project of finally eliminating the Glycol loop system from our infrastructure. This was done with no issues and no impact felt to the business! This is why we continue to work with the best quality vendors in the business!"

"You guys are the best in the business and our own BK Gay Mechanical team is second to none, hands down. They have consistently delivered and gone above and beyond the call of duty on so many occasions for us. Our success is a tribute to the dedication of your Mechanical team especially in light of the COVID-19 issue that we all face each day. I know I can speak for Pete and our entire team and say that the BK Critical Facilities Team greatly appreciates your service and dedication to our organization!"

Giving back to the community has always been an important part of the culture here at W. W. Gay. During the holiday season each year, one of our own employees, Steven Jimenez (pictured left) helps collect new and unwrapped toys for the Marine Toys for Tots campaign. A Marine Veteran himself, Steve spearheads the toy drive at W. W. Gay and helps distribute these to families in need. Other donations are collected across Clay County and select Duval County businesses.

During the month of December, the local Marines distributed bags of toys to over 160 families and select elementary schools across a 50-mile radius! Donations continued to pour in throughout the month with the final donations given out to families just in time for the Christmas holiday. With so many families facing financial hardships at this time, we know each family was incredibly grateful for every donation.

Great job to Steve, the local Marines and all those who helped make a difference during the holiday season!

Employee Spotlight

Danny Ranard out of our Gainesville office is the first Employee Spotlight of the new year. While he began his apprenticeship in 2010, Danny knew from an early age that he wanted to work for W. W. Gay. Being a part of the W. W. Gay family is something that runs in the Ranard family as his father has been with the Gainesville office for over 20 years. His two brothers work for the Gainesville office, too. After his 5-year apprenticeship, Danny turned out in 2015 and began his career as a Job Site Foreman. He spent close to 5 years in that position before he was asked to take on the Superintendent role in 2019. This past October, Danny saw another advancement in his career as he was promoted to Field Operations Manager. With this new role, Danny oversees the manpower in Gainesville and ensures that each job is staffed adequately. In addition to this, he also handles many prebids and is responsible for solving any jobsite issues.

Danny is a Florida native, born and raised in Lake Butler. He has always enjoyed the small-town vibe and loves where he lives. Danny and his wife Summer met when they were just 19 years old

and have been married now for 7 years. The couple have two beautiful daughters, Autumn who is 6 years old and Ember who is 3 years old. The family love to be outdoors and take every possible opportunity to be together. Danny takes the girls riding on their Polaris Ranger, which has become a favorite family pastime. When he isn’t working out in the field or spending time with his family, Danny loves to hunt and fish. He belongs to a hunting club in Lake Butler where he has enjoyed meeting people with the same love of the game. He tries to travel out of state for hunting trips once or twice a year, with South Carolina being the most recent getaway late last year.

When asked about the most exciting job he has had the opportunity to work on, he jumped at the opportunity to talk about the North Florida Regional Medical Center (NFRMC) project. This was a vertical expansion and was featured in last month’s Pipeline for the Gainesville Office update. He has worn many hats during this job as his promotion from Foreman to Superintendent happened right in the middle of the project. While it was difficult to adjust on-site, he is thankful as it has allowed him to see many aspects of the process. This was also a job that included full fabrication, which was a first experience for him. He was able to make a trip to Jacksonville to not only oversee the fabrication process, but to also take a dive into the Bluebeam program. That was a great learning experience for him and really opened his eyes to how much up-front planning takes place.

W. W. Gay has been a part of Danny’s life for as long as he can remember, so he feels grateful to have found a career that he loves. “The family atmosphere here is, by far, the greatest part about working for this company,” he says. “No matter if you are in the field or the office, everyone is family. It doesn’t matter what time; you could call anyone here and know that they would always make themselves available to help you”.

We’re so glad you’re part of our Family, Danny! Keep up the great work!

Christmas Parties

Jacksonville, Gainesville & Orlando

The Christmas spirit was in the air this year across all offices! Long-lasting traditions were upheld while some new ones began, too. Gainesville had a full day of celebrations with a catered lunch in the afternoon and a fun evening axe throwing at The Hatchetbury (photos below). Orlando went off-property to celebrate in style at the beautiful Azalea Lodge at Mead Botanical Gardens, complete with prizes and special awards (photos on page 12). Due to the fire, Jacksonville had a completely new experience and also went off-property with two separate parties: one for families in the afternoon and an adult only party in the evening. Santa made a guest appearance at the family party, and Master Illusionist Jackson Rayne entertained all at both parties (photos on page 13).

Jacksonville Office Update

Members of the Jacksonville office, Tom Smith and Peggy Tipping, were thrilled to donate their time this past holiday season at Sidewalk Funday School's annual "Happy Birthday Jesus" event. Sidewalk Funday School, A Children's Church, Inc. is a nonprofit outreach ministry who aims to reach out and serve children in need across six Jacksonville locations. Kimberly Hansen, System Director of Design and Construction at Baptist Health and long-time partner of W. W. Gay, has been President of Sidewalk Funday School since 2014.

Over 450 children were bussed in from different areas of the city for the "Happy Birthday Jesus" event, which was held at First Baptist Church in downtown Jacksonville on Saturday, December 5, 2020. The special day featured fun-filled activities for kids of all ages, including Bible readings, a Christmas-themed musical, and even a surprise visit from Santa. Upon conclusion of the musical, each child received a present according to their age.

What a wonderful event to help spread the meaning and joy of Christmas!
