Dear W. W. Gay Family,
I must begin by graciously thanking each of you who played a role in the YMCA’s Celebration of Life for Mr. Gay. Whether you attended the watch party in Jacksonville or tuned in virtually, it was certainly a special evening. While most of us know the amazing man that Mr. Gay was, it is always remarkable to me the impact one person can have on an entire company and community. Through his giving spirit and selfless heart, he changed the trajectory of so many lives. He meant so much to so many. Whether it was advice or simple words of encouragement, Mr. Gay always gave you just what you needed. True to his craft, he laid a strong foundation for each of us to build upon and grow from principles that were so close to his heart. There is no way of knowing how many people he influenced, but I do know this: His legacy will never be forgotten, and we will continue to carry the torch for him.
With that being said, the month of April is upon us! This is always a special time of year for me due in large part to my love for the game of golf. If you follow the sport, you know that The Masters is scheduled for the first full week in April and is the most iconic tournament in championship golf. The Masters is always held at the same location, The Augusta National, in Augusta, GA. “A Tradition unlike any other” is now the trademarked phrase and wonderfully describes the entire experience which cannot be fully appreciated by just watching on television. You must see it with your own eyes to truly grasp its greatness.
My love of golf goes way back and is rooted in my DNA. My dad grew up in Augusta, so I was lucky enough to attend the tournament many years of my life. It became a tradition for father and son to step out on that pristine green grass together every April. Each year as the tournament draws near, it always sparks the thought of tradition and excellence. The Masters is a perfectly run tournament with extreme focus on every detail, setting the standard for all tournaments and courses to try to achieve. The question for me has always been this: How are we at W. W. Gay like The Masters?
I read a great article recently that discussed the qualities that make The Masters such a great example of excellence and it made me realize that I already knew the answer to my question. Greatness does not accidentally happen by chance. Excellence comes only with constant commitment and meticulous attention to detail. I have an admiration for sports dynasties because I love watching history being made in my lifetime. Dynasties are rich in history, deliberate in thought and hold their people accountable. They may do the same thing everyone else does, yet the culture and foundation of dynasties are immensely different.
Does this sound familiar to you? These are the exact pillars that Mr. Gay built this company upon. There is no denying that Mr. Gay created a dynasty here. Our culture is unlike any other and that is something to be proud of and embrace! Remember that there is only one path to greatness, but all dynasties follow that path. Let’s continue on that path and keep building our dynasty!
Thank you for always being the best in the business!
Big news for the entire W. W. Gay Family! We are so pleased to announce that W. W. Gay has earned the MCAA/CNA Safety Excellence Award for 2020! This is the top safety award given by MCAA in the "Size Category 5: More Than 1 Million Work Hours".
This fiercely competitive program results in only the best of the best competing for the awards. Participants are required to describe their respective safety programs in detail, why they believe they deserve the award, and how they achieved safety excellence. Another portion of the selection process is the company's Experience Modification Rate (EMR), which takes into account the number of claims/injuries a company has had in the past. The industry standard for this rating is a "1" (one) and we as a company have a rating of .66. Wow!
The Safety Awards Selection Taskforce, which is led by CNA, carefully evaluates each submission looking for safety leadership, an advanced safety culture, effective leading indicators of safety performance, and innovative safety initiatives that helped the company achieve an exceptionally high degree of safety excellence.
Safety has always been a priority here at W. W. Gay and we are so proud of this accomplishment! Congratulations everyone!
In March we were also named one of Northeast Florida's Top Contractors by the Jacksonville Daily Record (pictured right)! The inaugural Top Contractors edition was based on the area's top contractors 2020 revenue. To make the list, companies had to be based in the five-county Northeast Florida area of Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns.
The list consisted of over 30 top contractors, with W. W. Gay coming in at #8! Congratulations to our team!
After a lifetime of work and 31 years of service, Harold "Curly" Richardson (Jacksonville) has decided to hang up his tool belt and retire!
Curly began his career over 40 years ago as a member of the Carpenters Union. He spent 5 years in the apprenticeship program and eventually became a Journeyman Carpenter. He went on to join the W. W. Gay family in 1990 at the Anheuser Busch Brewery in Jacksonville.
After nearly 4 years of working on large civic jobs, he transitioned into the main office to run the Civic Group where he excelled as a leader. He helped grow this group into a 65-man industry to support those out on the jobsites. Throughout his career, Curly served as an officer in the Carpenters Union and still sits as a Trustee on the Pension and Welfare Funds board.
To celebrate his long career and many contributions to the company, a retirement luncheon was held at the North Florida Carpenter's Local 702 at the end of March. Long-time friend James Banks, who is the Executive Secretary-Treasurer for the Florida Carpenters Regional Council, was also in attendance and spoke of their many memories over his career.
Thank you for your dedication, Curly and we wish you the best in your retirement!
As many of you know, we started the company-wide Biggest Loser Challenge back in January to help encourage living a healthy lifestyle. The challenge was based on total percentage of weight lost during the competition period. Weekly weigh-ins took place each Friday morning, with the final weigh-in taking place on Friday, March 26.
After 10 weeks, the results are finally in and we have our Biggest Loser!
A big congratulations to our overall winner across all offices, Aaron Scarberry. Aaron works for FMS Maintenance in Jacksonville and lost a whopping 17.9% for a total of 46 pounds! Wow, great job Aaron!
Ryan Sullivan was the Biggest Loser for the Gainesville office, losing 13.028% for a total of 28.4 pounds, while Linda Bostic was the leader in Orlando with a total 10.196% lost. Way to go Ryan and Linda!
All of the participants worked extremely hard over the last two months and it was so wonderful to see their progress. Hard work sure does pay off! We're so proud of each person that participated!
Andrew Brown (pictured left) has been working on 36" welds using the the Novarc "robot" welding machine in the Pipe Fabrication Shop. This work is being done for a project at the FPL Martin Power Plant in Indiantown, FL.
Each weld has the possibility of some sort of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and take an average of one hour each to complete.
Great work, Andrew!
Jason Conn (Jacksonville) is currently an Ironworker with the Ironworkers/Precast division at Naval Station Mayport.
Walsh, the general contractor, publishes a weekly newsletter that contains updates on all current projects. Jason was spotlighted as a featured sub-contractor in a recent issue! His piece from their newsletter is pictured left.
Way to represent the team, Jason!

Within the Orlando team, our April Employee Spotlight is best known for the many years he has dedicated to all things Disney. Charles McLaurin, affectionately known as “Mac”, has been blessed with a long career at W. W. Gay that began back in 1995. Before his recent promotion to Disney Superintendent, Mac spent nearly 26 years overseeing projects awarded to our team, many of them on Disney property. As Supervisor, he was responsible for everything from planning the work, initial layouts to ordering material. You name it, Mac was guaranteed to get it done! The high praise he receives from the folks at Walt Disney World and his peers within the company can easily be attributed to his hard work and constant commitment.
Before his career began with W. W. Gay, Mac felt called to serve our country, so he courageously joined the United States Navy, and was stationed in Charleston, SC. A Desert Storm veteran, he spent 5 years doing “damage control” as a plumber and fire fighter in whatever facet that was needed. Mac would tell you that the best part of his time in the service was crossing paths with Connie, who would ultimately become his wife. The happy couple met in 1992 and, without wasting any time, were married in 1993. Connie had family in Florida, so a move to the Sunshine State was the obvious next destination for the new chapter of their life. Their 3 sons, Patric, Skyle and Charles also work for W. W. Gay in Orlando.
Originally from Mississippi, Mac has always enjoyed life in the south. Whether it is turkey hunting in the Ocala National Forest or fresh-water fishing, Mac prefers to be outdoors. Almost 90% of Mac’s family still live in Mississippi, so he and his youngest son make time to go back and visit. Mac and his wife share a passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and love to get out and ride. Each year they hop in the saddle of their own his and her bikes and take a soul-inspiring ride to Sturgis, SD, home to the long-running Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Over the nearly three-week trip, Mac and Connie are at their happiest just cruising the open air, taking in every beautiful sight along the way.
Throughout his career, Mac has had the opportunity to work on many unique and interesting projects, his very first being the Old Key West at SeaWorld. He also had a hand in the Sunshine Seasons restaurant at Epcot and even helped bring Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park to life. Mac loves that he gets to share the incredible work environment of W. W. Gay with his three sons, and attests that it really is “such a special place”. Mac claims, “The family atmosphere that Mr. Gay created is why I have continued to work here for as long as I have. It’s been a big family since the first day I walked through the door”.
With his humble demeanor, Mac admits that he cannot take credit for his success without mentioning two very special peers: Michael Runge and Pat Newman. “I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for those two”, claims Mac. “They both took me under their wings and showed me what hard work truly looks like. That is what the family atmosphere is all about”.
Thank you for your years of dedication, Mac! Keep up the great work!

Jones, Debra DeMars (YMCA), Mike Biagini (Scherer Construction), Eleanor Lanza (YMCA) & Tim Burrows (YMCA)Late last year, Mike Biagini, Vice President of Scherer Construction and member of the Winston YMCA's Advisory Board, approached the YMCA with the idea of putting together an event to honor Mr. Gay's legacy.
While it was hopeful to be an in-person event with guest speakers and an official awards ceremony, it was decided to go virtual due to COVID-19. For months, employees of the YMCA spent many hours gathering photos and interviewing family, friends and employees of Mr. Gay. At the same time, PRI Productions conducted their own interviews and then compiled and edited together the program. And what a beauifully done program it was!
In addition to the Celebration of Life, the Winston YMCA has also set up the W. W. "Bill" Gay Scholarship Fund and Community Impact Award in his honor to help carry on his legacy. This special award will be presented annually to someone in Northeast Florida who constantly gives back to the community in more ways than one.
So much time and hard work went into the amazing event and we are so grateful to all who played a part in making it all come together.
Jacksonville was so thrilled to have Kimberly and Richard Hansen stop by the office in mid-March to discuss their outreach ministry, Sidewalk Funday School, A Children's Church, Inc.
For many years, this wonderful nonprofit has been taking the church outside to serve children in need across Jacksonville. With a number of sites located throughout the city, they are always looking for new volunteers to help enrich a child's life! This partnership is very near and dear to the heart of the Jacksonville office. We're hoping to see many of our own volunteer their time and give back to the community.
If you are interested in the volunteer opportunities, please contact Training & Community Services Coordinator Miranda Carr at 904-394-7236 or mcarr@wwgmc.com.
What's better than a nice cup of coffee on a chilly Friday morning? How about a cup of coffee that changes the trajectory of a child's life?! This is exactly what Jacksonville local ministry Grounds of GRACE is all about!
The Jacksonville office was so excited to welcome the Grounds of GRACE coffee bus and have the opportunity to learn more about how they're serving our community...and of course, get our caffeine fix with a delicious cup of joe! Grounds of GRACE was recently launched with the vision of being a launching pad for young men and women to take their first steps of employment through the coffee industry. They also support the the non-profit Sponsored by GRACE, which helps release children from poverty.
We are looking forward to becoming more involved with such a wonderful cause that helps change the lives of those in the Jacksonville community!
The Gainesville crew have been out and about in the community lately! Earlier in March, employees from the Gainesville office showed their support for the Boy Scouts of America at their North Florida Council Reception and Auction. Teams also competed in the Sporting Clays shoot at Bradford Sportsmen's Farm which benefits over 12,000 youth in North Central Florida! W. W. Gay has been a Platinum Level Sponsor for many years and we are so proud to continue that support!
Over in Orlando, Project Bear Claw is underway! The job is being taking place at the Northrop Grumman building in Apopka, FL and consists of renovating the exisiting facilities and also includes new solvent and acid exhaust systems for new clean rooms.
This job began as an exhaust only install for $571,021 but has since doubled in value due to the team's versatility and willingness to help. After the initial contract was fulfilled, the client (Hodess Cleanroom Construction) requested additional scope that included custom stainless steel exhaust hookups to individual tools. In addition, the Orlando crew made numerous repairs and modifications to piping systems that were installed incorrectly by another contractor. The team worked overtime for several weeks to meet a very aggressive schedule and has helped resolve numerous field and design conflicts.
We love to hear success stories like this and is more proof that our employees really are the best in the business! The rockstar team on this project is: Laura Jones (Project Manager), Jeremy Stout (Sheetmetal Superintendent), Jimmy Poff (General Superintendent), Steve Haupt (Foreman), Angel Cardoza (Foreman), Terry Manning (Foreman) and Gianni Canzanella (BIM Coordination)
