A Message From Our CEO

Dear W. W. Gay Family,

I hope this message finds you in good spirits as we embrace the festive season and the joy it brings! It’s incredible to think that Thanksgiving has already passed, and we are on the brink of bidding farewell to a truly remarkable 2023.

As we close out this year, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve embarked on together the last 12 months. To say the least, this year has been nothing short of extraordinary for us. Yes, it was tough. There were challenges, hurdles, and difficulties.

So many of you made sacrifices. But more importantly, we rose from the ashes. We made changes that are continuing to move us in the right direction. We stood resilient, and each one of you played a vital role in our collective success. We’re not just weathering storms; we’re emerging from them stronger and more united than ever.

“The future is bright and though we’ve made significant strides, there’s always more to accomplish. ”

As we stand at the threshold of 2024, I am beaming with excitement and optimism. The future is bright and though we’ve made significant strides, there’s always more to accomplish. I am thrilled to soon unveil our goals and plans for the coming years at the Town Hall meeting on Thursday, December 14. This is a testament to our commitment to being transparent and our belief in the power of shared aspirations. Our company isn’t going anywhere, and we will continue to invest in the development of our team members and explore new avenues for growth.

The Pipeline 4

This holiday season, as we count our blessings and spend time with loved ones, I encourage each of you to reflect on your indispensable role in our company’s success. Your dedication and hard work have been the cornerstone of our achievements, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. Here’s to continued success in 2024.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Thank you for being the Best in the Business!

Marketing Update

Greetings all! The Marketing team has been hard at work creating programs and processes to ensure 2024 and beyond run smoothly. I’m excited to discuss what we have planned for the upcoming year and will soon release detailed information on each program. But for now, here’s a peak at what’s to come!

Volunteer Program

As many of you may know, one of my biggest passions is helping people…this includes our people and the community. Giving back to our communities is written in our company’s DNA, so when Caroline joined my team back in the summer, one of her first key initiatives was to help our employees find ways to personally give back to our communities.

Earlier in the year we surveyed the employees to discover what organizations our people are passionate about and with that information have created a Volunteer Program with local organizations. This program will feature a volunteer opportunity with a different local organization each quarter.

My goal is to first roll this out in the Jacksonville office and make it available in our other offices as well. Information on all opportunities will be announced in January, so please stay tuned!

Onboarding

Another piece of our company that I’m passionate about is employee engagement, specifically the onboarding and orientation process. While I am working closely with HR to create a specific orientation process, the first piece of focus will be onboarding. Over the last year or so, Peyton and I have worked hard to create special “welcome boxes” for new hires. To ensure each new hire receives a personalized introduction to W. W. Gay, we have created a new process to help streamline this across all offices. I am working to finalize the details and will introduce this process in January, so please stay tuned.

Customer Gifts

As a way to thank our customers, many of you enjoy giving them W. W. Gay swag.

The Pipeline 6

For the Jacksonville office specifically, Peyton and I will soon be rolling out a “customer gift catalog” that includes pre-ordered items we have in stock that are available to give to customers. This process will help us do a better job of ensuring items are on hand. If there are specific items not listed that you are interested in ordering, we will be happy to order those for you. This process will also be rolling out in January, so be on the lookout for that.

As a reminder, if you are looking for anything creative related (business cards, brochures, presentations, etc.) please reach out directly to Peyton Beasley. For anything event or sponsorship related, please reach out to Caroline Carter. We are still working on a process to help make your marketing-related requests much easier, which I hope to be released soon.

Thanks for all you do and we look forward to serving you in 2024! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Forging ahead,

In The Know

Safety Excellence

Exciting News! We are proud that our commitment to job site safety has once again earned us the prestigious “Platinum” status in the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) STEP Safety Management program. The STEP program recognizes companies throughout the construction industry who show a continuous commitment to ensuring the safety of jobsites.

Big shoutout to all of our incredible teams here at W. W. Gay! You’re the reason we celebrate this great honor. Here’s to you, and here’s to safety excellence!

Running Together!

A group from the Jacksonville office participated in the annual BKS Corporate 5k back in late October. This run, playfully known as the largest and best office party, encourages companies across the city to come together for an evening run/walk through Downtown Jacksonville. Teams are placed in divisions according to their industry and the top team, according to best times, are then selected at the conclusion of the race. The W. W. Gay Team took 1st place in the Construction Division! Way to go, team!

Despite a hurricane delay earlier this September, we finally celebrated the grand opening of our brand-new Jacksonville office this past Tuesday! With over 100+ amazing customers, vendors and friends in attendance, we had a blast coming together to mark this milestone for our Jacksonville team.

Celebration Time!

Giving Thanks!

W. W. Gay is embracing the season of giving! Throughout the month of November, the Jacksonville office collected non-perishable items to help feed the homeless. Before the Thanksgiving holiday, a team made a special delivery and dropped off all donations to our neighbors at the City Rescue Mission.

In the spirit of giving, our food donations helped feed the men, women and children in our local neighborhood, spreading warmth and joy like a Thanksgiving feast.

Honoring Our Veterans!

Last month, the Jacksonville office came together for a special flagraising ceremony event in front of the new building, commemorating Veteran’s Day. It was a morning filled with community, delicious donuts, and heartfelt gratitude as we expressed appreciation to our courageous veterans for their unwavering dedication, bravery and love for our nation. We even took time to write letters of thanks and appreciation to our soldiers serving overseas. These letters were then sent directly to them!

Thank you again to everyone who attended. We look forward to making this an annual tradition!

Employee Spotlight

Walter Baum

Gainesville

Walter Baum, affectionately known as “Wally”, is a dedicated asset to W. W. Gay, working as a Construction Foreman out of the Gainesville office. Originally from Connecticut, Wally’s journey into the construction world was influenced by family as both his uncles worked in the trades. Following his graduation, he attended a trade school for automotive studies and began his career as a mechanical technician. Intrigued by fabrication work, Wally transitioned to a nonunion fab shop, eventually becoming a metal fabrication foreman. The turning point in his career came when a friend, who had previously worked with W. W. Gay, recommended the company’s apprenticeship program. Wally joined the program and began his journey at the US Herrell building in Gainesville. Wally has been with us ever since.

As a Construction Foreman, Wally’s main customer is Duke Energy. His responsibilities include handling scheduled outages, planning processes, coordinating manpower, and addressing the plant’s needs to ensure successful project completion.

From managing smaller capital projects to being on-call for emergency issues, Wally enjoys the dynamic nature of his role, allowing him to switch between coordination and hands-on tasks.

Wally’s proudest moment throughout his career was leading his team in the completion of the University of Florida Veterinarian School’s Chiller and Boiler Plant. This was a high-profile project that he took on early in his career and set the bar for his future endeavors. He keeps his notes from this project as a constant reminder of lessons learned and motivation for continuous improvement.

“I don’t ever underestimate a project, but if you have a good team, you can overcome any challenge.”

Wally emphasizes the importance of facing challenges that push both him and his team, making the work fulfilling. “If things always fell into place like there are supposed to and there isn’t adversity, the work wouldn’t be as fulfilling. I don’t ever underestimate a project, but if you have a good team, you can overcome any challenge.” Drawing inspiration from his family and the work ethic instilled by his father, Wally believes in the value of humility and not taking oneself too seriously.

The Pipeline 26

Throughout his tenure, Wally has embraced the challenges and learning opportunities presented at W. W. Gay.

Wally finds his greatest motivation in his four children and loving wife. Outside of work, he stays active on his family farm, raising chickens, pigs, turkeys, and horses. Wally and his family host workshops, sharing their knowledge on animal processing. Additionally, he enjoys hunting and watching his children participate in sports. Wally aspires to impart his work ethic to his children, just as he received from his own family.

We are lucky to have you as a part of the team Wally!

Safety Corner

FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF SAFETY

Over the holidays, when our families gather, parties are scheduled and travel time starts, safety should be on everyone’s mind.

When traveling, be prepared.

Stay safe on the road during the Holidays, as well as everyday:

• Keep an emergency kit with you in your vehicle.

• Get a good night’s sleep before departing and avoid drowsy driving.

• Leave early, planning ahead for heavy traffic.

• Make sure every person in the vehicle is properly buckled up no matter how long or short the distance.

• Put that cell phone away; many distractions occur while driving, but cell phones are the main culprit.

• Practice defensive driving.

• Designate a sober driver to ensure guests make it home safely after a holiday party; alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription and illegal drugs can cause impairment.

Decorate Safely:

• Keep potentially poisonous plants, such as mistletoe, and holly berries away from children.

• If using an artificial tree, check that it is labeled “fire resistant”.

• If using a live tree, cut off about 2 inches of the trunk to expose fresh wood for better water absorption, remember to water it, and remove it from your home when it is dry.

• Place your tree at least 3 feet away from fireplaces and other heat sources, making certain not to block doorways.

• Avoid placing breakable ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower tree branches where small children can reach them.

• Only use indoor lights indoors and outdoor lights outdoors, and choose the right ladder for the task when hanging lights.

• Replace light sets that have broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections.

• Follow the package directions on the number of light sets that can be plugged into one socket.

• Never nail, tack or stress wiring when hanging lights and keep plugs off the ground away from puddles (water).

• Turn off all lights and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house.

The Pipeline 28

Candle and Fireplaces:

• Place candles where they cannot be knocked down or blown over and out of reach of children.

• Keep matches and lighters up high and out of reach of children (in a locked cabinet).

• Use flameless, rather than lighted, candles near flammable objects.

• Don’t burn trees, wreaths or wrapping paper in the fireplace.

• Use a screen on the fireplace at all times when a fire is burning. Never leave candles or fireplaces burning unattended or when you are asleep.

• Check and clean the chimney and fireplace area at least once a year.

Food Poisoning:

• Wash your hands frequently when handling food.

• Keep raw meat away from fresh produce.

• Use separate cutting boards, plates and utensils for uncooked and cooked meats to avoid cross-contamination.

• Use a food thermometer to make sure meat is cooked to a safe temperature.

• Refrigerate hot or cold leftover food within two hours of being served.

• When storing turkey, cut the leftovers in small pieces so they will chill quickly.

Giving Safely:

• Toys are age-rated for safety, not for children’s intellect and physical ability, so be sure to choose toys in the correct age range.

• Choose toys for children under 3 that do not have small parts which could be choking hazards.

• For children under 10, avoid toys that must be plugged into an electrical outlet.

• Be cautious about toys that have button batteries or magnets, which can be harmful or fatal if swallowed.

• When giving scooters and other riding toys, give the gift of appropriate safety gear, too; helmets should be worn at all times and they should be sized to fit.

The Safety Department wishes everyone a Safe and Happy Holidays! As always, we are always available to all employees. If you have any questions or safety-related concerns, please reach out.

Thank you for your help and stay safe,

UF Health Shands North Tower

2nd Floor Master Plan

The Gainesville Office is wrapping up a 36 month project in December at the UF Health Shands North Main Tower.

The UF Health Shands North Tower 2nd Floor Master Plan project included the renovation of operating rooms, prep/PACU/recovery, staff support and administration spaces.

There are a total of 21 OR’s that were renovated over the course of 7 phases. Two AHU’s serve these OR spaces, one received retrofit upgrades during critical outages and the other received a brand new AHU swapped over on critical outages. This was an occupied construction process that required keeping all adjacent ORs open, fully-functioning and without incident during the entire duration of this project, with only ICRA containment walls dividing the construction site from the active hospital environment. At any given time, physicians were completing highly complicated surgeries directly across the hall and infants were being cared for in the NICU on the floor below.

This is one that involved multiple teams including support from Plan & Spec, Industrial, Service and Test and Balance to be successful and is one of the most complex projects in recent years. A huge thank you to all involved.

Orlando Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Orlando office recently had the opportunity to collaborate with the team at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on an exciting project! We successfully replaced the existing Air Handler Units (AHU) on the beloved Tower of Terror ride with two new Air Handler Units (AHU). Our dedicated teams worked tirelessly through long nights, overcoming manufacturing delays and ensuring seamless coordination across multiple departments and Disney to ensure these improvements would be a success.

The scope of our work included the demolition and replacement of two Air Handler Units (AHU) along with chilled water piping, related ductwork, and the extension of a concrete pad.

Originally starting in December 2022, the project faced many delays, including pushing equipment arrivals until this past summer. Therefore, this past summer marked the start of the project phase, strategically unfolding the improvements in stages, with each AHU completion as a significant milestone.

We are thrilled to share that this project is well on its way to completion, with the final touches scheduled for December. The dedication and teamwork displayed throughout this project serves as just another example of why our employees are the still the best in the business! Kudos to everyone involved for making these improvements a great success!
